Today I went to Affordable Optical with a couple of problems and Alex stayed with me and took great care to fix my glasses. First: My Silhouette (expensive) glasses broke off at the temple and he gave me two options: I could transfer my lenses to a new pair of frames, or they could be repaired for a lot less with a new temple. Never any pressure to purchase the new frames and I ended up with the repair, but found a new Silhouette I'll purchase in the future. Second: I had purchased a RayBan frame and had Affordable Optical make prescription lenses for them. I brought them back because I wasn't seeing properly. Affordable Optical in Gurnee Mills came to my rescue. Woke up this morning, reached for my glasses, then dropped them. They snapped in half, and I was lost. I can't see anything more than three inches away without them. I saw AO on yelp and took an Uber over just as they were opening hoping they could fit me in. On two different occations we brought in broken frames (Emergency) and Igor was able to find replacements in stock at an unbelievable savings. My wife and I got glasses here back in July, and we were very pleased with the quality of customer service that we received, courtesy of Igor, who proved to be attentive, knowledgeable, informative, very polite and vested in pleasing us. I visited Affordable Optical just yesterday, because my glasses kept slipping.I was greeted by a salesperson, who examined how my glasses fit, and then he asked me to hand them to him. He told me he'd return in a few minutes, returned in the time promised, and when I put my glasses on, they.were.snug! Talk about no hassle! The salesperson didn't give me the third degree about presenting proof-of-purchase. When I told him my name (to look it up), he just smiled and told me that my word, that I bought my glasses there, was good. Now, please don't fault Igor for fitting my glasses too loose when I bought them in July, because I specifically asked him to let my glasses fit loose, plus ... uhm ... I've fallen asleep with them on (while reading) and my head did a bit of adjustment on my glasses, too. Igor politely warned me that this would happen, but interested in pleasing me, he didn't push. (He knew that I'd be back.) In regard to comments about 'racial issues': I've seen people of color and other ethnicities at Affordable Optical (beside their various ethnic employees). The four times that I've visited, I overheard discussions between employees and customers as I waited my turn etc, and I observed body language. Took in my 5 year old for his eye exam for kindergarten he was apprehensive about what was going to be done. Last year he had an eye infection and had an extensive eye exam and was worried he was going to have a the same experience. Once in the the room with doctor Goldberg he wanted to cry I was assuring him all he had to do was read the letters of the screen through the equipment. The dr Goldberg told me to be quite and told my son your not doing nothing don't listen to her nothing is going to happen. When she started the exam she told start from the beginning he didn't understand what she was saying. All I said was start from the top row. She once again told me to be quite. The most unprofessional doctor I've been to. Never again will I go back. I was just going to tell my husband we both should go there to do our exams and get our glasses but after dealing with that I don't ever want to go there and spend my money. read more

DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS PLACE!!!! THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND HERE'S MY STORY: I went here because it is close to my home and located in Gurnee Mills but they are complete scammers. I got an eye exam and picked out new frames but instead of telling me they did not accept my insurance they made it seem like I would have to pay more if I used my insurance so they were going to do me a favor and give me the frames at a "discounted" price. Ultimately they charged me $40 for the exam and $180 for the frames which I paid half up front. After I left I called my insurance company and they told me that I was completely covered for up to $200 and that Affordable Optical pretty much decieved me. So when I call back to get a refund I was told they already ordered my frames and that I would not get a refund. Ultimately I spoke with the manager and spent over 30 minutes being insulted called a liar by this woman. Finally she caved after I threatened to expose their deceptive practices with the BBB and here on Yelp which I did anyway. I would advise everyone to stay far away from this place...they do not care about repeat customers...only the bottom line, even if they have to lie to do it. 4/13/13 In response to owner comment: Still no apology?? The doctor was professional and friendly. Exam was quick and painless. The front office staff were also friendly. I came here on a budget to get glasses for work however I noticed they had some really nice looking high end glasses as well which I will consider in the future. I