An exquisite anniversary dinner. The barn hit all the notes for us. A dim lit interior makes the restaurant feel cozy. We arrived and were quickly shown to our table. The servers were attentive but we could have used another check in or two during our meal. There were a few times we needed something but couldn't get the attention of our waitress. We started by splitting the little gem and creamy Dijon salad. It was so fresh and flavorful. The lettuce was crisp and every piece of bacon I came across was a delightful and crispy little nugget of goodness. The bread, butter, and flaky seat salt served alongside it was unreal - one of those bites that makes you close your eyes and soak in the moment it was so good. For an entree, I got the Za'atar roasted half chicken and a side of the robuchon potatoes. The chicken was tender, flavorful, and a very generous portion. I made two meals out of it. The knob onions were an excellent bread for something fresh and crunchy. The potatoes were creamy and were definitely enough for two. I was so excited to eat my leftovers the next day. My wife and I recently had dinner at the Barn for my 40th Birthday. It was an overall mixed experience. The service was largely great, and we were seated at a great table that followed my wife's request. One oddity was the over sharing about a new chef, the menu imminently changing, which didn't instill a lot of confidence when selecting a meal. I do appreciate the half glass opens for wine. My wife and I are no longer big drinkers, and it gave an opportunity to try a couple of different wines. We started with the shrimp cocktail - it was fine - 3/5 stars. My biggest gripe was that the shrimp were not deveined properly, and I hate having to clean crap out of shrimp at a higher end restaurant. My wife went with the filet and I had the dry aged ribeye - we ordered the mashed potatoes and asparagus sides (added the bernaise). The ribeye was very disappointing, it was an exceptionally thin cut, which is not what I would expect for that price point. Additionally, the amount of au poivre sauce provided was laughable. The bernaise... it was thicker than butter and impossible to pour over the asparagus. The mashed potatoes were great. Overall 2.5/5 stars For dessert, we had the apple cake, which was good, but nothing to write home about. 3.5/5 stars I'd consider coming back in the future, maybe once they've adjusted to the new chef. I've been dying to check out the barn and used the opportunity to check it out for my husbands 40th and this location was much closer then Evanston. For starters what a handsome space!!!! And rumor has it they are opening a speakeasy soon so I will for sure be back! Food. Service and drinks were delicious- a few hiccups but overall great. Drinks: Mortini Black manhattan Champs- Elysees Espresso martini Food: Oysters French onion soup Tuna tartare Bone in ribeye- many comments on this one. we ordered medium rare and it came out well done.. WELL DONE- this is kind of a big ball drop for a steak house. None the less it was corrected and it was good (would have liked a char on the steak though) We also added on shrimp with chili butter. They came out a bit over cooked and without chilli butter. The lovely waitress took it back and came back with the same shrimp covered in oil. Honestly for 15$ per shrimp this is def a skip. We were celebrating a birthday and tried this "meat-centric hideaway," a recently opened supper club in Highland Park. Hideaway is correct, as the windows are mirrored (can't look in) and the entrance is somewhat obscured and the signage is very discreet. Once you enter, it's a supper club with retro style and comfy leather seating, dark woods, rustic charm. We started with warm bread and butter with Maldon salt, shrimp zorine and a stable salad. I haven't dined at the other Barn outpost in Evanston, but I assume it's similar. The weekly specials sound delicious, and a good reason to make this a regular occasion. I haven't had a steak in a while but I indulged in the ribeye. And it was wonderful. The bonein ribeye, black angus steak, was so flavorful, cooked perfectly medium rare, and with a red wine Demi glacé and German butterball potatoes. My companion enjoyed the miso-glazed salmon with butternut squash. We also split creamed spinach with Gruyère and Pernod as well as roasted mushrooms (heavenly). It's nice to have an excellent steakhouse in this formerly empty spot. There is a Speakeasy planned (not sure if it was open yet) but these establishments bring some much needed life to downtown HP. Looking forward to a return visit and trying some specials-- Wed Chicken Pot Pie or Thursday Mafalda's Lasagna. read more

