This was my 3rd year down the Upper. I swear they are always making it better every year! The guides are great! The service is great! The facilities are so much nicer then others! We spent two nights here for my cousins wedding. We stayed In a deluxe four bedroom cabin with our extended family and it was complete with a hot tub. The cabin was in perfect condition and it was spacious. Ten of us went on the Timber trek ropes course with zip lines and obstacles. The obstacle course was amazing and the staff was terrific and helpful. We ate at Chetty's Pub even though the service was slow the staff was nice to our large family. The grounds were massive with corn-hole, Places to hang out and a well maintained pool and a great play ground for kids ages 2-12. But the reason we were at the resort in the first place was for a wedding. It was one of the best places for a wedding that I've seen. The view was amazing and the scenery was breathtaking. It was the best place for a wedding I hope to come back and use the rest of the Amenities. read more

We were looking for a spot we could go as a family to get away during the pandemic summer and still be socially distant. AOTG fit the bill. Lots of housing options from camping, rustic cabins to deluxe cabins with hot tubs. Several restaurants on site that are probably great in non-pandemic but there's only one (Smokey's) serving now - mostly takeout but menu was expansive and food wasn't bad. But you go for the activities and they are great - rafting on the New River. Our guide was young but he knew the river really well and we were in good hands. Rapids are Class 2-5 and amazing. The team has fun and it was an unforgettable afternoon. Also several zip lines, a ropes course that has 6 different sections of various degrees of difficulty - guides are great with children and adults (of all sizes). Flat water and river kayaking, paddle boarding, mountain biking. Some really beautiful hikes along the Gorge that are a short drive away. Great place to get away, have fun & relax. read more

Super fun! I've gone rafting in other states but Adventures on the Gorge is definitely my favorite. Our rafting guide, Zach, was THE best! He told us some history along the river while also spitting out some super corny jokes! And I don't want to brag but I think he knew the most because he knew all these little tricks that just pushed the experience to a whole new level. There was also a girl, Vivian, who took pictures and videos of all the rafts so that was great for capturing fun times. They also had showers for afterwards with hot water which, let me tell you, feels great after swimming in the New River. This is our second time white water rafting with Adventures on the Gorge and it only gets better! So much fun! Went on the upper New River for half a day and experienced 2 class V rapids and plenty of class I-IV rapids. We had the pleasure of Zach as our Raft Guide and he literally put a spin on everything! He had funny jokes, lots of insight on history of the river and ridges, very knowledgeable of the river and different rapids. We went down a couple rapids backwards and did a couple spins. Had a blast! I would highly recommend them! As a side note: they have camping, cabins, paint balling, ziplining, rock climbing, any outdoor adventure, they have it! read more

They do a very good job at what they do. There are many many options at their base camp: rafting, zip line, tree courses, ATV, mountain biking, paint ball, etc. They have a camp grounds, restaurants and cabins to rent. Clearly, they are trying to capture every outdoor vacation dollar in WV. Their rafting is first rate: I rafted with them many times in the early and mid 90's when they were just the Rivermen. Since that time, there has been a massive consolidation in rafting companies, with a bunch of of the big outfits being brought together under one company: Adventures on the Gorge. The camp has beautiful log buildings, nice changing and bathroom facilities and a large indoor gathering area where you check in, gather for trips and then return to after the trip where they try and sell you a video of your adventure. I did not stay at the camp: it was $99 to stay in a cabin with no bathroom, and 10 minutes away you can get a basic hotel room for the same money. If you are with a big group it might be fun to do the whole outdoors thing in their lodging. The food in their restaurants, according to Yelpers and my limited tasting is you can do better in downtown Fayetteville: The Secret Sandwich Society is simply outstanding. Their raft guides are first rate. They tend to hype up the danger to make it more exciting, but they really deliver the action in that they know the rivers so well that they steer ( by having your paddle) to the best action. They are also very funny, with a stable of West Virginia, hillbilly, and rafting jokes they bring out all through the trip. They deserve your tips. I rafted the upper and lower New River one day, and the lower the next. The full day trip puts in far up river and is slow the first part of the day. After you practice and get used to things you have a lunch. Next comes the lower section, and that is where the action happens. Depending on the water level, the rafting can be fast, intense and even toss you out of the boat fun. Make no mistake, you are working with the others to drive the boat to the safe and action packed water. If you want just the action, you can do the 1/2 day lower river. The problem is if you are there for the rest of the day there is not much else to do, other than more outdoor action, like zip lines. Which brings me to the other issue: none of this is inexpensive. For all they offer, this is a place where you can give your Visa card a ride. They do offer discounts once you are there: we got 20% off our second day when we booked it after our first ride. So, bring your wallet and come ready for action. read more

