Have eaten at several restaurants in this area, and decided to finally visit this one. Outside, the building is very welcoming and even boasts an outdoor fireplace with seating. Upon entering, we waited just a couple minutes until the hostess came to seat us. They weren't busy in the dining area at the time. She was not friendly nor cordial. We were sat at a booth in the back right next to the entrance to the kitchen. After sitting, the pungent aroma of what I can only describe as a "stagnant water smell" was very heavy. We decided to move to another location in the restaurant, and when questioned by our original server, she was very short and rude once i told her the issue that caused it. When getting settled in, it was noticeable she went over to the older woman hostess who was hanging out in their bar area and complained about the situation (both also turned in our direction to look where we were headed to while chatting). Our new server was Bailee, and she was kind about the situation. We ordered Homemade Chips and ranch for an app. It was requested that they be left on the "floppy" side instead of fried hard. When they arrived, it was noticeable that they paid zero attention to the request. They were extremely hard, and verged on the line of being burnt. Both adults ordered The Tavern Burger cooked medium rare (warm red center) and Mac n cheese as well as sweet potato fries as sides. We waited a good bit for our food, and once it arrived and we began eating, we noticed the burgers were well done. At this point we were hungry, so we dealt with it. The flavors were decent. The Mac n cheese is mediocre and so were the sweet potato fries. Our child had the kids chicken fingers with a side of the Mac n cheese as well. The chicken tenders are actually very good, and even better with the BBQ sauce they offer. Our service was okay, but definitely could have been better. To be honest, I doubt we will ever go back. Thy really should work on their customer service skills, update their interior and menu. Then it might be worth a glance. C'est la Vie! read more

We tried Afton Tavern twice now. We will not be returning. They have VERY skimpy portions on their sandwiches forcing you to up charge to add double meat (which by the way is ridiculous) My husband ordered a Ruben with double meat and it came with 2 1/8" thin slices of corned beef for almost $20. If you want a good cocktail this is not the place to go unless you like fruit juice in a martini glass. The only thing giving this review 2 stars is that the servers both times were very good. With all the restaurants a person has to choose from a restaurant. Owner has to understand that you need to serve a plate of food and a cocktail that makes a person want to come back and order it again. We will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

I also ordered an $8 piece of cheesecake with fresh strawberries that was just a sliver with no strawberries at all. I wont be going back. Where do I even begin with describing how embarrassed the ownership, management and staff of Afton Tavern should be. We visited this evening with a party of 8. Restaurant was VERY empty. It took over an hour to get our food, and the server did not check in on us nor offer any apologies for the lengthy delay. When we asked about the delay, the server said "yeah, this isn't the place to come if you're in a hurry." We didn't think waiting over an hour indicated we were in a hurry. We had to ask for the manager twice before he decided to make an appearance and he offered absolutely no apology. The entrees, when received, were wrong for four of us. The food we did receive was not good, the chicken was dry as can be, and many things were luke warm at best. When we got the checks, they had added a 20% gratuity because of the party size. I told the manager that they should be ashamed of themselves for adding that in due to our experience, and he said the system just does that, he can't change it. Lastly, the manager did offer us three cookie skillet coupons for a future visit, but did not have any actual coupons so he had to hand write them. We indicated we would never be back, so he could keep them. Overall, a horrible experience and if this restaurant survives another year, they're lucky. Do yourself a favor and do NOT go here. I will make sure everyone I know is told not to support this joke of a restaurant. read more

