I cannot recommend Hillcrest House enough!! If you are staying in San Diego you shouldn't pass up the opportunity to stay here. It really was the perfect stay! Such a cozy, safe, personable experience. Breakfast was delicious too :) Cozy and clean room: I stayed in the Coronado room which I recommend, the kitchenette was very convenient. The room was very clean. Fantastic location: Hillcrest is a walkable area, Hillcrest House BnB is within walking distance from so many great shops, restaurants, etc. It is also close to lots of nearby attractions accessible via public transit or a short drive (it is also close to the airport, which was convenient). Safety: I felt very safe here as a solo queer traveler. Great service: above and beyond customer service. Ann was lovely and very accommodating for everything, including my early check-in and letting me store my bags after check out. Email response time was always very speedy as well. read more

I stayed at this B&B last night and it was perfect! It is walking distance to stores, restaurants & night life on University Avenue. My husband & I decided to stay here based on the proximity to the SD Zoo, the price and especially the amazing reviews I read before. It was our first time staying at a B&B and it fit our needs. This place has 7 rooms of them are located in the back cottage. I stayed in the Balboa B room, the smallest room offered and it was perfect for us. Parking is enough for all guest to park inside of parking on the street, check in is super easy and breakfast is continental only, no hot items. Ann the host is very personable, gets to know each of her guests on a personal level and really makes you feel like you're family the moment you arrive. She also writes personal messages on her dining room mirror to her guests adding a special touch to your stay and also told us all about the history of the house. This was super cool! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for top quality, impeccable service, a clean and safe place to stay. Ann also offers suggestions on things to do and popular restaurants to try. Two items I would have liked to see offered in your own room was lotion and your own private mini fridge, but that wasn't a huge issue. read more

I stayed here for part of my honeymoon during the month of June. We were in the Coronado room. The room is located in the back of house, it has its own private entrance, small kitchenette: microwave, sink, and coffeemaker. The bed sheets are so soft and once you lay on them, you'll be fast asleep -- luxury 5,000 thread-count sheets. Ann was very friendly and nice with all her guest. I'm not sure what Vito (a few reviews down is talking about), but perhaps Vito was the one with the bad attitude. But anyways, back to the review, the place was very nice and is close to all the local touristy areas. My husband and I had a great time here and Ann provided a lot of places to go eat and see. The Hillcrest House is definitely a home away from home mixed with a little get away . . Me and my boyfriend came in from LA to continue my Birthday celebration , we booked the "LA Jolla " room and it was definitely relaxing and perfect for two. I've always wanted to experience a Bed and Breakfast and this definitely gave me the experience I imagined. There is a small parking area behind the house and on the side of the house for guest only. Ann was a great host she was beyond welcoming and nice . She gave us the perfect tips for places we were visiting or where to go for a relaxing and beautiful time . Breakfast was from 8:30-10am which was buffet style with the ranges of Fresh cut fruit , toast jam and peanut butter , cereal, orange juice , milk & Hot coffee or tea and the Most wonderful freshly baked Muffins (Ann's specials lol ) they were wonderful ! She also kept out water bottles , apples and other grab and goes which were downstairs whenever we wanted, at anytime . The rooms came with fresh towels and shampoo, conditioner and soap along with plenty of tissue . Our room came with our own coffee maker , microwave, and mini fridge . Coffee ,sugar , tea bags , mugs , Wine glasses and opener . We didn't need anything but if we did Ann was a call away (Knowing this was great ) and down stairs had everything else . Rooms were cleaned everyday and beds were made along with fresh towels . Everything was wonderful and peaceful we weren't bothered at all and it was almost as if we were in our own place . Service: Ann and her staff are very warm, welcoming and hospitable. They work hard to sustain their business with repeat customers and it shows. We'll definitely be back. Breakfast: Good and healthy. Includes hard boiled eggs, mini muffins, fruit, yogurt, toast with peanut butter and (I think) home-made jam. Her coffee is excellent and she also serves