was told i needed to be patient as it would take time to have my eyes to ajust. At about a week of having issues I ended up going to Target the optometrist asked where I went they started laughing. Make sure you keep calling them until your glasses arrive. Unlike other eye care facilities I've gone to, they don't call you when your glasses come in. I went to see if they had even ordered them since it was taking so long (crappy service received at first appointment) and low and behold the glasses were there in a drawer with at least 15 other pairs it appeared. Why not call people and tell them the glasses are in? According to the guy with the messed up lip they tell you to call them. So just call everyday until they see that policy is stupid. This place is okay for glasses (they're reasonably priced even if they don't have much of a selection) but I wouldn't recommend them for contacts. I wanted to try contacts again after a long break, during which my eyes have gotten bad enough to need bifocals or multifocal glasses. The optometrist said nobody makes multifocal lenses in my prescription so I'd have to deal with single vision lenses and reading glasses. What she meant was *they* don't sell multifocal lenses in my prescription. She wrote me a prescription for some off-brand nobody ever heard of and they charged me for two boxes. After a few days of struggling, I called Lenscrafters, even though I've always avoided the big chains before. Because of the weird brand I'd been prescribed, I had to spring for a new exam, but the optometrist at Lenscrafters gave me a sample pair of Bausch & Lomb multifocals that worked perfectly, so I bought two boxes from them. Affordable Optical wouldn't give me a refund or a credit for the two useless boxes I bought from them (even though both boxes were unopened), so between the lenses and the exam I wasted a nice chunk from my flex plan this year. I walked and was immediately greeted Inna, the story was my bad vision while driving at night, I got an eye exam, quickly chose my frame ("mustang" brand of some kind) and they said they will call within a week when the prescription lenses are ready. they called after 3 days, i picked up my glasses and happy ever after. Gurnee store: My insurance required that I buy my glasses here. I've worn glasses since I was 12 so I've been to many places to buy glasses. The girl working behind the counter seemed annoyed that she had to work there and did very little to help me. When I picked up my glasses, she did not make sure that they fit properly (everywhere I've picked glasses up from (dr's office, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, some tiny storefront in Chicago), I've gotten far more customer care. I've actually gotten more customer service buying glasses online from Warby Parker. To top it off, the glasses seem to be the wrong prescription. I cannot wear them without a horrible headache. Like another reviewer, I had to pay an extra $50 from what my insurance covered so that my glasses weren't so thick. So now I have a brand new pair of glasses that I cannot wear and old glasses that are super scratched up. read more

We went to use the coupon for the 2 pairs of eyeglasses and found a deplorable selection for that offer. The glasses were all too tiny for a grown man, and very few were male glasses to begin with. We asked if we could take just one frame from the $69 instead of the 2 pairs for $99. Even though it was $30 less, the answer came back that we would need to pay $30 more to get just one pair instead of 2. They don't care about our busines and will never have it in the future. They simply are not caring or willing to accomodate in any way. Their selection for the sale glasses is extremely poor; they look like $10 readers. Talking to their manager is a waste of time. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SERVICE! Everthing about my experience with affordable care has been the absolute worse. I went in with a different prescription and at the time nothing was said about that being a problem. I went in a total of three times each time the receptionist (old russian lady) was rude. My insurance was covering everything, except a service they offered me. Basically to reduce my lense size and to reduce glare. I went in for my glasses and rushed out of there (as I was on my break) When I got to work I got my glasses out and saw that my left lense was HUGE in comparison to my right. It looks like i a magnifying glass. So I called and complained to the manager and he was rushing off the phone. I asked why when Im trying to explain to you why I am dissatisfied are you rushing off the phone? He said he had another call and to just stop by the next day. So I did that, I went in asking for an owner and for a refund. The owner refused to do so he did not apologize for his rude staff. Went as far as contacting security but even security could see he was in the wrong. Mall management contacted the owner who refuses to do anything. All in all this business is horrible I do not know how