I miss the old (cozy, quiet) Oui Presse. The new version is bright, loud & expensive. I got a 12oz chai with oat milk that was $7 (before tip) that barely tasted like chai (similar to how a seltzer barely tastes like fruit). So basically I paid $9 (including tip) for a glass of warm milk. Also, the only menu was lying flat on the counter so the whole time you're standing in line you have no idea what's available. Great coffee! My only qualm was that there was a bit of slow service but I understand when you go into a cafe on a Sunday afternoon with a small crowd of people waiting that's bound to be the case. Loved our stop here for breakfast! The poached eggs are so perfectly done and really enjoyed it on the beans and toast. Our party ended up going back to get extra chocolate chip cookies because they were just that good. Oui Presse makes good coffee and the food is above average, depending on who is preparing it. The issue is with the service and inconsistency. The final time I tried this shop, I politely asked for a half oatmilk half whole milk latte and got a glare, an eye roll, and a glance at the other barista who raised her shoulders condescendingly. Okay, I get it, my order was a bit out of the ordinary but that's what I like and it's very easy to make, and much less demanding than half the orders I hear people make. I don't need an attitude when I'm making an order, talk your smack behind my back if you must. As for the food, the poached eggs and toast is nice and the coffee cake is excellent, so long as it's heated up properly. Last time I tried it, the rude dude tried serving it cold. When I asked for it to be heated, he grumbled, heated it for a couple minutes in the oven and it was still cold. So I sat and drank my silly half oat milk latte and my cold coffee cake as I bid au revoir to Oui Presse forever. read more

I really want to like this place, but I'm conflicted because some of their prices are way too high. I used to come here before the pandemic, and it was better. I just moved back and came in for a hot chocolate. It was $7 for a small (12oz) hot chocolate! I won't lie, the hot chocolate was good, but $7 seems a bit crazy. It used to be $4.5. Hell even $5 is understandable. I don't know what rents are like nowadays for businesses, but you want to keep your prices reasonable. Btw, the mocha was $7 too?!? I struggled with how many stars to give. The service was good. It wasn't busy when I was there. I like the ambiance too and would love to visit more, but my wallet says no. read more

I've made it a goal to visit all the hip coffee shops while Im living in Portland. There are so many it took me over a year to get around to trying this. I will come back here for the delicious soup but it wont make it into my rotation due to the uncomfortable seating. ATMOSPHERE: when visiting coffee shops I usually ask the following questions: is the coffee good, is this a good environment for studying, will this place make a cute date spot? I wouldnt linger here because of how uncomfortable the chairs are. Not only are they hard metal but the sides dug painfully into my hips. Im an average sized woman (14/16) and had to perch at the edge of the chairs to sit at the table. CLEANLINESS: the tables were dirty. the bathroom was clean (but very cold!!). SERVICE: the barista wasnt particularly warm or friendly to me. I wouldnt describe my experience as bad, just not welcoming. Other customers came in and she was noticeably different with them. Maybe they were regulars? 2/5 FOOD: I got 2 espresso shots, hazelnut coffee cake, and the soup of the day. The coffee cake is mid. Go to Costello's Travel Cafe if you want bomb coffee cake. 2/5 The coffee was nice. 5/5 The soup of the day was borlotti bean with tomato and collards. This soup was actually quite delicious and redeemed this cafe. It came with a baguette and butter, which tasted high quality. 5/5 PRICE: prices are average. ACCESSIBILITY: the bathroom is not ADA compliant. It has a bar but cannot fit a wheelchair or walker. As the cafe is right on Hawthorne Im pretty sure there is a bus stop nearby. Lights werent too bright, and music was at a moderate volume. PARKING: I took a taxi here, but it looks like street parking is plentiful. read more

Stopped by here for a super quick tea (THEY HAVE PG TIPS!!!) and coffee cake to go. I was impressed by the menu and for sure need to try out a few more items on the menu. The coffee cake tasted a little off to me, not super sweet/too much baking power? I'm frustrated that I can't give more specific feedback. I'm wondering if this batch was a little bit wonky due to the crazy heat we've had the past couple days. So many people give the coffee cake high marks, so I'm more than willing to give this place another try! When I do, I'll gladly update this review! I'm a jam girl. Put jam on anything and I will eat it. The baguette with butter and jam at Oui Presse is *chef's kiss*. Beautiful flaky baguette topped with what can only be described as a slab of butter (in all the best ways). And not just any butter...Kerrygold pure Irish butter. Yum yum yum. AND THEN IT GETS BETTER because there's jam on top of that. I was given a choice of strawberry, Marionberry, and apricot- I wasn't feeling adventurous, so I stuck with strawberry. I am definitely going back for the others though. The order comes with two large slices, so you won't be left hungry. Enjoy in the cute cafe or on shady tables outside and pair it with a drink. PS- I also tried a bite of my friend's coffee cake and it was equally amazing- hot and fresh out of the oven. Truly you can't go wrong with food here! read more

