My house was going on the market, but there was a gas leak in the fireplace, and I urgently needed a part to repair it. Contacted many places and no one had it in stock, but Acme promised to order it. Didn't know how long it would take, but they would request it from the manufacturer and let me know when it came in if I paid in advance. Asked if it could be expedited, but they said no, it will get here when it gets here. So I prepaid in full and waited impatiently. They accidentally put two charges on my card, the right one, and an extra one that was clearly in error, so I called again to complain, and they managed to reverse the second charge, after several calls and a few days. About a week after the order, when there was no part and no update on delivery time, I found an online site that promised to send it to me, and I ordered it from them (pellethead.com). They sent me the part for less than half the price I had already paid, and got it to me in 2 days. Hated paying for it again, but I needed it right away. The repair was promptly completed, and Acme still didn't have the part. They wouldn't cancel the order. Eventually I was told that the part came in, but by then I was out of town and couldn't pick it up, and didn't need it anyway. Probably could have made a trip to the area to pick up the part, but that would cost far more than it was worth. I don't know what happened to the part, but I never got the part or a refund. read more

Just an insane price for very basic work. Tech was not super communicative, and didn't explain what he was doing despite me asking. When a horrible burning smell ensued, he shrugged and said it would go away in a few days. Was pretty cavalier about possible carbon monoxide leakage. But really it was the price that upset me the most. $350 to reset a fireplace? That's just greedy. I won't be using them again--even for overpriced DC its highway robbery. read more

OK. Tony is a super rude dude. As a matter of fact they all are. I never experienced this because Tony and Co. are not insane BUT I witnessed them being rude to everybody else. I get it. Selling gas stoves for that long is difficult. People have lots of questions they have heard many many times before. Problem is that it is the same in any industry. Doctors get the same repetitive questions and so do sales reps. Conundrum is that if you cant handle the questions while being friendly you are officially a relic AND that is what Tony and crew are. Dinosaur that simply wont change with the times. In short, dick&eads peddling stoves. What a travesty. We bought our stove and self installed. Its is easier than you think! If we could go elsewhere we would have. The DMV have few options and between Bromwells and Acme we chose the lesser evil of the two. Our stove works fine but not what we expected. Just half way there. We learned that it is a monopoly controlled by a handful of companies with many subsidiaries. It is worse than the window industry. Its a racket and a scam but what do you do. I went into Acme Stove today, it was the 4th business I tried to find a very small piece for my fireplace glass door. A very nice man asked me what he could help me with and I placed this tiny silicone piece on the counter. He showed me one of his sample doors and explained that it's not an easy thing to find. I left my name and number knowing that it could take ages or not available at all. To my delight he called me back this evening and told me he managed to find a 4' strip. Arranged a service call for a gas fireplace with a pilot that wouldn't stay lit and whatever overall inspection and maintenance might be needed. Charge was $365 and about all that was done was brush off the logs and tell me I needed a new thermocouple. Estimate for the thermocouple included the cost of the part, weighing less than a pound, with a $45 "freight" charge, plus $225 for installation. Altogether, these folks wanted $715 for what essentially was replacement of the pilot light assembly, a fairly simple job. This is a great place, my contractor told me about when I wanted to add a gas line to my wood burning fireplace. I called and asked if they had some on hand and they did. Told me to come on by and they could tell me all about them. I drove down they took there time with me to show me all the different options and price ranges. Showed me and informed of all safety information. Staff is friendly and safe with masks on. This was, by far, the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I'm 51 and have never felt so disrespected and disregarded. I've bought THREE stoves from this place, giving them the benefit of the doubt, but the 3rd one was the worst (none of them was a good experience). One of their installs had a critical flaw in it and could have burned my house down. They made promises they didn't keep, and repeatedly made commitments that they shrugged off as if I just didn't matter. They are truly dreadful, first they put a pellet stove in incorrectly, and we had to have the chimney relined and the stove redone. I would never have called again but Edwards will not service a stove not brought from them. I called Acme whom we had brought not one but two stoves from before we knew better and tried to get a service for the pellet stove, and of course they have nobody and of course just like last time they blame everyone else but themselves. Great place to deal with around the grill I bought 4 years ago. The burners were starting to rust out and I had an upcoming small gathering to grill and chill. The main guy helped me sort out the burner I needed, gave me some advice on how to better heat up my grill for searing steaks, and to clean the racks better. I probably could have gone another year on the burner according to him but I err on the side of my forgetfulness and replaced early. MHP Grills are awesome and I recommned this shop to all my friends looking to upgrade from junky grills to something higher end, where it won't rust out fully after 3-4 years. My lower rack probably has another 2 years before it needs replacing. Everything else is solid. read more

