OK, I will admit, going to a crab house with 12 other people on a Saturday is not the best idea if you want great service. However, I do expect at 4:30pm in the afternoon that we should be able to get some moderately good service...right? meh....not really. The waitress was slow, we didn't get to order until 5:30pm because first they had to find a place for us to sit when the whole place was nearly empty, we had to wait 20 minutes for 2 pitchers of water, and another 20 minutes after asking her what the price of a dozen crabs was because $30 a dozen is kinda steep for us. When a customer says we need a minute...this does not mean come back a LOT later. While I'm on the subject, every time we asked for something, it took the waitress at least 15 minutes to get back to us and we didn't leave the restaurant until almost 8pm because of the slow service. Luckily we were outside and it was great weather or else someone probably would have complained. Onto the food. The only reason this place gets 3 stars is because the crabs and seafood pots were spot on. I got the deluxe seafood pot ($29.95) which included dungeness crab, 1 MD blue crab, 1 cluster of king crab legs, 6 shrimp, mussels and clams and a corn on the cob. Overall, not a bad buy. The standard seafood pot was $24.95 and it didn't include the dungeness crab. The Fish and chips ($10.95) that my sister ordered was apparently dry and under seasoned but she liked the fries. I do want to mention that the fish and chips was TINY!!!! She was still starving after she finished the food but wasn't willing to spend any more money to get more food. The Crab Cake looked more like a chicken patty and my friend who ordered said it wasn't good and it certainly didn't make her like seafood much. I did like the atmosphere and I did like the server because she was nice, but when I asked the group what they would rate the restaurant, everyone said it was a 2.5-3.5 out of 5 stars. So clearly the experience was not a good one for them either. Also, I think almost all of us left still hungry. Ok, so I'm from Texas and I've never eaten steamed crabs before ('round our parts we eat crawfish and shrimp y'all) so I wanted to check that off my Maryland bucket list. I got a little nervous when my in-laws said they were going to take me to Abner's because obviously the first thing I did was look on Yelp and saw the reviews were not consistent. When we pulled up it was right next to this weird casino and it turned out they were connected inside which was even more weird. It's definitely a no-frills kind of place as others have stated but it was generally clean. To my delighted surprise, we had a great experience. We went on a Wednesday night where they have a $2 crab and $2 beer special from 2p-7p. Our waitress was very friendly, not the quickest, but if you've ever eaten crabs before you know it's a slooooooooooow process lol. She didn't exactly need to be swift. There were a lot of us so we ended up going through a few dozen crabs. The crabs themselves were decently sized for the most part, and none were spoiled. They bring out butter and extra old bay in case they didn't put enough of there for you (it was plenty for me!) and of course hammers and buckets. If it were me, crabs are about the only thing I would dare order here BUT the crabs were good in my novice gulf coast opinion. Glad I got the experience!! read more

I got a dozen blue crabs and my husband got snow crab legs and shrimp. Everything was excellent. Our server was super friendly and always had our drinks refilled immediately. Funny place. We went here with the inlaws after a trip to the bay. It was good. Don't go in your Sunday best, though. Especially if you plan on ordering a nice pile of crab!!!!! Walking in I passed multiple tables piled high with crab and entire families just grabbing, smashing, and eating. At that point, I'd already decided what I wanted to eat. AHHH but my inlaws and wife didn't want crab. FINE. We're only at a crab shack, guys. So I asked our very, very friendly waitress what I could do about this, and she said they offer smaller piles. So of course, I ordered a small pile (13) of very tasty crabs. It was a chore, but I made it through! The place also has a bunch of real slot machines, so if you're a freak for gambling AND crab, go for it. The hush puppies are quite tasty, as well. But be careful cos they are easy to fill up on. Al and I went after a lazy afternoon at North Beach. The rainstorm cleared the beaches and we thought it'd be a good opportunity to explore. We found Abner's through Yelp. It's a simple place: simple tables, simple menu, for simple folk. Food was simple and simply good. There's a Keno/casino lounge off to one side of the place which is unlike anything I've seen in Maryland, or frankly all the DMV. Prices were fine, food was fine, service was laughably bad. It was like we each ordered something and inevitably something was wrong or forgotten each time. Oysters came without Tabasco/lemon, Pepsi was never brought for me, coleslaw was given to our neighbor, didn't get utensils after asking twice, bucket for crab scraps as promised wasn't provided, lalalalala. If not for the conversations we enjoyed with the patrons around us, it would have been a 1-star trip. I get mistakes. I'm pretty forgiving usually. I've tipped less than 20% only so many times, and I don't think the tip I left was even deserved. read more

