We visited for tea with some adults and children this weekend. The room near the patio is gorgeous (the inner room is more on the cozy side). We were quickly seated with a reservation and the tables were lovely - gorgeous wedgewood china (even for the kids!). Greeted with prosecco for adults and sparkling juice for the kids. Service was really friendly and helpful with tea selections. There are about 4 options for children if they want tea as well. Food was good and there was a tower for the kids (their the older child at our table wanted the adult sandwiches...). Plenty of sandwiches and sweets. The scone actually was the standout though - orange cranberry - very soft and delicious. Customary lemon curd, jelly and cream - delicious. All in all, this was a nice, fancy time for tea but there were some negatives namely: no one ever asked if we wanted more drinks (I would have had a glass of champagne but no one returned or asked - I could have flagged someone down but was surprised at this level of hotel that service wasn't so helpful). We also felt rushed - I would have stayed longer to enjoy but get they were cleaning up our table quickly. Instead, we brought some of the treats to go. While the staff was friendly, they weren't really there a lot - I saw some tables get asked if they wanted more sandwiches - but we did not... and it wasn't because we had kids at the table because I'd say at the time we went, more than 50% of the tables had kids with them. We did get a nice little to go gift of tea, chocolate and a tea strainer. I'm conflicted upon returning just due to feeling rushed.... I always go for tea once a year at least and I've been to every fancy hotel in the city (and other restaurants) for tea and multiple hotels in Europe (Ireland, England) and this was the most European feeling but really felt less relaxed even though the surroundings were gorgeous. read more

The restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived, yet we were told they were "fully committed" because we didn't have a reservation. It made the experience feel impersonal from the moment we walked in. The atmosphere was very dark and gothic, which may appeal to some people, but it didn't feel warm or inviting to us. Came here for a dinner with family. It's really pretty inside - I'm not sure what they call it, but the area near where that have big doors to the patio. Lots of plants and beautiful botanical prints. The bar is gorgeous- we walked past it to our table and I could see they have some nice higher-end bourbons. The food was great - had a chopped salad and the ribeye and both were amazing. The service was a little hit or miss. Very spotty until we got our food and then it seemed like one side of the table was being ignored and that included our host. Sadly, the worst breakfast we have ever had. This used to be one of our favorite spots, and a restaurant we would go to for special occasions. Whoever overhauled the menu should be fired along with the "chef." Our eggs were DRENCHED in oil and sour tasting, the breakfast potatoes tasted like they were old and expired, and the restaurant was dirty. The decorative changes are beautiful the food and service changes not so much. Seems like they must have a new chef because things seem a little off. We've been coming here for years, especially on special occasions we love their sushi. They weren't offering that anymore. We ordered the tuna Crudo. They were out. Ordered the tomato bisque which was very tasty. Hubby ordered the French onion soup which is just ok per my hubby who has French onion everywhere we go. Ordered the Mushroom rosotto which was ok. We wanted a white table cloth place with a variety of foods close to Navy RTC for our sailor's graduation celebration. This served well, and I would recommend it for others looking for this, though I have some criticisms of both food and service The ambiance is just lovely. We were here in February and all diners were seated in a glassed in area with views of white lights in the garden. Parking: pull up if you want valet. Otherwise street parking was within 1 block You CAN make a reservation here and that was important to me because my sailor had a firm deadline. One can also order off of the pub menu ( which adds items like chicken pot pie and shepherds pie) and the sushi menu When my sailor had his cottage pie placed in front of him, he said "elegant" more than once. After three months of cafeteria food, it is just what he wanted and it made him feel celebrated My salmon was average-- nicely presented and edible but nothing amazing. We also had the chicken and another fish dish. Similarly, they were decent. One diner had a cocktail and though it advertised elderflower and various citrus flavors it just tasted of lemon. The service was -- serviceable. They took our order. They refilled our water. That's about it. They did not offer bread refills, coffee refills, or dessert! They kept trying to clear one diners plate when he wasn't finished. They also brought to go boxes while 2/4 diners were still eating. Ok this dessert thing was weird. They never asked if we wanted dessert menus. They brought a free dessert ( fun getting cake) to our sailor with "congratulations " written in chocolate or jam. That was appreciated but again, weird not to ask any of us if we wanted dessert. Original plan for having thanksgiving dinner at White Hart Pub didn't work out coz the place was packed, retreated to The English Room, which was pleasant surprise! I always thought it would be too stuffy for my liking, but since it wasn't that crowded and there were families with younger children, the dinner went well with great service and great food! My in laws seem to enjoy it as well, which was great. If I have to nitpick, the server should probably know the source of the food...Fanny Bay (oysters) is not on the east coast. read more

