Choosing a new auto shop is a difficult task. I know very little about cars, and it seems like…read morealmost everything related to cars is very unfriendly to women, or maybe to people in general. So I looked on Yelp to find a place in the area that had good reviews. Pleasant Street Auto only had two reviews, but they also took the time to post their own description. And, I liked the range of photos (I'll admit that I was a bit charmed by the photo of someone spray-painting a dinosaur) and the notion that there would be a place to sit and do work, comfortably, not literally sitting outside on a curb as I've had to do on occasion in the past. I was not a great customer up front, I'll admit. I completely forgot our first appointment, and then I became lost on my way for the remedial appointment. Throughout, the staff was patient and professional with me. I can't say a word about the garage/work area because I never saw it, which felt a little odd, but I could certainly get used to it! I don't have the slightest idea what the machines and tools are for, anyway, and so I don't know that seeing and hearing mechanics work really enhances my experience. Instead, I left my car and keys and waited inside. The front desk manages repair work, body work, and also Hertz rentals. When I made my oil change appointment, I was a little worried that I might have a serious issue discovered, and I might therefore need to rent a car. If this had been necessary, I could have managed it all at one location. Convenient! The oil change didn't seem to take all that long. I should have timed it, but I didn't. I think the total wait - even though I was late for my appointment, was well under an hour. During that time, I tried to take advantage of the homey waiting area with a t.v. (though the cable was stutteringly-intermittent), WIFI that didn't seem to work at all, and computers with internet service that required someone to come in and fix it for it to work at all. The computers were kind of old, dodgy, and dirty, but I was able to do some work, which was great. For families, there are toys and books (for kids and adults) and an area for children to hang out and play. I can only imagine that, since the space is open and adjacent to the desk area, it's not much fun for staff when the space gets "active," but it's very nice an accommodating. Overall, this is a huge leap over sitting on a solitary chair in a drafty space next to a noisy garage, or as said, literally sitting on a curb because there's no indoor seating at all. The best bit was that Lee, I believe a member of the family who runs this business, came out to speak with me personally while they were finishing up with the car. He spoke with me in language that I could understand, but not with condescension. There were a number of potential issues with the car, and he prioritized them for me, but he didn't make me feel pressured in any way. I feel like Yelp helped me to find a great fit for a new auto shop, and it's a great relief. I'd highly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants to feel confident about a family-run business that is professional, caring, and extremely well-rounded in terms of services available at a single location. It's a vehicle that's not all that commonly available in this part of the country, and our price limit was right at the limit of what would be reasonable. He listened to us very carefully, asked lots of important questions, then set out on what can only be properly described as a "quest" -- and FOUND exactly what we were looking for! He was able to negotiate a great deal on it for us, then brought it back to the shop. This is where it gets even more wonderful, because the shop is known for being owned and operated by a mechanic with a sterling personal reputation and professional credentials, having trained in a shop up in Guilford, VT that is literally known as the very best one in the whole area. They assured us they'd go through and fix anything and everything on the vehicle that needed tweeking or repair before we picked it up, to make sure it was up to THEIR standards of excellence -- and that the price would not go above our limit even if they had to eat some of the cost. They explained this is because they shopped for the vehicle with their mechanical expertise, so if it cost more to fix it was that they'd assessed it wrong and should make good on it. Well, long story short, we took delivery of exactly the used vehicle we wanted, in perfect shape, looking like it came off a showroom floor, and it's everything we could have dreamed and hoped for. In the process, we found a mechanic we'll use and trust from now on, and made friends to boot! It's not easy to find a really superior mechanic and shop that has a personal value system based on ethics of doing what's right. Green River Auto is that place! And if you want a used car, I honestly do not see how you can do ANY better than you will if you go talk to Doug there. If he can't find it for you, it's not available. I've lived all over the country, from Texas to California and back again, and I have NEVER found a shop like this one, and never even imagined a person like Doug existed. I had driven on a flat, and if you're unaware, this can rapidly degrade the quality of your drive. You can wear a CB joint, your axel, or your rotor, if I recall, and too much wear on these can do immense damage to your car's future. I had replaced two of my tires and still felt a wobble. How could it be the tires, I thought? This is why College Street Motors' experience comes into play. The car might as well be a multi-piece orchestra, with brake drums, piston percussion, and wheel woodwinds. I don't intend to go over the top with this metaphor, because it sounds like a bunch of noise and shaking for me. The mechanic left me a very detailed note, describing how there was nothing more discernible than the loud noise coming from the tires I had yet to replace. No wobbling due to damage to other parts of the car. Plus, I believe they warranty their work, maybe I'm just thinking of my AAA membership. After my tires were replaced, I was relieved at how right they were. As internal combustion engine drivetrain cars are complex, so are electrical cars in their own way. It's a world I have yet to get into, or may never dig deep enough to really gain a foothold of experience. Luckily, there're mechanics just down the street for me that took only a bit of time to diagnose the problem, find a tire match for the ones I had just gotten new, and then both install and balance. I bet their experience pays dividends to other customers, too, who are hoping to make sense of a new problem with little labor and diagnostics. I had an engine and a transmission error code. A mechanic at the shop also checked fluids and found burned metal in them, not a great sign. They told me in the gentlest way possible it was time to get a new car. I asked what I owed them and they refused to charge me. Coming from NYC, I was taken aback to be treated with such kindness and good faith by strangers running a business. We talked more about cars and about some new cars to avoid that they are seeing a lot of problems with. Since this visit, I bought new car. In general, I don't use mechanics. But my wife's brakes started squealing, and she wanted us to find a good mechanic we could trust for the big jobs (Translation: she doesn't want to die if I mess up her brakes.) I called a couple of friends, and they both recommended Jeff at Greg's. I can't say enough good things about Jeff and his crew. I called and asked about replacing all 4 rotors and pads. Got quoted a very good price, and scheduled in for a Tuesday. Jeff called a few hours into Tuesday, and let me know that the front brakes were fine and didn't need replacing. I'd forgotten that we just replaced them not that long ago, and they didn't have many miles on them, just rust. The rears needed replacing, but the front just needed the rust ground off to stop the squealing. Now, a lesser mechanic would have seen the brakes were fine, and replaced them anyway; we'd have gotten what we asked for. Jeff doesn't roll that way. He fixed the actual problem, and it cost half of what we were quoted. Another note, the rotors he sold us are quality rotors. Ceramic coated so they won't rust after 5 minutes in the rain (unlike the old rotors our last mechanic installed!) All in all, Jeff and his crew are top notch. They clearly explained the work needed..in my case a ck engine light was flashing on my daughters 2014 Nissan Pathfinder and while suspecting the catalytic converter they suggested a tuneup first hoping that would solve the problem w/o having to replace the converter. A week, 6 spark plugs, 6 ignition coils & $2200 later the ck engine light came back on (something they told me could happen) and I had to have the cat. converter replaced anyway... which I had done @ another shop closer to home that specializes in that type work. No doubt the plugs & coils needed replacing but I just thought $2200 for a tuneup was way too expensive...the garage that ultimately replaced the converter confirmed my thinking telling me I overpaid by about $500 for the tuneup. In summary if you're in a pinch like I was and can't shop around, Two Guys Garage can certainly be trusted to do quality and timely work... just be sure to bring your checkbook cause it's gonna cost ya.
