My review is for the Ace's location on Nolana, in McAllen. I hate dining alone, so I got my order to go. I ordered the senior's catfish dinner ($12.99 for seniors). The picture you see is on my own plate at home, so I'm confident it will look better at the restaurant. The senior catfish dinner includes two pieces of fish, 1 side, and a smallish piece of cornbread. I was pleasantly surprised to find a bonus third piece of fish (that's never happened before!). It was cooked perfectly, a nice crunchy coating that was flavorful and golden. The filets were a bit on the small side. The cornbread was tasty, and was helped along with a schmeer of butter and honey. Not really much to say about the side salad, your average size, your average salad. Oh yeah, this meal also came with a drink! So it was pretty rounded out. I had a chunk of a brownie that I felt was a tad pricey ($4.99). It was chocolatey and gooey, but dense. The brownie has nuts and chocolate chips. I feel it would have been better with just the nuts, but that's personal preference. The brownie rates a solid 3 star, but nothing more. The catfish was good, but overall, I think the meal was ok. I'd have it again, but it was nothing to talk about. The manager was at the counter to wait on my to-go order and she was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Good staff. This place offers a MILITARY DISCOUNT for the veterans meal only. Anyplace that offers *any kind discount - is alright in my book. But those that offer one for military and first responders, will consistently get my business. read more

Ace's was highly recommended by staff at the hotel. I have to agree that it was very good. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to eat there but it is what it so. I got 6 ribs and double cole slaw. I really enjoyed the baby back ribs. The are more meaty than tender as I am used to. This is not a complaint but an observation. Very meaty, very flavorful, and tender (more St. Louis tender). I was not crazy about the cole slaw and they should be a bit ashamed of the loaf bread. If you are going to serve loaf bread make sure it is high quality and stick to the roof of your mouth soft...and fresh. They used nacho cheese not real cheese, no beans, way more chips and cheese than meat . Lacked meat on the panchos . A couple of pieces of jalapeño's and a tiny bit of pico de gallo . Tortilla was not fresh . Tea was decent but that's the only thing we enjoyed . Soooo disappointed. Will never go back . Way over priced for the quality and amount of food . $30 down the drain . As this was our first time there we ordered the BBQ taquitos from the magazine and their signature sandwich, The Ace. The cashier suggested we try the peach cobbler a la mode so when in Rome.......! Prices were all reasonable on their menu. Food came out nice and hot after about 10-15 mins as there were some large parties in the restaurant. Everything looked great and visually appeasing!! The flavors of the smoked pork, brisket and sausage was moist and juicy...not dry at all. My wife didn't care for some of the fatty cuts, but we agreed that it added moist flavor to the rest of the meats. Had some fries and potato salad on the side and I LOVED the crunch of the fries and soft on the inside! Also, the soft oiled yellow corn tortillas served with taquitos were delicious!! Definitely hit the spot ! The peach cobbler was amazing! Sweet and warm mixing with vanilla ice cream while centered around a large fluffy warm piece of bread pudding!! A dish worth having again and again and again for any sweet tooth! As far as BBQ joints go I would definitely consider coming back to Ace's first and foremost. Atmosphere was very relaxed and casual. The food came out quicker than we expected. I had the Ace (brisket, pulled pork, sausage) and my wife the Boss...Both were delicious. Their rice and beans mixture was also very tasty and we both loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed their BBQ sauces on the table... especially the spicy one. It wasn't overpowering but it was a very slow heat that built up with every bite. Very nice waitress who also came by when needed. The loaded baked potato was very loaded...nice amount of briskey..however it's just my personal preference but would be nice if they mashed the inside just a bit with the butter and cheese just to get that creamy texture before topping it off. They definitely redeemed themselves!!!! After having a poor experience previously this week, we gave this BBQ place another chance and I'm glad we did. The moist cut brisket was very tender this time. They upgraded the order to a loaded potato instead with the moist cut meat. The Carolina sandwich also tasted fresh this time around as well.