This is a restaurant inside The Deer Path Inn. Lovely environment with most peaceful atmosphere for gatherings or business meals. The Breadless Egg Benedict was a bit disappointed because it was very plain. The heirloom tomatoes was not ripe enough, so it has the pungent smells of the raw tomato. Our other two meals were prepared well and tasted great. We loved the desserts we ordered, the crème brûlée and the Coconut Trifle was just perfect. Where to celebrate a special occasion? Your estate in the country? Will & Kate's little English manor? If those venues are not available to you, perhaps you'll stop by The English Room at The Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. It does feel like you're tucked away in a little ole corner of some Lord or Lady's country home in Berkshire, and not suburban Chicago. Uniformed staff opened the doors for us as we descended into the wood paneled /libraryesque room and then on to a charming garden room that looked onto the lovely patio. We were presented with flutes of champagne for our anniversary. There were other parties celebrating special occasions (a 70-year-old's bday), and most diners were dressed accordingly. We shared calamari and smelts (calamari - great, but I'm still not a fan of smelt). I enjoyed a French onion soup (could have had a stretchier cheese pull) and my companion had a wedge salad. I had the Alaskan halibut and they ordered the Scottish salmon (they were amazed by the baby artichokes). Both entrees were good, fish cooked perfectly, rich and flavored sauces, nice presentation. The service was correct and formal. A surprise- they presented us with a slice of cake with "Happy Anniversary." We had a very nice meal, elegant and traditional. This is where you celebrate an occasion. We have had brunch here before and that is certainly worthy of a celebration. read more

Overall a huge disappointment. Gone is the elegance, charm and "calm" of the English Room. I don't know the identity they are seeking or trying to convey in the "new" Brasserie. It no longer feels like fine dining. Seating is horrible. Two large banquettes flank the left and right sides of the restaurant. They featured seating for parties of 2 or 4. There were a few tables for four in the middle. We were seated at one of the few tables for two which was about 20" (maybe) in width. Seemed more like the size of table you'd find in a cocktail bar. Difficult to find space for water glasses, drink glasses, plates of rolls and butter etc. No privacy - there's maybe 16" of space in between the banquette tables. Highly uncomfortable. You become part of surrounding conversations whether or not you want to be. Ordered wine only to find out about 10 minutes later they didn't have it. Mixed drink with premium liquor was off balance. $10 for a bottle of still water. Flounder was good and plentiful, however, it was accompanied only by (3) 1/4" slices of fingerling potatoes and what appeared to be half of a stalk of asparagus cut into 1/2" pieces, with the emphasis on stalk. Dessert was ok. Service was very good - kind servers still abound. Over $200 for dinner for two people for nothing special in the way of a pleasant dining experience. Sad to say we won't be going back. We loved Deerpath and it had been our favorite place to celebrate, dine and just plain relax for a very, very long time. It's a loss for sure. read more

English teatime was fun and flavorful. The Castleton beat the Cherry Fig but to each one's own and there are more teas to try. Very thoughtful to receive a dietary restriction call the day before our reservation. Fantastic table service overall and very American, meaning friendly and upbeat (was this how service was in the 1920s?). Don't be surprised if the manager visits your table to see how you're doing. At first I thought she thought we were unhappy but, no, all tables had gotten that considerate visitation. The valet parking was free but bring cash for the tip. Lovely interior. Does it remind one of something in England? Depends on what part. It's not something in Hyde Park or Aldwych/Strand, each of which had a brighter, more twinkly, more formal atmosphere but, with our upbringings, lesser-appreciated finger sandwiches. Lighting and décor here instead elicited a mashup of a very clean, upscale yet Midwestern-comfy Rye, NY restaurant. Teatime reservations were booked for January 2026 and I was told that the room will be closed the succeeding February for systems maintenance/upgrades. Hope to revisit in March. read more