I rode that raft like it ain't nobody's business. For serious. John C was our guide and he's a real stand-up guy who knows what's what. I can still hear him yelling "GO GO GO!" in my dreams as we cruise down Pure Screaming Hell (the last rapids of the Middle/Lower Gauley - Class V) and into the Hell Hole. I was right at the front of my raft and looked into the Hell Hole with my eyes just about as wide as the hole itself. We caught a surf, rotated 180 degrees, and then literally flipped vertically, I flew overboard, got kicked around under the raft, and found myself a good ways away from everything when all was said and done. Hope the fish had a camera, though, cuz I was still smiling the entire time. Now THAT'S what I signed up for. As far as gear for this time of the year goes (late September), I'd recommend both the wetsuit and a splash jacket, which are available for rent when you get there. I was really comfortable, but some of the not-so-insulated folks in my group were still a little chilly, so if you have a fleece jacket, you may want that to wear under the splash jacket as well. As Katie Y recommended to me, you should try to bring some actual old tennis shoes to wear with some fast-drying socks (e.g., smartwool). They served us hot lunch and had a number of great selections - hamburgers, chicken, Polish-type sausages as well as a vegetarian mushroom option. We also went to the Half Bad Bluegrass Band hoedown Saturday night and I got to whip out my polka skillz as well as any bit of Southern two-stepping and knee-slapping, foot-stomping I had left in me from when I lived in Texas. The band was sizzlin' and the dance floor was packed with people getting down. Some of the best dancing I've had in a LOOOOONG time. Camping was good too and taking Katie Y's advice I brought some earplugs. That was a majorly good choice because you always get the bros up until the late night. Don't count on too much good kindling (e.g., small/medium-sized sticks) at your campsite plot, though, for starting a fire. It seemed pretty well picked over when we got there. Rivermen, I'm told, is the company you should go with if you want a "bang for your buck." There's also Class VI - apparently more for business people etc - and some other companies out there, but I'm definitely all about Rivermen for when I do Upper Gauley next year! I've rafted Gauley Season here three years in a row and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. Our guides (and here I have to share a special shout-out for Glenn and Carsten) have always been fantastic, and given us an experience that totally matched what we wanted. When we were a bunch of newbies, they kept us in the boat for the whole wild ride. Once we felt more comfortable on the river, they took us through the crazier lines and more unusual surf spots. Plus, they were friendly and entertaining whenever we weren't screaming in exhilaration and/or terror. Seriously, the guides rock, and are reason alone to raft here. Some of the other great perks include: -Free coffee in the mornings (critical for your 6:30 am Gauley marathon start) -A hot lunch on the river (I highly recommend the chicken, and the sausage) -Beer on the bus back to the facilities (Coors Light has never tasted so good...) -Hot showers post-rafting (for the women, at least, hotter the farther toward the back you go) -Cornhole And then, of course, there's drinking at Chetty's Pub while you wait for the video of your run to play (don't forget to smile for the camera while you're paddling furiously through your Class V whitewater). Bonus tip: If in doubt, rent a wetsuit. You'll enjoy your rafting trip much more if you aren't cold. read more

