If you are looking for MEDIOCRE food with ZERO service this is a perfect place to go. We were a party of 8 and Stopped by on our way to Houston. Ambience was good but food and service were not good. We entered at 8:30pm and ordered our food within 15 mins. We got our food at 9:15 and what we were shocked was the quantity. They gave each of us a tablespoon of rice and also switched the beans from black beans to pinto beans. I brought up the concern of the beans as we were vegetarians and the waiter replied that they ran out of black beans and rice which is why they provided small quantity. Also the pinto beans had Lard but they couldn't give us anything else because they were out. This conversation happened 45 mins before closing. I asked for the manager and Dylan (the supervisor) showed up. He was nice but he said he would see how he can take care of us but never showed up. We got our bill with no discount and paid it. We also tipped the waitress even though She was not nice as there is a Shortage of restaurant workers these days with the pandemic. read more

The nice part is it's close to the hotel and within walking distance. I'm not sure I will return here. I've eaten here twice in the past year and it's just OK. The owner replied. My response is: spice things up. It can't all be beans and rice. I had chicken fajitas. They were overcooked and tough. It needs more grilled onion and other spices. Whaaaat And for the first time that I've ever seen it on a menu, especially at a Mexican restaurant - big Romaine lettuce leaves instead of flour or corn tortillas although they offer those as well. Literally went here one time with my wife and another couple a couple of months back. Heard this place was great by others and this couple who are friends wanted to take me and my wife there as a treat. Well I wasn't impressed. First we waited a little while on a Sunday because they were busy. They got us seated in the back corner area. We ordered and waited an hour for the food. Waitress wasn't really available much. When we found out about the order they said the fish order wasn't put in by mistake and they were going to start it now. When the food finally came our food had been sitting for awhile because the food was cold and rubbery. Not cool. Asked to see manager and the waitress went to get the manager. CONCERNED I review abuelos often as well as pretty much everywhere I dine. It's is becoming a little disturbing have heard customers complain of 2 different occasions on how dirty their dishes are. I overheard a customer complain about a extra empty plate that was brought to them and was sent back and then the second plate was oily. The waitress just replied with " I don't know what they are doing in the back" and then the waitress continued complaining to those customers about how gross abuelos really is. Which of course made me question wanting to go back even though I really enjoy the food. Another visit the customer complained about lip marks on the glass that was just brought to the table. Then I decided to look for the abuelos in Lubbock on yelp because I will down there today and I read a few reviews about how gross the dishes there are along with rude staff. I wonder if maybe it's time to step up the kitchen management a little bit? I'm not sure I'll be returning to abuelos unfortunately This next review was from my last visit before I decided I had to write the above statement Love everything about this place. But service tonight with a little rough. Our waitress did an awesome job but she was spread thin with the amount of table she had. Wasn't really that busy. Just makes me a little nervous to go eat when they are busy. Almost a 2-hour visit which normally is about a 45 minute visit. We were seated at our table for almost 20 minutes before we got chips or drinks. I had the half chicken and half steak fajitas with the veggies well done. And my veggies were still pretty raw and the fajitas skillet wasn't even sizzling when it was brought out. I came here on a Sunday evening to get some dinner. Am in town on business and read some reviews on how it's great food. My review is only on the food as the server was actually great. He was very attentive and was good on letting me know what he thought was good there. When it comes to the food, I ordered the pork medallions wrapped in bacon. You get two enchiladas so I picked shredded beef and carnitas. The pork medallions were average, not the best but also not the worst. Just nothing additional in the flavor that screamed best thing on the menu. My shredded beef enchilada was ok as well, the beef would not "shred" as easily as I thought it would and I had to use a knife for it. The carnitas enchilada were good but I felt as if there was more green chili than carnitas in my enchilada. These items were paired with bland beans and a mashed potato with cheese and onions that I didn't care for too much. Overall, I thought it would be more authentic mexican but it was more tex mex. Maybe that's my fault for not looking through the menu beforehand. read more

We were traveling route 66. A local recommended Abuelo's as great Tex Mex. They were right. We came during the COVID-19 pandemic. All staff were wearing masks. Tables had been removed for social distancing. The waitress was prompt and courteous. The decor was appropriate. The bathrooms clean. The portions large. Oh, and the food was fantastic! Great Tex Mex, love the salsa and enchiladas. Huge menu, with lots of choices. I like the three enchilada deal, where you can pick any three you like. They have a selection of carnitas, beef, chicken, spinach, cheese or avocado.and a choice of different sauces for each one. I picked the spinach, carnitas and beef . You have to remember, it's not Mexican, it's TexMex. I grew up in San Diego, and if you're looking for that style of Mexican food, around here, good luck. Abuelo's - 7:00pm - 9.25.15 We showed up at Abuelo's just before 7pm. The hostess was kind and she gave us a buzzer, with an estimate of a 10-15 minute wait. She was spot on. Just under 10 minutes and our table was ready. Our server, Matthew was great. He was prompt with requests and he made solid recommendations. Chips and salsa were never empty. Travis and I ordered Jack & Coke and the bartender made them super stiff. Two enthusiastic thumbs up! We ordered queso and the green chili quesadillas for appetizers. Creamy and steaming hot, the queso really hit the spot, and it had the perfect texture. I LOVE their green salsa. I'm not sure what all is in it, but it's fruity and tastes like kiwi, it's a wonderful departure from the classic salsa. The green chili quesadilla wasn't my favorite. To begin with, some of the tortilla was soggy, but the parts that were nicely toasted were delicious. The dish contained lots of bell peppers and tomatoes, but the green chili component seemed to be a little lacking for being the namesake. It was okay, but I like some of their other appetizers better. Travis ordered the pork tenderloin with the honey-chili glaze. It was really tasty, and the glaze was sweet with a nice kick. The pork was perfectly cooked, nice caramelized bits outside and juicy inside. Mom and I shared the combo beef and chicken fajitas. I asked Matthew if the beef fajitas are tender, so many places serve shoe leather as beef fajitas. The beef was indeed tender, and it had a good flavor. I ran across a couple of chewy pieces of beef, but nothing bad enough to complain about. Grilled to perfection, the chicken had the char that I love and maintained its juiciness as well. My favorite part is always the tortillas (yay, carbs!) and they were soft and fresh, as always. Mom ordered the Dulce De Leche Cheesecake to go, to take back to Dumas for later. Valerie our server was rude and lacking in customer service from minute one when we wanted to put our loyalty member number into the kiosk. One of our grown daughters waited 10 mins after everyone else was served for her dinner and our 7 yr old granddaughter for tortillas. Wine just put on the table in the bottle, not opened, she just walked away and when I wanted something I had to go thru my husband to get anything for our table of 12. Food was okay at best.
