I wanted to leave a review regarding the recent purchase of a pre-owned and rather expensive Nikkor lens (#1766). I reside in California and I was a little concerned about making a purchase for such a costly item without being able to see the lens in hand. this store is the real deal. maybe much of their focus is on supplying the local pro's. the staff is definitely knowledgeable. in fact i wouldnt be surprised if half the people there are pro photographers working for the employee discount. i am always surprised when they have the newest best hot lens or camera in stock. i guess i shouldn't be any more. my father and i have bought most of our better gear here. as far as price goes most of the big names (nikon, tamron, sigma) set the price for high end gear so there isnt a lot of room. you might be able to do better price wise online however more than once i went in there set on purchasing product A but after using it in the store understood why product B (stupid gitzo tripod $$$) was the better product hands down. this is one of the few stores not called B&H where you can still go and get that experience. if i am serious about a purchase i am going to ACE i am not sure about the negative reviews. you are not going to find a better selection or knowledge locally. you might find someone friendlier but odds are that nice person doesnt have anything to sell but there smile. read more

Very helpful! I was trying to determine whether the old 35mm camera my dad used to take photos of me over 30 years ago was still worth using for a photography class. Great selection of equipment, especially bags. They carry some equipment I didn't expect, like Acratech heads. The sales rep helped me find an inexpensive solution for a tripod/D-ring issue that I thought would cost me a brand new ball head. Definitely the best camera store I've visited in the DMV. I used to live in Ashburn so I frequented Ace for years, and since I moved about an hour away I will still make the drive for all the knowledge the staff has. I literally live 5 minutes from another camera store that has a decent stock but they don't have the experience with the equipment. I want to know about the practical use of gear and how it performs which I get from Ace and at the same or better price. Why would you go anywhere else? The only downside I have is my pockets aren't big enough for all the toys, but grudgingly that is a problem with me and not them. read more

Awful customer service on a visit to purchase nikon d800 . I was hoping to feel the d800 prior to purchasing and to understand some reasons for upgrading from my current nikon d300. However, the sales staff was absolutely no interested in answering any questions at a not so busy time of day judging by the number of people in the store. (I visited on a Wednesday afternoon about a month ago). After about 4-5 minutes, the sales rep told me that he had a phone call waiting. This seemed strange to me and i took my cue and left.....for good to never return to this store. I wish i could recap my full 5 minutes of agony in this store but that would just be another wasted 5 minutes due to ace photo. My previous review may have been removed but I feel this is a much simpler but fair representation of my experience with Ace photo of Ashburn. I have nothing against visiting stores a little further away and will choose to visit more customer friendly stores in future. read more

The state of the photographic equipment store in the DMV area is pretty sad. Ritz, gone. Calument, gone. Droves of Mom&Pop shops, gone. So its pretty telling that even though Ace Photo is one of the only remaining games in town I probably will never be returning. Here are the positives: Fantastic selection of equipment for sale. This includes pro and consumer bodies from many different manufacturers (not just Nikon & Canon). Tons of lighting equipment, tons of stands and other accessories. This place is a cornucopia of equipment. Friendly staff. The people that work here are generally very helpful and will go out of their way to answer questions and provide suggestions. As at most camera stores they do try and push the uninitiated towards the more expensive purchases ... but I cannot hold this against them as tons of businesses do the same. Rental studio: They have a decent sized rental studio on their upper floor, complete with a *rail lighting system* and automated backdrop holders! The selection of light modifiers is pretty slim but still ... awesome space! And now the cons: Depending on where you are ... the distance. For Maryland dwellers like myself this place is quite the trek. Price: The prices here seem to range from average to upper middle edge of the scale. Don't expect to find (m)any deals. Return Policy: This is the single reason I will no longer be taking my business there. I understand that they need to combat the 'use and return' syndrome endemic to the photography business, but wow - I've never experienced such a strict and inflexible return policy as the owner has put in place here! Frankly I would probably still go if the offered returns with a 15% restocking fee, but they do not. So for now, I will stick with the camera stores in Baltimore, and online retailers. Take Heed-BadExperiance I went to this store after reading the reviews I was thinking that maybe the others could be wrong. It turns out that I was the one who was wrong for going. The store owner treated me like I was not important and seemed to be arrogant. I tried to purchase an item, which took a long time just to be seen by someone, and ask the owner if he could demo the costly-used-item I was about to purchase. After he worked with other customers, which I was told was a big spending customer, he was all smiles for them, but not for me. I keep asking for some kind of customer service, after an hour+ of standing around waiting. Finally, someone did come to assist me and they did try to help me. I finally saw something I liked which was a used light meter. After the person went to the owner to tell him the price I would like to negotiate on the used item, the owner came over and was short and rude with me and to make a long story short...I would give this store a D+. They forget who is the paying customer. The store does carry many camera supplies and camera's at MSRP, but you will be waiting for hours to make a purchase. The owner can be rude so watch out. Also, unless you're a big spender, which the owner does not like anyone trying to internet-price-match nor negotiate his set-prices on used equipment, don't purchase costly used items that he says has a 6mo. warranty...because if he can't take care of his customers in person, guess what when your out-of-town and after sending it to him for warranty repair. You might get it back after a long long waiting period. In other words, just buy whatever price he puts on the used items and shut up. I tried to go back and still purchase the item, believing I could still use the device, but why? I can get the same wedget from amazon for $100's less. Take heed. read more