I was terrified about this since I'm not a great swimmer and this was my first experience with whitewater rafting. But by the end of my trip down the Upper Gauley, I was sad that I had to leave and loosely entertained thoughts on what my life would be like if I had tried this earlier and decided to become a rafting guide as a career. My experience here was part of a huge school-related group trip, so we got a great group discount and our monster group was split into 7 boats. The guide for our boat was Popcorn, and before we started paddling, I told him about my inexperience with swimming and how scared I was, so he was great about reassuring me. Our boat flipped twice and he was great about making sure that I and everyone else on our team was okay. The lunch was delicious - a cookout with hamburgers, chicken breast, sausages, beans, mac 'n cheese, fruit, brownies, among other things. And all the scary class V rapids were before lunch, so when we returned to the boat, we pretty much chilled down the river for the rest of the ride back. Absolutely everything about this trip was reasonably priced, clean, well-organized, and well-executed. I didn't expect to have as much fun as I did. I'm going to take up some swimming lessons so that I'm stronger and will be less scared of falling out, and I will definitely go rafting again in the future. read more

Just did the zipline tour today and it was one of the most fun experiences of my life. I highly recommend it to anyone, even if you have a fear of heights you're strapped in and as long as you follow instructions you won't get hurt. There are 15 ziplines, 5 rope bridges, a couple short hikes and you repel 30 feet at the end. The staff are very friendly and VERY knowledgeable, I believe both of my tour guides had degrees in Biology and knew a lot about the forest and fauna. The best thing about the course is that it was built with sustainability in mind as long as it did not get in the way of safety, they tried to minimize the impact of the course on the forest which is good for the environment AND good for the experience as well because you're zipping through the trees. Also I was informed a portion of the admission goes towards providing a natural insecticide that saves the trees in the forest from a Japanese Beetle that had been killing a lot of the trees. What a weekend! Cannot say enough about how fantastic our time at Adventures on the Gorge was. First, the half day rock climb was amazing. Justine, our bad-ass guide took us to Junkyard Crag where we climbed some really beautiful rock in a super safe environment. Being climbers ourselves, she was happy to take the time and explain the different safety systems she was using. I was expecting a large group in which we would have to wait a long time in between climbs but was pleasantly surprised that it was only 3 to 1 and went smoothly. Lodging in the bunk cabins was really convenient. We were able to park next to the cabin and leave or cars there all weekend because everything you need is within walking distance. The one thing I will suggest is that guests should be made aware that bed sheets are extra and need to be requested, not a great expense but we just didn't know to bring them ourselves. This was easily resolved though and we were bedded in no time. The next day we were on the Lower Gauley, amazing rapids, again another bad-ass female guide! Cory navigated the river like a surgeon, commanding our boat of large relatively inexperienced guys with a single word. Lunch halfway down was really delicious and beers on the bus at the end of that long day never tasted so good. Those of us that had a free day stayed behind to tackle the Upper Gauley the next day and had the same amazing experience. Hope to be back next year. read more