This open airy shop is run by its owner with occasional helpers. The newsstand is small but well stocked. The tables inside are pleasant as are the ones on the extremely wide sidewalk outside in good weather. She makes excellent coffee drinks, as good as I have ever had. The limited menu depends on soup made fresh in house and bread baked and toasted here along with coffee cake available by the slice. The 40 minutes we were there had a steady stream of hungry customers, a couple of college students using the wifi and drinking coffee. The poached eggs on toast and coffee cake we had for breakfast were flavorful and well made, the crispy toast was fabulous. The soup we took home cold and heated in the microwave. Also excellent. At the moment, Oui Presse is a minimalist paradise. Some of the hardest reviews to write are of new businesses. Do you write about what is or what (you think) will be? When I've reviewed early, sometimes I've been right on the money and in other cases, things really took a turn I didn't see coming. It is one thing for an owner to say what they have planned and another to execute on that vision. Whether it is by design or just early days, the decor is severely spartan. So even though they have interesting little touches here and there, I was practically blinded by the white walls and a bit put off by the bare space. And yet there are glimpses of such beauty and style it warmed my heart as I was sipping a superbly made Stumptown latte. The signage is almost nonexistent, but Oui Presse is located just a few doors down from Castagna. You are drawn into the space by the pictures of a windblown man reading and a woman holding a cup of coffee in the front picture windows. For a moment I felt as if I was in a graphic novel looking out on Hawthorne. The seating is also a bit utilitarian and so the environment chafed against my personal preference for comfort and color. However, the staff is absolutely lovely and they have a nice selection of magazines with a focus on design and style mags. Don't worry, they also had some sufficiently fun entertainment options at the counter. I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach to this place. It will be very interesting to see how it develops. read more

I had the baguette with jelly and butter and it was delicious! I microwaved it for 15 seconds when I got home to make it softer and melty. The top of the bread was really hard/crispy and cut-up the roof of my mouth. But that was kind of expected. At first glance at the menu, I thought $7.50 (accurate?) was expensive, but it really was a good sized baguette. I was decently fully after eating it. The person at the cash register was really nice. They mentioned starting to do take-home meals like chicken noodle soup and pork ragu. They were cooking that up while I was in there and it smelled delicious! read more

Liked it: I was feelin' like drip coffee and some coffee cake, and both did not disappoint. I know it's weird to say that about drip coffee, coffee snobs, but I can only imagine that their pour over and French press are even that much better. They have plenty of tables even on a weekend afternoon. It's very spacious and even though it's a small-ish shop you can feel like you have a little privacy to your conversation. The slice of coffee cake you get for $3.50 is huge, so plan to share it with one or two other people. The atmosphere doesn't feel quite "lived in" or curated like a lot of fancy places; it feels more like a pop-up shop that's only rolling into town for a few weeks. Stopped in this morning for a mocha and house coffee. Proprietor was pleasant and friendly, interior was comfy and well-kept. Coffees were excellent, but was not asked if I wanted whipped cream on top - nor was any chocolate drizzled over the top. Mocha was not overly sweet and the chocolate flavor was good. The drinks menu was small, but had all the essentials. They have a nice selection of high-end periodicals on sale - good place to go if you want to spend a rainy afternoon reading and drinking coffee. What a charming little place! Even the people who work there dress in a French way! Wow! I absolutely loved my tea and the peanut butter and jelly sandwich on homemade bread, peanut butter, and jelly with fresh butter (salted with grey salt). Wow, was that AMAZING!!! I must admit that I arrived at this unassuming cafe with the intention of using the washroom. I quickly noticed that all tables inside were taken when I stepped through the door - looked like a good place to study and/or catch up on work. The unisex restroom had two rooms, but the tiny room that housed the toilet had a broken lock, so whoever was occupying the latrine should lock the first door upon entering (there's also a sign to remind/warn you). Since I already had quite the palatable breakfast with tea, I decided to pick up a cup of coffee. I placed an order for their drip coffee to go. It was only $2.00 for a small cup and because I rarely carry cash with me, I felt a bit ridiculous paying with my credit card. Oh well, the tip makes up for it. I seldom drink coffee, but when I do, I prefer to have it black. Oui Presse's drip coffee of the day was very aromatic and earthy. It was also scalding hot, but I managed to down that cup of black liquid caffeine in less than 15 minutes. Was the first and only cup of coffee I had in Portland good? Oui. read more

I really wanted to love this place but I was sadly disappointed. I ordered an iced matcha latte, the beans on toast + poached egg and the coffee cake. The matcha latte came hot at first- he did correct this and put it over ice but the matcha was all at the bottom and top was straight milk. Wasn't a great one. The beans on toast, being British, was calling my name but would have preferred to just have regular beans and not chickpeas. It was good and the bread was good, but not my ideal. The coffee cake sadly I never got to try because they said they were out and another was in the oven- I was sitting outside so asked to let me know when it was ready but they never did. The guy at the counter also took forever to make the drinks. I think if it takes that long, you should tell people to go sit down and it'll be brought to them. I waited in the line to order behind 1 single guy ordering a black coffee to go and a couple ordering some coffees and it took 15 minutes to get to the front of the line. Honestly the most surprising place especially given the name was the decor! It was so boring inside, the decor was some glass plates on the wall and some random DIY-looking decorations.