they are still open. It is clear the owner, manager, whole staff do not care about their customers. Please do not go to this place for your glasses. They scam you about your insurance will cover $200.00 of the bill but they don't take it off the bill. Then they turn around and charge your insurance the $200.00. Which they tell you they took off the bill. So I call insurance and the bill I got from Affordable Optical and the bill the the insurance got from Affordable Optical didn't match. They had added $400.00 on top of what I paid for my glasses and my husbands. We paid for the glasses in full at time of service figureing that my insurance would give us the $400.00 credit. But instead they sent it too Affordable Optical. So not only did Affordable Optical get the overpriced glasses paid for by me they also got a extra $400.00 to boot. This review is strictly about the Wheeling location and their horrible service. I do not recommend this place or Dr. Michaels. I am not please with his or his staff's service. I went in for an appointment over a year ago and decided not to go back because of how unprofessional the establishment and it's worker's were with me when I had a problem with my eyeglasses. They were too focused on making me keep a pair of glasses that didn't fit my face, fell down a lot, and caused numerous headaches. Come to find out a year later "Dr." Michaels put a astigmatism in my eye glasses and did not let me know. I already got my eyes tested before going to him this was my 2nd eye exam that year and I was not told about a astigmatism before. So for him to add a astigmatism to my eye glasses was so unnecessary and actually damaged my eye sight. My eyes spent so much time focusing in those glasses that it caused more headaches, dizzyness, fatigue, redness, and burning. I bought a pair of eyes glasses that I could even use. The eye exam was so quick with him and I felt like I was not being fully checked out. He spent about less than 5 minutes and just referenced my old prescription from a year ago. I didn't provide him with the recent one that I got that year. Anyways long story short I went back to my childhood eye doctor and they said he did not need to add the astigmatism to my eye glasses because I DIDN"T NEED it! Now I am paying more to fix the lenses that they put in because I can't properly focus. All along I thought I just had to get used to the anti reflective coating they added and possibly a stronger prescription when really it was the fact that a no good doctor added something Extra to my eyeglasses that was not actually needed. Affordable Optical is listed in the provider booklet of my insurance, so I went there for my eye exam. I also had a flier advertising "two pairs of no-line eyeglasses for $159." Having to live on a strict budget, I naturally wanted to take advantage of that offer. Although I had made an appointment for the exam, I waited for 45 minutes (!); during part of that time I selected frames for my new glasses with the assistance of a gentleman. He did not introduce himself, but I guess he is the owner of this shop. Right away, he tried to discourage me from buying the special offer lenses because they were "inferior and had a limited field of vision." I understood that this meant a limited window (peripheral) and decided I could live with that. Only when I said I would take my prescription to a different place, did he relent and helped me select two frames, one of which was going to be a pair of prescription sunglasses ($25 surcharge). I picked up my glasses yesterday, tested them briefly in the shop and went home. Once I sat down at my worktable with my notebook computer, I realized that the new glasses were fine for distance and reading, but impossible to use for middle distance. I called Affordable Optical and spoke with the gentleman who had assisted me. He explained that he "had told me about the limited field of vision." I went to this place because the options when you have the "state" insurance are very limited and they were the closest to my home. The man who greeted us treated my children and I like dirt. First question when we walked in was "You have state insurance" (with a Russian accent I believe). When I said yes, he just said "sit down" - very rude! I didn't see the doctor but my two teenagers did and they said she was very nice. Once they were done with their exams and had to pick out glasses, the man threw a tray of frames across the counter and said "this is all you have to pick from". He didn't help them pick at all or make any suggestions, just threw the tray and walked away. Once they picked out their frames, he said "call in 2 to 3 months, you're done". OMG! I guess this place waits for All Kids to pay for the glasses before they'll even get them ordered. Well, it has now been 3 months and the glasses are finally in. I can't wait to see how we're treated when we go to pick them up. ***On a side note*** I overheard this man talking to other customers while we were there and he was just as rude or worse to other people.