tea, orange juice and milk. Bed (Room): Good comfortable room & bed. Good size if you just plan on sleeping there and spending most of your time exploring San Diego. The room doesn't have a table, but there are some outside if you want to sit outside and eat your takeout. Accessibility: We stayed in the Coronado room because there are no stairs leading up to it. While the room itself is accessible via a steep ramp, the shower/bath is deep and does not have any grab bars. The bed is also quite high off the ground. Also there are only stairs leading up to the reception office/dining room where breakfast is served. But Ann and her staff are so hospitable that I can confidently say she'd accommodate your checkin/checkout & breakfast service however you need. My wife and I stayed here 10/27-10/29 for a couple of nights. It was the perfect accomodation for us. We originally booked the Balboa suite but were upgraded to La Jolla, which was fantastic - spacious, with a large jacuzzi tub and the king bed had the softest sheets we've ever slept on. Parking was in the driveway, a bit tight, but very easy and convenient. Ann was a wonderful host. It's rare to find a place that's in the heart of San Diego that has free parking, free bfast, and free WiFi and the Hillcrest House had all 3 for an affordable price, the house was clean with lots of classy details. Stayed in the Coronado room, which was the perfect size for my hubby and myself. It had its own parking spot in the back and private entrance. The jacuzzi bathtub and shower combo was great for a relaxing soak and the bathroom was very spacious. Great use of space, adequate kitchen necessities and very clean from top to bottom. It's located smack dab in the middle of Hillcrest without hearing the hustle and bustle, except some occasional late night traffic noises, which is normal for that area. So you get another one star for customer service. Instead of listening to what your customer experienced and finding ways to improve, you blamed the customer, and you said you won something something to prove them wrong. It has been a treat staying at Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast. Details are everything and the Hillcrest House gave me the design fix I was hungry for. Lovely vintage place. The staff are always making sure your stay has everything you need. We stayed in a queen cottage room outside of the main house. Room is on the smaller side but full of amenities. The bed was so comfy and the sheets were so soft. Our nights were very quiet which is wonderful when your staying at a hotel and need a quiet relaxing night. The breakfast let me tell you I was quite surprised. I thought it was going to be just muffins and coffee but nope we had a lot to choose from. Very intimate breakfast with healthy options to choose from down to almond milk for the cereal. I can't say enough about this little gem I found in San Diego. This will be our only place we will be staying at when we visit San Diego. And the best part the hotel accepts dogs! read more

I actually only live about five blocks away. My fiancée and I stayed here to escape my own house guests (just kidding mom!) and it was absolutely marvelous. Super nice and very comfortable room. Immaculately clean and well maintained. Walking distance to the bars, restaurants and general shenanigans to be found in Hillcrest. My fiance and I stayed here over the Memorial Day weekend. We stayed in the Gaslamp room, located on the second floor. We had a late flight and went through the late check-in process. This was basically getting an envelope in the front door mail box to receive keys and instructions. When we arrived, we ran into Ann and she gave us a quick run down of the place. Quaint home, with nice decor (inside and outside), and feels homey. The place looked like it was kept clean. The stairs to the second floor and in the Gaslamp room, had that typical "old" home smell. The room itself is pretty small, a little cramped for two people, but manageable. I liked the fold down wooden desk in the corner. My fiance and I had two carry on suitcases, which we were able to squeeze in one corner, both fully opened. If we had any bigger luggage, it would not fit. There was a window AC unit and portable heater provided. As well as a small mounted TV. The walls aren't sound proof and since the AC unit is in the window, you can hear the sounds from the outside. If you are a light sleeper, I recommend wearing ear plugs. The bedroom sheets were quite soft and smooth. If you liked them, they are available for purchase at the small gift shop on the main floor, along with mugs, soap, etc. The head pillow instantly collapses under the weight of your head. The bathroom is long and narrow. There is a small stand holding towels. There is a small glass ledge