Our experience started out great--we received a warm welcome at the door and the associate in the shoe department was very helpful in finding the right size for my son. Unfortunately, the trip was ruined by an interaction near the basketball section. My son picked up a small football and tossed it to me from about 5 feet away. Immediately, an employee behind a clothing rack snapped, "Don't throw balls in here." It was so abrasive that my 5-year-old's immediate reaction was, "That was rude." While I understand store safety, a little patience goes a long way in a sports store catering to children. A simple, "Hey guys, let's save the playing for the field!" would have sufficed. Instead, it completely dampened our mood and we won't be rushing back anytime soon.

Not only did we feel welcomed, we were taken care of with genuine kindness and helpful information. I wish I remembered the employee's name, he was the only one there on a Sunday morning, but he was excellent. He helped answer all the questions we had about our fishing trip to Castaic Lake for the first time. He showed us all the recommended baits/lures/tackles, educated us on different casting setups, and took the time to show us how to efficiently and effectively tie everything together. With his recommended products and setup (that he helped put together) on my daughter's toy fishing pole, she caught her first fish (bass!) within 10minutes of being on the boat. At the end of the half-day fishing trip she caught 2 and the wife caught 1 all with the products that he recommended. Not too bad for first timers there on a "slow" day! Thank you Tackle Express! After experiencing a problem with the shoes, I returned to the store expecting REI to honor what they promised. Instead, the store manager, Peter, refused to accept the return, despite the shoes having a legitimate issue and despite the membership guarantees that were explained to me at the time of sale. This experience makes it very clear that REI's "one-year membership guarantee" is misleading and unreliable. What was presented as a benefit turned out to be meaningless when I actually needed it. I feel deceived and misled. This kind of practice damages customer trust and reflects very poorly on store management. Be careful before purchasing an REI membership or relying on their return promises. Based on my experience, the guarantee is not honored consistently, and customers may end up feeling scammed.
