I lost my husband in December 2019 and searched for a funeral director that would offer personalized service. I can't imagine a better experience than I had with Karyn Lord at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home. From the first moment we met, I could tell that I wasn't just another client. Karyn and the rest of the team went out of their way to fulfill my requests quickly and elegantly. Even when we had many more mourners than anticipated they handled my requests with grace. Months after the service the staff has stayed in touch with me and offered any assistance needed, even during the pandemic. I am a journalist and had written about funeral services for years. Sadly, I've also lost several members of my family. I can't recommend Karyn Lord or Everly Wheatley Funeral Home highly enough. read more

When my Mom died at the age of 96, I knew she wanted Everly-Wheatley to handle her viewing and coordination of burial and memorial service. Just as they did for my dad 11 years earlier, and for my grandparents and great grandparents. I met with Jim Zalewski the afternoon of her death, and immediately knew Mom was in the best of hands. Jim took over ordering the death certificates (we received in 10 days), calling cemetery and church. Suddenly I was in the back of a Bentley, driven with care and comfort to deal with all the details of the week to come. He placed The Washington Post obit in the nick of time for the Sunday paper, produced the video shown in both rooms of the viewing, and was there for the internment, even producing a perfect cloudless mild day in February. Only criticism is the DVD is out of date and it would have been better to do video in a jpeg format for wide distribution. Couldn't recommend EW more highly. read more

Everly Wheatley is an OUTSTANDING funeral home. They could NOT have done a better job with my Mom's recent funeral. We dealt with both Brian and Johann. They couldn't have been nicer. They do not push unnecessary extras on you. They are helpful in the extreme even when you change your mind or want to add something extra. My Mom looked BEAUTIFUL, and if you've ever been to a funeral, you know that is not always the case. The room was set up so nicely. They did everything right at the visitation, the funeral (which was at a church) and the burial itself (at a cemetary). Really, I cannot say enough about these people. And the facility itself is first class with lots of parking. I truly loved these people. I write this with absolutely no reservations. Our experience was first class all the way! read more

We have dealt with Everly Wheatley multiple times on a business basis as one of their preferred vendors. On each occasion we have had the same experience. Everly Wheatley is not the typical funeral home. The atmosphere is not what you would expect. The facility is now beautiful and up to date. The staff attitudes are always professional and caring. Even when families are not around just the attitudes from the staff are positive and professional. You get the impression that they really like working there and working together. Our company has worked in many commercial environments and many other funeral homes as well. As crazy as it may sound our employees, as well as myself as the business owner always enjoy working with the the entire staff at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home. I would recommend them highly based on my personal family experience in a time of need and I would say as well that they would be a great client for any business who could work with them on a professional level. All business's have slogans and catch lines but you come away from Everly Wheatley feeling "Everly Truly Does Care". I have seen them treat families with dignity, respect and compassion and we have always been treated great as one of their vendors. read more

I cannot praise Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home (Alexandria VA) enough regarding their professionalism, their warm and caring demeanor and their ability to remain supportive when additional requests are presented just prior to... or even during the viewing of a deceased family member. From the first meeting with the staff - to the day of the wake, the staff was always mindful of the importance that a solum and dignified viewing was to my mother-in-law when my father-in-law passed. When the viewing turned into a family reunion with food and drink, they didn't bat an eye - but rather designated an appropriate area for that social element while maintaining the solemnity of viewing. When you need the services of a funeral director and a venue to conduct the final tribute to a loved one, I hope you will consider Everly-Wheatley as an excellent choice for that important ceremony. read more

My family has always used Everly-Wheatley so when my mother died in January it never entered my mind to "comparison shop." I assumed their charges were reasonable. I assumed wrong. We had the most basic services -- fetch the body, cremate it and provide us with the ashes and death certificates in a timely manner. For this (and the things they required as part of this) we paid within $100 of $5000. A quick comparison on Google will tell you this is out of line. The they took ten days to cremate, did not send the death certificates (for which we paid $20 apiece) with the ashes when we picked them up, and even when we did go to get them, it was less then the number ordered. They did not offer anything like "service." While the personnel were without exception polite, we were left with a feeling of being overcharged and under-serviced. I would not recommend Everly-Wheatley to anyone. read more

If I could give them no stars I would. My grandmother had paid for her funeral years ago. The day we went in the the lady show us everything and it was all paid for. The day of the service, to start the person that was opening was running behind so we had to stand outside in the cold. Then went my grandmother was bought out she looked awful with the way they put the makeup on her and my sister said something to them about the red lipstick they used. The worst part was when they pulled my mother and sister into another room a few minutes before the service to tell them that my grandmother had cashed out her funeral services years ago and they needed money. How the hell do you wait until a few minutes before the service to tell a family this. You show them one thing 4 days before then a few minutes before the service you tell them you now owe money. I would never recommend them. read more

