When my mother was put into Comfort Care, I had researched cremation services and pretty much knew what I wanted before I interviewed (in person) four crematories/funeral homes. Two of them failed to disclose all their fees until I asked additional questions (based on my research), one of them was double the price of the other three, and the fourth one was Direct Cremation Services. I met with a gentleman named Kip, who didn't try to upsell me, and gave me a package that met my requests. The costs were significantly lower than the other three places. He assured me that Direct Cremation Services would take care of everything, and explained both the logistical process and the paperwork/payment process. When my mother passed away, on a weekend, Kip returned my (notification) call, emailed me the link to take care of the documents, and immediately send his team out to transport my mother's remains. He told me the paperwork could wait until Monday. Thereafter, everything went as promised, and I picked up my mother's "cremains" yesterday. An unbelievably smooth process during a difficult time. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

I chose Direct Cremation because of all of the positive reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was very different from what I read. Having never been through the experience of managing the passing of a loved one, I didn't know what to expect. I arranged for DC to provide services. A few days later I bunch of emails with tasks assigned out of the blue. I called to ask about them and was directed to my funeral director who told me those were optional. A couple days later I got a contract and a payment link. Again, I called to question and let the director know we wanted to have an urn for the ashes and that I needed everything shipped to me. Shortly after, I got a new contract and a new payment link. Days passed and I called again to get status. Still waiting. A few days later, I called again. Should be done by end of week. See a pattern? No contacts by DC. Every call was made by me. The end of the week came and I finally got a call. My loved one was ready to be picked up. Wait, what? I paid for shipping. " Oh yeah, that's what I meant". Really?? Anyway, the company provided the service I paid for but communication was non existent. I don't think I ever got a "sorry for your loss" from our funeral director. Given the industry the operate in, I would have expected a little more. read more

If I could give this company a minus score I would and I would urge you to thoroughly research them before you entrust a loved one to them. This company is totally unprofessional , impersonal and will treat your family and your loved one with utter indifference. My father was not cremated until the 11th day and during that period nobody bothered to contact me and inform me on what the status was. Supposedly you have a funeral director assigned to you, but this person never contacted me once.; instead, I had to keep calling and spoke to an office administrator who was actually quite kind. Unfortunately, I don't know if she relayed my extreme unhappiness with the lack of information or contact from anyone because nobody followed up with me after each of my calls. Lastly, I had ordered an urn from their website and when I received it, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was about 2 inches tall and wouldn't fit the ashes of a hamster. Of course the website did not specify sizes so who could've imagined that you were buying a toy sized urn. This company fails miserably to provide a service which requires a little more compassion and dignity towards our loved ones who we have entrusted them with. read more

Wish I could give negative stars. We were treated poorly (couple of times on the phone). Not so much as a sorry for your loss. One has to call and leave a message and then one gets a call back. Always. They seem like they are doing you a favor by talking to you. Very curt responses. Also they did not tell us they are closed over the weekend. No activity. Not a big deal in our case but should have led with that when we asked about timeline. We were dealing with loss for the first time and naturally didn't know all the ins and outs but as is typical for us we had researched the website and had the couple of follow-up questions we had, ready. A close friend's mother passed, the family contacted this company in Chantilly, VA by recommendation. The graveside services were 10am and the deceased was not at the cemetery. When first contacted was told (a few minutes after 10am) the hearse was on the way, delayed in traffic. When called again was told they had not left yet, and the casket chosen was not in stock. When the family chose the casket, was told it was in stock. After several conversations with the Cemetery Directors, Direct Cremation in Chantilly, VA and the family, was told her mother would be there around 2pm in a different casket than chosen. Direct Cremation in Chantilly would not take ownership of the huge mistake and lack of communication. The services which the family paid for was not provided as promised. Worst of all had no compassion to the family. read more

I can't say enough good things about this company. My mother recently died and I'd never had to arrange anything like this before. Luckily, hospice referred me to DCSV. Not only are their prices VERY reasonable, but they communicated very clearly to me what I needed to do. Everything was handled by phone and e-mail. Kip Austin and Tiffany Rahl were both SO patient with all my questions! Even when I changed my mind at the last minute and asked them to deliver my mom's ashes to my home (because I was trying to avoid an emotion trip out to and back from Chantilly), they were just super nice about it and got me on the schedule for the very next day's delivery! Of course NO ONE wants to face the death of a loved one, but DCSV went above and beyond to make this process as painless as possible. I am beyond grateful for how they handled everything. read more

