    Nice outdoor seating

Above and Beyond This is my second review of Abyssinia. They were closed for 7 months and have reopened under new leadership and chef. Same awesome food. Same very friendly attitude. I was talking with owner cook. He reopened this restaurant due to his love of his culture and his love of cooking. I told him I too enjoy cooking. To my surprise he gifted me enough of their homemade berbere spice mix the special spiced butter that he called Ethiopian gold and instructions how to make doro wat. Doro Wat is often referred to as the national dish of Ethiopia. I made it and the photo of my effort is below. It was super tasty. I served over rice as I can't make injera. This is going above and beyond and gave an experience I won't forget. Thank you and please check them out.

Our two entrees (Doro Wot and the salmon ribs I believe) are served on injera and with the accompanying veggie sides

The place is casual with plenty of seats and there was outdoor seating when we went in the summer time. The server was very helpful in guiding us with what everything was, as this was our first time, and we decided on the doro wot (chicken) and salmon tibs. All I can say was flavor explosion. Everything, including the veggie sides, we're so flavorful and accompanied our entrees so well. The soft injera bread, that it's served on and alongside, is a sourdough flat bread so it is a little sour, which was delicious but was a little overpowering toward the end of the meal (might just have been because I wasn't used to it). Wow, what a wonderful experience and great introduction to Ethiopian cuisine. The restaurant was closed for a bit but glad they're back open. I've been craving Ethiopian ever since, not sure there's a cuisine I've tried so far that compares.

Sometimes it's about the food, and sometimes it's about the entire experience. At Abyssinian, it was definitely the entire experience, as the owner was a really interesting and welcoming person with whom to interact. For drinks, we first asked about Tej, and we were told they had probably just enough for 3 glasses. As we were 6, we instead opted for wine, and we ordered reasonably priced bottles of both red and white wines. We followed this with appetizers. The sambusas may have been my favorite part of the entire meal, they had a nice kick to them. So did the Ayib Be Gomen, which happened to be served with a fork. This is the first Ethiopian restaurant at which we ever received utensils instead of injera, but that was fine. At Abyssinian, you order your own plate of food, and your entree comes out with typically 3 sides. For ours, we all received potatoes, lentils, and cabbage. We inquired about collards and were told they were not part of the platters, but the owner was nice enough to give us a plate of collards to go with our meal. No forks now, everyone got their own plate of injera. The injera on my platter was a bit dry and crisp around the edges, possibly slightly older or possibly under a heat lamp briefly. We had some people in our group who were not good with spicy food, so we asked for the meals to be only mildly spicy. The spiciness of the meal was perfect for the request, though I would have been equally content having it be spicier. One of the things I like about Ethiopian restaurants is that sometimes you're almost family within minutes of sitting down. I definitely got that feeling here.

Small Ethiopian spot with a very friendly owner and a bunch of different authentic dishes I came for dinner with my friend and we split both the salmon dish and the veggie sampler. Everything that we tried was delicious, including the sourdough bread used to mop up all our of different entrees. 9

    Vegetarian Sambusa (vegan)

I came here with a friend because I was craving Ethiopian food and my friend requested something with *flavor* (emphasis on flavor). The owner made us feel like we were entering his home, sitting with us and chatting like we were old friends while we were choosing what to order. It was so refreshing to have that level of attention and I can see why this place is so highly rated. All the vegetarian meals are vegan, so do not worry! Everything is fresh and the injera is amazing, and the stand outs are the Denish Wot, Yemeser Wot and Ater Kik. Everything was well seasoned though, and the injera was perfectly sour without being overwhelming. The Sambusa were also tasty, perfectly flaky even after sitting through our meal and the accompanying sauce was a perfect complement. They are also allergy friendly so be confident that if you tell them of any that you may have that you will be taken care of. All things told, it was an affordable meal, with enough for leftovers, and I would make the trip to come here from New Haven again. As the owner told us, the owners of Lalibela come here to eat too, so you know its good! I highly recommend.

