Have you had Affogato? It's when you take a double espresso and (delightfully) cut the bitterness by pouring it over ice cream or gelato. Affogato makes small batches of 5 gelatos in house. Flavors rotate, but you can count on delicious options. This is my favorite treat to keep me going on a nice afternoon. Just to say beforehand: I don't like writing bad reviews of a place. I used to be a regular at this place, grabbing a coffee or espresso or gelato basically everyday. Everything they make is gold, especially their coffee and muffins. I've sung their praises high and wide but essentially stopped going due to a number of unpleasant experiences. After they made a significant staff reduction, or so far as I can tell, every visit either my drink has been messed up (twice), things have been spilled, I've been rudely treated, or they have been consistently out of something. Their wait times can also be egregious, even if there is only one or two people in front of you, as there is never more than one person there and their espresso drinks and affogatos take a long time to make. Literally every single time something has gone wrong, so I don't think I'm going to go anymore. The last few times I went, I just wanted a waffle cone, which I never used to have a hard time getting. One time they ran out before I got there, another time they gave the last one out while I was in the store and the I went in tonight and they didn't have any either. I was a little frustrated, admittedly, but I was told it was the price of making everything from scratch (the tone she used was condescending, as if I shouldn't expect them to be Starbucks, which is fair except most places around here make cones from scratch and don't run out.) She didn't offer to make any more despite being open for five more hours, then said the owner was probably going to take them off the menu because they don't like disappointing people. If enough people are getting disappointed, why not just make more? I seriously used to give this place so much money, but now seeing as my drinks are consistently messed up, the service is bad, rude or nonexistent, and they don't have stuff in stock, I am probably not going to come around unless their customer service and attentiveness improves. Considering how few competent spots there are in St. John's, I hope this place gets back to its former consistency. read more

This place is great! First of all, it's my favorite coffee in Portland. Their drip coffee is very good and they have dark roast, which I like. All their espresso drinks are made to perfection. The food is impeccable. Everything is from scratch, including the gelatto. The owner explained to me that they don't even use a commercial base. If you're lucky, you can get even a blueberry muffin made with duck eggs from able farms. Their beans are insanely cheap and fresh too. They are roasted in Eugene by the owner's uncle. Oh and did I mention it's a family business run by two awesome brothers? It's a friendly place to stop in and meet your neighbors. Do yourself a favor and check it out. read more

I liked how they had only 5 flavors, but all hand made and very very delicious. The guys running the place were great too! Affogatos are the perfect dessert for coffee lovers. Who can resist gelato + espresso? I was excited when I saw the name of this place and expected them to have a nice selection of gelato for the affogato ($5). I was a bit disappointed to see only 5 options and some of them didn't go well with coffee. I ordered it with salted caramel which was good but on the sweet side. They probably meant caramel gelato since I didn't taste any of the salt flavor. My friend ordered the raspberry gelato and didn't really enjoy it as an affogato but did say the gelato by itself was pretty good. read more

Went there with the desire for their namesake, an affogato (espresso over ice cream, or in this case, gelato). The flavor options on this day: salted caramel, honey sesame, blueberry lavender, peach and candied habanero, dark chocolate fresh basil cinnamon sorbetto, and as a sign indicated, they had chocolate in the back. The friendly employees (one of whom was the maker of the gelato) insisted that we sample each of the flavors, not hesitating to give out two spoonsful of each. We went with the non-dairy dark chocolate fresh basil cinnamon sorbetto, which was delicious; it certainly went well with espresso. An affogato will cost you $5. Dividing that between the cost of espresso and gelato, this is a fair price for this unique and tasty treat. The space in the place is very limited, as is the seating. One can't blame the owners much for this, but it's a significant detail if you'd like some breathing room and/or don't envision taking your affogato to go. read more

Three things make this place the BEST: 1. Homemade Chai! I'm not a big Chai drinker, but I just happened to be in the shop one day as they were making it and it smelled amazing! My Mom is now hooked. 2. Hemp milk mochas! After tasting this delicious concoction (I prefer iced), I will never again go back to Soy. So rich and creamy! It's like a milkshake without the dairy. Yum!!! Now I'm hooked. 3. Homemade Gelato! Try the Salted Caramel. You will not be disappointed! My husband is hooked. Overall: This place makes it's own ingredients - chai, sauces (drink flavoring), gelato and even the whipped cream! Last night on a walk through St John's my dad recollected a place that had a very unique espresso drink made with orange. It's on their menu as the Borgia, and I never drink mochas but I would highly recommend you try an 8oz (the smallest) one of these. I'm leaving this five star review for the barista as well as the beverage as well as the fresh roasted beans I brought. She was very welcoming and patient, despite the barrage of questions from a pair of wandering coffee geeks. Equator Coffee has been roasting for 25 years (massive achievement), they deliver twice per week within a day of roast, the coffee is bagged by hand in St John's and an ACTUAL ONE POUND BAG is only $10?! Enjoy that price while you can Portland, because that's a rare deal for locally roasted coffee. Thanks Affogato and Equator for being a highlight of our day! read more

