One of my favorite places for a comfort meal. I stopped in and got the combination plate with doro wat, beef tibs, cabbage, lentils, chickpeas, and spinach. Huge portion, flavorful food, and really kind service. The atmosphere was really nice too, jazz playing in the background made it feel cozy and relaxed. Everything had a nice level of spice and tasted fresh and well seasoned. I especially loved the chickpeas and the cabbage with carrots and potatoes, and the spinach balanced everything out perfectly. This food stall is in the middle of the WEDI Downtown Bazaar at 617 Main Street, and it's full service: Dine-in, take out, and delivery via apps. We ordered the combo plate with meat for $19.99, and it was just the right amount of food for two. Each bite was heavenly! The stewed greens had a kick to them; the doro wat (chicken in onion sauce) was richly caramelized; the lentils cooked perfectly. There are many booths and tables nearby for gatherings of all sizes. Food was okay. They took the order wrong. By the time the food was served the injera was already cold, it wasn't soft and fluffy. I ordered the combination platter, the food was a mixed bag: the cubed beef was salty! Best part of the platter was the cabbage, potatoes and carrots, fork tender and seasoned just right. Am surprised that it's been so long since i was last here; maybe i just didn't review it? anyway, ordered the misir wot (see description below). Unfortunately, it was way too spicy hot for me to eat but a bit of it, with the injera bread as a chaser, so i took most of it home. had to cut it with plain greek yogurt + a bit of sugar, and then it was fine. the green veggie, spinach, was really nicely seasoned, and the small green salad was just that. I sat outside b/c the music is so loud since the transformation to the international house. am not keen on all the lanterns, either; they seem to be a decorating attempt that missed the mark. Dining at Abyssinia in the downtown Buffalo food hall felt like a warm hug from family--truly comfort food at its best. The flavors transported me back to the nostalgia of home-cooked meals, and I loved that they made my dish spicier upon request. Chicken tibs were solid. The sauce is what makes the dish!! This is some serious comfort food. Cooked by hand to order one customer at a time and well worth every bit of the 10-15 minute wait. We order two dinners and a half dozen vegetable samosas. One of the Vegetable Combination dinner and one Chicken Gefuma dinner. The veggies were served inside a large piece of soft fluffy bread/pancake that was closed over the food like an envelope. There were beets, a carrot and cabbage mix, chick peas, spinach, salad and lentils all in individual scoops inside this pancake. As beautiful to look at as to eat and they never got mixed up. Each one was absolutely delicious. The pancake was smooth on the outside and had bubble holes on the inside where the food was. Just the same as when you pour pancake batter and watch till right before you want to flip it, there are holes all through it and you know it's time to flip it, except they don't flip it because it's done. And it's a really large piece of bread/pancake about twice the size of a dinner plate. The chicken was flavorful with a hint of spiciness. A generous portion of seasoned chicken onions tomatoes and peppers on egg noodles with salad and cabbage, carrots and potatoes too. The samosas were smaller and tightly wrapped and served with spicy brown sauce that looked like mustard but wasn't! The staff was remarkable!!! Cheerful and hardworking. Everything was correct and it was clear they had a loyal following because there were lots of people picking up meals or waiting for their meals to eat right there. This was definitely a restaurant worth going and getting dinner especially when you miss that feeling of being loved with home cooking. read more

We stopped by the West Side Bazaar for lunch last Saturday and to pick up a few samples from a Yelp Elite event. We tried the Gomen, Kik Alicha and Misirwot with rice and sambusas. The white rice was very fragrant, the gomen is a spinach dish and had a nice flavor. The Misirwot was a serving of delicious red lentils with berbere seasonings and the Kik Alicha is made up of yellow split peas and tasted similar to a split pea soup but a little sweeter and spicier I'd say. I believe they use tumeric in it as well. The sambusas had a light dough and the filling was hearty and spicy. I's definitely go back because I thoroughly enjoyed the meal! read more

