I did not have a pleasant experience. Neighbors walk by and comment, "The yard looks beautiful. The contractor did a good job." I am writing this review because the casual observer does not know the struggle. The people who stop and ask for my thoughts, I respond by saying on a scale with craftsmen on one end and laborer on the other, I rate them closer to the laborer end. The contractor said he has in-house 3 teams. I got the C team. Their inexperience showed. I understand the best way to gain experience is to be hands on. But to learn, supervision and mentoring are needed. The supervision was very minimal. The owners were not on site daily. When they did appear, it was mainly to deliver supplies, take away debris, or pickup equipment. Not my job, but I assumed the role of Onsite Superintendent and Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC). If I had not, I am not sure what the project would have ended up looking like. To their credit, if something needed to be corrected or changed, they did it with no resistance. Their motto is "what makes you happy." I say their motto is "we do it nice because we do it twice." Progress was slow. The contract was signed at the beginning of December, and it was completed at the end of March. I was told at the time of the initial site visit it would take 2 weeks to complete. After the contract was signed, there was no communication for over a month. I was left in limbo wondering on the start date. Would it be before Christmas? After Christmas? Before the New Year? After New Year? Start was not until mid-January. There were many days where no work was being done. In my opinion, a month's delay could be attributed to the holidays and weather. Overall, communication was poor during construction. Days and weeks would go by with no update leaving me to wonder if they were even coming back. In the beginning, communication was adequate. But as time went by, it felt like my project was no longer a priority. To date, I have not heard from them. There has been no project completion follow up. Examples of my frustration: Gutter Downspout - They attached an underground drainage pipe to the end without cutting the angled outlet off. This made the pipe protrude out to such a degree it was a trip hazard. I brought this to the contractor's attention, and he agreed. He even provided me with a picture on his phone saying, "this is how it should be done." The sad part was the job he showed me was also performed by the same work crew on my project. They should have known better. They corrected the error with a fitting I provided, but it was sloppy work. The fitting was not straight and too low to the ground. I ended up redoing it. I connected a 2nd downspout to save myself from further disappointment. This would be a common theme during the project, doing things myself. My neighbors would see me in the yard and ask, "isn't the contractor supposed to do that?" Front Entrance Joint Sanding - The front entrance originally consisted of a concrete pad. Instead of removing the concrete pad, they laid the pavers directly on top. Ever seen a vibrator vibrating pavers laid directly on concrete? It is not a pretty sight. Those pavers were jumping! Many pavers were damaged. I was so shocked and angry; I had to lock myself in the house after witnessing the carnage. What really made me mad was prior to this incident, I spent time replacing chipped pavers they had laid with nicer looking ones. But in short order, all that was undone. They fixed the damage, but the replacement pavers they used were the ones I had previously rejected. Later, I went back through the unused pavers to pick the better-looking ones, and had the contractor redo it. Side Gate and Gravel Path - Last day of work, what could go wrong? Well, they removed and repositioned my side gate. When I realized what they were doing, I was LIVID. It was unnecessary. They should have removed the earth a few inches and backfilled with gravel to the former finished elevation. But no, they placed the gravel on top of the existing ground and decided to move the gate higher to clear the gravel path. When the weather moved in during the night, I could hear the gate banging from my bedroom. In the morning, I inspected their work. A snapped bolt, improperly installed latch, and a damaged gate stop. Once again, it is up to me to remedy their poor workmanship. To top it off, they used my neighbor's yard to store their materials. These are just some of the struggles I encountered. Did I mention the multiple times they had to pull up and put down pavers at one section? I lost count after 4 times. Plenty more follies occurred. There were many smaller issues. All those small issues add up and become a pattern of ineptitude. To end this review, let me say my dream was to step out my front door, look out at my front yard, and experience joy and happiness. We tried to do a paper design but then decided to go with the project as it develops real time. We are so happy with the way Prem did the lights and landscaping. Setting up fountain on a steep slope is an engineering marvel and it looks amazing. Prem accommodated our constant incoming requests and provided good value for money. The work spanned more than two months and his crew were there even on Saturdays and days when it was above 100 F super hot days. I DON'T BELIEVE THE REVIEWS. The only way the reviews for this business can be so high is if they are gaming the system. I saw that they tried to pay someone to take down a bad review, so that's one tactic. They might be paying for fake reviews? I don't know, but I wish I could give negative