We went on the Mokoli'i (Chinaman's hat) Kayak tour and the snorkel tour. Both were a blast! Our tour guide Tim was awesome! He was super knowledgeable about the area, took plenty of time to make sure our entire group was comfortable with how to kayak, and gave us a ton of great information on the hike to the top! The kayaking was fun and fairly easy; even my parents (who are technically seniors) made it. However, the hike to the top is pretty difficult. There are multiple parts where you are climbing almost straight up the cliff side. Tim took us the safest/easiest way and made sure we were all climbing safely. Make sure you wear lots of sunscreen and reapply!! And bring snacks! Also, the beach you land on is very rocky. There are plenty of rocks to sit on but it's more of an explore the little tide pools and play in the waves beach; not the best for relaxing. We also went with Tim on the snorkeling tour. That was really fun but because of the rough water, we didn't get to see everything. Overall we were super happy with both our experiences! We would definitely return and recommend Active Oahu tours. read more

We had a wonderful time kayaking through the rain forest and then out to the sea. The tour ppl dropped kayaks at a local restaurant and taught us how to tie them on the car. It rained the whole three hours and we had a lot of fun! My two sons, 11 and 15, loved it. read more

Based on all of the reviews I read, I didn't expect chinaman's hat to be the worst kayaking trip I've taken. We got to the location and the water looked choppier than anticipated. Most reviews said that it was the easiest paddle they've done so we figured it would fine even if the weather was less than ideal. Within ten minutes of paddling out, our kayak flipped and my husband lost his go pro. We both cut our feet on coral on the way down. (Our hiking shoes were in the dry bag). We managed to make it to the island, rest a bit, and head back. We were extra cautious on our paddle back, but we saw another kayak in front of us flip over, so it wasn't just us having a rough time on the ocean. I'm sure this excursion would've been fun on a crystal clear non-windy day, but after flipping over, losing the go pro, and getting cut by coral, the rest of our Hawaii trip was downhill since we couldn't get back into the water until the cuts healed. It was also hard walking around Waikiki with lacerations on the bottoms of our feet. It would've been nice to get a heads up call about the weather before making the trek from Waikiki. Do your research about the weather prior to booking and hope the conditions don't change within cancellation policy terms. read more

My girlfriend and I booked the kayak and hike to Mokoli'i (chinaman's hat) and it was incredible. Our guide Tim got out successfully out on the water with very brief instructions and was always available for helpful tips. Once we were back on land he took us on the local us to the path to the top and I was second guessing my rock climbing abilities but we got up there without much trouble at all and the views and definitely well worth it, not everyone goes up to the top. The way back down is definitely a little bit trickier, but Tim got us down slowly and safely. I highly recommend Oahu active tours and Tim as a guide for sure. read more

My wife and I had a very happy and memorable morning kayak tour out to Mokolii (or Chinaman's Hat) thanks to our guides, Spencer and Mercedes, from Active Oahu. Mokolii is across from Kualoa and a great place to visit by kayak. Spencer geared us up, shared interesting information about the area, and guided us as we hiked to the top of Mokolii. While returning, my wife and I managed to overturn our kayak and my GoPro was lost. Mercedes and Spencer went above and beyond to dive and search (for a half hour!) and, yes, returned my camera! Besides their guiding and camera-finding abilities, they are both really kick ass, interesting people to meet. read more

My husband and I were thoroughly disappointed with this tour. We paid over $200 for kayaking and hiking, and felt that the experience did not size up to the amount of money that we paid. First of all, the kayaking tour took us back in a river through trees that grew over the river making it so we had to lay down to get underneath the branches as we went. We barely went anywhere at all, and after not too long it was already over! We spent half the time laying in the kayak and dodging tree branches instead of being able to enjoy views. The hike was the worst part of it all. The area that we went to was very bad. We had to drive our own car to this bad neighborhood, and although the tour guide did warn us not to leave valuables in our car, on the way back down from the hike there was a man BREAKING into cars right in front of our eyes. The hike itself was up a dry creek bed and we were promised to see a waterfall at the top that you had to climb a rope to get to. I guess we should not have expected much and then we would not have been disappointed at the end. But the "waterfall" was only a trickle coming down the side of a hill. Not worth the walk up at all. The rope up the hill looked extremely dangerous and the tour guide himself didn't even attempt to climb it. Although the tour guide said we could go at whatever pace we wanted up the hill, he seemed to be in a big hurry to get us up and down the mountain....and I'm not sure why he was rushing. The only reason I have given a 2 and not a lower Yelp rating is because of how kind the tour guide and his assistant were during the tour. Although we were very upset and disappointed with the tour itself they were very friendly and talkative which was nice. We are trying not to let the experience bring our vacation down but it is hard not to when something so disappointing cost so much money. We just spent the whole morning and afternoon at Kualoa ranch and spent the same amount of money there as we did for this tour. We had a jungle expedition tour, a quad ride through the mountains, & a boat ride. We also were fed a buffet lunch and got to see scenes from various movies. All for the same price that we paid for our hiking and kayaking tour here. Maybe if we would have chosen to do snorkeling or surfing or anything other than what we did our experience would not have been as bad as it was. read more

