Well worth the drive to get to for the service and experience. Honest, but may need time to ascertain issues. When you see the mechanics and none are the younger generation(Millenial(s), no offense at all), you know they have years working under the hood! Easy to find, parking can be tricky but if you call in ahead of time and make an appointment it goes easier. Large waiting room as is normal with shops. What I like is that they still have signs for you to wear your mask, not they do themselves and have it up for customer comfort. Doing that extra... JD is your guy to talk to. He will be up front, let you know what they find or come across as they work on your ride. I went in for an inspection and left with new bearings, struts, etc... it needed it as the drive post surgery was smooth like she just came off the factory floor. Mind you this was all with being in consistent contact with JD/Avdance Automotive(AA) the whole time, knowing what was going on and being discovered. The car has not run smoother in a while and it's nice to go to a shop where you feel like you're getting what you're truly paying for and not the run around. Had been to AA before at the recommendation of my brother, had a tune up a couple years back and what impressed me was when he came back eith his quote and explained what was actually needed with my car. Went in to have them look at the back which was clunking. They claimed that the spare tire was loose and tightened it. It still clunks and when I asked for further information they said they were too busy. Took my hundred dollars and didn't even look at the swaybar links and bushings like I asked them to. Never going back. They'll take your inspection money and barely look at it. Had a more thorough job done at firestone. read more

I went here because a friend recommended them. My Lexus had an issue that should have been recalled by Lexus but that's a different story. I ended up having to keep my car at this shop for 3 weeks if not longer due to having to wait for Lexus to answer. Ted was super supportive during the process and did not mind answering the questions I had. He was nice enough to let me keep my car there while waiting on Lexus. If I could give this place no star I would. It was recommended by a friend and I have no idea why. This review is so long overdue. Brought my truck in to get fixed. Staff was not friendly. I had to constantly call to get updates. Repairs took over a week longer than told. When I got back my truck it was dirty. Dust all over the inside, dog hair in the back seat, SCRATCHES on random parts of the truck that weren't there. My gas cap was broken! Which causes all my lights to turn on. My BATTERY was not put back correctly and it was loose with knots and screws all over the inside of the hood. AAA had to come when my truck died and showed me what they did. Could have burned my accelerator. When I told them all this they did not care. What an awful place and awful experience. read more

I have been coming here for the past 15 years with my previous Truck which was a Range Rover, I had some issues with my Truck I now have which is a Dodge Ram 1500, I spoke with Ted (Owner) in regards to the problem I was having with grinding knocking noises in the Rear, and as "ALWAYS" the Troubleshooting and Diagnoses were completed, Ted had discovered that it was a Rear Differential failure which he had to order and Replace. Advance Automotive is Definitely by far the most widely recommended Automotive Repair Shop, that I consider Trustworthy and Honest, I would definitely recommend them to more Friends, and Family. Pretty frustrated with my experience with this shop today and feel it's only fair to leave a review as the only reason I chose this shop was based on all the good reviews. Our car wouldn't start up this morning. Hoped it was just the battery but had it brought in to get checked out as we needed a regular service done anyways and were trying to find a regular service shop in our area. Car gets towed in and JD tells us he'll run some diagnostics and let us know. Get a call about an hour later and it's JD telling us that they replaced the battery and unfortunately the alternator was bad and would need to be replaced. I was very surprised considering the car is only 4 years old and hasn't had any other issues. JD quotes me $1,000 and tells me it'll be a few days to get the alternator in. Get off the phone & cry to my husband about the news (I'm 9 mos pregnant) and he reminds me that we have an extended warranty and to call the dealership and check if any alternator is covered. We call and find out it is (great!) and call JD and inform him that we're going to have the car towed to the dealership and will be by to pay for the battery. 30 minutes later, JD calls us and says that they looked at the car some more and there's actually nothing wrong with the alternator (huh?!?!) and that they were able to get the car running after bending one of the fuses on the battery into place (wth?!?!). First of all, we didn't ask him to do anything else on the car and second, it's more than a little peculiar that they magically realized a $1k repair wasn't necessary once another shop was going to look at it. He tried selling me on paying $150 to replace the fuse even! Absolutely unacceptable. I'm not stupid and can't help but think that these guys tried to take advantage of me. Not honest at all. Also, once we got it to the dealership, they confirmed that there's nothing wrong with the alternator and now we are paying $300 to fix the blown fuses and bent fuse that could only have been done while at Advanced Auto. I'm blown away and beyond frustrated by this situation. It's amazing these guys can turn something as simple as a dead battery into this and that they have no issues totally scamming a 9 month pregnant woman out of $1k. read more

