I ordered a dunno board for curbside pickup and picked out some mob grip tape when I swung by. ***I actually swung at a time by when they technically closed but I called ahead and the guy was super chill said no problem he didn't even rush me out he went out of his way to answer all my questions as a new skater and recommended me where to go to get the stuff I wanted since there was a national skate supply shortage at the time. I know working in retail can be very challenging. Trust me I know from my own experience after 14 years. Came to this shop and dropped off a board for repair filled out a form with all my information. I was told I would be contacted by Monday. No call or follow up. Sure I know things can get crazy at the store at times. So I decided to follow up. I called Thursday, Friday and Saturday I was told I was going to get a call back mind you it's over a week already and no information about the repair of the board. Have a great communication with customer is key to success in any business. Now their staff is very knowledgeable about their product, friendly and professional. But when you requested to speak to a manager his response (manager) after communicating my frustration. Dude I just need to know when is the board going to be ready? His response.. The tech will contact you. No excuse or acknowledgement regarding me calling 3 days back to back following up. Really what is the customer experience suppose to look like? read more

Aegir was awesome. Stopped in to get a board set up with virtually zero clue what I should be looking for as well as my wife who also had no clue. They were super patient and answered every single question and gave me options to try out and explanations of why one option was different than the other. Probably spent about two hours going over everything which personally I probably wouldn't have done myself but they didn't hesitate and smiled the whole way through. Best part was they taught me and my kids how to set the board up and showed us the process involved for the future. Friendly service, but this is absolutely NOT a snowboard shop. I'd been looking for new snowboard boots this season. Went to most places in Manhattan and, after no luck, thought I might need to head to a specialized place - whether ski shop or skate/board shop. Before coming here, I called to ask if they had women's snowboard boots. The guy said yes, and that they are on sale, from prior year's models. So we head over here, and realize that the only boots they have are the ones left over from over the years when they last sold snowboard gear. They were super cheap (like less than $100), but the guy who was assisting me, despite trying to be very helpful, admitted that he knew nothing about snowboarding, because he's a skater. And that the store stopped selling snowboard gear several years ago because they weren't making any money. Fair enough, but perhaps it should be more clear to patrons so that shoppers who are seriously looking for gear do not come here expecting much. We ended up going to a ski shop, a bit farther from us, but had more luck there. Overall, good place for skate and surf, but don't come if you are looking for snowboard gear. read more

Disclaimer: the situation described happened a couple of years ago so things may have improved. I was just getting into snowboarding and needed to buy boots to complete my set. I wanted to support a small business and found Aegir. The staff wasn't particularly helpful or friendly but they weren't outright rude either. I bought a pair of boots and made sure I would be able to return them since I was still shopping around. A couple of days later I saw the same boot for cheaper in a color that matched my board. I went back to return them and they gave me store credit. I tried going back a few times after but they were closed even though their store hours said they'd be open. A year has passed by the time I end up there while they're open. While checking out, I discover that my store credit was invalid because it was more than a year since it was issued. They ended up applying half of the store credit. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I shouldn't expect the same level of service and flexible return policy as a chain retailer but I walked away feeling kind of scammed. The entire experience wouldn't have felt so bad if they were apologetic and friendly about the whole situation but their attitude made me feel guilty for essentially giving them more money. read more

Very, very, very poor customer service. Bad surfshop run by kooks, and just a bad and disorganized business - DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE. Aeigir took $760 for a board I paid for online for local pickup (which said was in stock and wasn't) They never delivered on it, nor explained when or how I might get a board wile they held my money and failed to return my emails after multiple friendly attempts. I spoke to the owner (PETER) finally on the phone after reaching out day after day with emails and phonecalls. He seemed aloof, vaguely promising to "make it right," somehow then doing nothing - besides ignoring more emails and phonecalls as the days turned into weeks. I concluded my money had been stolen -- but I was wrong. I was able to convince the nice kid on the phone to refund the charge on my credit card. I actually havn't gotten the money back yet but I did an email from the shop (finally) claiming my money had been refunded. I work with and am friends with a lot of New York surfers -- I could have purchased this board cheaper on a website but I wanted myself and my surf group to support a local shop and Aegir seemed cool and convenient. This is our second bad expirence with the place. We will find another good shop with hard working and organized management, but life is too short to work with bad actors. Save yourself the frustration! The only good thing I can say is that the kid who works behind the counter was super nice, stoked for surfing and seemed to care about the customer. My guess is he covers for his boss's incompetence and laziness constantly. If you run another surf shop I'd try to poach him asap. read more