above the sink. It would have been nice if there was also a small table beside the sink to hold my other toiletries, cream, medicine, etc. The shower was a decent size. The location of the tap didn't make much sense to me, it was located too far into the shower and away from the opening of the door. You had to first move the spray nozzle towards the shower wall before turning on the water, otherwise you'll get hit with a blast of cold water. Then after the water warms up (takes a few minutes), re-position the spray nozzle to the center of the shower. The location of the toilet was too close to the bathroom sink. You have to sit at a diagonal on the seat, otherwise you'll hit into the side of the sink. Breakfast is provided, starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 10 AM. It would have been even better if it started 30 minutes earlier, as some San Diego attractions open at 9 AM. Breakfast consists of: an assortment of cut up fruit (cantaloupe, tiny grapes, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries and bananas), sliced bread that can be toasted with crunchy peanut butter or jam spread, hard boiled eggs, mini muffins (type changed daily), granola, corn flakes, orange juice, milk (with alternative - almond milk), coffee and tea. Upon check out, we needed to store our luggage there for the day. Since there was no one checking into the room that same day, Ann was nice enough to let us store our luggage there. We were also welcome to still use the facilities (e.g. shower, etc.) upon our return to grab our luggage. We locked up both the room and house, and left they key in the mailbox per instructions. read more

I stayed a night at the Hillcrest House for a job interview the next morning, and it was such a wonderful deicison! From the start, Ann was so helpful and available to help me answer questions about my parking, checking-in after hours, etc. and was even nice enough to upgrade my room free of charge! The Balboa room was the perfect size for me with a large bed, central AC, and private bathroom that was clean and had all the complimentary amenities! The next morning, I woke up to the sweetest little breakfast buffet prepared by Ann herself, with a vide variety of healthy foods and her house-made coffee (which was so good!!). For me however, I don't bar hop, and rise early and need coffee ASAP in the morning :/. However.... This place was super cute-- really warm and inviting decor. Anne was truly a great lady, very friendly and helpful. Very clean and the bed in the Balboa room was extra comfy! Good parking in a noisy busy spot of town, with lots of places to walk to and grab a bite. We paid $150 for a tiny room, with a small private bathroom in it. Anne does quite a bit to make you feel at home in her decor and the way the place is set up. Only thoughts to have made it better (for us) is a bigger tv in the room to watch a late night movie, a bigger space, and a hot breakfast instead of a continental one. Having off street parking in San Diego is HUGE! We stayed in the La Jolla suite and it is FABULOUS! Sometimes pics can look better than the real thing but not the case here this room is everything and more the bed was a dream and the jacuzzi tub was such a luxury. Hillcrest is an amazing town everyone is so friendly and fabulous we ate at Empire urban palate twice don't miss it! We also did the 7 bridge walk around San Diego even in the pouring rain it was amazing. It was my one-year anniversary, so my partner and I decided to spend it in San Diego. We booked with Hillcrest as an affordable and more intimate option rather than an Airbnb or hotel. We stayed for one night in the Gaslamp Room and upon booking several months ago, Ann was very hospitable in answering questions and offering several options on check-in and bag drop off depending on how we'd be coming into San Diego. Upon arrival on Monday, she gave us a map of the area and offered suggestions on places to eat or spend the evening after we'd gotten settled in. The room we stayed in was very comfortable and clean and perfect for two people staying one night. I recommend if you stay longer than two nights to have one of the larger rooms, but as the smallest one available, it worked perfectly. There was plenty of drawer space and a gracious sized glass shower, and the bed was so soft with a lot of support that I hardly wanted to get up in the morning. The sheets were some of the cleanest I've ever seen and more soft to the touch than a standard hotel. You can really tell there's a lot of care that goes into the housekeeping. The decor was simple and sweet, the atmosphere quiet and intimate, and since we were visiting the Monday after Comic-Con, Ann had decorations around the dining area for return guests staying for the convention. The family-feel of it