Southern Fried is a small, quaint restaurant, housed in a large, old, white house in the heart of mission, TX. The house has numerous old artifacts that you'd have found in any mid-20th century farm house. The tables are covered with red and white checkered plastic table cloths, definitely nothing fancy here. But the food is OUTSTANDING!!! They are know in the area as having the BEST fried chicken. However, I was surprised on our first visit that their fried chicken was, in reality, fried chicken tenders. Which, by the way, they do exceedingly well. Always tender and juicy with a great seasoned coating. They also do a wonderful job of frying and seasoning their catfish too. Sometimes catfish can taste sorta muddy but not here. Nice and crunchy with an appropriate amount of cornmeal based breading to fish. Their shrimp is tasty but several times I've had it, it seems a bit over cooked. They have a number of sides including coleslaw, green beans, baked beans, fries, etc. I always seem to get a tossed green salad which is simply chopped romain lettuce and halved grape tomatoes. But we've tried other sides and they are decent too. One side they do NOT serve is good old fashioned hush puppies! I find that very strange. Service is always nice and friendly and on our last visit where we were meeting new friends, the6 didn't seem to mind that we sat at the table a couple hours visiting. Our waitress obliged by being unobtrusive, continually filling our beverages until we finally left, ten minutes before closing time. I am just amazed at how absolutely delicious Southern Fried is, I have never tried their food before but after providing the fish for my sons party they have gained a new costumer!! We ordered 25 pieces of filet at I think a very reasonable price, our guest loved it so much we only have two pieces left!!! We have tried to eat there 2 Fridays in a row. First one they were closed with a note on the gate. I think it was graduation day. So we tried so call before we went the second Friday their phone went straight to voicemail which was full. So we decided to go anyway the gate was open but the business door was locked. I think the reason is that it was a full house, two orders were for people picking up to go, and two groups and my group arrived at the same time. So I took my wife and 1 yr old son for lunch and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We understand that it might be a longer wait due to the food being cooked once ordered. We had an order of buffalo wings, the Dad's plate (fillets, jumbo shrimp, and tenders) and fries w/ beans as sides. So our son started getting fussy due to being hungry so this lady (I'm assuming the owner) brought him a tender so he could eat while we wait on our food. The place was a winner already! The wings were delicious! Nice and crispy...good amount of meat on the bone...and I loved the buffalo sauce. Right amount of tang and heat. Main course was also excellent. The homemade tartar sauce was creamy and tangy...the shrimp were excellent...and the fillets were the right amount of crisp on the outside while still being soft on the inside. Our son loved the tenders and ate 2 on his own. My wife said she lived the fillets. The fries were also very good...the right amount of seasoning on it. Only thing slightly lacking were the beans. I found them good ..my wife is more used to charro beans (lol) so she would've preferred them a little more spicy. I found them to be just right. I recommend Southern Fried to anyone craving really authentic comfort food. Truly, great tasting food.The tenders are full of flavor, moist and perfectly crispy! The French fries are deliciously fried and seasoned to perfection. The fillet and shrimp were very well bartered and had that awesome crunch you crave in fried seafood. Even the tartar and cocktail sauce were very delicious, and I am not a fan of either normally but really liked theirs. I ordered the baby daddy basket and my wife ordered the tender basket. We just moved to the area recently and were both very impressed and found a new spot for comfort food! Just a small twist of their juicy lemons did just fine! The sides are ok but, wish they had a few more options. The fries are the best option if they are hot & fresh (they weren't on my 2nd visit). Great value for your dollar here at Southern Fried! I got the Buddy meal with fries and green beans. I liked the great beans a lot more than the fries but the fries were still tasty. I just wish they weren't so flimsy. The Buddy meal had a huge fish fillet and (4) jumbo shrimp. My waitress was so on top of her game too so I never lacked a thing. Dining area is nice and confy, the decor is a bit off for a dining area, looks more like my uncles living room but that's just being picky. I ordered the "Dad's Plate", which consisted of several fried shrimp, chicken and fish with two sides. They have a few choices for your sides, I chose fries and coleslaw. Everything came out in a timely manner. I loved the shrimp! Everything was delicious though, fish was nice and soft inside and nice and crunchy on the outside. We read the reviews for this restaurant on Yelp and decided to eat dinner there. The restaurant is located in an interesting location, but we had no difficulties finding it. Parking might be a challenge if this restaurant and others in the area have a lot of patrons. I ordered the fish and shrimp basket with a side of beans. One side was included with the basket. My husband ordered the 10-piece chicken wing dinner with honey BBQ sauce and french fries. Both of us really enjoyed our meals and will come back. This is a quaint hole-in-the-wall spot. The customer service is phenomenal. The food is cooked to order, so don't be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes for your food.