What kind of campground has its on bar on site? An awesome one! My friends and I booked a package with Adventures on the Gorge that included a half day white water rafting trip, camping, and three meals. As soon as we arrived, our interest was piqued when the lady checking us in told us about a party (including a live band) happening in one of the common areas. This facility is a great combination of "roughing it" and "all inclusive resort." You can do primitive camping (no water or electric), platform tents (which are elevated tents with bunk beds), or cabins in a range of sizes and amenities. There are several restaurants on site and a well-stocked bar. I was surprised to even see some craft beer; they had Rogue Juniper Pale Ale on Tap! Even if you're roughing it with a primitive campsite, they will deliver bundles of wood and ice right to the site. The price for this was very reasonable ($3-$4 each). The community bathrooms were very clean and seemed very new. The food that was included in our package was all buffet style - breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast was decent - but some of the offerings were a little cold. I'm not a fan of deli-style lunches, so I skipped that offering and ordered a burger in the bar. The dinner offering was a combination of highs and lows. They offered pulled pork, ribs, chicken and a few sides. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone deliciousness and the pulled pork was decent. The mashed potatoes were underwhelming. My friend, who doesn't eat pork, was underwhelmed by the chicken and the fact that it wasn't BBQ style. If you haven't purchased a package, the cost of the buffet meals seemed a little high. IIRC, breakfast was around $12 and dinner was around $18. The actual rafting trip was great. Our tour guide, Dave, was friendly, fun, and knowledgeable. He told us jokes and bits of history between the rapids and pointed out various rocks that looked like other things. Although this was my first time rafting, I didn't feel overwhelmed at all, even on the harder rapids. Clearly, Dave knew the river well and led us to the areas we were capable of handling. Overall, I had a great time on this trip. We can't wait to come back and try some of the other activities, such as paintball, ATV rides, and ziplining. read more

I had a great time rafting the lower Gauley with them two days ago. The check-in and wetsuit rental process can be a bit confusing, and can definitely be more streamlined. The place was also a bit hard to find initially, and it took us a short while to figure out where it actually was. Due to rain the previous day instead of upper we had to raft the lower Gauley, but it was still a lot of fun albeit less challenging. We took a bus from the site to the river, and met our guide, Zach, there. He was knowledgable and had a relaxed persona that calmed my nerves. During the trip quite a few people from the other boats flipped over, but no one in ours did. A few times when we came very close to hitting a rock Zach steered us away from it - along with our own hard paddling. The mid-trip lunch cookout was impressive. They set up grills, and served burger, hot dogs, chicken, mashed potatoes, rice and beans, corn, chips and salsa, crackers and cheese, granola bars, and even brownies with whipped cream. We were able to get as much as we wanted to eat. On the bus back they also gave out beers, soda, and water. The one thing that I was tremendously grateful for was the clean bathroom facilities. Gross public bathrooms and changing rooms always irk me, but the facilities onsite were kept in really good conditions, dry and clean. I took a shower after the trip in the spacious changing area that even had a few stalls with curtains just for changing. No more awkward moments when you have to stare at other people's naked bodies in a cramped space or when their naked butts stick in your face. The company also does a variety of other things besides rafting, and I'll definitely consider coming back next time we plan a trip to West Virginia. read more

Took the family on a three day vacation (3 adults and a 9 year old) We stayed in a sportsman cabin. Upon checking in we had an issue with one of the beds. This issue was reported to the front desk and went to dinner. Upon our return the issue was resolved to our satisfaction. We booked the Day on the lake experience, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and rock climbing. Each excursion exceeded our expectations and the staff was more than professional. We had the pleasure of having Bayer Watson as our guide on two of these excursions and he blew it out of the water! All meals on the resort and on the excursions were very filling and the BBQ was fabulous. I will be looking for multiple opportunities to return with friends and family. I have been coming to AOTG for years for various occasions and activities from eating, weddings, hiking, rafting, and bachelorette parties. We had my sister's bachelorette party at AOTG this weekend and had a magnificent time! The booking and payment process were quick and easy. We stayed in a deluxe 4 bedroom cabin and enjoyed the space, the beds, and the hot tub! We also loved being within walking distance to our zip-lining adventure and to Chetty's pub for dinner. We did the TreeTops Canopy Zip-line tour with Nate and Chris. They were spectacular guides who were easy to get along with and great at their jobs. Nate was particularly good at providing support to nervous zippers (me). I will definitely be back and would love to have them again! read more