all was very unique compared to other places I've stayed. The location is also very close to some of San Diego's hot spots, so if you drive or take an Uber/Lyft, it's a quick trip to and from your destinations. Breakfast in the morning was a small selection of fresh fruits and baked goods with cereal, yogurt, milk, juices, and coffee. It hit the spot perfectly and gave us both a fresh start to the day. The conversation with Ann and other guests staying the night was nice and relaxed, and check-out was as simple as dropping off the key at the breakfast table. I loved our stay and plan on staying again any time I find myself in San Diego, and I highly recommend others to stay here as well. You're not only saving more per night compared to other options, but you're getting a more personalized experience. I'm looking forward to staying again in the future, Ann. Other peoples' mileage may vary, of course, but I am disappointed in the Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast. I signed up for a weekend stay with them because they were very near the course of the Rock And Roll, San Diego half and full marathon. Like most people who are not lawyers and do not have a lot of time on their hands, I clicked through the Terms Of Agreement (don't you do this EVERY time you update your Apple or iTunes software?). Approximately 6 days before the marathon, my Mother In Law died. We cancelled, via telephone. Ann Callahan told me the cancellation charge was just over $200!!! Actually, it is one-night's room rate PLUS the tax the City would have earned from her and the .55% TMD fee (NOT REAL LOSSES SHE INCURRED). She could probably heard my jaw when it hit the floor. She did finally offer to refund totally should she be able to get someone else to fill the vacancy on the weekend with the very popular summer event nearby. Apparently that never happened, as I never heard from her. I contested via my credit card company, and lost. Well, there goes $200 less to pay for the funeral. I am sure she feels vindicated, and that is fine. I don't hold any grudges against her or her establishment even though it is hard to imagine her not being able to fill that room on such a popular weekend and with nearly a week's notice. No, I'm writing this Yelp review to express my disappointment in her customer service, her not following through on a promise, and to make others WELL aware of her draconian refund policy so they are not also taken by surprise. The customer is not always right at Hillcrest House, and you are treated like a dollar-bill, not a person. Caveat Emptor. I am sure she has her empathy-lacking, non-compassionate, business-first, Trump-like perspective, with which she will reply to this review as a rebuttal. I am sure she is fully justified in her mind and sleeps well at night. In the end she is, legally and business-wise, correct. However, if you are a millennial that spends much of your money on travel and experiences, and human factors are important to you, this may not be the place you want to stay. The only thing I am pretty sure of, she lost a future customer. We take weekenders down to San Diego County a couple times a year, but I am unlikely to utilize her establishment. read more

We just arrived. Day 1. The experience has been great so far! Our precious host & hostess have been wonderful. No one has arrived yet and the Bed & Breakfast will be full by tonight. We got a nice tour of all the different rooms. We are staying in the "Zoo" room. :) The next time we stay here, we will be staying in the Coronado Suite. That room is the best and the most private! This place is totally awesome! We have been coming here now for 5 years to celebrate our anniversary. I would not even consider going anywhere else. Each room is decorated differently. My favorite is the Zoo Room. I also like the downstairs room with the private patio. The house is immaculate! And I alway feel comfortable and very welcomed. Breakfast is fun! I enjoy meeting and eating with other guests. Ann makes these "to die for"mini bite size muffins fresh every morning. I wake up to the smell of brewing coffee and fresh baked goodies. Of course she offers other breakfast items as well. She goes out of her way to make your experience pleasant. She actually deserves 10 stars! read more

It is really an incredible value in a great walkable location, and the owner is so friendly and helpful. Rooms are modern and clean. The continental breakfast is great. We will stay here every time we are in San Diego. We stayed in the Coronado suite and I do agree with a couple other reviewers that the water pressure was low in the shower, and there was a bit of noise from the next room and from cars in the alley. Normally these things bother me, but honestly, everything else was so great that I didn't mind, especially for the very reasonable price (even on President's Day weekend). p.s., the Afghani restaurant nearby (Khyber Pass) is delicious. read more