I go to Abyssinia semi-regularly and will continue to. As the only Ethiopian option in Buffalo I'm happy to have it. The new location in the Expo building downtown is much nicer than the filthy West Side Bazaar. But every time I eat here I have the same thought: This is the worst Ethiopian food I've ever had. The menu is lacking, it's overpriced, it takes forever for the dude to scoop the curries onto the injera (sometimes he'll just leave a half compiled dish on the counter for ten minutes while he rings up other orders), and some of the dishes really lack flavor. Like Korean, Vietnamese and Indian food in this city -- I'm happy to have the options but it's the worst I've ever had. I'll keep going back wishing it was better. read more

I ordered the samosa's and the yelp event dish which is Goman, Kikalicha and Mesirwot on rice. The samples of the dishes were good not spicy at all but a little on the bland side of things. It was mostly a white rice with yellow split peas and red lentils with spinach. The samosa's were very good I had three of them at a $1 a piece the deep fried pillows were crispy and hot. I am not sure what they were filled with one was maybe s garbanzo bean the other two were meat filled. They came with a dipping sauce that was delicious and spicy .The sauce was so good I added it to my rice dish and it kicked it up to a heat level I enjoyed. read more

Literally some of the best food I have ever tasted. I get the Abyssinia combo every time and it NEVER disappoints! The chicken is so flavorful, tender, and it leaves you wanting more!!! The lentils are cooked to perfection with no remnant of an earthy gritty taste. I just wish I could make food like this at home!! West Side Bizarre is a fantastic place to eat in Buffalo and with so many different options to choose from it can be a little overwhelming. One of the fantastic places inside is Abyssinia Ethiopian Cuisine! I came here in the early afternoon and like usual the place was pretty busy. After staring at the menu for way too long I finally settled on ordering (I apologize for not knowing the proper name) the chicken dish that was served with curry potatoes, veggies, and I believe honey noodles? It was noodles cooked in something, again, my bad for being an idiot. When the food was finished and finally consumed, it was absolutely fantastic! The chicken itself was very flavourful and delicious, the curry potatoes were unique, but tasted very very good, and the noodles were tasty as well. Everything on my plate tasted excellent together and I can't help but wonder what I missed out on not ordering a couple more dishes! Overall, you owe it to yourself to come to the West Side Bizarre and give this Ethiopian place a shot. Less than a mile away, there are mediocre bars, overpriced trendy food spots that have 200, 500, 1,000 reviews. And here is Abyssinia, with its 10 reviews, plugging away, providing free *amazing* food at Yelp Without Borders to 250 or more people, many from Elmwood Village, many from the suburbs. And still, only 10 reviews. It would be really great if everyone that has ever tried Abyssinia could give it a review, and help to put it on the map. It should be on the map. It's some of the best Ethiopian food I've ever had, and I happen to love Ethiopian food. What to get: Abyssinia Combo with rice instead of injera. What else: Some of the best Ethiopian food you'll ever have, and made by one of the loveliest ladies you could meet. And what else: Please write a review of it, because they deserve it, and nobody else seems to prioritize it because, omg, we could review "716" or "Anchor Bar" instead. Some were veggie, some were beef, some were chicken, some were who knows what, but they all had one very obvious thing in common. They were delicious! Everything was incredible, it wasn't just the best Ethiopian food I've ever had, no, it was some of the best food I've ever had, period. I was so impressed that I raved about it to people for days, and whereas I usually eat all of my own leftovers, my lunch partner who usually never takes leftovers, demanded on taking the leftovers because they were just so irresistible. They also do all their dishes with rice if you prefer, and that is what I always get now because their rice is absolutely amazing! I think everything tastes even better with the rice! Did you know that in Rochester, there is an unrelated, more expensive restaurant with lovely decor called Abyssinia, which will cost you twice as much, but is equally delicious? Try that one too! But they have 71 reviews despite being more suburban. And our Abyssinia in Buffalo has 10. This is a problem. Let's fix it, WNY! I'm embarrassed to say that Abyssinia is actually the name by which the Brits referred to Ethiopia, when they colonized it. We were asses, that's for sure. Not the only ones though, not by a long shot. A lot of horrors in the past... and the present. But that's for another day. Hopefully not so much in the future. I try to be optimistic about these things. I think it comes from the word "Abyss" in reference to the Sahara Desert being the Abyss by the way. Makes sense. What a beautiful Abyss. I wonder what made these people decide to run Abyssness. It must be hard. I wish they got the credit they deserved. Maybe the Yelp Without Borders exposure... I'm hoping. Abyssinia has become my family's go-to takeout during these COVID times. We usually order ahead online and then go to pickup ourselves. The Bazaar building is not open to the public now, but someone will come to the door, ask us our name and which place we ordered from, and then will hand us our order when it's ready. Easy peasy. We always get the vegetarian combo. It's a nice variety of textures, some mild, some a little spicy, and 100% delicious. They provide a good amount of injera, which is a great thing for us because apparently my toddler LOVES injera. If Abyssinia were to have extra injera as an add-on item, we'd probably get it, but so far we're able to appease our son (and satisfy ourselves) with what we get. Lately, we've also tried some of the single dish vegetarian items. Even for these dishes, Abyssinia includes a little bit of green salad, and a little bit of another vegetarian dish, so you still get some variety, even though you didn't order the combo. For example, we ordered the yellow split peas, and got injera, salad, and a little bit of the cooked spinach entree. So if you're worried about something being a little too monotonous, don't worry. I miss being able to go into the Bazaar, but I'm glad that takeout is still an option for Abyssinia and many of the other Bazaar eateries. read more

