I have been buying glasses here for ten years. I have always had great service. Recently I purchased a pair of prescription Oakley Flak Jacket sunglasses. I picked them up and the next day left for a 3 week vacation in Colorado. The glasses seemed a little blurry and all my previous Oakley s were always super clear. When I got back in town I went to talk to Nancy who sold me the glasses about the blurriness . Nancy was very nice, she checked the glasses and they check out to the prescription. Then Nancy offered to send the glasses back to Oakley for further evaluation. I agreed and a couple of days later I received a call from Nancy at Academy Optical. Oakley told her that they could not make those glasses in my prescription right because of my extreme astigmatism. Oakley said that they should have notified Academy Optical about that before making the glasses. Nancy then told me that Oakley would make me a new pair of glasses in a compatible frame of my choice. I agreed and few days later came back to Academy Optical and Nancy had already picked out the compatible frames and had them ready to try on! Nancy even suggested the frame that I liked the best (Crosslinks). Nancy sent them off to be made and a few days later I picked up my glasses and they are EXCELLENT! Nancy followed up a few days later with a phone call to see how I liked the glasses, perfect I said. I really appreciate the service that I received at Academy Optical. Diane and Nancy have always taken very good care of me over the years, all 20 of them. They have an excellent selection of funky, artistic frames. Every pair of glasses they painstakingly went through for me to find the perfect fit for my face and for my needs. Also, over the 20 years, I bought 4 pairs of glasses. They have quality that lasts. One pair broke at the hinge cracking the arm. They ordered me a new arm from France taking only a week or so for the part to arrive. They fixed it for a reasonable price. I am a musician and don't have a huge budget for glasses; however, I will pay extra for good service, if the establishment is family owned, and if they stand behind their products. I had a very pleasant experience at this location. When I couldn't find the frames I wanted at Nordstrom, I took a look in here. It was between some Chanel frames or Tom Ford frames. I felt the woman helping me was honest with me because she told me the Tom Ford frames looked better on me even though they were cheaper than the Chanel. And that right there made me feel like they weren't just after my money. They suggested I get the process done to where my glasses won't have a glare but I declined since I was already spending so much money. I will however have to get it done eventually because the glare is kind of lame. Very happy with the staff. Thanks read more

This was my first time going to Academy Optical and I will definitely be coming back for future purchases! I had a new prescription from my optometrist and didn't quite care for the selection that she had. But when I went to Academy Optical I was helped out by a very sweet and funny woman (didn't catch her name - blonde) and she was SO helpful and gave me a great selection to choose from. She picked out at least 15 different styles to help me out and I knew that it wasn't all about the money with the choices she picked because they were all a full range of different prices and she was completely honest and told me when certain ones were a bit pricey. I did not feel forced to buy anything and the BEST part is I had no idea that they made the lenses right at their store! Normally optometrists take 2-3 weeks or wait for insurance to kick in - etc. but I got it within the SAME day! I am so excited about my purchase and discovered a new brand of eyeglasses (Matsuda) that I absolutely love! I don't know about the other glasses that other people are complaining were overpriced, but I did some research on the glasses I purchased and while they are on the pricier side, they were in the same exact price range as everywhere else I saw online. Additionally, once I got my glasses they added in two adorable cleaning cloths with a cute pattern and cleaning solution. I don't get that at my optometrist! The guy that made my lenses also told me if I have any problems to come back and they will gladly fix the lenses or glasses if they don't seem right. So far, so good! I just had an overall great experience. Great customer service. Great product. I see a lot of the other Yelp reviewers are negative, but perhaps they improved because I just had the best experience yet and they definitely gained a new customer! :) read more

I have been wearing glasses since I was 18, I bought my first pair from Academy and then proceeded to get the next 10 as well! It really is a great store, the girls and guys are very helpful and they always have something new and exciting. I have placed numerous special orders with them and have never been disappointed, yes sometimes one does have to be patient, but that's because the frames are literally coming across several continents and an ocean, so come on people, if you want unique special eye-wear of course there will be a wait! Try walking into Chanel, Prada or even LV on Rodeo and having a custom fitted accessory that not only looks incredible but actually corrects a medical condition perfectly within 24 hours... It wont happen, and in fact the store will probably think you are out of your bloody mind! Quality and craftsmanship are worth going the extra mile for in this day and age. Therefore if you are comparing the items found in Academy to those found in Costco and are complaining about the fact that you have to wait a few days for your glasses to be molded and the lenses etched and ground by hand, then you honestly have no business commenting let a lone even walking into the store. Don't walk into a Mercedes dealership and expect to walk out for the cost of a Kia, you get what you pay for. Solid and fashionably unique products, quality craftsmanship, and stellar customer service can all be found at this store, and if you don't believe me then go in and check it out for yourself, I promise you wont be disappointed. Rip-off artists. My wife spent $2400.00 for three pairs of glasses with prescriptions. When she ordered, they tried to overcharge her for every possible tweak. Their prices are outrageous. For example, the charged her to tint polarized sunglasses, which we later found out from an opthamoligist are already tinted! When my wife picked up her first pair of reading glasses, she could not see properly through them. She took the glasses to an ophthalmologist who tested her lenses. The doctor said the lenses were the cheapest, thickest plastic lens you could use. When my wife went back to Academy to ask for a full refund, she was told they did not give refunds. She finally got a refund for one pair of glasses and we are waiting to hear whether or not they will refund for the other two pair which we never picked up. I have already contacted my credit card company to dispute the charge. Buyer beware. Academy Optical is grossly overcharging, will overcharge you for every tweak, and are using the poorest quality plastic lenses. They are the "car dealers" of optical stores. read more

not surprised this place has OK reviews. i had seen these super nice pair of glasses online and noticed they sell them at this store. the oaks mall is a local mall and i had been meaning to go and go look at these supposed pair. i went in to just browse. i'd say i spent at least 5 minutes in the store and not one person greeted me. there were two employees, granted one was helping a customer, but the other lady was just standing behind the counter not doing anything. the sir working that was helping the customer was very nicely dressed and had an expensive purse. i put two and two together and came to the conclusion that these workers are discriminating (for a lack of a better term). i was dressed very casually, clearly not worthy of their service. a little disappointed especially since i really did consider buying that pair of eyeglasses. definitely never going back into that place. and i'll make sure any friend of mine does not walk into that store either. terrible customer service read more

save yourselves time and money....DO NOT USE this company for any eye/sunglasses repairs, or for that matter, purchase. they are ill-mannered, non-responsive, and over priced. there are plenty of alternatives out there so avoid academy optical, in the Oaks Mall, Thousand Oaks, CA. Their service cannot be called service on any level. i tried to get a pair of sunglasses repaired and got the run-around for 8 weeks, at which point i sought my money back (paid in advance for the repair-$87) and the return of my broken sunglasses. they declared they were the ONLY place that would repair Ray-Bans. When the refund (credit back) never made it to my account after a month, and their claim that there was nothing they could do, i made a claim against them through my own bank. now it's between the two banks to resolve. i have my money back. oh and by the way, i sent the glasses back to Luxottica in GA and in 2 weeks they were returned and repaired for $35. so do yourselves a favor.....go elsewhere! read more
