What a phenomenal find. The whole place is fitted to the standard of a small family owned restaurant - hand-drawn pictures of scenery on the walls and differing sets of chairs and tables to match. As soon as you enter, it's clear the small number of staff are invested in the quality of your experience. The cooks are visible from the front door and every server is right up front. I came here with my partner and we ordered the banana pancakes, the Sarah's sandwich, a side of oatmeal with cinnamon, two coffees, and the special scramble with fresh basil and tomato. All priced at a level that gives any family from any background the chance to try some truly great food on the weekend. When we asked for syrup for the pancakes, they got us real maple syrup in a glass no extra charge. If I am ever in the area again, I will insist in coming back just for the genuinely good experience to be had from a place that invests in all the right things to make the customers feel at home and welcomed. First-time visitors here on a recommendation while passing through Portland. Sarah's has a nice diner atmosphere in what looks like an expanded space with more seating than the previous restaurant. The location is great and the place has that cozy, local feel you'd expect from a Main Street spot. Food: The clam chowder was very good - well-seasoned and not too thick, which I appreciated. My half chicken salad sandwich was also solid. Both items were tasty and well-prepared, so no complaints on food quality. Service: This is where things fell short. Despite only having 2 other parties in the restaurant on a Wednesday morning, our server seemed to be rushing us through the meal. It felt unnecessarily hurried for such a quiet time, which detracted from what should have been a relaxed breakfast experience. Other notes: They only have canned beverages - no fountain drinks, which was a bit surprising for a diner-style restaurant. Bottom line: The food was good but nothing exceptional, and the rushed service left us feeling like we wouldn't necessarily seek this place out again. For Portland locals, this might be a decent neighborhood spot, but as visitors, we didn't get that "must return" feeling. I'm always surprised to find a new-to-me 4.5 Star rating restaurant with over 100 reviews within 20 minutes of my home, but Sarah's on Main in Portland is one. I'm not one to call a place a Hidden Gem, but I know about 50 people who would be chomping at the bit to call Sarah's a Hidden Gem. I've got to take the L on this one though. A bunch of people knew about Sarah's. I didn't. And it's a fantastic and cool breakfast spot. Sarah's is a rare restaurant that's both on a Main Street and part of a residential neighborhood at the same time. It's seems like a cool old house with woods floors, and dining rooms in three separate rooms of that old house. Here's a fact about me. I sometimes flake out when I order. I think I know what I want, but I'm not 100 percent sure, and I just change it up. I was going to order two sunny side up eggs with corned beef hash, home fries and toast, but when I ordered, I suddenly decided on the Bacon and Corned Beef Hash Scrambler. I saw pics of the corned beef hash, which looked phenomenal. The scrambler, which was very good btw, was less corned beef hash and more corned beef. The corned beef was obviously home made and terrific, but mixed with the bacon, it was probably more salty meat than I was looking for. The components were all good though. The home fries were first rate. And the sour dough toast was good. My son loved his black bean wrap and impossibly two dimensional fries. I've never seen fries this style of fry btw. They looked cool and were good. This was a first time order for my son. The menu inspired him I guess. Service was very efficient and friendly. I'll be back to try the corned beef hash, omelettes, pancakes and waffles. That's right. Sarah's has skyrocketed towards the top of my preferred weekend breakfast spots. This little diner on Main Street in Portland, CT was a pleasant surprise. Small place with several small dining areas so it gives it a homey feel. Small menu but food was very good. On Main Street in Portland is a kind of ramshackle house which is where Sarah's on Main is. On street parking seemed to be what's available (no problem finding a space). There are 3 rooms inside where they serve breakfast & lunch. The floors are a bit uneven, but that just lends itself to the charm of the restaurant. There is a specials board with daily hash, soups, etc. Service was fine - we got our coffee soon after sitting. However, it took a while for the food to arrive, even though it wasn't crowded. I had the brioche French toast (really good) - a short stack was quite filling for me. The omelette my husband had was very good too. A kitchen far from home