My review is for the Ace's location on Nolana, in McAllen. I hate dining alone, so I got my order to go. I ordered the senior's catfish dinner ($12.99 for seniors). The picture you see is on my own plate at home, so I'm confident it will look better at the restaurant. The senior catfish dinner includes two pieces of fish, 1 side, and a smallish piece of cornbread. I was pleasantly surprised to find a bonus third piece of fish (that's never happened before!). It was cooked perfectly, a nice crunchy coating that was flavorful and golden. The filets were a bit on the small side. The cornbread was tasty, and was helped along with a schmeer of butter and honey. Not really much to say about the side salad, your average size, your average salad. Oh yeah, this meal also came with a drink! So it was pretty rounded out. I had a chunk of a brownie that I felt was a tad pricey ($4.99). It was chocolatey and gooey, but dense. The brownie has nuts and chocolate chips. I feel it would have been better with just the nuts, but that's personal preference. The brownie rates a solid 3 star, but nothing more. The catfish was good, but overall, I think the meal was ok. I'd have it again, but it was nothing to talk about. The manager was at the counter to wait on my to-go order and she was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Good staff. This place offers a MILITARY DISCOUNT for the veterans meal only. Anyplace that offers *any kind discount - is alright in my book. But those that offer one for military and first responders, will consistently get my business.

Disappointing , no flavor & dry .... No wonder everyone goes here, it's cheap yes but the food no good, then customers serve was bad, didn't know if the teen new or scared to take orders .. it was dine -in and she had it for to go ... vibe was cold and old ....

Ace's was highly recommended by staff at the hotel. I have to agree that it was very good. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to eat there but it is what it so. I got 6 ribs and double cole slaw. I really enjoyed the baby back ribs. The are more meaty than tender as I am used to. This is not a complaint but an observation. Very meaty, very flavorful, and tender (more St. Louis tender). I was not crazy about the cole slaw and they should be a bit ashamed of the loaf bread. If you are going to serve loaf bread make sure it is high quality and stick to the roof of your mouth soft...and fresh. I can't wait to go back to try the catfish and the Carolina sandwich.

Their chicken is really good, not too salty like other bbq places. Potato salad is also a must have!

It's the best I've eaten here in the RGV and coming in a close second to City Market in Luling, TX. It's that good! This visit I decided to try their Three Brisket Combo meal. It comes with three brisket tacos (corn or flour tortillas) loaded with brisket, a couple grilled jalapeño slices, grilled onions and some cilantro. They didn't need salsa but a squeeze of lime might've been helpful. The side I chose was their house made coleslaw which was pretty tasty. I ordered their green beans with onion and bacon but a few minutes after ordering a fellow came out to tell me they were out of the beans so I settled for the slaw. I also ordered an order of their house cut, tallow fried french fries. Man, were they GOOD! As in THE BEST FRIES I'VE EVER EATEN IN MY LIFE GOOD!!! They are worth the visit all by themselves. The combo meal comes with a bottomless drink as well. The wife and I split the Combo meal, added the fries and a small side of potato salad that she wanted. We each ate one taco and about half of the sides. So we had a leftover taco, some fries and half our sides for the next day. All for like $21. The combo meal is $13.99 which is a pretty good deal in itself. The fries were like $6 and well worth the price. We will definitely be back. I would also highly recommend their 50/50 Rice and Beans topped with Brisket Bowl. That provided two meals for me when I ordered it previously. You can't go wrong at this little joint.

As someone who loves BBQ and has tried many places like Lone Star, Ace's, Reyna's, and even HEB, I was curious to see how this one compared. Unfortunately, it ended up being a huge disappointment--especially when it came to the sides, which were the worst I've ever had. What We Ordered: I ordered the Chicken Fajita plate, which comes with two sides (though I'm not sure if I paid extra for the drink). I chose macaroni and potato salad as my sides and even added an extra side of mashed potatoes to try more options. My fiancé ordered ribs with the same sides. Our total came out to about $38, which is pricey for two people. Service and Presentation: The food arrived less than five minutes after we sat down--red flag number one. At a sit-down restaurant, I expect fresh, hot food, not something prepared long before and left sitting around. To make matters worse, we were literally the only people in the restaurant, yet the food was served cold. The portion sizes were underwhelming for the price. The chicken was hard, old, and cold to the touch, although the flavor was decent. The tortillas were hot but hard as a rock, and the pico de gallo was served in a tiny condiment container. I didn't even bother trying it. The Sides: The mashed potatoes were runny and flavorless, as if they were overmixed. However, the gravy was a saving grace with its pieces of green peppers and onions, giving it a homestyle touch. The potato salad was sweet and gritty, likely from a bulk wholesale tub like the kind sold at HEB, and it was far from appetizing. The macaroni and cheese was the biggest offense. It came cold in a Styrofoam cup (as did all the sides), and I couldn't get past the weird, sour taste. It wasn't a sharp cheddar richness--it was sour, like someone added lemon to it. Oddly, my fiancé's macaroni didn't have the same sourness, but it was still bland and unappetizing. It's safe to say my 10-year old brother couldn't have messed up a microwave kraft cup more than they did with their "in house" recipe. I will give credit where it's due. The tea, the variety of sauces, the ribs, and the overall cleanliness of the dining area were all decent. Final Thoughts: In my short 25 years, I've never had such an unpleasant experience with food. I'm greatly dissatisfied and can only hope this was an isolated incident. My advice? Please consider revising the recipes for the above mentioned sides, especially the macaroni and cheese. I'm usually the kind of person who gives restaurants a second chance because I enjoy trying new places and I'm not picky. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back here. It's just not it.
