Finally got a chance to try Abigail's out for lunch today after a few failed attempts to get a table for dinner. This restaurant is super tiny on the inside (maybe 15-20 tables max) so it fills up quickly & can get a bit noisy. However, don't let this stop you from giving it a shot! Today I had the skirt steak with the Spanish potatoes & carrots. Skirt steak was cooked perfectly and had a ton of great flavors, the chimichurri was different than I'm used to, but was a great compliment to the dish. Abigail's Cafe is a hidden treasure. This spot is a fusion of Polish food and Portuguese food. The crazy part is they totally now both sides. Too often I see places trying to do too much and sail across the board but Abigail's definitely has some authentic Polish and Portuguese food. The place is medium size, there is a big far area when you walk in and then seating for dinner in the back area as well as a Courtyard area for drinks when the weather is nice or for Food Service as well. If you're coming on the weekend I highly suggest making a reservation, they do take reservations, because this place can get quite packed. If you're coming with a group you should definitely call ahead because there aren't a crazy amount of seeds inside, I would say definitely under 50 seats. I tend to order the Portuguese dishes and I've been satisfied with all of my orders here. This place is probably on the medium to high range of price for being a small spot but it's well worth coming out to this spot every once in awhile. They do have weekly specials so you can always come in and got on one of those, I believe one of the nights is buy one get one entree free. This place definitely hold a special spot to us. Also, they have a very extensive sangria menu. Their sangria is pretty strong and delicious. The check can get quite High here if you're not playing close attention, but the food is so good! We ordered pork osso buco off the daily specials since you don't see it on many menus. Food was very good. Staff was friendly and attentive. I wanna give this place so many stars cause I've been going here for a long time. I know staff is hard to find right now so maybe that's the reason but the food is no good. Everything is so greasy for no reason (I got just a an app of pirogies boiled and they were COVERED in oil to the point that I didn't want to eat them), the salads are overdressed and you're lucky if you get the right salad dressing. Was very excited to try Abigail's for the first time on Saturday, 11/25/23. We had a 7PM reservation for 4 people. The table was not ready so ordered drinks from the bar. The bartender messed up our order but it was eventually corrected. I checked with the hostess multiple times regarding the availability of our table. She kept blaming a couple that was taking too long to finish, this was the reason our table was not available. Meanwhile, there were other tables that opened up and they remained empty up until 7:45. At that time, I checked one final time to see if there was any chance of us being seated. The hostess continued to blame the couple that was taking to long. I absolutely love this restaurant! By far my favorite place to grab a pitcher of sangria and unwind. The seating isn't the best because it's such a small place and Thursday-Saturday is always super busy but between the food and drinks it's easy to overlook that. Only recently did I hear about this place and it seemed absolutely demented and perfect - Polish and Portuguese cuisines on the same menu?! (I guess I'm not the only one that wants to wash down their camarão e alho with a shot of vodka. And have bigos with a glass of sangria. Or a... okay, you get the idea.) We were the very first people there for lunch and our server couldn't have been nicer. Everyone tried something different and everyone raved about the food. The shrimp and sausage dish? Way delicious. Skirt steak - perfect. Burger and fries off the kid menu? Massive portion that would've stopped an adult in their tracks. (It was excellent.) The Mrs' Schabowy? She wouldn't stop fawning over it. (Worth noting that she's right off the łódź from Poland and this reminded her of her mom's home cooking when she was a kid.) The sangria? Killer. (The medium pitcher was just right on a hot almost-summer day and you still need to drive back north to home and can't risk getting tipsy.) Plenty of leftovers to bring home as well. We're already making plans to visit again and this time taking my kids' Babcia and Dziadek to see what they think. I recently went on a date and the girl who I was taking out had been going on and on about this place and being she's a local I figured "cool, maybe it's a little hidden treasure" small, "hole in the wall" spots with bangin' authentic food is my favorite and I think North NJ has a good amount of them so I was excited to try. Before I get into it let me say my server was really nice and the rest of the staff seemed to care and be helpful so that was cool but the food?? Was not. My appetizer was Portuguese Sausage and that was the highlight. Aside from being extra fatty which happens sometimes, it was decent. I ordered a Steak and Shrimp and she ordered a Portuguese Steak which I guess was steak that was supposed to be served with thin slice of seasoned ham on top? It literally looked like greasy pink rubber, she had to take it off. I picked at it and it was about the thickness of Oscar Meyer bologna, rubbery and just kinda gross. She also said her steak was very chewy and I believed her because I could blow bubbles with my mine! Or shoot it from the foul line, fill it with air and use it as a spare tire etc etc. basically everything but eat it. It came with shrimp on top and a piece of melted Swiss over that. The cheese was just barely melted to the point I could just pick it up and take it off. My jaw was actually tired from chewing that I found myself forcing it just so I wasn't hungry later but that didn't work, I couldn't eat much of it. Now for the weird stuff. I asked for a Diet Coke with lemon and when it came out there was no straw. So me getting ready for a dental procedure because I have a very sensitive tooth said, lemme get this guy and get a straw this way I can keep the cold soda away from that area. I asked the server "hey bud can I get a straw when you get a chance?" And he replied "oh I'm so sorry we don't have those"....What?? You don't have straws in restaurant with a bar?? I don't know what's more shot out, the fact that you don't have straws or that you called them "those" Dude I asked for a straw not a fresh pineapple. You don't have those? How about forks? Damn. Then at the end of the meal we were offered coffee and I figured, you can't jack this up but lemme tell ya, oh yes they