Veggie combo #1 nestled in Injera
    Melinda E.

This is the best place in Erie County, NY for injera! The food is delicious & service is friendly. I particularly enjoy the vegetarian sampler with an extra side of injera. Please frequent this business, they have been through the rails at 617 Main Street (search articles to see what challenges they've overcome). Beyond satisfying! Thank you, Abyssinia!

Am surprised that it's been so long since i was last here; maybe i just didn't review it? anyway, ordered the misir wot (see description below). Unfortunately, it was way too spicy hot for me to eat but a bit of it, with the injera bread as a chaser, so i took most of it home. had to cut it with plain greek yogurt + a bit of sugar, and then it was fine. the green veggie, spinach, was really nicely seasoned, and the small green salad was just that. I sat outside b/c the music is so loud since the transformation to the international house. am not keen on all the lanterns, either; they seem to be a decorating attempt that missed the mark. As another reviewer noted, their food now is served in compostable containers; yay! i will return, and hopefully order something less spicy.

The food is very tasty and full of flavors straight from Ethiopia. The service is all done behind a counter. A person will take your order and then they give you a time clicker to wait for your food. The atmosphere is nice. The only thing is they're playing country music which I guess is neutral. I will be back for sure. Kitfo was my favorite when I visited Ethiopia and they have it here. I will definitely be back!!

    Chicken Tibs

Dining at Abyssinia in the downtown Buffalo food hall felt like a warm hug from family--truly comfort food at its best. The flavors transported me back to the nostalgia of home-cooked meals, and I loved that they made my dish spicier upon request. Chicken tibs were solid. The sauce is what makes the dish!! Portions were generous. In regards to service, my only complaint is that the wait is a little long, but the delicious food made it worthwhile. Ambiance is casual - it's located in a food hall. Good for groups or take out. I'll definitely be back to savor more of their offerings!

I've had Ethiopian food on my bucket list like forever, and I finally had the chance to try it. I came early for the AMC movie show next door and tried their assortment platter. Served on a huge round plate with a layer of fresh bread, I liked the chi-chi beans the best.

Haven't had Ethiopian in forever. We ordered the veggie combo and some meat entrees. Everything was tender and flavorful. The restaurant was inside this little center. It was cute. Food was prepared quick and staff was very nice. My fiance is kind of a picky eater and doesn't stray too far from chicken but he LOVED his first experience. We will definitely be back!!

I was super excited to try the Expo Market after it opened back up. It didn't disappoint. They have an incredible amount of choice for authentic food from all over the world. Service was fast and friendly. It has ton of seating too with a bar but you can always get your food to go. I'll definitely be coming back

Recently visited their new location in the downtown bazaar, and same great food and quick service! I ordered the vegetarian combo which was delicious. Came out in just a few minutes as well. Highly recommend!

This is some serious comfort food. Cooked by hand to order one customer at a time and well worth every bit of the 10-15 minute wait. We order two dinners and a half dozen vegetable samosas. One of the Vegetable Combination dinner and one Chicken Gefuma dinner. The veggies were served inside a large piece of soft fluffy bread/pancake that was closed over the food like an envelope. There were beets, a carrot and cabbage mix, chick peas, spinach, salad and lentils all in individual scoops inside this pancake. As beautiful to look at as to eat and they never got mixed up. Each one was absolutely delicious. The pancake was smooth on the outside and had bubble holes on the inside where the food was. Just the same as when you pour pancake batter and watch till right before you want to flip it, there are holes all through it and you know it's time to flip it, except they don't flip it because it's done. And it's a really large piece of bread/pancake about twice the size of a dinner plate. The chicken was flavorful with a hint of spiciness. A generous portion of seasoned chicken onions tomatoes and peppers on egg noodles with salad and cabbage, carrots and potatoes too. The samosas were smaller and tightly wrapped and served with spicy brown sauce that looked like mustard but wasn't! The staff was remarkable!!! Cheerful and hardworking. Everything was correct and it was clear they had a loyal following because there were lots of people picking up meals or waiting for their meals to eat right there. This was definitely a restaurant worth going and getting dinner especially when you miss that feeling of being loved with home cooking.

I only tried my free veggie bowl that I received for the Yelp event, Taste the World. It was very , very good. I highly recommend this if you go there. The employees were very friendly as well. That's all I've got for ya .

