We decided on conscious sedation to replace two crowns, and it was an incredibly relieving experience. Although I was technically awake, I don't remember any of the procedure at all--which was exactly what I needed. The entire process was managed smoothly and professionally from beginning to end. For example, last year I had a Crown inserted and after i had some pain. I went back and she had to even my bite out and the pain left. She didn't charge me for the follow-up plus scheduled another follow-up in case it didn't alleviate the problem. The staff are very nice and considerate to your apprehensiveness to visit a dentist. They offer you bottled water or coffee as you enter. They also greet you with the name you wish to be called. They also work with your insurance provider the best they can and go over costs before starting. I sort of hate the xray part when they put the shield in your mouth. But Beto the xray tech goes slow and tries to allieviate your uncomfortableness. The hygentists that work with Dr. Cua are friendly and are caring. Helping you setup the TV to watch and listen to while they work away. Also giving you a pillow and leg rest if you want. They work well with Dr. Cua as scrapes off the plaque and calcium build-up. Keeping your mouth rinsed and clean. They then polish after Dr. Cua finishes. Although I don't love visiting the dentist. I do love my experience at Perch Dentistry with Dr. Cua and her staff. By the way I had no cavities on this visit and my gums are looking much healthier! A few months ago, I had see a dentist up in New York while on a work assignment. She told me I needed a filling on a tooth and not to wait. So when I got back to Austin, my wife booked appointments for both of us at the Swish office we have visited in the past couple of years. I shared with Swish I was told to see a dentist soon. Well trust me, that the worse thing I could have said. Now all of a sudden everyone jumps into action mode, taking all new x rays and cbct (which is a fancy X-ray). I looked it up. Their findings were alarming. I now needed 3 crowns and the fillings that go under the crowns plus 3 additional fillings. Why didn't the other dentist in NY say anything to me about all these problems? On my wife, she suddenly needs a deep cleaning and possibly some fillings redone because they are leaching.(their words). They tried to force us to schedule immediately and wanted to start my wife's deep cleaning that very day. We told them that we both had to return to work but then we were told they would not have another appointment available for several weeks to do a deep cleaning. We left there unsettled and I contacted a friend of mine who has a brother that is a dentist. I sent him a copy of the X-rays and he said he couldn't see anything other than the 1 tooth that needed just a filling. My wife went to another dentist and was told she only needed a basic filling. Who are these people? Why would they attempt to do such aggressive dentistry if it doesn't exist?

After the exam, I was informed that I needed several cavities addressed. That part wasn't surprising. What was surprising was the financial process that followed. The conversation felt less like a healthcare discussion and more like sitting across from a finance manager at a car dealership--focused heavily on cost breakdowns and payment structure rather than care. The most concerning part: I was told I needed to pay a $100 deposit just to schedule the procedure. While I understand deposits in certain contexts, this felt out of place in a healthcare setting. Patients are already committing to treatment and cost--adding a pay-to-book requirement creates an unnecessary barrier and, frankly, erodes trust. Yes, the deposit is applied toward the final bill, but that doesn't change the principle. Patients shouldn't feel like they're paying for access to care. Healthcare--especially dentistry--relies on trust, transparency, and patient-first thinking. This experience leaned too far in the direction of financial policy over patient care. If you're exploring dental providers, I'd encourage you to ask upfront about payment practices and find an office whose approach aligns with your expectations. There are plenty of great providers out there who prioritize patient experience alongside clinical care. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them.