can! I asked for an Espresso. My server asked "would you like Equal, Splenda or Sweet & Low?" I was so caught off guard thinking, you're not gonna bring out the little packet dispenser and everything? So I just said "Equal I guess" a minute goes buy and I'm thinking why in the hell would I put that shit in an Espresso?? So I grabbed him and again "hey bud can I just have plain sugar?" Boom, big old school sugar shaker comes out and finally my espresso...which was NOT an Espresso. It was literally black coffee. Like when you have a lot of coffee and just a little bit of water? Ka Boom! That's what I got a nice tiny cup of warm, black water with NO lemon because I guess they get the lemon rinds from the same vendor they get the straws from. If I didn't have a lady I'm getting to know at the table I probably would've left after the steak came but I was polite about it because of her and again my server was really nice and I didn't want to mess with him. Seriously though if you're that hungry there's a gas station across the street you can get a slim Jim or something. What a great little spot. I went for lunch with a coworker and ordered their broiled sesame tuna over salad. The waitress asked me how I wanted my tuna which I haven't been asked in quite a while. There waitress are very attentive and quick and go above and beyond. Only thing Is parking is hard. They do not have a parking lot and usually have to park in the gas station across the street. But it is totally worth it. I think I just ordered the wrong thing when I came here. Just recovering from a stomach bug, for some reason ordering the special that day of the shrimp risotto sounded better than the pierogies. And maybe I just don't order risotto enough but it was al dente as well as the shrimp being overcooked. The cool thing was that it was presented really nicely on the plate with the balsamic vinegar sauce. My coworker ordered the salmon and I could not stop starting at it while sadly eating my risotto. I adore this place especially in the summer since they have outdoor seating. Its one of those places where you can pop in after work to grab a bite & drinks with your friends or you can host a dinner party at. So far every server we've had was great and attentive to our table. The manager (or owner?) always comes around to ask how the service is and how everything is going. Everyone is very laid back but professional at the same time. Annnddd their food tastes homemade which is a major plus! As a local, this is one of my favorite places. The place has a tavern type vibe. The lighting is on the darker side. It's good for a date, girls night out or celebrating a birthday. Everyone is very friendly. When you talk in you will see the bar area with many watching the games on TV. I always managed to get seated near the fire place when I come. It's so warm and nice. The menu has good options that vary from paella to pierogis to burgers. My favorite is the collard green soup! My favorite favorite item from here is their sangria. I'm pretty sure it's vodka based! This is a great local restaurant that I have been to multiple times. While I am not Polish, the menu appears to be inspired by a lot of traditional Polish dishes which is all really good - it is very European in general. Some of my favorites: Shrimp in Creamy Garlic Butter Sauce (appetizer), Hungarian Pancake (entree - potato pancake with beef cubes, etc. - so good!) and the Abigail's Plate (traditional Polish entree which has an assortment of things like pierogies, kielbasa and stuffed cabbage). And don't forget a nice big pitcher of SANGRIA - I usually get the red. It is hard to find a spot with good sangria - a lot of times it is just juice. Have I told you how much I love Abigails? No? Ok, I love Abigails. When my beau and I can't figure out where we want to eat, we go to Abigails because we know we're going to have a great meal. So we found ourselves here again recently and once again, it never disappoints. For being a 2pm on a Sunday it was packed! I did see a few tables that were open but all had a "reserved" sign on them which was disappointing because some of these tables were never taken the entire time we were there. We decided to just sit at the bar and eat which was fine. Lately my meal of choice has been the schabowy. Don't ask me how to pronounce it because I can't. I usually point to it on the menu and go "that!" It's basically a pork schnitzel which comes with mashed taters and a side of a beet salad and cucumbers in a yogurt sauce. You MUST order the pork topped with cheese and a fried egg. Heaven. When I die and go to heaven I want schabowy from Abigails. Parking can be tough, and the gas station across the street has about 4 spots for Abigails, so most of the time we ended up parking on the street. But they must have secured spots at the diner across the way because the restaurant had signs indicating you can now park there. We wanted to sit outside but there were way too many mosquitoes (which is not the restaurants fault. Always have enjoyed Abigails for lunch, but on Friday May 26th, went for lunch and was so disappointed. Always on Fridays the place is packed for lunch, but on the 26th only three tables were occupied, which i found unusual. Service was slow to start off, Drinks took awhile to get to table, ( water and sprite) best part of Abigails is the bread. This time hard as a rock, Abigails Plate Kielbasa burnt, pierogies no taste and stuffed cabbage no flavor. Pear Salad with chicken thrown together, looked terrible. I went there the other night with a friend for dinner. We sat outside and were given seats by the door which sucked because there was so much traffic from people coming in and out of the place. As well as the wait staff coming through with food (someone's food fell right next to us by the way). Oh and those seats are next to the freezer which they go in and out of all night. The waitress was ok, we ordered the skirt steak and they forgot to add the sauce that comes with the dish to both of our plates. First time visitor. A very quaint neighborhood restaurant. Do not go if looking for cozy and little noise type place. There is plenty conversations going on. The decor is like of a down home house kitchen serving up some delights. They start you off work a basket of warm fresh bread w/butter and oil. Nice touch. I decided on the Seafood Alfredo. Lets get to the food: Started off with the bread with the olive oil with herb dip cup - BANGIN Then - THE CLAMS - OMG - BANGIN - the white wine sauce is also a good dipping sauce for the bread. Then - The Entree - Steak cooked medium well with shrimp and mozzarella cheese topping with a side of vegetables and (what I thought were going to be fries) potato chips. ALL GOOD.