Sambusas (fried items) and Gomen (spicy red lentils), Kik Alicha (yellow split pea stew) and Mesiwot (spinach) over rice.
    Shannon R.

We stopped by the West Side Bazaar for lunch last Saturday and to pick up a few samples from a Yelp Elite event. We tried the Gomen, Kik Alicha and Misirwot with rice and sambusas. The white rice was very fragrant, the gomen is a spinach dish and had a nice flavor. The Misirwot was a serving of delicious red lentils with berbere seasonings and the Kik Alicha is made up of yellow split peas and tasted similar to a split pea soup but a little sweeter and spicier I'd say. I believe they use tumeric in it as well. The sambusas had a light dough and the filling was hearty and spicy. I's definitely go back because I thoroughly enjoyed the meal!

We had a vegetarian sampler and everything in it was spectacular. Great flavors, very quick service, and huge portions for an affordable price. We will definitely be back soon.

On my most recent visit, during lunch time with friends, we all had the all-you-can-eat buffet, which is a great value at $13.99 (current price). The woman serving us was very generous with the portions and also made sure we had plenty of injera bread to eat with it (though there is also rice on the buffet if you prefer.) Although I don't know the names of any of the things I ate, there were mild and spicy options, several kinds of lentils, a kind of pureed chickpea dish, sauteed/braised greens and two kinds of mixed veggies - one with carrots and one with cabbage. Although the buffet is all-you-can-eat, we were all stuffed and just managed to eat what we were served. A few side notes: -- Hours here on Yelp say they open at 11 am which is incorrect. They open at 12 pm each day of the week. -- There is street parking and in this section of the city, it is still free! -- Seating in the front room inside can accommodate approx 20 people. On the day we visited, we were a group of 4, and several singles came in, and two other groups of 4, and the place was packed -- There are also several meat options on the buffet; if you want the meat the buffet price increases by $1 -- Beverages are all in bottles - water, sodas, etc -- This place uses disposable paper plates and plastic cutlery -- Don't forget to ask about the samosas! They have a veggie one and a meat one, and though we forgot and were too full, they looked and smelled amazing!

We arrived at around 2pm so it was more of a late lunch and the restaurant was quiet save for a party of four. We were tossed up between the Lalibela Platter and the Family Platter but opted for the Family Platter since it offered more meat options. I was also pulled between the Special Hot Tea and the Ginger tea... this time I opted for both. The Ginger tea has a nice Ginger bite to it but the Special Hot Tea is really quite special. I would probably just order that one next time. Both were really good though. Everything available on the platter was delicious and I'm glad that we were able to try such a variety of items. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, one thing I did learn, I'm not very good at eating with my hands. The cuisine seems to have a mild to moderate heat, nothing too extreme, at least in this platter. Oddly enough though, it did leaving me wanting something sweet. The desserts on offer were carrot cake, ice cream and baklava. I just wanted something small and sweet that I could share so opted for the baklava. In fairness, when I asked how big it was (trying to decide if I needed to order one or two) she did say it was like a slice of cake but I guess I still didn't expect to be... like a slice of cake! I have never seen such a large piece of baklava before. It was fabulous! Our server was quick, attentive and friendly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant is you're in the area.

Wow! I'm definitely coming back here…read more I love Ethiopian food so once I saw an Ethiopian restaurant near me I knew I had to try it. The Vegetarian Bayaaynatu is a must get! I like lentils as much as the average person but oh god I didn't know it was possible to put this much flavor in lentils! It tastes so good especially with the injera bread. I just know that I'll be ordering the vegetarian bayaaynatu every single time I come here. This dish cemented this place as a staple for me! As for the meat Bayaaynatu, it comes with a serving of the Goreng Goreng and the Tibs. It says the Goreng Goreng is best served rare but I know myself and wouldn't be able to eat rare meat and ordered it medium and I really liked it! I'd definitely get it again, it tasted so flavorful and the meat was tender and cooked just right. As for the Tibs, it came out pinker than I'd like. It tasted ok, but it was definitely overshadowed by everything else on the plate and we didn't end up finishing it. I tried it out and it tasted fine but the pink color just freaked me out to be honest! All the table have no cutlery so you have to eat everything with your hands, which I personally love! I love the place's decorations and aesthetic, but it can get a bit stuffy.