Table placement required service to constantly put their arms, hands, Armpits over my husband's and my son's plates to hand me items or pour water. Seat placement also meant I was pre-bussing the table to the server as well. Ordered rare filet mignon and received a filet that was medium. I couldn't eat it and finally sent it back and they took it off the bill. My husband ordered a medium rare lamb and it also arrived medium to medium well. He was too hungry to send it back. Had an absolute amazing time taking my daughter for her first formal tea time. They have their personal tea blends as well as traditional and non caffeine options. The staff is attentive and the pricing is reasonable. Pictured is what's served with your choice of tea and they also offered a kid friendly set especially for the Littles. Valet is available as well as street parking and there is a parking area across the street from the Inn where the English Room is located. So excited for this to be our new tradition. read more

I really wanted to love the English Room. However, I must report a "mixed" review. First, the good. We had the onion soup to start and it was delicious! The flavor was spot on - not too salty but beefy. The mix of cheeses on top were grilled to perfection. My only comment was that it could have used more onions but that may have been due to it not being stirred up in the large pot in the kitchen prior to plating into our bowls? For the main courses we had the Dover Sole and the Filet au Poivre. We wanted to split the two entrees between us. When the waiter presented our entrees he gave us half the fish on each of our plates but the steak remained on one plate. He said the chef said he could not put the steak on each of our plates due to him not being able to split the potatoes, which we found "odd" is the potatoes were puréed? The Sole was ok. It was a tad overcooked and the almond crust was a very thin almost powder of almond which you could not taste. The steak again was ok. The "au poivre" seemed to be missing. The accompaniments to the dishes, especially the vegetable fricassee, were tasty. Also the cippollini onions were sliced and very large which I had never seen. I always have seen these served as small whole onions. Now to the bad. The service was not good. Our server never introduced himself or told us about the specials that night and was not what I would expect when dining. Also, people seemed to be ordering items which were not on the menu. When I asked him about this we were told there was another menu from the bar area which we could have ordered from but never received. I don't think in fairness the waiter was properly trained - maybe he was filling in for someone? We overheard another waiter, I believe his name was George, constantly introducing himself and who appeared to be very professional and really looking after people. As an example, we ordered two drinks - (wine and a cocktail) and our waiter had to ask who ordered which drink as he did not know. The plates sat empty in front of us forever before being cleared away despite the fact that many other staff from the restaurant seemed to be wandering between tables without doing anything. In addition to a "fast service restaurant attitude" he brought our steak knives out after serving our steak. I had already tried to cut the meat without the steak knife when he arrived with it. Also, my husband not only had to ask for more coffee (his cup was empty for some time) but had to wait almost 15 minutes after he had asked our waiter for it and then he had to ask another waiter for it as our waiter had disappeared. This needs to be fixed! I love the hotel and the pub and bar in the basement where we have enjoyed a good meal many times. Literally the worst service of any high-end restaurant in the North shore. For example it took 40 minutes to get water and we sat without silverware for 20 minutes after being served our appetizer. Other tables were just as upset and there is a reason why recent reviews are complaining about the service just as us. When I asked for a manager while we were walking out, a guy in a tshirt ran up and when I asked if he was the manager he replied "yeah I guess". This place has gone down hill completely. Perfect Place For Elegant Lunch. I dined here today with a friend and it was an excellent dining experience. We were seated in the greenhouse area looking out onto the patio. Even though the weather looked threatening, the atmosphere was bright and lovely. We started with a glass of wine while catching up. I had the zucchini and carrot spiral "pasta" with shrimp. It was delectable! My friend had the lobster and lump crab ravioli which she said were delicious. The entrees were accompanied by wonderful fresh baked rolls. We split the sticky toffee pudding dessert which came with a scoop of maple flavored ice cream. Our server was helpful in answering questions and making recommendations for wine. It was pure pleasure to sit in a beautiful place, eat wonderfully prepared food, and relax. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend it.