My husband and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary at The Barn. We were greeted my the staff, very welcoming, we loved the ambiance! The light was dim, very rustic but modern vibe, we really liked it. We started off with warm bread, lobster rolls , and a cheese plate, all were delicious! I'd suggest a few more toast points and honey on the cheese plate but otherwise it was great! My husband and I shared the Tomahawk steak - the red wine demi-glacé was DELICIOUS. We ordered a side of Brussels, which were also very good. The wait staff were attentive and very helpful when making suggestions. Was super excited to try The Barn Steakhouse in Highland Park! The space is beautifully designed warm, cozy, and definitely gives that upscale supper club vibe without feeling too stuffy. It's the kind of place you want to settle into for a long dinner. We started with cocktails, which were honestly just okay. Not bad, but nothing memorable especially if you're used to more balanced drinks. However,the caviar sandwich was a lot like, very heavy on the caviar in the best possible way. Super indulgent and one of those dishes you kind of love for how over-the-top it is Tuna tartare was solid. Fresh, clean, no complaints, but not something I'd go out of my way for again. The burger was a big miss for me, way too salty, which threw off the whole dish. BUT... the dry-aged steak completely redeemed the meal. Cooked perfectly, great flavor, exactly what you want from a steakhouse. That's where they really shine. Overall, it feels like a place still finding its rhythm. I'm a regular at Amy Morton's "The Barn" in Evanston, so when she opened this new location in Highland Park, I had to check it out. We had a 7:15 reservation and the place was buzzing. The dining room looks fantastic--new and exciting, yet warm and familiar. Plenty of touches that feel very "Evanston," but with their own fresh spin. They seated us in one of the classic curved red booths, linen tablecloths and all. Our server was attentive, friendly, and had drinks in front of us right away. I went with a gin and tonic made with Monkey 47, a German gin I first learned about from our server at The Barn in Evanston. Delish! The three of us intended to branch out... and then promptly ordered our usuals: a medium‑rare filet for me, miso‑glazed salmon and roasted chicken for my companions. And of course, an order of the arugula pistachio pesto Brussels sprouts to share--they're still the standout dish of the night. Everything was excellent, as always. The staff was there when we needed them and invisible when we didn't. We ate, we drank, we laughed, we caught up--and before we knew it, we'd closed the place down. When the weather warms up, we'll definitely be back. I hear Amy has an outdoor seating area planned, and that's going to be a great addition. Another big win for Amy Morton. read more

Dined here over the weekend. A bit disappointed with the service and food for a restaurant at this price point. The salad was tasty, but a bit small for the price. I ordered the filet Oscar style. I was disappointed to find that they added a balsamic reduction to the steak prior to adding the Oscar, a heavy vinegar glaze overpowered the creamy crab sauce. One would think for a 70$ steak and a 18$ sauce upgrade they would question the need for the standard balsamic sauce as part of the pairing. The chocolate cake was the best part. Service was extremely slow, we were seated 30 minutes before discussing the menu, and the food was just warm on arrival, we unexpected more for this establishment. read more

We REALLY wanted to love this place but left tonight wondering if we would be back again anytime soon. The space itself is gorgeous and rustic. Loved that! The lighting is a bit too bright for the space in our opinion, which could be overlooked. We were impressed that the acoustics were decent and there were no issues with noise levels. My date and I decided to split the Gem salad and the spicy rigatoni and sirloin burger. Our cocktails were excellent to start the meal, but things went a bit south from there. The Gem salad was limp and uninspired with a few pieces of brown limp lettuce and a rather small portion for the price. VERY disappointing way to kick off the meal. The spicy rigatoni came uninspired on a dinner plate and, while tasty, there was no effort made to bring the dish to life or make it stand out-- maybe a few sprigs of fresh basil or an offering of freshly grated cheese? Nothing. Just an uninspired boring plate of rigatoni noodles scattered about in a sauce. Next came the sirloin burger which we were VERY specific in our order that we wanted a medium-well cook with "no pink". It came medium with a good amount of pink in it. We get that it's not always easy for the chef to nail that cook but you would think our server would stop by at some point and ask if the burger was cooked correctly. Nope. The burger was quite tasty but unfortunately my date couldn't eat much of it because of the incorrect cook. The fries were excellent and we both enjoyed them and agreed they may have been the highlight of the meal which says a lot. The salad, burger and spicy rigatoni plus 3 drinks cost just under $170 before tip. We knew The Barn was a higher-end restaurant so the price didn't shock us. What did shock us was the lack of attention to detail and general indifference of our server in making the experience a special one. There are just too many other dining options to settle for one that makes such a bare bones effort at making the experience a special one. We do believe this place has a lot of potential but it fell short for us. read more