stars. Prem missed our first two estimate meetings but came through on the third. He seems very nice and very reasonable. I really liked his knowledge and he was the first contractor that seemed willing to get the project done quickly. We got a verbal quote of $10K. He said he'd send over a quote within a week. I kept chasing him to actually send the quote but was not in too much of a rush because it wasn't an urgent project, but it was weird that he wasn't following through. I sent maybe 40 EMAILS/PHONE CALLS/TEXTS over the next five months before he finally came through. I should have known that was a red flag. The bid came in at $15K - a third more than he said. I agreed to the bid because he assured me that it would be done quickly and he really seemed to know what he was doing and I liked his demeanor. Fast forward and I had to follow up another 20 TIMES to get this scheduled. He brings his "foreman" over to review the project. He assures me that he will text me that night with a start date. He assures me that it is his employee and his team. I have to harass him for a start date. He never confirms with me. I have to text him the night before to find out what time everyone will be there. A crew shows up and it's all new people. Prem isn't there, and they want ME to tell them WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO!?! What am I paying him for? It's been 8 months, at least 60 back and forths, 4 in-person convos, and we are starting OVER???? I have to manage the crew???? "His crew" turns out to a subcontractor. They don't work for him. Also, he needed to remove my garden rocks before the subcontractor was to start. He didn't. They couldn't start the job. I fired him. He is flaky, he lies, he has zero follow through. We had a great experience with the entire team at Penglin Landscaping. Our backyard project needed removing our existing pool and then having Pavers and landscaping done. Lot of Paver's installation companies were unable to get the pool removed and some had partnership with other Pool removal companies but made it a complex process. But Prem made it look simple, had a clear design and idea for the project, how it'll be done in phases and eased a lot of our worries. He was prompt with providing proposals and very patient as we went through changes in the scope and provided valuable inputs to get the most value for our money. Penglin repaved 1,000 Sq Ft of backyard patio and walk ways. It was originally paved in flagstone which was 20 years old. Penglin demo'd and removed old flagstone and repaved with Belgard pavers. They did a great job! I hired Penglin because in addition to doing the paving they also did the landscaping and moved sprinklers as needed, and connected the pergola downspouts to french drains. My front yard artificial turf project was actually paid in full and was never completed by the previous contractor. Luckily I found Penglin Landscaping thru "Request a Quote", and the rest was history! From start to finish Prem was honest, efficient, accommodating, and just an all-around cool dude! They came out to do a site inspection, and they made sure that the task at hand was mutually agreed upon. Our dream yard has come to fruition! After living here for 15+ years we were able to update our backyard. Prem was very responsive from the get go, and showed up the following day to walk through and gauge the extent of work needed. My husband met him first and told me I'd like him. I brushed it off because it's not the first time he's said something like that. He was right. Prem took the time to come back another day for me to meet him and explain again what the game plan would be. He is very genuine and personable, no air of arrogance whatsoever. He wasn't pressuring, knew we received a couple of quotes from various contractors and respected the time needed to decide. The day came to break cement and they didn't stop, day after day, they were here 8:30am-4pm Monday through Saturday! The projected time frame for the project was adhered to. The team is very disciplined and respectful. I commend them for their diligence and hard work. In the scorching sun and they're still trucking along moving the pavers in wheel barrows. As for Kevin, Prem's father, he's admirable because even though he's the owner, he's present when a situation needs his attention and he's not afraid to pick up a shovel. I truly believe a good leader leads through their actions. Overview of the project, we agreed to do all pavers surrounding the three sides of the house. The yard had to be leveled, there was about a foot discrepancy, leading the water to flow towards the house when it rains. So they countered it by building a two inch slope away from the house and leading to the drainage line that flows to the front of the house. A retaining wall erected with 8 lights nestled under the caps, casting a soft glow at night, plus two uplights where the planters are. They poured DG sand (epoxy mixed sand that hardens) along the edges where the fence is lining to prevent future weeds from growing. Two electrical outlets were ran at the two corners of the yard. Really can't say enough good things about this father son team. We actually recommended them to a fellow neighbor before work was even done on our yard. Sometimes, scheduling mistakes can happen, but instead of acknowledging a mistake and life goes on, he tries to shift the blame to everyone else. I'm glad I didn't use them. Details: 3:00 - appt time 3:07 - I called to inquire if he's coming. Asked if he's coming and ETA, he just replied: "Soon" and hangs up. Bad sign. 3:17 - Kevin calls and says he has no calendar entry and questioned if I had even set up an appointment with him. He questioned if I called someone else instead. I told him to check our text history. 