Their pastries are all fantastic and my favorite is the cookies and cream pastry. I usually order my regular, an iced Americano with oat milk, and it's delicious every time. I also started getting the smoked trout spread with focaccia, which has been a great dish to snack on while finishing up work. In addition to the smoked trout spread, they offer bagels with different cream cheese spreads, a kale Caesar, and their popular tiramisu dessert. The staff are always friendly and will bring your drink to you if you decide to sit down. I also like that they stopped offering free Wi-Fi on the weekends. It promotes a space that helps people be more present, and I love that. read more

I. Love. This place. My friend lives close by so we came here a few days to work when I was visiting Richmond over the fall. I started with the seasonal matcha iced with a bagel. My friend got the hot matcha, personally I prefer the cold which had more flavor. The bagel was pretty good, as was the cream cheese but not my favorite thing on the menu. Once we had this we moved onto the espresso with raspberry cream, fantastic drink. They should make it all year. The only down side is a friend who wanted a matcha with this topping was told it wasn't possible which I'm not sure how that would be. We ordered the bean dip and salmon cream cheese type dip (blanking on the names... it's been a few months) both were great and came with fresh bread which was so yummy. Personally I preferred the salmon dip but I would definitely order the bean dip again as well. I ordered the green bean salad for lunch and would have this again and again if I lived in town. The flavors here were all so good I almost wish the food menu was larger so I could try more. The area inside is pretty large with many many tables to work however it's usually quite busy. The baristas learned my name almost immediately and had my order memorized after two or three visits during a stretch when my home machine was down. Flavor-wise, the coffees skew bright and high-toned for my palate. Think citrusy, fruity aromatics and a cleaner acidity that reads like a shop roasting and dialing primarily with pour-overs in mind, minimal roast development, clarity over comfort. That is a style preference rather than a quality knock. I tend to like things a little more roasty-toasty, so be aware that a cappuccino or latte here will be flawlessly made, with tight microfoam and careful temperatures, yet it will still present as a touch brighter and more acidic than you might expect if you come from a different coffee scene. All that said, Afterglow is a top-notch coffee shop. Beautiful space, kind people, serious craft. If a lively, modern roast profile is your thing, you will be in heaven. I loved the interior and the aesthetic. It's perfect for doing work and there was plenty of seating and there's even a small bar view of the roasting setup in the back. It's clear that they're passionate about coffee through the care they take to make an excellent cup of coffee and patience they take to answer any questions you might have. The barista was super friendly and answered my questions about their beans and recommended one for making espresso at home. I ended up grabbing two bags of the Afterglow Perpetual Motion to try and a hot vanilla latte to go, which was excellent. I would love to go back and try some of their other speciality drinks the next time I'm in the area. I've been on the hunt for good study spots and Afterglow is now one of my favorites! They have a decent amount of seating, mainly low top and booths, with free wifi. The only downside is that they do not have many outlets so make sure your electronics are fully charged if you plan to work. The menu is pretty extensive and they have a good mix of expected and unexpected drinks. The inside is quite surprisingly spacious and it has a lot of natural light with greenery strung throughout. The staff is really friendly and offered me their recommendations off of the menu. I ended up trying their pandan matcha latte and sourdough toast with smoked trout spread. I love a good carb at any time of the day and their toast really satisfied that craving for me. I had never had smoked trout spread before and it was a welcome salty, savory addition to the toast. I will say that the portion size for the spread is quite large so you'd be able to share it if you got two slices of toast. Wow this place is really something special. The first thing I noticed was how aesthetically beautiful it was. It's spacious, open, filled with plants and art. Looking at their website, I learned that they rotate pastries from different local bakery, all among the most well renowned bakeries in Richmond. Like Birdies, Axelsdotter, and Sugar & Twine. Looks like they also have Nate's Bagels on menu regularly, and an association with Sub Rosa (the locals will know these are the BEST spots). I believe Sub Rosa uses Afterglow coffee at their shop. Today they had axelsdotter pastries, which looked