Have you seen the giant bridge? Everyone in the area seems to love their bridge. Oh, about the rafting... Everything on site was new, the rafts and equipment were in great shape and it was very professionally run. It was a far cry from the equipment I've seen on some other river trips, I was pleasantly surprised. The guides for the New River trip were fantastic, engaging, funny and competent. They told several stories involving the bridge. The river itself was about as expected, exciting, but not intimidating. The highlight of the day was surfing the big hole just before takeout. The pictures and video were ready shortly afterward and the nice girls running the photo counter had some exciting stories about the bridge. The restaurants on the grounds are about what you'd expect for this sort of place, decent and filling. The beer menu was good and the waitress may have mentioned a bridge. The second day we took duckies on the Gauley river. Being Spring, with minimal water released from the damn everything was pretty low and the ride was actually very tame. On the way there the guides said about 12 of the 19 of us would tip, I think it turned out to be only two people who went swimming. All in all it was a nice day, but not nearly as fun as the New river. I'd wait and do this during the damn release. On the plus side, there was plenty of time to talk about the bridge. We'll certainly come back, maybe get catapulted off the bridge (go ahead and ask, they'll tell you). read more

Came for 4 days. Three kids and two adults. Every aspect of the trip was great. Lodging was perfect. We stayed in the Greyhound cabin. Hot tub, two bedrooms two full bathrooms washer & dryer full kitchen. We got the prepaid meal plan. Every meal was great. Smokey's was top notch smoked BBQ and the steaks were awesome. Our waiter Caleb noticed our 12 year old looked kinda down. He came out with a fancy Shirley temple for her. Her mood changed instantly after that. (Thank you Caleb!) Everyone like their meals so much we went back two nights later and ordered almost all the same dinners again. Chetty's had awesome hand battered chicken strips, smoked wings, tacos with all the great smoked meats from smokey's. We went on music Monday night. Fun atmosphere. The activities!!! We flat water kayaked the first day with A guide named Foose . Cool guy , great personality. He was on a stand up paddle board. Did lower section on day two with the Duckies. Loved it. I flipped mine.. which was awesome! Our guide that day was momma duck Karen. She went above and beyond for everyone. Awesome with the kids. After the trip we stood around and had great conversation with her for some time. Day three we did the Timber Trek and loved it. Kids 12, 14 & 16 and two adults. All had a great time. Totally out of the comfort zone for everyone. A first for us all. A bunch of courses to try. All different abilities and challenges. Definitely a physical activity. Highly recommend. The pool here was really nice too. The last day we rafted the upper section. Our guide JD did fantastic. No one fell out and we hit some BIG BIG rapids. I would recommend each one of our guides. The property, variety of activity choices, the friendliness of the staff, the great food choices, cleanliness of all facilities will definitely bring us back again! Well done read more

Rafting Safe, and nice guide. He had been to pretty much every river - including Himalayas (the most challanging white waters). Very friendly - we had drinks with this guy and he managed us some discount, which was the only reason why we did more sports activities :P Zip lining - awesome guide! The fastest zip lines in US (and my first experience ever). We raced on dual zip lines and duh, yeah, i won The best one was rock climbing - where i performed quite disappointing. And thanks to the guide, I managed to climb to top, in toughest rock climbing (on natural, vertical tower cliff). My advise - if you have experienced or too much adventures friends - try to skip the tower - start with something easier. Accomodation s*ked though. We had a cabin with bench, which seems like a nice idea, but, amenities were bad - we had asked for bench, which they didn't deliver until 2 days. Even after we checked out. Kayla Stinnett was the best rafting guide ever! I have never been white water rafting and I went for the first time last month with a group of students from my college. I felt so safe in Kayla's hands. She is competent and knowledgeable about the river and also can crack some hilarious jokes along the way. The day was freezing cold, but we had a blast and I am now a huge fan of white water activities! Thank you Kayla for the best of times and AOTG for a great weekend stay. My family and I have been waiting till our youngest is old enough so we could raft the lower gauley during gauley season. We made it for opening day! The experience was exactly what we were looking for in the way of excitement and adventure. I am only rating them 3 stars however because our guide, although knowledgeable and funny, threw the "f" bomb around about half a dozen times along with various other curse words and dirty jokes- once again, this was supposed to be a family trip with my 3 children. No respect for women and children present. Also we paid a hefty rv camping fee and there was only electricity - no water or sewage... we've never paid as much as we did here even with full hookups :/ read more

