Claimed FREE estimate but wanted to charge $50 to just look at my clocks. Made excuse that the money was to make visit.

He came to our home and explained it might need more than a cleaning before he looked at it. Very nice man. Clock had never been worked on befor now. He took the face of the clock off to inspect the movement. He oiled the clock and got it working in less than an hour. The cost was $175.00. I had no problem with the cost. A week later it stop running I restarted as he had told me this might happen a few times until the oil worked into the moving parts. It ran two more weeks and then stopped again. I contacted tenor to explain what was happening with the clock. He said I need to come get the movement and take it to the shop. The cost would be an additional $300.00 more than the $175.00 I gave him 4 weeks earlier. Never discussed looking at the clock, just that it would have to go to the shop.the first time he came to oil the clock he was telling me how clean the clock was, he couldn't see any wear on the clock parts, that would cause the clock to need repair. I took a vintage backlit clock to him for repair. The movement was not working. Rather than remove the metal tabs surrounding the glass to be able to get at the movement, he cut a large whole in the back of the clock to get at it. Secondly, he told me that he couldn't get a replacement movement exactly like the original and ordered another that he felt would work. I trusted him on this and agreed to that. What he didn't tell me was that the replacement motor was not going to be mounted to the metal backpiece (that he cut out). He mounted it to the front of the clock face (inside) vs. the back of the clock. He told me (but didn't show me) when I picked up the clock that I would be able to see the mounting plate he installed when I plugged it in but that if I installed an LED light strip on the inside of the frame, I wouldn't be able to see the shadow of the mounting plate when it was lit up. I should have realized that was total nonsense as any light inside the clock frame is going to help illuminate the shadow of the movement he installed. So...I have attached a photo of how the vintage light looks when lit. It does keep time now but looks totally cobbled up in my opinion. It basically ruined the clock when it's lit. My next step will be to find someone who really knows what they are doing because I can't use this clock as it was returned to me.