We had a delicious dinner for our first date night our post baby! Our server was so kind and attentive, the ambiance was quiet and elevated and the food was delicious!! We split the crab cake which we both agreed had the best sauce. I had the filet and my husband had the NY Strip... both were cooked perfectly. The Brussels sprouts are a must!! So good!! The food was fantastic as expected. This location is still undergoing first month glitches. The prix fixed menu is advertised on the web site as ending at 6:00. We booked and arrived at 5:30 to take advantage and told we were too late. The wait staff was attentive, but too much so. They hovered and asked if everything was good. And tried to remove a plate several times when I wasn't done. This was a conversation disrupter. The wait staff would be better if they told us they would be alert to us calling on them and then leaving us to talk. My wife is on a diet and felt compelled to explain to the waitress why she didn't finish her burger and didn't want it boxed. The waitress assumed there must be something wrong. I thought the waitress gave us wonderful service but the restaurant would be well served to lower the level of anxiety. And no, don't put up sound proofing ! Worth a special trip. It's just what Highland Park needed. And, yes, it's a steakhouse but the menu is so much more. The atmosphere is somewhat unique --almost like a speakeasy. Great great bar too. I ordered the walleye. It was good; but a herb / garnish got stuck in my throat. It took a while for me to get some relief. I had to go to the bathroom; and literally cough it out. My BF order steak all the time; and the quality of the steak that was served to him didn't turned out the way he expected. I am reaching with no biased. Missed the mark as a steak house imo. My partner's filet came out under cooked from requested temp and both my burger and my friend's were also. The burger had an odd greasy flavor I couldn't pin point and the fixings felt cheap. They should consider changing out the fries because they were no different than what you get at a fast food burger joint. Cocktails were good, quite strong actually. Prices decent and fair. Interior is odd, very dark entry way and you're greeted by an overwhelming crab/fish smell. Service was fast. So overall decent experience that I'd be willing to try again in 6 months or so, but food was somewhat disappointing. Addendum in response to the reply below: 3/25 dinner, group of 3. We did not bring it to our waiter's attention because we didn't want to wait for adjustments as it was fine to eat, just not to any of our liking or expectations. We were excited to go but at the end of the evening we were underwhelmed. The hostess leading us to the table commented that we will have the best seat in the place which ended up being in the direct path of the kitchen and bathroom! Our waiter provided great service! My Ranch Water came in a very tall slim glass which had a few small cubes of ice making it warm and not enjoyable. My husband enjoyed his steak but expected "excellent" from a well known steakhouse owner. It was underwhelming. My branzino was not paired well with the tiny diced sweet potato and it was soaked in butter. I may come back but only if someone else wants to try it. I really wanted to like this restaurant. Suburbs deserve it! Great atmosphere - dark, cozy. Warm bread that was great! But the meal was disappointing. Little Gem salad had a salad dressing that was similar to a Cesar dressing. Not great. Tuna tartar was too spicy (Dipescara's is way better). My husband said his Old Fashion was spicy and his burger had a sauce on it that was sour. My branzino had pickled sweet potatoes on it - not very complementary to the fish. Food was not good at all for an expensive restaurant. My steak was gristly and not tender. My girlfriend had the walleye and it had bones in it. Mashed potatoes looked like instant mashed potatoes. I've gotten way better food at the Longhorn Steak House for less than half the price I paid at The Barn. The filet was perfectly cooked and was very tender. The branzino was well cooked but the chimichurra sauce was very thin, had little flavor, and was very oily. The bits of sweet potato in it were hard and the server brought me another sauce with better cooked diced bits of potato. The sweet potato should have been a real side dish, not just bits. The filet came with smashed potatoes which also were pretty tasteless. The French onion soup was very tasty but it was in a smaller bowl than we are used to and there was little broth compared to the large amount of cheese. The desserts were not particularly appealing to us. I ordered a cappuccino and after my husband finished his dessert (root beer float) I had to remind the server about my coffee. The bread isn't crusty enough and was mediocre. A few drops of sauce spilled on the table and before the server finally got around to coming to wipe it up, we did so ourselves with our napkins. The restaurant is lovely, but the noise level is overwhelming and we left quickly to get away from it. We went there to celebrate my husband's birthday and I am disappointed we didn't have a better experience. read more