Personal favorite. The crab house is decently priced with great food. Having been a regular for more than two years, I figure the crab season is from early April to late October and the best time to go is between June and late October. Why? This used to be a crab house but now it's a casino that has a restaurant attached which happens to sell crabs. Not a busy night but took 50 minutes to get a crab cake sandwich with a few measly fries on the side for $20. Crab cake was all breading, very little if any crab in it. A shame, cause a few years ago this place was great. Not sure what happened. read more

Very disappointed with the meal, I spent $100 and the only good things were the hush puppies and small crab legs. There were no sauces or cocktail sauce for the shrimp and the crab dip pretzel was so hard a chewy that it wasn't worth eating. Definitely won't be back. read more

Wonderful experience My husband and I traveled to Washington DC for a long weekend. I wanted to go back to the place that my Uncle Andy lived many years before he passed away. We visited him in Chesapeake Beach MD as often as we could when I was growing up. Abners was a place that he always loved to take us for crabs. Since it was my husbands birthday and he loves seafood, it was a no brainier that I would take him there for his birthday dinner. Our waitress, Cindy, could not have been more wonderful. She was very attentive and so sweet. Her service to us was above and beyond! While my husband is very versed at eating all sorts of seafood, he had never cracked this kind of crab. Cindy saw this and showed him exactly how to do it and even continued to get the crab meat out for him. He LOved the crabs. I don't eat seafood so I had a salad and BLT which were both good. We were looking forward to having the Maryland crab experience, and decided on Abner due to its location (we were at North Beach). I liked the no frills, casual atmosphere, and our server was friendly. But the food was disappointing to say the least. We ordered a dozen crabs(which was not cheap), steampots, and broiled flounders. The crabs were not sweet at all, and the flounder was so tasteless that even my 5 year old grandson said it tasted bad. We went there for a fundraiser for out civic association and they did an outstanding job in taking care of us. We had about 55 people in our party and everyone had a great time. The crabs were meaty and the service was great. With it being on the water, weather makes it hit or miss if you get to sit outside or walk around the piers. They have slots in .another part (that's also where the bar is ). Highly recommended and I'm looking forward to going back. read more

I went here about 2 weeks ago after hearing they were already serving crabs. I was a bit skeptical since they were imported from other areas, but it'd been way too long since my last crab so I was willing to give it a shot. We ordered about 2 dozen crabs and some hush puppies, which came out pretty quickly. The crabs were mostly small and not exceptionally meaty (since it's only April), but the cooks more than made up for it. They were seasoned to perfection and cooked in a way that made them much easier to pick but not overly watery. The crabs were pretty expensive ($40 a dozen) and small, but it was worth every penny. Our waitress was spectacularly sweet and attentive, the hush puppies were great, and I won $3 on the slots. Came with 3 others, we got AYCE crabs , a chicken quesadilla , and crab dip. Service was HORRIBLE our server Bonnie came to our table every 25 mins to basically say She'd bring a refill (and then never did) We eventually got our food and it was wrong. The crab dip was really good but the quesadilla was missing the chicken and it took 20 mins to get the right food. If your from out of town and looking for a good Maryland food experience, this isnt the place. The food may be okay for the locals that come to eat but I was not impressed at all. First we ordered the crab balls, for $15 they should be good right? Well they weren't. And you can tell that it was fried in old bad oil, so was the rest of the meal. We also ordered the coconut shrimp which says served WITH raspberry sauce. I was served shrimp drenched IN raspberry sauce making the shrimp very soggy. The last thing to come out was the fish and chips basket with a side of hush puppies. If we would have known that they don't cook with fresh oil we would have opted out of all these fried dishes (the whole restaurant too). I thought that a local restaurant would take pride in their food and service, especially since this place has been open for half a century. Nope. Not this place. The server/hostess was slow and unorganized. She got one of our meals completely wrong. We ordered an appetizer that was $15. We received it on a plate that was too small, and the silverware was plastic. Yes. Plastic. It had 3 small fried oysters, that were literally laying in a pool of grease, 3 crab balls that were good, and 3 small steamed shrimp. When she placed it on the table, the tarter and cocktail sauce were laying on top of the food with the silverware. She gave us no plates, or any utensils other than those. The table had food on it when we sat down. It was freezing cold in the restaurant. (Yes it was November, but modern man created devices to produce heat for a reason). The service was incredibly slow.