We kayaked to Chinaman's Hat off the east coast of Oahu near Kualoa Park. Our guide, Alex, was friendly and knowledgeable. The water was calm, and we paddled to the island in under a half hour. Although we were kayaking novices, the going was easy. Once we arrived at the island, we climbed to the top. The views at the top were breathtaking and made the short, but difficult climb worthwhile. Setting up the trip through the Active Oahu office was quick and painless, and Alex arrived to meet us at the agreed upon time. Wonderful experience. I went on a kayaking tour with Spencer and it was awesome! He is very knowledgeable, kind and helpful. He is willing to work with you on your preferences as far as where you kayak in the area. He even took us to some stops with rope swings that we were able to swing off of. The area where we kayaked was not super busy or crowded and we went through a river as well and he open ocean. Definitely worth it. My husband and I were vacationing in Oahu last week and wanted to kayak out to Chinaman's Hat with some of our relatives. We found Active Oahu Tours online and decided to give them a try because their prices were good and they even did free delivery! We called the afternoon before we wanted to rent the kayaks and we were sure that it would be tough to make a last-minute reservation, but that wasn't the case. Mike picked up and was very friendly while helping us reserve our kayaks. He showed up the next morning at Chinaman's hat with the kayaks and helped us get them off the trailer and to the beach nearby. He included seats & life jackets and then gave us some good recommendations on which areas to avoid. Pick-up was easy as well. Two of the small children in our group got tired and wanted to go home earlier than we had anticipated. Mike wasn't supposed to pick up the kayaks until 4:00pm, but we gave him a call around 2:00pm and he came to get them early for us. The kayaks, equipment, recommendations, and service were all great. We'll definitely use Active Oahu Tours next time we're on the island! read more

Mike and Tim are so nice and made it possible for my family to kayak and paddle board on the Kahana River and bay, which we were very eager to do and enjoyed very much. The area is just gorgeous. While the river was not nearly as long as I had imagined, it is really beautiful scenery, and I am very glad we did it. We've seen quite a bit of the island this trip, and for sheer beauty, nothing rivals what we saw in this area of the windward side, including the river scenery. My Husband and I had an absolute blast with Active Oahu Tours when visiting the North Shore for our Honeymoon. We signed up for one surf lesson and ended up spending three days of our vacation with them - surfing, stand up paddling, and cliff jumping. We got to see the local spots of the North Shore we would have missed by staying with the Hotel- associated tours. Spencer is an excellent tour guide, very laid back and flexible, and very professional. He is a terrific surfing instructor. Neither of us had ever surfed before and he had us both standing up and surfing on our second wave! As a complete novice to the sport, I was honestly afraid at first, but after a quick demo on the beach, we were ready to go. He stayed close to our boards, picked out each wave for us, and I felt safe in the water and in control of the board the whole time. The stand up paddling was my personal favorite- we started in a beautiful bay and then headed down an inland fresh water stream that was calm and relaxing, totally surrounded with trees and nature. Our guide pointed out interesting facts about the wildlife and Hawaii. We even got to stop for a gorgeous photo on the way home overlooking the ocean. It was fabulous. Our tour guide was Alex and he is so friendly and helpful in making sure my wife and I were doing ok! He also showed up early at the site to prep the Equipment so we could leave on time which Is very thoughtful and professional. We did the ocean kayak to I think it's call called china mans bend and not only did we get to kayak there but Alex helped us do a hike up to the top and that was actually more fun than the kayaking itself because this hike requires a bit of rock climbing knowledge and as I said already, Alex was there to guide us through the whole thing!!! Went kayaking with my family with two kids, 9 and 12. Spencer was our guide. He was just terrific! Having never kayaked before he made the experience very enjoyable. I booked a yoga session plus kayaking excursion as a birthday surprise, and we had an amazing time at both! The yoga session was very positive -- no mumbo jumbo, no impossible poses -- just a great experience all around. They were very accomodating to both my inexperience and my fiancée's prior practice, challenging us both without ever pushing too hard. And kayaking was fantastic! We really feel that we saw a beautiful and unique side of O'ahu by taking part in this tour. Booking was really easy, getting there was no problem, and we even got offered a ride to lunch once we were done!
