We hired Dave to do an inspection of the central air (heat pump) prior to moving in after noting on a walk-through that it did not appear to be working correctly. As described in my original Yelp review, our first impression was good. After moving in, however, my spouse and I began seeing electric bills hit ~ $1,000 per month in the summer months, which we paid for three years straight! (For those that don't know, heat pumps are so efficient that owning one will qualify ratepayers for a discounted tier with SoCal Edison so paying THIS much was evidence of something gone terribly wrong.) Dave didn't really have an explanation --and Edison refused to do an energy audit -- so I turned to Google where I learned that the heat strips in our heat pump might be wired improperly causing them to run year-around. Dave had come over on a handful of times by this point (suggested we change our thermostat) but nothing was officially diagnosed until I insisted on redoing the rewiring. Dave and his assistant did a good job on that work but I wish he would have checked the heat strips himself so that I (a non-expert) was not left to debate whether my hunch was "right" in the absence of a pro diagnosis. A similar situation arose with regard to a blown transformer. When the winter weather reached its coldest (snow on ground), we would wake up to a cold house and no sign of life from our heat pump. Dave came out and replaced a transformer three different years. On the third time I asked what we should do if it happens again the next winter because it had become an annual event. Dave shrugged his shoulders. Once again I got to work on Google, which led to the possibility that we had a bad defrost control board. For 1/3 of the price of a call to have a transformer replaced, we fixed this problem ourselves. (Score one for another correct hunch!) Another source of high electric bills is the fact that one of our ducts doesn't do the job for the room to which it is attached, prompting us to install a through-the-wall heat/cooling unit four years ago. On hot days, the space is only about 10 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. In asking for a solution to the problem, Dave initially suggested we check if there was a damper installed that might account for the low air flow. Since none was installed we called and scheduled for an inspection to get to the bottom of what was wrong with the duct. Early this summer, Dave came out and spent an hour chatting with us (no charge that time) but was unable to physically check the duct in our attic. Due to the fact that he was unwilling to go in the attic on that visit, we spoke instead about a mini split. My spouse proposed doing ~95% of the install, including the electrical, with the sole exception of the refrigerant line hookups. For final hookups (under 2hrs of time) Dave quoted $1,600 (not including the cost of a mini spit). Upon further consideration, we realized that by the time we bought the mini split and paid Dave for 1-2 hours of his time it would be right up there with the cost of troubleshooting the poorly performing air duct. So we called and scheduled for Dave to come back a second time. Per the estimate, a single duct and register will now cost roughly as much as replacing every duct in the house in 2017. Of course, inflation has driven the cost of everything up and so some of this is simply unavoidable. At issue is that for having done this single-duct inspection we also don't know if the rest of the house will continue to receive enough airflow once a percentage is redirected from the existing 9" ductwork to a new 12" duct to cool/heat this ~500 Sq. ft. space. (There was no mention of balancing the system as part of the job.) By this time, Dave and his assistants were ready to leave for another job for which just under an hour of time and an estimate set us back $300. Feeling confused, we called another company thinking maybe we should have a second opinion (would hate to pay for a larger duct only to find our heat pump isn't up to the task of an added ~500 Sq. ft). The company we called (advertises on KFI) happens to operate too far out of the area to service here. But they did tell us that if we were in their service area the duct inspection would have been FREE -- it would be the actual job that would have been charged upon writing up an estimate. Dave, who is local to our area, has been a big help when we have found ourselves in a bind. However, between DIY Google searching to troubleshoot serious, recurrent problems such as our astronomical electric bills, pricing that varies between $300 to $1,600 for an hour-long call and service calls we have had to make more than once for the same issue, we are frustrated to find ourselves years later dealing with problems we have been trying to nail down since Day One as first-time homeowners. Although our strong preference is to support local, independent businesses, the take-home lesson is this: Shop around. read more