We chose an all inclusive adventure for a day. We did gravity zip line in the morning which was totally a must do adventure and rapid run with Rivermen in the afternoon. Our raft master TJ was the best! He was truly experienced, funny and awesome! He managed to made even a scared kid in our raft to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience. He told several informative things bout the river and funny encounters too. It's the guy at the back of your raft( which was TJ) that will make this experience truly incredible!! We will come back to do Gauley river raft in fall. The kayak with rock climb combination was awesome too. Did some cliff jumps and boy oh boy that was addicting! Very tricky to get to this place though so read the map carefully! But overall this place is super awesome!! read more

Great Place for easy adventure for the family. They offer alot of different activities. We stopped here for pizza. It was good pizza with outdoor seating near the high ropes course. I was fun to watch people try to make it through the course while you eat. A really good dinner and a show. Clean Bathrooms and Showered come in handy after you are done being extreme for the day. On the gorge side of the Road, they have a upscale restrauant and bar, but we didnt get the chance to check it out. read more

Rivermen is a white-water campground/tour guide group. September is around the time when they open the dam for some extremed rapids on the upper river. When I went the dam wasn't going to be opened for another week, so I rafted the lower river (gulley?). I'll begin with the amenities: The cheapest way to stay here is to rent a campground, where you can park your VW camp-van, or pitch a tent. When I went, I was with a group of sixteen so we stayed in these A-Frame style tents. It was the first week of September, so the days were warm, but the nights were freezing! We all froze in the A-Frame, as it has the same insulation equivalent to staying in a tent. If I had know this earlier, I would've paid for a heated cabin (they have ultra-small ones with just a bed and a heater). The main base-camp has showers, toilets, and a restaurant. All in all a great experience! read more

Stayed in a cabin that was clean and comfortable, needed to bring linens but did not mind, cabin was very reasonable and personal fire pit and picnic table included.. only drawback was shared bathhouse that was slightly far away, though very clean. For world class white water routes and world class rafting guides, go here!! Today was the second time our group rafted the Marathon Gauley River route, both times were with Class VI and both times everyone has a blast. A year ago we rafted in the 8 man boat with 5 in our party, today we rafted in a 4 man boat and also had 7 people in the 8 man; all of my friends thoroughly enjoyed it and felt safe with the guides. I had Miles as a guide the first time we went and we specifically requested him again this year; he is an excellent guide with tremendous experience and a great attitude! He will allow your group to run the routes they're ready for and we felt extremely safe with him as our guide even while on these dangerous rapids. Just completed my second time rafting. Our guide was Ray Ray. He thoroughly engaged the team in his raft and we all had a great time. He knows the rivers and is very skilled at getting us safely through each rapid. He talked about each rapid and the safest way to approach the raging waters. I also noticed the teamwork Ray Ray exhibited. He was always watchful of the other rafters and it was clear safety was number one for all the teams and rafts. I also liked the fact that Ray Ray was excited as much as the team was about the adventure. You might think that guides might just go through the motions but Ray Ray got us all going........paddles in the same direction. read more

Very organized tour! We did half day rafting one day down the lower New with the guide named Halil aka Uz. Great, skilled guide and made some good jokes too! Rafting was fun! They even gave us some beers on the bus ride back! Climbed with a guide named Justine the next day. She was extremely professional and knowledgable and made sure we had a great experience while staying safe. The front desk staff seemed a little scattered but overall everything else exceeded our expectations. Would definitely recommend these guides and this company to anyone looking for some adventure in this area. read more

Great place to stay. The rafting trips are outstanding!! Doug and Chris are fantastic guides and go above and beyond to make your trip down the river, one you won't forget !!!