Not my usual review, but I came here after going to three different automotive shops to get a quote on my Nissan Pathfinder 2013. All the previous shops quoted me rates I could not afford and were not willing to work with me. I called to get a quote here at Advance Automotive and was told to bring in the car for inspection. I told the owner Jay D the budget I was working with and he was able to work with it. They let me know through every stage what they were working on and when should I expect to pick up my vehicle. There was a little incident and they called as soon as it happened and informed me that my pickup time would be postponed. Which I was totally fine with because I rather be in the loop than out of it and wondering when I would have a car again. When I picked up the vehicle the technician (I think his name is Tony) made sure to show me exactly what was changed in the new engine and the old one. They really took care of me and made sure that my vehicle was in good condition to drive home. I would definitely come back here!!!! read more

Sometimes dealerships take several days to get a car fixed but with Advance Automotive, they do repairs so quickly AND with a lot of care. It was a Friday night, about 5:45 p.m., and we had headed out to eat at Oscar's. As we were driving westbound on Balboa approaching Convoy, my Saab's battery light when on and the car started seizing up. I immediately pulled a U-turn hoping to get back home quickly, but the car began to die out. As I was in the middle of the road, I quickly looked for a driveway that I could coast into. I pulled into the nearest one, which belonged to AA. They were just about to close. I nervously asked them to take a look at my car and they said they couldn't get to it until tomorrow, but that they would take it into the garage now. Five guys, who were supposed to have been heading home by now, pushed it 100 ft. or so. So basically I was at their disposal. They pushed the car into their garage and we got a ride to Oscar's (heck no we're not just going to go home, we're talking about Oscar's fish tacos). Needless to say, I was concerned about this whole thing. Indeed, I had just moved to San Diego and had not yet found a mechanic. Next day, I called in, spoke to JD, who is the main man, and as you car-savvy guys can guess, it was the alternator. Aside from the alternator, they found some other things, such as an oil leak (which I knew was there; it had sprung up after the trip). Moreover, because the Saab had 155K on it, the timing belt needed to be replaced (and concurrently the water pump, etc.). I was planning to do this, but I was still trying to find a trustworthy mechanic to do this big -- and expensive -- job. I knew right away that JD was trustworthy and serious about doing a good job for me. I was concerned because I didn't know a lick about this place and Saabs are finicky vehicles. But he assuaged my concerns almost right away. As a result, I basically told him replace whatever he thinks needs to be replaced as part of the vehicle's routine maintenance. JD explained step-by-step what needed to be replaced as well as the cost for each item. He was serious about making it as affordable as possible. During the course of the repairs / replacements, a couple of issues popped up (for example, the rebuilt alternator didn't work, so we had to quickly order a new one), and I won't divulge the considerations he cut for me, but I will say that he was beyond helpful and extremely generous. In short, I got, inter alia, new plugs, fixed oil leak, new battery, new timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, and other items. I was extremely pleased with the price and the result. Simply stated, Advance Automotive is a fantastic shop, and they have a committed and loyal customer in me. I will now only have them service my Saab, including regular oil changes. I highly recommend JD and the crew. They are competent, fair, trustworthy, and down-to-earth. Even sitting in the waiting area and observing them interacting with other customers, I could tell they they treat every one with respect, fairness, and straight-up honesty. If you are looking for a new mechanic or have just moved to the area, I can say with the confidence of someone who is super picky about their car that Advance Automotive is excellent. read more