Affogato is neck and neck with Anna Bannana's next door for the best latte in St. John's and pulls ahead by a hair for doing something to remove the nasty mildew smell from their side of the building. And $8 per pound coffee that actually tastes good, roasted by the owner's uncle? Come on! When they make soup specials, sometimes with foccacia bread to go with it, always say yes. On a cold rainy day (which is about 80% of the time here in Portland), it's just what the doctor ordered. So why not five stars? The gelato. I'm not crazy about it. The flavors are inventive, but it lacks that rich creamy je ne sais quoi that made me wake up in the middle of the night and run to the gelato shop in Buenos Aires and Rome. I'd say there was just something in the water here that makes it impossible to make comparable gelato to those served in Argentina and Italy but the tragically closed Alder Pastry on Burnside proved me wrong by turning out the best damn gelato I've ever had before shutting their doors forever (sob sob sob). The other downside to this business is they're still working out their credit card system and tack a little fee onto credit card payments. I'm all about supporting the little guy and want these guys to survive, but that little fee is a fly in the delicious soup of my life. read more

So I came here and asked for a hazelnut latte. The barista politely let me know that they didn't have hazelnut. I said fine, and re-ordered an Irish cream latte. She once again told me they did not carry the flavor. I ask her what flavors they DO carry, and she let me know that every ingredient they use is handmade, not just a syrup or a powder bought at the store. Impressed, I told her to just surprise me. I had a great experience the other day. We wondered in from a hot day wanting some gelato. The friendly lady behind the counter offered samples of every flavor - they were not busy at the time. Terrific Hemp Lattes, $8/lb fresh, fair trade coffee, the best blueberry muffins you'll ever have, and terrific service! I buy all my whole bean coffee here, it's a great place to stop by and grab a drink or snack. The folks who work here are always helpful and friendly, you'll never be treated with an attitude or indifference. I highly recommend swinging by! It doesn't have very good seating, which some folks might not like. This place is great every time. The gelato is delicious and the flavors are a combination of "normal" and unique. I've had the cookies and cream, salted caramel, and chocolate chili. I've also probably sampled the rest. Also, they make cones too and thy are yummy. But it's not just the gelato. The facility is always neat and clean. Whoa! When I found out there was a new gelato shop in town, I got just a bit giddy. So we finally took the family here for dessert the other night. Ice cream is the kid's favorite (I mean... what kid doesn't like ice cream?). So we walk in and take a look at the glass case full of about 20 flavors. These aren't your run of the mill flavors. They use chilies and cabernet wine and marshmallows to add excitement to their creamy goodness! This is hand made, small batch yumminess and they do it all without using a commercial base. They also strive to use fresh, local ingredients and boy, do they deliver! I tried about 5 flavors but ended up getting the Fluffer Nutter (fresh peanuts and marshmallow goop is used here), and Salted Caramel (my favorite). I also tried the raspberry, chocolate chunk and vanilla bourbon (three different flavors). The gal helping us out was very generous with all of us on tasters... she was willing to let us taste and taste until we found the right kind for each of us. Plus she was super sweet with my kids. In addition to the ice cream, they offer coffee drinks using "Equator Coffee" (roasted in Eugene by their uncle). You can apparently combine the two as well in some sort of espresso/gelato combo. I'm going to have to do this next time. We noticed they had full pound bags of the coffee for sale for $8!!! In a land of $14-$15 for 12 oz.... yeah. That's a deal! So, we snagged a bag of Organic French and I have been enjoying that dark roast every morning. The ambiance is adorable. Wood tables, a little bar-ish seating area and a few tables out front on the sidewalk. Small but enough for the few groups of us that were there at the same time. I can see this place catching on, however, and getting more crowded. But with the generous hours of 7am-11pm, I think they'll be able to handle it! FYI: This place is cash only right now. But the hubz just hopped over to the 7-11 down the street to grab some and all was well. In summary: They've got something special going on with this place and I'm stoked they chose St. John's to share it with! I have a feeling the kids will be begging us to take them again soon. Honestly this is a yummy product done really well! Simon works hard creating some very interesting (and delicious) flavors in small batches so you know that they are gonna be amazing. I also really love that they work hard at having lactose free and vegan gelato flavors at all times. The coffee is also really good...like worth getting out of your car to get it good. I also felt that the prices + open until 11pm are just icing on the cake. Really great place! I also want to point out that while they have exciting not run of the mill flavors they also had just enough "normal" flavors to keep kids and those that are not super adventurous happy. read more

This place is the best thing that's happened to St. Johns in a long time! Amazing coffee and espresso - they even have almond milk and can make a mean cappuccino with it! The gelato is out of this world -every flavor is unique and very high quality. I don't usually handle dairy and sugar very well -but with the homemade ingredients used in this gelato production have not even caused a mild reaction. The owners also make daily food specials which are truly deserving of a 5 star restaurant - phenomenal! The owners are both wonderful guys -very friendly, caring for their community and dedicated to quality in everything they do.