Were in the area and looked for the best breakfast spot around. This one was highly rated, so we came to this restaurant to try. We found a spot to sit in this smaller location. Servers were present but busy, so it took some time to get someone's attention. Opted for their special waffle: a Belgian waffle with chocolate mousse, coconut cream, and almond slivers. Also got a single piece of French toast to try. Girlfriend got the hash special, with liguica, poblanos, and corn. Either done corn beef hash to try. Good took a long while to get to us, and when we eventually got food what we got was lackluster. The highlights: the waffle had a good flavor and the corned beef hash was slightly over seasoned. But I don't mind salty, so I appreciate the heavy hand on the seasoning. The rest fell flat. The waffle toppings were pretty much pudding mixes spooned onto a waffle. The coconut cream had no sweetness and no coconut flavor, the special hash was lacking any flavor beyond potato and corn, which was a shame. The biggest crime was the French toast. It was made with spite, and hit every wrong note a French toast could hit. Not soaked, no cinnamon, no sugar in the batter, the piece was an end piece so it was mis-cut. there was no syrup, no butter, and nothing offered. Nothing about the sad piece of French toast was salvageable, and I would be willing to discard this misstep if the rest of the meal wasn't as bad as what I got. What we got was from a kitchen that very much was done for the day, our meal was a flop in every sense of the word, and the end result reflects that. I suspect that they might be good, but our meal doesn't show that. Maybe our experience was abnormal? But I don't swing by this location often enough to make the attempt again. Wow. I wasn't sure based on it looking like a house with many rooms... but wow. The food was amazing. I started with typical delicious diner coffee and asked for the bacon and hash scramble. I've never had corn beef before but this was stellar. I wish it had a little bit more egg, but honestly, the bacon and the hash were so perfectly cooked and tender. The hashbrowns were just 10/10. They needed nothing extra. I added tobasco to my scramble for a bit of a kick but it didn't need it My husband got the southwest scramble and ate it quickly. The veggies were fresh and crisp. He loved the cinnamon raisin toast. We split a pumpkin pancake with vanilla glaze. They were huge, moist and flavorful. All of the flavors were strong and not muddled. It was perfect. Ladies Brunch A group of us meet monthly for brunch and have chosen Sarah's On Main the last two times. Our reasons for returning are: 1. Cosy and welcoming feeling with unique artwork on the walls of the "house". 2. Tables big enough to accommodate 6-8 of us. ( we call in advance) 3. Home-cooked food with a unique twist. 4. The bread selection included a true sourdough and a gluten-free option (gf + $2). We had Farmers Market omelet which was "the best veggie omelet I've ever had" according to my dad. The eggs were not runny inside the veggies but rather cooked and wrapped around the seasoned fresh vegetable assortment with provolone! I had a bite and yeh, the veggies were really delicious! Unfortunately not worth the 30 minute drive we made. Came here as one of my coworkers recommended it and decided to try it out. It is a small little spot that seemed to be a town favorite. They had some specials of the day and I opted for the pistachio french toast. It left much to be desired. I liked that they used brioche bread but other than pistachios on top I didn't taste anything different. There was no flavor at all. I thought the iced coffee might save the meal but unfortunately it couldn't. I tried a few sips and realized that there was so many coffee grounds making it undrinkable. The server was nice and that is the only positive I could find. I did end up getting sick later in the day but I don't know if I can credit it to the food. read more

A small blue house that has a good amount of seating inside, it wasn't too busy on a Thursday morning. Prices can't be beat! Go ahead and order your sweet and savory entrees to get some of both, it won't hurt your wallet too much. Conversely, I'm sure you could feed yourself for under $10 as well. The interior isn't super glamorous or anything, more of a homey and classic diner kind of feel. My friend and I split an order the french toast, which we ordered with a mixed berry topping, and each got a breakfast platter that came with eggs, bacon, toast, and homefries. It was all very good, I thought that the eggs were done really well (even though we just got them scrambled, but you'd be surprised I've had some bad scrambled eggs before), and the french toast was PLENTY - if you're sharing you could probably go with a short stack and be fine.