amazing. I decided to go for the apple cake and it was delicious! Super fresh. Tasted like if an apple pie and a pound cake had a baby. Today I tried the hot hickory latte with whole milk and it was AMAZING. The espresso isn't acidic tasting like at some places. It has a smooth and light taste. Perfectly in balance with the sweetness and milk of the beverage. The hickory is similar to a honey latte. Another really cool thing about this place is that they're a cooperative. Meaning everyone who works there is a owner of the business. Everyone gets paid a living wage, and for that reason, they clearly state that they do not accept gratuity. Love that so much. My quest to try different local coffee shops took me here today. Parking was a bit challenging on a Sunday morning, but we finally found a spot. Once we entered the building, the smell of coffee was super welcoming, especially on a cold morning. I was a bit disappointed at the limited flavors available for lattes and also the lack of low fat or non fat milk options. I ended up getting a whole milk vanilla latte, which looked beautiful, but didn't have a strong enough coffee taste for my liking, and was tepid when served. The whole milk was also a bit off putting as I'm not used to drinking it. The saving grace was the deliciously moist banana chocolate chip muffin from Sugar and Twine that I bought to go with my coffee. When we were there, there were no seats available so we stood and enjoyed our coffee and muffins as it was too cold to sit outside. Afterglow is such a lovely and welcoming coffee shop at the back edge of Scott's Addition (where the back-in parking is) (I cannot back-in park). I love this little weird edge of Scott's Addition with its one way street and back-in parking. Seems like a dead end in the middle of nowhere (when you're right off Boulevard). A perfect place to hide. And this is where you'll find Afterglow. Stopped in to meet an associate for coffee (tea for me) and picked the Malabar--an herbal tonic blend of Chinese ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, black peppercorn, and licorice root. Add honey and yum! I love Afterglow's new after hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Afterglow Coffee is definitely one of my top local haunts. I adore the people who work here, I'm obsessed with the pandan matcha latte (also adore the mocha), and love that they're a co-op. When they added organic and natural wines to their shelves, I got even more excited. They'll host wine tastings and have a really great selection to pick from. I adore the natural lighting that spills into the space (especially during a tasting). On Friday, it's great to come here to work with a morning drink, then order a late lunch once the 2pm After Dark menu gets brought out. I tried their After Dark food menu recently and loved it. I had a very tasty nori kale caesar salad with yummy soy sauce eggs and a side of incredible bread and butter. It was a wholesome meal that made me beyond happy. I appreciated the good pandan flavors but their matcha was more an aftertaste than a prominent flavor. As someone who had a lot of pandan desserts growing up I was nervous the pandan would be too artificial or too sweet but the sweetness was appropriate and the flavors were more authentic than expected. Again I really like how spacious Afterglow is. It has a good amount of table seating, some bar seating by the back (plus you get to see them process their beans I think), and a cute nook in the back. Unfortunately, I didn't see any pour overs (which is my go-to), so I decided to give one of their specialty lattes a try since that's not something I'm able to make at home! BLACK WALNUT MAPLE CAPPUCCINO - 5.50 I wish I knew there would be an additional charge for oat milk because I would have stuck with regular milk. The barista had asked me if I preferred regular milk or oat milk in my drink, so I had (wrongly) assumed that the pricing would be the same. In the future, I guess I'll ask before assuming, but I felt misled by the way they had posted the question. Additionally, because I like my lattes/capps strong, I asked for an extra shot (which I knew I would have to pay for). The total for my cappuccino was $8.51 after tax. Besides that complaint, the presentation of the cappuccino was beautiful and it's been awhile since I've seen latte art. I was hoping the drink would have a strong espresso flavor (given that I got an extra espresso shot, too) that would overpower the syrup. However, I felt like the maple syrup was the most prominent flavor of my drink and it was much too sweet for me. The espresso flavor was strong but there wasn't a lot of after taste. I liked the black walnut bitters! Overall, not my cup of cappuccino since it was too sweet and too expensive, but a few of my friends really enjoyed this sweet drink. If you have a sweet tooth, I can see this being your go-to drink! Next time when I'm in Richmond again, I'll try their cortado or cop a bag of beans. read more