My wife passed away suddenly on Nov 4. Fortunately my pastor arrived very soon after she passed. I had obviously not been prepared for this. I had used a funeral home when my mother passed but he informed me that they had been acquired by a large corporation. He asked if I had heard about Direct Cremations. I had not but he explained that they offer as much or as little as you need. He made the initial call and before I knew it - Direct Cremations took over. Kip called me and outlined what they do and took me step by step through the process. He was very informative and professional. I have only positive things to say about my experience with DCSV. My father recently passed away, and as you can imagine this was a difficult time for my family, but on top of that things have been much more complex with COVID 19. We worked with JR from start to finish and he's literally a saint... He was compassionate, thoughtful, thorough, and put our minds at ease. We did not know whether we could even have something for my dad since everyday there were added state restrictions that were out of all of our control. Luckily we were able to have a very small send off. JR explained everything to me over the phone, he was quick to respond to emails, looked over the certificate a few times, was clear in costs, never tried to sell us anything else, and even took the time to explain things regarding Social Security. Met him in person on a Wednesday to answer any questions, gave us a tour, and explained how things would go on Friday. The day came, and he was VERY flexible, and although the service was short as planned, he let my mom and I spend a few extra minutes with dad. Dad's send off was more than we expected, JR and the rest of the team were patient with us, and I hope dad is at peace now. During these times, what my family needed was kindness, empathy, and understanding, which is what JR was able to provide us - Thank You! read more

Correspondence with the team here was fine. It wasn't as stellar as I thought it would be based on the reviews I read, but we chose this place because my cousin used them for my uncles viewing and said coordinating everything was a seamless experience for him. This was also true for us for the most part, but we decided to have both the viewing and service here, which I absolutely do not recommend. The viewing/service room does not have a closed ceiling and the walls are thin, so sound travels very easily. During my mothers service, the employees were incredibly rude and loud. During my brothers eulogy and mine, you could hear employees laughing and talking, which was mind blowingly unprofessional. I saw several people walk out to ask them to be quiet and respectful of our service. You can also hear conversations if people come in to talk to the receptionists outside. Of course the manager apologized but what is that going to do after the fact? I try not to think about it because getting upset about it does nothing to change what already happened. But if I had to do it all over again, I would have rather done it at a church. I chose to have it at dcs for convenience factor and because I didn't want people to have to travel to two different locations, but I wish I had done that so that my mother could have had a quiet and peaceful viewing/service. The employees can obviously hear us giving the eulogy because we were speaking on microphones and we could hear them clearly when they didn't even have mics, so it's just so infuriating that they would be so loud and not mindful of what was going on. They were not speaking at normal voice levels and even if they were, they should have still been mindful of the fact that a service was going on and try their best to keep noise to a minimum. This was NOT the case at all. There was no respect or care for our mothers service. read more

We had a sudden unexpected death in our family and were totally unprepared to need the services of DCSV. The shock of the situation was compounded by COVID-19 restrictions. However, our interaction with DCSV from the time we first walked through their front door, to the visitation time we had, receiving the cremains back from them and follow up actions with the Commonwealth of VA were handled with grace, compassion, professionalism and never just a "business as usual" type of attitude. The unethical practices of this crematorium service are disturbing. Instead of owning mistakes, it tries to cover them up. Initially, owner Bill's lengthy Yelp response referred to my mother's ashes--very disturbing considering that my mother is alive and well! Makes me wonder: WHOSE ASHES DO I HAVE??? When I updated my review, referring to this horrible parental mix-up (see below) there was no acknowledgement or apology, instead the owner tried to cover up his own confusion by simply editing his initial reply, changing all mention of "mother" to "father." (I have a screenshot of his unaltered response--I loathe deception.) Trust me, you do NOT need this added trauma when a loved one dies. Pick another crematorium!!! My shocked initial response: Of course I never contacted you about my mother's cremation...because SHE'S STILL ALIVE! Apparently you don't even know who you've cremated. Wow, now I really wonder whose ashes I have in my urn. :( read more

They have been fine to deal with except their hours. A business open to the public needs to be open more than 9-5 Monday- Friday. I have already lost so much time from work due to my mothers illness and death l, that I am out of leave. I think they should be open later in the day or Saturday mornings at the very least. Our memorial service went on a couple hours longer than expected due to so many people, but they gladly stayed late until the service was over. It is very sad and difficult time when you lose  mom. First time in my life  I had to deal with such an event and wasn't sure  what is the next step needs to be done, what paperwork needs to be collected, who needs to be notified. But I was amazed how smooth entire process took because of continuous and instantaneous support by JR. He clarified every steps needs to done, what paperwork work is required and more. Even after a month and a half when I called and spoke with JR regarding additional documents I needed for my mom, he went above and beyond to collect and provide those in expedited manner!! Not too unexpectedly, my very aged MIL passed away. I touched base with the director, Bill McDonough, when I knew time was short. My MIL wanted a simple, speedy cremation with a minimum of fuss. Bill answered my questions about the paperwork and the process so that I could download the forms and be ready to go. Then, when she passed, DCS quickly dispatched a gentleman to retrieve her remains. His demeanor was wonderful! What a great employee. So kind and thoughtful. Thanks to earlier preparation, the paperwork was quick and he was on his way. The apprentice director, Mr. Alvarez was in touch via phone and email regularly and kept things moving along. Within 3 business days (over a holiday weekend no less!), the entire process was wrapped up. Even the gentleman who delivered the cremains was outstanding and a pleasure to work with. If you want to deal with kind, efficient personnel, who will get the job done quickly for a reasonable price, please don't hesitate to call DCS.