I returned a lens used for only 10 shots and was amazed by the resistance of the staff at this location. Managers here should post their return policy near the registers to make customers aware of their purchase agreement. Sure, you could ask and receive inaccurate information. However, once you receive your receipt, its a done deal. Returns are at the managers discretion, and he'll even attempt to skew the printed return period to his benefit. He also attempted to exclude the sales tax amount from the return, which is illegal. Also, the manager loudly degraded and chastised the associate who communicated the incorrect info in front of the entire store. This was highly inappropriate management action. Sure, it was *mostly* sorted in the end. However, that entire interaction ensures that I never return. Borrowlenses and BH Photo for the win. read more

No one has as much photography STUFF as these guys. The owner and all of his employees' are truly passionate about photography and know their gear better than anybody. They also carry just about everything in their store, from the basic consumer class cameras and lenses all the way up to the largest and highest grade pro gear! They are even Pro Leica Dealers! As an independent store, they are tough but fair about returns. Basically as it was explained to me, there are no returns on any electronics unless they are defective within the first two weeks, in that case they will exchange it in-store. Otherwise it will have to go to the manufacturer for repair or replacement. This is also the premier place to go for camera bags... there are more bags in this store than in the rest of the camera stores in the area... combined. They have a WHOLE second showroom just for bags. They also offer classes taught by area photographic instructors (including a 4 day intense Photoshop class) It's a giant candy store for photographers! They also offer a wide variety of printing services, most notably they have a really big lab printer than can do Kodak Metallic paper... which has to be seen to be believed! They have a graphic arts professional on-site Monday, Wednesday, and Friday who can do miracles on Photoshop and understands color management really well. One of their employees is a walking Leica database, and each of their other employees have their own gifts and knowledge to share. It's truly a unique store and a frequent stop on my way home from work. read more

I always walk away disappointed with the way owner and his verbally abusive employees conduct business. Most of them are clueless about the products they carry and their inventory status. customer service needs improvement. one of the main advantage that local store has over large online retail is face to face customer service. and yet not many local store realize this advantage. online retail store such as amazon customer service is 10x better. some of the sale person i spoke to were very friendly and helpful. other were not so friendly and helpful. some of them does have this elitist attitude, similar to people i would see on photography forums. it's unfortunate that the un-friendly ones stood out the most. i just don't understand why there are so many people in the photography circle that are rude and have this elitist attitude. i hope local photography stores realize that customer focus is what it's all about, because i would like to see more and more of them, not less and less of them. read more

A friend of mine and I had went to purchase to some camera equipment for her since she is in photography school right now. She got recommendations on which type of equipment she should use for her assignment and then we left. Later that night, she was setting up her equipment when she realized that a small screw for one of the pieces of equipment was missing. Without that one specific screw, the equipment would not function properly. We ended taking the whole thing back to exchange it. We thought it would take quite a while but it literal words, it was a quick in-and-out. They didn't even ask for the receipt! Things are grouped by manufactures however they seem to be in little more than a pile. I needed a print created in an unusual size and only had to wait a few minutes while the photo tech checked to see if the print could be created in the size I wanted. It is rare to find a Camera Retail store that stocks such a full range of product that you can see, handle, obtain guidance and take it with you upon purchase. Folks express that they are upset because they find an online $100 cheaper and ACE will not match the price. They Shouldn't !!! It cost money to have a local store, inventory and experts standing there giving you free advice. Why come there in the first place? Go online if you don't find value in what a Local store brings. Also, it is not credible when people say they " went to another local retailer and bought the $6000 lens because it was cheaper" -- There are no other Local Professional Class Camera Retailers in Northern VA or close proximity. read more

An independent camera store thriving in a tough market. Ace carries the usual Canon and Nikon, but also Olympus and Leica (a good selection). Also high end camera bags, like Billingham and Domke (a really good selection). The staff are knowledgable shooters. The owner, Mo, knows the industry, including some future plans, and always gets new equipment first. He has a good Leica clientele with backorders. Ace carries more stock than the chains. This store has multiple rooms and an upstairs training center. Make sure you see them all. One room is practically all bags! The staff and owner are helpful and friendly. I have a LOUD message for all of the 'Wal-Mart-Mentality' folks out there that, after a salesperson has just spend 15 - 30 minutes educating you on various photography products, will stand in front of the salesperson and begin to price shop on your i-phone. And, when the salesperson tells you that your rude behavior is not appreciated, you get your 'feelings hurt', then you go to an 'on-line' review site and "sling mud": ACE Photo is not attempting to 'price' compete with big box stores and on-line warehouses, which have volume purchase advantage and no customer service. You need to go to Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Costco, etc., and get your "customer service" there; or, go 'on-line' and order your photography products from a warehouse for shipment to your doorstep. Please Do Not smear the good reputation of the outstanding photography store that is ACE Photo. There is a reviewer on this site that arrogantly brags he uses ACE to check out equipment, but never buys anything. Instead, after using ACE's staff and inventory, he then goes 'on-line' and purchases the product at a lower price. There is real cost associated with a storefront, inventory and a knowledgeable staff, and these cost are reasonably reflected in the price of the products. This person's actions are paramount to stealing. The larger issue is, if everyone begins to practice this behavior, then ACE Photo will not sustain these services. Ace Photo is the best photography store in the region PERIOD. The staff is comprised of enthusiastic, accomplish professional and amateur photographers that want to share their knowledge with people that have a serious interest in all levels and types of photography. They are photo enthusiast first and salespeople second. They will give you their honest opinions - not a guess or a sales pitch. If the store is crowded, then you may need to wait for a while until someone can help you. But, if you're patient, when they get to you they will stay with you until you're questions are answered to your satisfaction (unless you start to shop your cell phone, which is just BS). I discovered ACE after I realized that PENN Camera was dying after attempting to compete with the 'price only' big box and on-line retailers. I've been a customer for about two-years. It is a rare and excellent resource for photographers of all skill levels. The store's stock of photography equipment is unparalleled for any retail store.