The previous homeowners who had it installed five years ago left all receipts and manuals--so I know they bought it at Acme Stove. When I called, the guy was very curt with me at first, and it only went downhill from there. First he said, "it's probably a battery issue." No. "Well, have you checked the receiver?!" and because he was SO patronizing and rude, I was stunned, and didn't react RIGHT AWAY, and he barked "I'll take that as a no!" When I said "I haven't answered you. I'm reacting to your condescending tone." He said, "you calling me condeNsending?" I said "nope, that's not the word." And he said "I'm sorry you feel that way. True Woodburners best kept secret!!! Found out about the place 3 years ago and was more than ready to pull the trigger on replacing my 30+ yr. old Treemont. I shopped around for a bit but couldn't beat the knowledge and customer service provided by Mike J. Safety and satisfaction were key in buying a new stove. Not only was the price great; the new Lopi is amazing on burn time and uses 1/3 of the normal amount of logs than the old stove. BEYOND rude. Our parents had safety questions about a fireplace they bought and had installed by their contractor. Tony was incredibly rude, short, and wouldn't let my husband get his questions out because he "already spoke with the contractor and our parents". We bought a woodstove from them in November and they were great through the buying process. That is, until they had our money. Then we had all kinds of trouble getting the stove installed. They assured us it would cost a certain amount, but surprise! when the so-called "professional" installers showed up, the cost jumped a thousand dollars!! We ended up getting a (fantastic)private installer to do the job for us and all was well, that ended well. That is until about two weeks ago when I opend the stove to add more wood and the handle broke off in my hand, after only running it for 4 weeks. :( I called Acme Stove immidiately to have them come fix it. You would not believe the schpiel I got over the phone "We SELL woodstoves, we don't FIX them", "How on earth did you manage to break the handle?", " What were YOU doing wrong that caused the handle to break?", "I've been in this business for over 20 years and I have NEVER heard of this happening", "This is going to take WEEKS, if not, months to get fixed....its winter, it'll be impossible to get through to the manufacturer to order the part", "Yeah, the part is covered under warranty but the labor to install it is not, so you will have to pay for that"; "No, I haven't gotten around to your broken handle yet because we handle customer issues as they come in, and you aren't up yet. Wait until WE call YOU, this is going to take a long time" These guys were patronizing, rude, unapologetic, and completely, 100% uninterested in fixing the woodstove that we had just paid thousands for! How they stay in business treating people this way is beyond me. So what about our woodstove you ask? Well, my husband stopped into a woodstove place near his work last Saturday. By that evening, the manager of the store had emailed us to let us know that they'd love to get our stove fixed for us. He had contacted the manufacturer by the end of the weekend. The part was here by Wednesday. Today two very nice technicians came out and had the handle fixed within 20 minutes. No labor charge at all. Completely fixed in under 6 days. Of course, if I had waited for Acme Stove Company to accomplish this it could have taken "weeks, if not months..." You've been warned! Steer clear!!! ;) read more

My gas firelog stopped working. I went to 3 other fireplace companies in the area before going to Acme Stove. And I'm so glad I went to Acme before making any decision! There's this really nice guy there named Tony. He pulled out some parts and walked me through how to fix my problem. It was a super simple fix and only took me about 5 minutes to do when I got home. I just need to buy a cannister of air from Home Depot for $8. Voila! He saved me nearly $1500. Every other competitor in the area told me I had to buy a new fireplace and they all wanted around $1500. I'm very thankful for Tony and for Acme Stove. Came here looking for a very specific stove from Vermont Castings and they were listed as a vendor. After waiting five minutes for someone to speak with us, we were introduced to Tony who we told we were looking for a small wood burning stove to heat an all season porch. He immediately says you can't use a stove on a porch because the humidity, but when I told him what model we were considering from Vermont Castings he changed his tune and said that's the only one that would work. That said, he didn't have a floor model to show us ("I just sold that in February) and didn't have a price list to quote us, so he took our information to get back to us. Two business days later, I get a phone message around 3:45pm from Tony saying that it would be $4,300 installed despite me telling him that our builder was going to install it. I called back around ten minutes later to find out he left for the day, so I left a message saying we needed to know the price just for the stove. Tony called me back the next day around 1030am and said it would be $3,600 in the "Bordeaux" (one of the two colors it comes in) including shipping. I asked how much for the "Classic Black" as we indicated we could be interested in either. "I don't know, I didn't price that out" Tony replied "Probably a couple of hundred dollars less." So I asked if "couple" meant $200, $500 or $700 to which he says "Couple means $200.) So then I ask how much if we picked it up rather than having it shipped and he says that was the cost of having it shipped to them. Something told me that was a lot more than it should have been and told him as such, saying we'd have to get back to him. Sure enough, I googled the stove model and price and found a 2014 suggested retail price list saying it should be $1,039 for the black, $1,419 for the Bordeaux. Then I emailed to other retailers, one of which got back to me in 19 minutes (not two days, plus another half day to actually talk to them) with a price of "$1065 plus tax and $125 S/H to our store". Tony either didn't quote us for the right model or was trying to triple the price of the stove despite assuring us "We always sell below retail price..." read more