We walked in today, about 20 minutes ago, to look at suits and boards. We are just visiting, but my boyfriend was willing to buy a new suit and board here to take back with him, if he could figure out where to surf nearby in NYC. When my boyfriend asked "where can you surf here?", the jerk sitting behind the desk responded "Long Island, Jersey. You can surf here to Florida, whole coast" (USA, entire East coast) in the most pretentious way possible. Telling someone inquiring about "here" who is likely interested in surfing (he is in your damn surf shop after all) obviously is referring to actual surf spots nearby. If you're defensive about your surf spots and hate foreigners and tourists, get over yourself. Or only sell surf equipment to locals, post a nice sign on the door. But don't be incredibly rude when someone asks you a question. Considering they may have bought a lot from you. You lost a customer read more

Five stars - this store is a true gem for surfers in NYC, they will repair your boards at the store! Yes, they are the only surf shop in all of the five boroughs that will do board repair. I had them fix a fin box as well as a whole bunch of dings, and they did a top-notch job. No need to wait for some strange friend-of-a-friend that some dude in the store knows that can fix dings. I've been to all the surf shops on Rockaway Beach, all of them, not one offers board repair - they all passed me a card to call some random dude, and maybe he'll fix it. Tried the fancy shops in Williamsburg and Manhattan, they pointed me to someone local who does board repair, they got back to me about a month after Aegir worked their magic on my boards. Even though the location may be out of the way for some, it's well worth the trip. Your board will be in good hands and they'll do a top-notch job patching up dings and anything short of the board snapping in half. I fully support this shop! read more

Brought my board down from manhattan and was told they wouldn't be able to do it until the next night. Girl at the desk was also super douchey about it and gave me tons of attitude. This is the first review iv ever left for any business on any site. I just like to give the benefit of the doubt to any small business and feel bad leaving reviews that my affect their business. But I've tried to get in touch with the shop to resolve this and my emails are being ignored, so don't really know what else to do. Here's briefly what happened: I went into the shop a few weeks ago to buy a fish board. I'm new to surfing, have been riding a long board, and wanted to get something more maneuverable. When I told this to one of the employees, he suggested I should get a soft top, because they're "indestructible" and especially good for the crowded Rockaways. We chatted for quite a while, as I know next to nothing about surfing and have never considered riding a soft top, but he was adamant that this would be the right call, "you can bang it up, it'll last forever". In the end, i got the board because of its promised durability. The next day, I got in the water with it, and paddled around not more than 10 minutes when i noticed a big gash on the side. The waves were tiny that day, I didn't have any collisions, but obviously someone's fin had slide across the top of the board and cut it open. I was obviously pretty bummed. I had just spent $400 on a brand new board that I bought because I was told it could take a beating. So anyways, I called the shop and spoke to the guy, and got a reply of "yeah shit happens, welcome to surfing bro." I brought the board in again, and got another "yeah welcome to surfing bro" response and another employee. They said they could just throw some glue in it, clearly trying to just get rid of me. Now i understand gear is gear, and sometimes shit goes wrong. I used to race bikes and now run ultra marathons, but if anyone would sell me shoes or pedals with the explicit promise of them working a specific way (durability, etc), and then if they turned out not to preform in that way, I'd stand behind that promise, not just brush it off. I asked for the owners email, they wouldn't give it to me so i left mine. I heard nothing for a week, then i emailed the shop, two weeks late, still nothing. I was super polite about all this, i don't really get frustrated or mad at anyone, just trying to solve an issue, but no one seemed to give a shit. Anyways, I still haven't heard from anyone so don't know what else to do but regrettably write this review. read more

I've had two boards repaired so far here and left very happy. The turnaround and quality of the work is great and price very fair. The last repair was on an epoxy (LFT) that took in some water after a nasty ding. It's now good as new (until the next time a friendly Rockaway kook drops in on me). Usually I do my own ding repair but I found myself with a rail gouge that demanded more TLC than I thought I could deliver. I've been in and out of Aegir since the place opened and I've always enjoyed their laid back approach and casual banter so I figured I'd give their ding repair services a whirl. My fairly serious ding was repaired in a timely fashion and I got a welcomed courtesy call when it was done. The repair is not only solid but also aesthetically pleasing as well. I was happy to pay the asking price for the repair and I will readily do the same in the future when I've got a repair I'm apprehensive about doing myself. Stoked! read more

Great place to come to if you're new or intermediate snowboarder. The owner took the time to find a great board and set up for me based on what I was looking for. Peter is the best! He loves surfing and is totally egalitarian about it. He does an amazing job on board repairs too. I've been to several surf shops between Long Beach and Montauk - those places are not friendly or even really into helping. Peter's attitude keeps me going back to Aegir's time and again because I am someone who has questions and is always wanting to learn, and Peter will talk with you instead of treating the shop like a 7-11 expecting you to get-in and get what you need on your own and get out.