There are so many gems around Buffalo that it's sometimes hard to keep track of them all. Lucky for you and me, The West Side Bazaar houses like five of them (this place is located inside it) and Abyssinia offers some quality no-frills tasty Ethiopian cuisine. If you've never been here, you need to understand that The West Side Bazaar is like a mecca of culturally diverse food housed in a food-court type atmosphere. There's probably about 10 tables and seating for parties of 2 and a few tables for parties of 4 or more. Don't come here expecting a restaurant-like atmosphere, but if you want some quality authentic food from people who may not speak very good English (but damn well know how to make tasty food!), this is the place for you. Choose from Ethiopian, Thai, Puerto Rican and Burmese rolls. I came here for lunch with a friend who was just about to leave Buffalo for California and this was his first experience with Ethiopian food. Those who've tried Ethiopian before know that you don't need any utensils as the eating is done with your hands. Just take the injera it's served on, tear off a piece and scoop up the delicious flavors! He ordered the beef dish, while I ordered the kale & potatoes vegetarian. Both were served with a simple salad with some Italian dressing (not house made). The flavors of both dishes were fantastic. The kale had a salty and tangy spice to it, while the potatoes were a little spicy and full of flavor. His beef dish had some heat to it and melted in your mouth. They were a joy to eat, especially with your hands. We had so much fun! The food was pre-made, I assume, the morning of so they just scoop it up for you in some tasty injera. You can taste it's been marinating in its flavors for a while, so this is actually a good thing and I assume most Ethiopian restaurants do this (here, it's just apparent because you can see the kitchen). We also asked for some tap water and Ethiopian coffee, which was served in a small cup with sugar and cream. Expect only about 6 ounces of coffee, but it's deliciously brewed and very smooth. The food here is great. Has been ever since they opened. The service, though, wow. I went in yesterday for lunch with three friends. We all paid by card, and all found our totals raised from $15-17 to $20 at the end of the night. I tipped on my card, so it's not like they were forcibly adding a tip or something -- just flat-out fraudulently inflating the charge. They also took a really, really long time to get our food, a serious problem since three of us were on break from work. But the fraudulent charges are the worst. I have a standing lunch date every Tuesday - usually that means pho or ramen, but it's 85 degrees today in Buffalo and I already have a sunburn. Abyssinia Ethiopian to the rescue! This small business inside the West Side Bazaar makes light, tasty food in huge portions. Injera, the chewy, spongey, vaguely crêpe-like Ethiopian staple carb, is at the center of most of the dishes on the menu here. Rip off the edges and use it to pick up your food. Always indecisive, I ordered the vegetable combo dish which includes a bit of every veggie on the menu. The hot dishes seem to be prepared in advance and simmered all day, making them super flavorful. All are worth trying, but my favorites were the lentils and the collard greens. Abyssinia Ethiopian is a bit more expensive than the other eateries inside the West Side Bazaar, but makes up for it in the sheer enormity of the entrées - if you're not starving, they're easily shared. I'd love to see drinks added to the menu to round out the experience, but it's easy enough to go across the room for a lhassi or some bubble tea. I'll be back soon to try the sambusas! read more