You will go here because honestly there are few vendors that have the selection and they are well located if you are in the NOVA area. You will meet a portly guy named Tony White, a Duck Dynasty type, who will ignore you while he speaks to other clients with great authority. You will be impressed by his knowledge. "Oh, here's a real gas geek, not like the big store guys" you'll say. Tony will not sell you the stuff. "We've been doing this for 85 years as a family business". He will present options. But you will want the best because, after all, a gritty, contractor type is showing you the goods. You will likely buy Mendota. Pricey but, hell, it's cold there and 'you need something reliable'. $4000+. How about installation and service? ***** And this is where it gets crazy **** Tony will say "well, Scott of All Gas Concepts has been our go-to service guy?". How much? "I don't know, around $1500". What if we want our own contractor? Here's where Duckman will snap "Why would you do that?!". OK. OK. You relent. All Gas Concepts will show up with FOUR people to measure the stuff once the product is delivered. Will quote you nearly $3000 (!!) for installation. After installation, Scott arranges for county inspector. Inspector will find some issues. Scott needs to be back here, he says. You call Scott. You call Scott. Weeks. Months. This is serious. You will call Acme Stove. "Why did you refer me to this contractor?" Tony starts yelling "well, he is out of town. sir. sir, i'm talking to you. I will not stand for this, sir........!!!" He's yelling at YOU, the person who parted with $7500 of hard earned cash. Weeks later. Scott will show up. Incredibly rude, gets into arguments going "Well, if only you had blah blah blah". This is a down home racket, as someone mentioned. Which vendor will give you the name of only one contractor? This is a Duck Dynasty racket. Product is good, but they'd didn't make it. Some Canadian or North American company did. Their job is retail -- customer service. And I swear this "85 year old family run" company is the worst I have ever encountered. my experience was a little different from everyone elses. we bought a Mendota fireplace gas insert from them. we shopped around, and they were the only ones that had a discount (ten percent) on these inserts. I dealt with Mike Joseph, who was very helpful and patient in finding us the fireplace we wanted. these guys sell inserts, but don't do the installing themselves. They contract out (probably get a kickback from the referral, who knows). the guy they sent us was less than impressive. we opted to go with another installer, which was fine with ACME. i had some follow up questions with Mike, and he answered them. i saw the way other customers were treated, and it was less than ideal, so i tried mainly to deal with Mike. read more

I had a horrible experience with Woodburners a few years ago, so when we bought a house in Falls Church we tried ACME. They were fabulous to work with. We ordered gas crystal system, they had a serviceman come out a few days before the install to walk through the home and determine what was needed. They ran our gas lines and installed the unit in no time. From order to final install it was less than 2 weeks. Staff were very professional and knowledgeable. (Fairfax/FallsChurch location) I have an almost-20-year-old gas log with remote control -- except the remote control and receiver no longer work, and I have to -- like the early American settlers -- walk up to the fireplace, bend over, and flip the switch, MANUALLY to start and stop the fire. The horror. Tony White patiently and professionally worked with me to try to get a new RC/receiver system to work with my Jurassic era logs. No luck, the closest we got was a set that would remotely start the log, but only keep it going as long as I held the button down. Tony gave me two choices: (1) For about ~$1,300 he could get me a new system - logs, valve, remote, receiver (2) For about $0, I could get off my ass, walk up to the fireplace, and keep flipping the switch on and off until the switch itself stops working, which would likely be in another season or two ... or five ... or ten. Ultimately I went with option 2 and also went with Tony's advice for someone to make a maintenance/service inspection of the gas logs and valve. Apparently 2001 to 2019 is too long to go without servicing these things. Who knew? As a homeowner who knows a great deal about Shakespeare, calculus and ERISA, and damned near nothing about gas logs, I was pleased to find someone who DOES know gas logs and who treats a do-it-yourself homeowner with courtesy, respect and integrity I can hardly wait for the switch to fail so I can get these guys to install a new system. read more

Dont remember why a dock of one star is posted but what ever it was, they made up for by springing this awesome Mendota gas insert on us that was a jewel. This is a traditional , no big whoop brick rambler 1961 vintage in Arlington and somehow they found out that we have a 1755 historic log rustic house and selected this black rounded top insert face that looks awesome. I, who am an artist chose this contemporary model but it would be BLAHZAY. This early American iron look front, simple black thing screams "statement" . Mendota with an understated non flashy unit is sheer genius in my opinion. I am so happy but because of the Owebama Admin. have never been able to afford the gas to operate it. Thank Gaud it is a Mendota as it will last for many years when hopefully some day I will be able to keep warm. read more

We were looking for a fireplace for a kitchen renovation. My initial contact with Acme in Rockville was ok. I visited the location and the sales associate Jesse seemed knowledgeable. I sent over the plans and he was going to circle back with his team and provide several options. That's when it all started going South. There was no proactivity on his part, I had to call back every day and he acted as though he had never spoken to me each time I called. Then it was that he was trying to get someone to come out to look at the property, then it was he was sick. The final straw was when he told me that sending someone to the house, which by the way was his idea, was going to require a deposit. He didn't know that five calls ago? I kindly explained to him that this wasn't a good fit and wished him the best of luck. I can see why their rating are not that great. They installed some gasket fireplace doors. Our basement chimney was causing our house to smell like creosote.
