This is the second time I've been to this food truck and it tasted as good as I remembered! This food truck is located right behind Valero Gas if you're heading down east Manor. Kinda easy to miss if you're passing by quickly but if you see something that looks vaguely like a silver submarine, you're at the right place! There's some parking spots (2-3) near the truck but if those are filled, there's street parking nearby too. There are also picnic tables right next the truck where you can enjoy your food (just be warned that there are usually a lot of flies in that area). Service is quick and the owner is always friendly! He gave my friend some free baklava with her order since it was her first time trying this place out. He would also occasionally poke his head out of the truck and ask if we were enjoying the food, which was sweet as well. Mix Gyro and Chicken Shawarma Plate ($16.99, 4.5/5) - Super big portion sizes - can last at least 2 meals! All the ingredients work really well together, just the right amount of flavor. I preferred the gyro over the chicken shawarma, so might just get the pure gyro plate the next time I visit. Overall this spot is affordable, food's delicious, and the service is great! My food was ready in about 25 minutes. The staff at the truck were really warm and kind, and thanked me for my order. The truck itself is really well set up, and they have a nice vibe going on there. At first I was pretty skeptical of 5 stars and so many reviews at that, but as soon as I took one bite, I knew that the 5 stars was no joke. Wow! Delicious. I got the Falafel and Gardenia Plate and it was incredible. The falafel was not dry, like most are. The rice was flavorful but the real winner was the eggplant and cauliflower. Each bite was amazing. Just picked up food from here for the first time. Firstly, missed it when driving bc it has the Thai Thani sign right next to it but that's actually further down from Abo Youssef. This place is in the parking lot of the Valero. Ordered the gyro plate ($11.99) and chicken shawarma plate ($10.99) and used the Yelp check in which is a free baba ghanoush which I highly recommend - it was delicious. The plate is plenty of food and can easily be split between 2 people. The gyro plate was way better than the chicken plate IMO but it would be nice to have the white sauce and red sauce (not sure if the red sauce is even an option) but some heat would be perfect. All of this came with 3 warm pitas. Glad I was finally able to try this place bc it's been on my list for awhile. read more

This is what I wrote for the Flea, Cherrywood's local paper in May of 2003: Just off Manor Road, tucked into the side parking lot of the Valero and across the street from Hoover's, sits a silver Airstream trailer local with local-and-statewide accolades stuck to the side, a simple menu board of its offerings, and fresh mint growing outside of it. Here you can find one of Cherrywood's most popular food trucks: Abo Youssef, which consistently puts out some of the best Mediterranean food in the area. Run by Samir Akliosl, 55, a former tour guide from Cairo, Egypt, he moved to Austin in 2013 after the economic downturn due to the Egyptian Coup. He worked his way up from the 99-cent store off Manor corridor before buying the trailer from his friend in 2015, promptly deciding to put his food knowledge to work. From his years of guiding in Cairo, Akliosl learned which restaurants had the best foods, which paired the right meats with the right rice, which spices were best for what dishes, and continually refined his palate and primed culinary experiences for his clients. But though he knew good food and where to find it -- he had absolutely no idea how to cook it. Thus, he flew in his mother, Samira, from Cairo to help him curate the menu, and his wife, Nachwa, whom he credits with setting up the truck. Samira took her son back to his youth with the food they prepared starting with the Falafel Gardenia plate with eggplant, cauliflower, with a special sauce that is hers' too. The eggplant was the star and the falafel perfectly crunchy and spicy. There's a variety of meat on their menu that's spiced and cooked just right, from the Chicken and Gyro mixed plate to lamb and chicken kebabs that are served as platters, sandwiches, and salads. Samir, who lives in Round Rock, with his wife and twin children, soccer crazed Youssef (Abo means "Father of") and an aspiring tik tocker and makeup artist, Miriam, counts family and food as the most important things in his life.
