If I am making anything that requires pita, I ask for a package from the baskets behind the counter. So good! I love this place. The staff have been there forever and are very accommodating to requests. Their grilled olives are so addictive! My favorite is their falafel wrap made exactly as they serve it. Filthy, long out of date groceries with prices inflated beyond belief, posted sandwich prices that turn out to be deceptively lower than what is actually charged, and disgusting prepared food. A "Muffaletta" was served on a VERY stale roll that the extremely rude counter staff insisted had been "baked that morning." I can only guess that this place survives on a reputation based on a long past level of goodness and a lack of local competition for "Mediterranean" groceries and prepared items. Love this wee market and the ladies who work there. They are always helpful and very sweet. The market holds many items from my childhood which you cannot Fin at a regular grocery store. They had Kadayif in a bag and also Kataifi in the frozen section. Then they had the pistachio cream paste. The chicken shawarma that is made to order is SOOOOOo good. Warm when they had it to you for 9.99. They have kabob plates we will try next! Now the ck shawarma is not the size of a chipotle burrito yet it packs a punch! Marinated chicken, wonderful spices, a to die for garlic aioli or hummus spread which ward off vampires for days, fresh tomato, parsley. It's a wonderful party in your mouth. My teen daughter is obsessed... she said "I would eat this over chic fil a". Well thats pretty surprising. Cash or credit here. Small mom and pop so no frills. The grocery store has fresh fetas, olive bar, fresh in house made baklava (traditional, pistachio, walnut).. that was amazing! Came here looking for a good pastrami sandwich and soup. The place was packed! And it was 2pm on a Thursday . I ordered a pastrami ( it's big so get it cut in half) and my mother ordered lentil soup. The soup was good and temperature wise it was hot . The pastrami sandwich had pickles lettuce a nice big tomato , cheese and pastrami. It's not a huge layered pastrami but a large filling one nonetheless. The baked goods looked yummy. Also one case was deli meats. Massive selection of Mediterranean foods. Really enjoyed this place , you can look here probably for hours at the spices, mixes. On the counter there was also fresh tangerines, apricots and very little apples( not familiar with it these tiny apples). Fresh bread rolls too. Just a warning the parking lot is very very small. people get very creative with parking. My car was blocked by a car and inside was a man and a woman eating their sandwiches and soup . Although I was faced forward to the drivers door , approx 1 foot from my hood , they ignored me and continued to eat. I ended up waiting 10 minutes for them to finish eating and leave. That's the only drawback is the small parking lot. Otherwise go check it out you'll have found your new favorite sandwich place. read more

The Phoenicia bakery had plenty of grape leaves and ghee and olives in barrels and homemade pita bread and more. The store is very small but they stock a great variety and somehow fit it all in. They have some desserts like baklava that tasted just like my mom used to make. Even if you don't cook Lebanese food, the market may just inspire some new dishes. I love this quaint little deli! They have a really great selection in their market area, as well as unique pastries and even sell meals to go. I've had both their gyro plate and the kafta plate, as well as fresh hummus, feta, tabouli, pita bread and pita chips from their market items. At times, Mediterranean food can lack flavor in my opinion, but Phoenicia does it RIGHT with the perfect punch of seasonings and freshness. The servings are huge and I can never finish the entire plate when I get one. I prefer the kafta plate over the gyro plate because of the leaner meat, but both are very tasty and it's just my preference! If you come for a quick meal, make sure you look around their fridges and shelves. There are some real gems! I love grabbing a random ingredient and making a dinner out of it. Best Baklava I've ever had - hands down! And, I've been to Greece! It was so fresh, so flaky and delicious- just outstanding! It wasn't overly sweet or overly syrupy either which can happen at other places. Ladies that helped me at the counter were very kind. I did get a veggie lunch plate and it was delicious. I do wish they would have let me sub out the grape leaf sides for something else's but that wasn't allowed at the time. Sweet owners, great selection of middle eastern grocery items. We were curious seeing a bag of green almonds for sale on the counter and inquired how to eat them. The owner explained to us patiently about green almonds and the Lebanese tradition of eating green almonds as a snack in spring. I love that it's essentially our little international neighborhood grocery with a stunningly large and diverse selection (I found haggis and Olivier salad for New Years!). The place has looked the exact same for that time and the food has remained consistent, so the people complaining that it has "gone downhill" are giving me some nice LOL's. Know why this place is the real deal? You could pick it up and smack it down in the middle of Astoria, Queens and it would fit right in. Yeah, all the stuff on the shelves are dusty. We used to live up by the Phoenicia on North Lamar but never managed to get there. We now live on South Lamar and finally had a chance to check the South location out! Note: there is NO inside seating and only 2 two seater tables in front, so you'll likely be taking your purchases to go. Be aware that the prices on the menu are pretty out of date but the sandwiches are still a pretty good deal. We got the Beef Shwarma "sandwich" for $5.something. It took a while to get the sandwich even though we were the only people there so I would probably skip Phoenicia if I was in a hurry. We were initially disappointed when they gave us the sandwich. It was actually a wrap and we were sharing it so we were sure we were going to leave hungry, but the flavor was great and it was pretty filling. I was fine with my half and I think I still would have finished a whole but would have been pretty full. Phoenicia is also a middle eastern grocery and bakery store so while you wait for your food you can wander the aisles, get olives from the large olive bar, fresh feta cheeses, or check out the baked goods. Turnovers are good sized and $1 each (cherry, apple, apricot, guava, and a couple other flavors) and chocolate croissants were $1.50.