We have used these folks in the past-- most recently was 15 years ago, though, and clearly things have changed. We met with them on Sunday afternoon -- my Mom passed away Saturday morning--but couldn't get our arrangements finalized until late Tuesday. We were responsible for coming up with solutions for every problem. Trying to work out a schedule, they seemed to lack any sense of urgency regarding finalizing the plan. In the end, we were only able to schedule the arrangements for Friday/ Saturday. Could it have been sooner? Maybe not. We selected a casket, but that was not they decided to use-- they were so sorry, but by then it was too late. They offered no help with most of the details involved. In fact, they didn't even list the arrangements on their website until we called to insist. Overall, for the exorbitant cost involved ($20K) and the fact that once you choose them you're stuck with whatever they choose to give you (and they are CLEARLY aware of this fact and take full advantage of it) I'd consider going elsewhere if I were you. Interacting with a funeral home and the mortician in particular is one of the most personal interactions one experiences with a stranger. I was so grateful Karyn took care of my husband who died unexpectedly. She only offered what we needed and kept the cost reasonable. She personally transported him and cleaned him up. I was comforted at how handsome and peaceful he looked. She then worked miracles over a weekend to get his death certificate signed and approval from the medical examiner to cremate him in time for the service. She followed through on everything she promised, and I did not experience any undue stress. She is a very kind person. I highly recommend Everly-Wheatley. read more

My review of Everly-Wheatley is mixed. On a positive note, the minister who delivered the service gave an original and engaging service; he was excellent. He greeted our family with compassion and warmth. The facilities are very nice and comfortable. But what was upsetting was the fact that the "intern" placed the wrong date and time for the memorial service on the guestbook site. I did not detect the error until the evening prior to the service; I assumed that competent funeral home employees would, at the very least, strive for accuracy, especially as the date and time of a memorial service are rather important. As soon I saw the mistake, I called the 24 hour line and spoke with the night receptionist at 12 am, requesting that the mistake be corrected and that I receive a return phone call the next morning. I left two contact numbers with her. I explained that my deceased family member had devoted 47 years to public service, and that one of the ways we could communicate with former colleagues and students was through the funeral home's website. But by 1 pm, just 3 hours before the service, the error was still not corrected, and I had not received a phone call, reassuring me that the error had been fixed. At the funeral home, I spoke with this intern, expressing my disappointment that inaccurate information had been published . Her reply was that she had corrected it 4 times, and the fault lay with the computer, which repeatedly reversed her corrections. She "didn't know why." She did not accept responsibility; she did not apologize. If she had apologized and admitted her mistake, that gesture would have made all difference. In addition, my son left the chapel several times and noted that this same intern and other staff were gossiping and careless with their remarks. This loss felt like an amputation. I wish these employees were empathetic with loss. Why couldn't they check on family members? Why couldn't they be kind and empathetic? Why couldn't they be respectful? The facilities are very nice in the chapel and room areas. But I would not recommend this facility due to the insensitivity, incompetence and immaturity of unsupervised employees with little leadership who made a very stressful time unnecessarily painful. read more

Every-Wheatley handled the memorial and cremation services for a loved one who died unexpectedly and left little in the way of last wishes. Jennifer Snodgrass, the manager at Everly, was incredibly kind, compassionate, patient, and helpful during a terrible time. She never rushed us, she was prompt in replying to questions via phone and email, and she explained everything thoroughly and in a caring manner, offering advice when asked and listening attentively. The chapel was set up exactly as requested on the day of the service, and we were invited to come as early as we liked to arrange the flowers and photos. Jennifer brought in extra tables and pedestals and even helped us arrange the flowers tastefully. A member of her staff collected the cards from the flower arrangements and noted on the back of each card which arrangement it had come from; this really helped when we were writing thank-you notes. After the service, we were given plenty of time to pack up at our own pace and to visit with friends and family. I have attended 3 funerals at Beverly Wheatley in the last 18 mos. Each one was worse than then the last.Last year a friend had a brain aneurysm and her skull was crushed on the right side with matted blood still on her hair.The staff (if you can find them) were rude and uncaring.A person named April violated confidentiality by discussing private conversations with the deceased family. She also lied about how I could obtain a death certificate.Last week there was a viewing only. Other were 2 small setee couches and 2 folding chairs .The deceased body looked like a clown. It looked like 5 pounds of wax over his face. His moustache shaved with each side going in a different direction. His hands were filthy it looked as though his hands had been soaked in motor oil.This funeral home was originally a family business with a good reputation. Since it was bought out by a large company.Its gone down hill ever since.I wouldn't reccomend this business to my worse enemy.They are a greedy company who takes advantage of grieving families. Run don't walk away from this disgusting funeral home.Help spread the word...Eveverly Wheatly funeral home isn't fit for a rat!!! read more
