Correen was a delight to work with. When my father passed in 2022 (in Tennessee), we had him placed in a wooden urn. We were on the waitlist for Arlington National Cemetery. When we found out that he would be buried instead of in a niche, we decided to provide his ashes more protection against the elements. From the moment I talked to Coreen, I knew I could trust her to help with our concerns. She helped me pick out a marble urn and had it engraved. I just want to let everyone know how very personal and professional Advent is. We worked with Coreen Nottingham who helped our family twice this year. First for my Mom's cremation and memorial early in the year and second for my Dad's recent cremation and supporting us with the documents we need to travel with his and my Mom's ashes. It has been a very hard year for us to say the least but Coreen and her team made things very straightforward and understandable for us which took a lot off our shoulders. The Advent memorial room and facilities are intimate, private and a beautiful setting. We could bring in food and snacks to share with friends and family who attended the memorial. Based on great reviews, and reasonable prices, we decided to use Advent Funeral Services to prepay for my mother's funeral. Her health had been in a state of decline for years, due to Alzheimer's. We wanted a nice but fairly basic family funeral, and didn't want to be pressured into buying more than we needed. I was very happy with the choices and options provided by Advent Funeral Services. There was absolutely no pressure, and the prices were much better than another funeral home we were considering. When my mother passed away recently, there were far less decisions to be made with the prepaid funeral. The Advent staff (Charles, Wayne, Steve, Matt, Dana) helped coordinate with the florist, cemetery, and priest. They were always kind and considerate, and quick to respond to my questions and concerns. Dana gave me great advice on how to choose clothing, jewelry and shoes for my mother. After Advent returned our relative's urn, ashes and folded American flag to me, we waited 10 months for the Arlington Cemetery service to be scheduled. After my husband passed away, I was looking for a funeral home to help with cremation. He passed in Virginia but we live in the district. After making some calls, I decided to use Advent. Every single person I talked to was helpful, kind and knowledgeable. They took great care with my husband and with us. Dana, our point person, was easy to talk to and replied to all additional inquiries quickly. We did have a viewing as well and their facility is lovely. Even after everything, they also were able to make arrangements for me to also bring my husband's ashes home in time for Christmas - something I didn't know would be possible and didn't know it would bring me comfort. Review of Advent Funeral and Cremation Services From a NW DC resident When my husband passed away unexpectedly, my daughter took on the job of comparing funeral services that had high marks from Consumers' Checkbook. She recommended Advent because we would save a thousand dollars with them and because they, unlike the rest of the companies, did not pile on charges with extra services. More on that later. It was clear from our first meeting with Advent personnel, in their attractive and convenient location, that we were in capable, professional hands. My husband died Christmas eve and they warned us that obtaining a death certificate over the holidays would be a slow process and assured us they would take care of everything from communicating with the hospital, bringing the remains to their location to securing the death certificates. I'm sure this is standard, but this is a whole new world to deal with when you are in shock over a great loss. Advent personnel know how to communicate and reassure and took over the daunting (to me) process of dealing with those steps. I imagine that funeral homes are unfairly exaggerated when they are depicted in film. We experienced no raised eyebrow when we selected a cardboard casket for the cremation. We looked at but were under no pressure or encouragement to select urns from them, which we did not. Quite the contrary, Advent was all about service and divided the ashes and filled the urns we delivered at no extra cost. I should also add that we did not require any special memorial or obituary services. We were bare bones and they treated us wonderfully. After my daughter conducted initial interviews with the various funeral services, I interviewed two that were move convenient to our NW DC home. Even though we chose cremation, I wanted to offer viewing to any members of our large family who might have wanted to say goodbye. The Jewish home in Takoma Park does not offer viewings, and the home in Georgetown requires embalming for viewings. As it turned out none of the children wanted to avail themselves of this kind of farewell. Advent Services called me when they had picked up my husband's body and I was required by law to identify him. They told me I could make the identification from a photo, but I wanted to see him. My last memory of him was at the emergency room with an intubation tube still holding his mouth open. Advent had closed his mouth and eyes, and he looked so restful and well cared for that I will be forever grateful to them. This last image was welcome and comforting after the invasiveness of the emergency room. Finally, because I had accompanied the daughters of a close friend to her cremation and was shocked by the industrial, uncomfortable surroundings (no seating and with the appearance of an auto repair garage), I had asked my daughter to inquire about the facilities for cremation. Once again, Advent was the only one of the top tier that had a comfortable room for mourners who wish to be present for cremation. Zoning laws limit where cremations can occur, so it was a drive, but well worth it to be there in comfort for the beginning of the cremation process. Matt from Advent was our major contact and he made the experience comforting, personal and professional. I highly recommend Advent for as good an experience as one can hope for during a sorrowful time, and for going above and beyond what we expected in helping us through this process. At the first funeral home we were using, had trouble finding a casket that fit with the wishes of our deceased family member. We came to Advent to see if they had other options, and Matthew spent the better part of an hour showing us choices in other catalogs, and we ended up finding a perfect choice. Funerals are extremely emotional not only due to your love for the deceased but due to the family relationships which can be strained. In our case that was very true. I have been fortunate to know and be a frequent customer of Advent. They brought much relief to my family after we checked with many other service providers. We were able to customize services that fit the needs of two family members on different occasions, and being able to plan and prepare prior to death events was valuable beyond belief. Never thought I would be writing a review for a funeral home, but the level of care, compassion and personal attention my family received was more than worthy of a good review. My family and friends have used Advent for a number of services and they continue to treat us like family. Their high level of customer service never ceases to amaze me. We originally found Advent when looking for an independent funeral home. Too many bad experiences with some large, corporate owned funeral homes. Melanie, the owner has personally been involved with every service. In February we had to deal with perhaps the most difficult service when we lost our Mom. The 1st person I called was Melanie. She immediately took charge and coordinated the services with her team Steve and Matt. They knew this one was a tough one for my family and they displayed true compassion, patience, caring and personal attention for every phase of the service. They are not the type of funeral home that tries to take advantage of you when you are grieving. They took their time, did not rush, or pressure us and listened to our needs and requests. It's been a couple of month's since the service and just last week Melanie reached out to me to ask how we were all doing. This is true compassion. My family and I are truly grateful to Melanie, Steve, Matt, and Dana for all their professional assistance. I would recommend them highly when the time of need happens to come along. read more