I thought I was coming back on here to update a review but I cannot believe I hadn't given them a review yet. Our building is one of those old ones in LA that were converted to condos so we are a residential building with commercial problems. A lot of places wouldn't touch our place but AC Dave is truly our go-to. They've replaced our fan units, replaced and repaired old and corroded pipes (building is old remember?), taught us to care for our system and most importantly, works with the water chiller system that our building has. I had the worst experience with this company! They did not show up when they said and did not call me about it, what I understand in an emergency. They finally showed up, the two technicians were very polite and helpful. The bill was much higher than I thought, but it was explained. I got a call a day afterwards from a very rude person telling me I have to pay more because the bill was incorrect. I explained to her that it was explained to me that this was the bill. I asked to talk to the owner. Today's later I get a call from the same rude person telling me that she will charge my credit card and I have to pay more money. I told her, I had to wait the whole day and payed much more then first explained. The person pretty much said to me, that I was lying and after she will charge my credit card I should look at craigslist for a different air condition company. The saddest thing on this whole story is, that whatever they did, did not work since my air condition is still not cooling like it should. Great installation of a mini-split AC /heater at a reasonable price. Regarding this we were happy. I requested a thorough inspection and maintenance of our AC/heater and was left unsure if it was properly done. Dave seems like a good guy, and seems knowledgeable, but his technicians are the ones doing the inspection/maintenance. I can ask him to make sure to do this and that, but the technicians will do what they usually do or want to do. All I know is, one of the things I requested was to vacuum both condensers. They said the condenser on the second floor was clean, but when I went up to look they had not vacuumed it, and Dave had to tell them to do so, just as they were preparing to leave already. Anyway, I guess we would still go with AC Dave if we had to do it over again. read more

I had an issue with one of my a/c units not blowing cold air. I jumped on yelp and had the top a/c company in my area come out. After about 10 minutes of "troubleshooting", the tech told me that I needed a new unit and gave me a quote for about $5,000. I felt something was wrong with his diagnosis since my unit was about 10 years old so I called the next top rated company. They told me something completely different saying that it wasn't my unit, but a restriction in the refrigerant line. He said they would have to replace my lines and quoted me $6,000 to do this. At this point I was lost and didn't know who to believe or what to do. I ended up calling a total of 5 different companies - 2 of them saying it was the unit, 2 of them saying it was a restriction in the line and 1 wasn't sure. Keep in mind that every company charged me atleast $99 to come out so I was about $500 in the hole and I was still at square 1! I ended up turning to my next door app and I received a recommendation for A/C Dave. At this point I was desperate and said what the heck so I gave him a call. I'm so happy I did. Dave came out and found the real problem within 20 minutes. It was a plugged up refrigerant filter. He replaced it and everything has been running great ever since. We noticed a foul smell coming from one of the vents in our HVAC system. We turned the system off and called AC Dave. Dave sent Justin and James to troubleshoot the problem. They quickly found a tear in one of our ducts--and the remains of a dead rodent. They cut open the duct, cleaned it and resealed it. We had heat again, about an hour after they arrived. Over the years I have had a variety of various services. AC Dave Heating & Air falls into the category of the best. He know what he is doing and performs with the finest quality anyone could ever expect. If I am clear about my needs he will do as much as possible to satisfy everything. I just had a ductless split installed (heater/AC). Not one problem. Due to the problems with real life he needed to adjust his schedule so he would be able to arrive when I was available and I also needed to take into account the fact this guy is good so it might be difficult for me to get him as quickly as I wanted. Before I call anyone else I would call AC Dave FIRST. I call and hope he hasn't gotten so busy that I would need to wait. Never had to wait. He has done everything within he power to arrive when he said or he will send one of his employees. Dave only has working for him employees that do the job as though Dave was there personally. I had this experience when Dave was on a job and he sent a worker.. the worker was fully qualified and thoroughly briefed as to what was discussed by Dave and myself. Our water heater went out on Tuesday, we called AC Dave and he was kind enough to come out that day from his busy schedule and look at our water heater. Need less to say, Dave went and got us a new unit and came over on Wednesday to install it. Its so much nicer of a unit and works so much more effeciently. Would give 0 stars if I could. As their new neighbor I recently called just asking to be shown how to light a pilot light which would take less then a minute of their time. Upon arrival was a random guy who said he was licensed and said he worked for ac Dave and was here because dave was stuck in traffic. The guy comes in lights it, smoke alarms are going off then starts messing with other things I didn't authorize him to touch. He then told me that the furnace was clogged with leaves and it was 400$ to have the fire box and vent pipe cleaned so he left. We then had another company come out and as the guy took one look at the furnace he said it was rusted and very unsafe to even light and replaced it. Thank god for this second company coming out because there was a fried dead squirrel stuffed in the vent pipe not leaves. Ac Daves worker left a terrible stench in my home then stuck me with a ridiculous 100$ bill for some Joe smo to come over and light a pilot light.