We went here for a Veterans Day celebration for my husband. This was a cuisine we had wanted to try for a long time and came across Abyssinia on Yelp and had to try it. The service and food were amazing! The owner came to our table multiple times to check in and see how we were liking the food, as well as tell us about the way certain food were prepared. I highly recommend going here for an authentic Ethiopian food experience!

Make sure you visit this wonderful restaurant! Our kids had never had Ethiopian food before and wanted to try it (mostly because they heard they could eat without utensils). The owner was so kind with his recommendations and took into account what our kids said they liked. The service was really attentive. The food was fantastic! The injera is delicious and we especially loved the sliced beef and the yellow lentils. Try the hummus; my 8 year old was scraping the plate. We wish them all the best as they reopen, they deserve all the success! Don't miss out.

Ask the Community - Abyssinian Ethiopian Restaurant

Does anyone know if this place has outdoor dining?

Yes there is a couple tables outside.

Are they still open for takeout during COVID? We ate there back when it was in Hartford and would love to support them again but can't get their website to work or find any info. Nothing new posted on yelp or their Facebook page since February 😕

Last I heard the owner was trying to re-open either a week or a month ago, but no update ever since.

Probably one of the coolest ice cream experiences that I've had. For those who don't know, Nitro Cream & Crumbz makes there ice cream for you on the spot using Liquid Nitrogen blenders. It essentially freezes the mix on the spot. A cool process that yields much creamier ice cream (that I read and in person confirmed). This isn't just your typical ice cream scoop and plop experience. During the experience, cool smoke from the liquid nitrogen fills the area as they stir your selected ice cream flavor. The process of the employees adding the ingredients is done all within your line of sight for a full investment into your delicious treat. The flavors are FUN and the end result is visually appealing to eat. I myself got the HOLY CANNOLI which had Riccota vanilla ice cream, crushed cannoli shell, dark chocolate and white chocolate chips wrapped in a spongy bubble waffle. It was delicious and creamy (as you hope from doing your homework on Liquid Nitrogen ice cream ). The staff were extremely friendly, bubbly even and helped explain popular options for a first time Nitro ice cream eater. Best part of this whole thing is having so many other great flavors left to try on my next trip. Highly recommend and prices are VERY reasonable (some might argue a little low for the experience you get).

It's located near Main Street in downtown Middletown. The shop is cute and service was exceptional. CRB sells desserts, baked goods, bread and made to order cakes. Although I posted a pic of 3 year old Lila's birthday cake, it was not my cake and I wasn't invited to the party. Lila apparently didn't think I was cool enough. Maybe next year. Very cool cake though. I would want one of my friends or family members to have a cake that cute. I also did not have one of the Super Bowl team color cake push pops. I tried to order one, but they were only displayed for pre-sale. They looked great though. We did order a turtle brownie, a salted caramel bar, a blueberry muffin, a churro bar and a loaf of rye bread. Our family split a number of these things. I thought the brownie, caramel bar and blue berry muffin were all terrific. The bread and churro bar didn't really connect for me. The bread was not what I would call a traditional rye. It was denser and seemed a touch pumpernickelly in flavor. CRB had other breads that looked good though. The churro bar didn't remind me enough of a churro to warrant the name and there was a dense cheesecake type layer that needed more of an identity. Overall, there was more great, than not great though. I would definitely recommend Cake Batter & Roll if you're in Middletown. They have some tasty desserts and they can make gorgeous stuff. I was excited when I saw Tswirl Crepe open as the South End of Main Street lacks much of a dessert scene. Tswirl Crepe offers Japanese crepes with their crepes made out of rice flour batter. First thing I noticed was their sign saying most of the sweets are handmade, customized, and one-of-a-kind and you can really tell. Let's get into the drinks because that's what brought me in I tried the Singapore rose with kiwi boba super delicate, floral, and lightly sweet. It's one of those drinks that feels refreshing but still has flavor. The kiwi boba gave it that little pop of tangy kick that made it even better. I also tried the dragon fruit tea with passionfruit boba; this one was giving tropical vibes all the way Light, slightly sweet, and really smooth. The passionfruit boba actually enhanced the tea instead of overpowering it, which I loved. And can we talk about the options here?!
