(This is going to be long.) I am embarrassed to admit that I have used them about 12 times in the last two years. From about the third time I was frustrated enough that I should have stopped, but I continued to schedule them out of the mere convenience and lack of other options. They really don't deserve my business and I should stop using them.
My husband and I bought a brand new "luxury" condo and moved in in January 2007. We wanted to keep it really nice and clean and decided to have it cleaned professionally to try to keep it like we got it and since we both work long work weeks. I looked into various options, but we weren't comfortable with the idea of a random cleaning lady that, while cheaper, would require us to give her a key and access to our home while we are at work. I'm just not down with having a random person in my home while I'm not there and having my key and the availability to make copies, etc. So I stumbled upon Access Maids online. The fact that they had a "nice" website, seemed professional, could schedule as needed and not commit to biweekly cleanings (I wasn't sure we needed that frequency or wanted to pay that much) could come on Saturdays while we were home sold me on trying them.
At that time, they charged flat fees based on size of the place. So my fee for our three bedroom/ 2 bath duplex was set at $135 for as needed cleanings, a little high but the convenience of the Saturday appointments outweighed it. Since then, they did away with the flat rates and the hourly charge has contributed heavily to my continuing distaste. As people have stated, you just never know how long it will take them, how many women will come, so your charge can fluctuate greatly.
I cannot imagine how anyone would feel comfortable having them clean when they are not home to monitor because you cannot trust them to say how long they really worked. We are always home when they come so I make note of the time they arrive and the time they leave, and 9 times out of 10 they try to miscalculate the time they were there. For example, if they arrive at 1 and leave at 2:45 they somehow try to tell me that they were there for 2.5 hours when I was there the whole time! I have also had issues where 3 maids arrive and 20 minutes later one goes out the door never to be seen again and they somehow try to charge me for 3 maids the whole time. Again, if they lie to my face when I am right there keeping track no one should trust them if you are not there watching. I have had to call and argue with Sergei several times to adjust the charges for the hours and number of staff that were actually worked. (I know, I should have stopped using them long ago.)
Now Sergei.... ay yayay. He has never done anything to throw me a bone when his staff lies about charges or for any other problems. I agree, very poor customer service. My husband got on the phone with him once and spoke very nicely but assertively of our disappointment with the inconsistency of the service, but nothing changed.
They are very inconsistent. The first ever time they came they did an excellent job and we were so happy. There were a few other times where they did an adequate job and some that were just terrible. I regularly go around after they leave to do the "touch ups", the things they missed or skipped, which infuriates my husband.
We have granite, stainless steel, marble baths... One of the reasons we hired out for cleaning was so that these things were cleaned properly to maintain their quality. I caught them using Soft Scrub on my marble shower and Windex on my granite countertops. They claim to bring their own supplies, but you never know what is in the bottles since they are refillable bottles and not the manufacturers bottling (except in the case of the Soft Scrub). I have come to believe they are mishandling most of my surfaces.
Something else that is extremely frustrating is that most of them speak little or no English, so it makes it very difficult to communicate with them. I would like to be able to ask what supplies they are using, give them a request, just to speak with them. But they nod and said "ok" and then you realize they didn't understand a word you said when they never do what you just asked them to do. As someone else said, they also never seem to do the "add-ons" or special requests. I asked the last three times for them to clean the inside of the oven and it never gets done. I don't think they read the special instructions since they don't understand English and Sergei clearly doesn't prep them as they arrive to a job with the instructions as he could in that case. (Or translate the service slip for them!)
I think I have just convinced myself to finally stop using Access Maids, regardless of the ease of scheduling. I'm embarrassed I have given them this much of my money for mediocre work and dishonest time charges. Don't let yourself be roped in!