I stayed in the Hillcrest House originally for 3 nights when my mother and I first came to San Diego to move me out here. We enjoyed spending the mornings talking to Ann and the other guests over breakfast. She provided us with tips and tricks for the city, as well as hook-ups for the best tours and restaurants. These are free amenities in themselves that you can't get from a hotel! Our room and the rest of the house were so beautiful, clean and perfectly cozy. The sheets were the most amazing part of the room! I don't know where she gets them, but I'm buying a set from her next week! It was like sleeping on clouds :] The location was perfect, right by Balboa, Downtown, and one of San Diego's hippest neighborhoods. We could walk to everything we needed and the house has parking in the back, as well as ample street parking. To make a long story short, I ended up booking for 3 more nights after my mother left San Diego and I am so glad I did. It was such a treasure to be able to talk with Ann, and the rest of the guests more. By the end of my stay, I thought I lived there! Ann was more than helpful and you bet I will stop by every once in a while to visit and have a cup of the best coffee in San Diego. I recommend no other place to stay in the city, and Hillcrest House has officially become the ONLY place my family will be staying in San Diego when they come to visit. The good: Very clean, very aesthetically appealing, simple but delish breakfast and close to tons of great restaurants, free WiFi, free loaner DVD's and books, good coffee in the rooms, very friendly inn keeper (ann was on vacation), bed was very comfortable and within a short drive to the gas lamp or harbor. The not so good: Water pressure was low in the shower. Walls are thin so you can hear the stuff going on around you (even in the Coronado suite) and the tv was tiny. But who comes to a B&B to watch TV? Exactly. That being said, overall it was a great 2 night stay. If the worst thing about our stay was low water pressure? My GF and I stayed at the Hillcrest House for 2 nights between Christmas and New Years. We were in town for a High School basketball tournament. We looked at all the normal bland, chain hotels and we really wanted something with a little more flavor. I looked through Yelp and stumbled upon the Hillcrest House. Our stay there was wonderful and we were really happy we made the decision to go this way. Ann was on vacation but Thea (sp?) was filling in. She was delightful and very accommodating. We stayed in the Coronado room and it felt like we had our very own hideaway inside San Diego. You can park right outside the room and you have your own entrance. I thought the bed was so very cozy and the linens and towels were all top notch. The wifi wasn't super strong but passable and the TV was small but who stays at a B&B for the TV??? The neighborhood surrounding was lively and there were lots of places to eat that a really within walking distance. There is a couple of Grocery stores within a mile or two which is very convenient as well. We loved our stay there and would happily stay there again if we return to San Diego. read more

We booked the Hillcrest House because my husband was having a heart procedure at Sharp Memorial and we live almost two hours away. This B & B was just five miles away so it was perfect! The original plan was to stay two nights! But due to a complication the stay was two nights for Hubby and me and I stayed an additional two nights while hubby was in hospital. When we arrived...We were greeted by Ann the owner, she was very friendly and made us instantly feel like family!!! She also went above and beyond to make sure she had a little breakfast to go each morning for me! When it was obvious that my husband and I were a bit nervous she reassure us that these procedures were old hat and it would all be fine!! She also made sure when I called her two days in a row to extend my room she did it!! We stayed in the Zoo room is was very very clean (important to us) and big enough!! Although the bathroom was fairly large!!!! It was the perfect place to sleep and relax... This B & B is located in Hillcrest which has a ton of amazing restaurants!!! And Ann gave us some good tips on where to eat!! It is also so close to so many of the San Diego attractions. The day before surgery we drove to Coronado Island and hung out for a few hours, it was like a 15 minute drive with some light traffic ... I can't wait for Tony and I to return for a FUN TRIP!! I would book the zoo room again and I am excited to really enjoy the front porch with a glass of wine!!! And I can't wait to explore more of the area!