3:18 - I text Kevin to remind he proposed the time. 3:23 - Kevin calls and says he didn't get the address until now. That's not possible. Before his OK response and proposal for 3 PM appt, I provided him my address. In fact, he told me earlier he would only set up a time after I gave him my address. So, what is he replying OK to? We wanted to replace our hardscape with pavers. I did some research to find out what the going rate was in our area. I then got three quotes. Two were considerably higher than this rate. One was a little more reasonable; however, there were some red flags. I tried one more quote. I called the number at Penglin's website, where it went to voicemail. Rather than leave a message, I was going to send an email instead. Before I could do so, I got a call back from Prem. We set up a time for him to come over for an estimate. Later in the day, I received a detailed estimate by email. This was much more in line with what my research had estimated a job of our size (2000+ square feet) should be. After we paid a deposit, they gave me an estimated start date. The start ended up being a week later, which I consider a good thing since I would rather they do a good job on the other customers' job. The crew showed up at 8:30 like clockwork, including on Saturdays (after they asked for my permission). One impressive day was when they hauled off the old hardscape from the back and front yards that was piled up in the driveway, busted out the two-car driveway, plus excavated and graded dirt - all in little over four hours. Early on, Prem recommended that we add drainage from all the downspouts routed to the street, where again he quoted a very fair cost. Overall, the job went smoothly, and Penglin gave me all three of what I like to see in a business: honesty, fairness, and quality work. There were a couple of issues at the end of the job, but showing their integrity was addressed even after I had made the final payment. I am recommending Penglin to any of my friends that are looking to do a landscaping project. read more

We had an excellent experience working with Penglin to replace 2,000 sf of concrete with beautiful pavers and install artificial turf. Penglin is a well-established family business owned by Kevin. Our initial contact was with his son, Prem, who is in charge of customer satisfaction among other things. Prem has lots of hands-on experience, a business degree, and his own business in a related field. We found him very informed, pleasant, intelligent, and easy to work with. Compared to others bidders, he was very prompt, clear, and professional. We had very specific requirements regarding artistic design (e.g. lots of inlaid curves), structural (e.g. drainage), and coordination with another project (i.e. deck) that caused a big challenge for other hardscaping companies, yet Kevin easily understood our objectives and assured us they would be no problem. We were made aware of lead time upfront before signing the contract and Penglin has been very accurate with their lead time estimates, which helped us to plan other dependencies. At the end of the quotation process, we were pleasantly surprised to find that they required no deposit. This was our first taste of their business style which is aptly characterized by their motto, "Incorporating courtesy, dependability and integrity into everything we do." We are probably considered demanding customers due to our attention-to-details style, high quality standards, and program manager mindset, so once work started we did not hesitate to clarify requirements, raise issues, or identify potential problems to Kevin--who was on-site every day--or Prem. Unlike many contractors, instead of treating our frequent comments and questions as irritants, they WELCOMED our proactive approach, recognizing that it is easier to make course correction and less expensive to address issues in real time than at the end of the project when it's much more costly to make any modifications. We used the services of Penguin Landscaping for redoing our entire backyard , which included demoing the old concrete base, removing the wooden deck Applying pavers on one half Grass on the other half Planting fruit trees and veggies along the fencing Installing irrigation They were excellent in their work and willing to discuss possible options to improve the look of the backyard. It's clear from the other reviews and pictures here that Kevin would rather install ultra low maintenance hardscapes than maintain actual landscapes. In my case, mow and blow was basically mow-only. The blowing was minimal and detail raking was non-existent. Leaves and other yard debris were consistently ignored in planted areas, and porches and driveway areas went largely un-blown. Weeds coming up through cracks and seams were whacked -- only to quickly regrow, rather than sprayed. On an average day, the crew would spend perhaps ten minutes total, and that included arrival, unloading, and reloading the truck. An adequate job would require at least double that amount of time. I tolerated the laziness and lack of attention or initiative demonstrated by Kevin and his crew for far too long. If you have anything green growing in your yard -- other than weeds -- I suggest you find an actual gardener who cares about maintaining it. read more

Kevin remodeled our front and back yards within a very reasonable budget. He installed pavers, artificial turf, flagstones, gazebo, and also replaced our sod.