The ambience here is nice-if you sit outdoors. We ordered the crab cakes with broccoli and red potatoes. The crab cakes had bouts of salt every other bite, weird. Didn't have a consistent flavor. My broccoli was swimming in water. My friend ordered the same but with Mac and cheese and a side salad. Her Mac and cheese tasted like Kraft, it was not home made. The waiter was awesome, he swapped out her Mac for mashed potatoes. Those weren't any better, they looked and tasted dirty. Strange dinner. Innovative Menu. Great service. Went to Afton Tavern today with wife's son and his family to celebrate the youngest's 8th birthday. Menu offered something for all. I have Lexi's Chicken and Dumplings as a starter followed by a great Rueben. My wife had a Steak Philly as did my daughter-in law. Sue's son had Manhattan Clam Chowder and a Chicken Salad plate. As far the kids, one had her favorite Mac and Cheese while the Birthday boy had couple of sliders. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Service was great and I love the relaxed atmosphere of this place. Afton Tavern is a nice facility, however don't get confused between the Tavern and the pub. (The pub is at the top of the hill, and the Tavern is at the bottom of the hill). The staff was pretty nice. Was able to get a seat at the bar, though the restaurant part looked good too, they wouldn't allow you to sit there as a single individual. I spoke with the bartender and she highly recommended the wings. The wings were cooked well, and tasted nice too. I also ordered the bacon burger. (the first order came out incorrect, as I requested without cheese, and it came with cheese), however they replaced the burger pretty quickly. The beer selection is limited, however I do like the opportunity to drink from a 25oz frosted glass. The red oak lager is one of my favorite, and is a go to drink all the time, so was happy this was available. The food that was offered on the menu was very affordable and was very reasonable. Overall, a very nice burger place to visit, and look forward to going back in the future. read more

Don't get the crab dip. Smelled like a back alley in Amsterdam. Huge fan of crab dip, have eaten it at a hundred different places in my life. I've never had ANY food item presented to me, at ANY restaurant, ever, that smelled this bad. Think hippie sex in a hot car. And the "chef" told our server it smelled fine to him. Another employee that usually likes their crab dip, also said it smelled awful. I couldn't even try it. My boss took a tiny nibble and immediately regret it and spit it into his napkin. I came here one evening to meet a friend that lives in this area. I had her pick the spot because she is more familiar with this area than I am. The food was decent, nothing special, but overall pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but would stop if I was in the area. I understand why this place has mixed reviews. The staff is friendly and the place has a lovely outdoor patio; however the food is mediocre at best. I went for lunch. We started with the boom boom shrimp as an appetizer. You can get it grilled or breaded. Per our server's recommendation we got it breaded. It was tasty; however it has more sauce than I personally care for. It made the breading a bit soggy. For the entree, we both tried the turkey burger. I choose the sautéed zucchini, squash and onions as my side. My friend ordered a side of the mac n cheese. The burger was decent and the bun was soft and warm. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't good enough to order again. The zucchini was bland. I only ate half of it. The mac n cheese was very disappointing. Our waitress highly recommended it. It tasted like Kraft Mac n Cheese. I have nothing against Kraft, but that's not what I expect from a restaurant that brags about homemade Mac n Cheese. We sent it back and got sweet potato fries instead. The fries were good. I probably wouldn't order another meal here. On my last visit I met a friend for martinis and appetizers. We have eaten at Afton Tavern on about 5 different occasions and have loved it every time. I always try something new off their extensive menu and have been happy 4 out of the 5 times. My only complaint is with the "Fish & Chips" that is offered. It is not your typical fish and chips so I was disappointed. I was served a filet-o-fish and this is not what fish and chips is to me. However the fish was crisp and delicious so I was too upset. I've had the burgers, tavern tacos and the chicken & dumplings. All were tasty and would definitely order these items again. I will admit I am not that knowledgeable of the Concord area, but this place is mediocre. There have to be better places to eat. We ordered the kaboom shrimp as an appetizer. There were literally 7 of them for nine dollars. I would rather eat at Bonefish The shrimp were pretty good there just were not many of them for the price. We also ordered the cheese dip. It came with tortilla chips and raw broccoli. At first I thought the broccoli was an odd choice but it was actually pretty good. The cheese dip was just OK. For my meal I got the steak. It was fine. It was nothing special but it was a meal. For dessert we got the skillet cookie which how can you go wrong with a hot gooey chocolate chip cookie with ice cream. It was by far the best part. If I ever go back it will be to just order this and skip the rest. read more

This place is a joke. I came here for the first time and I had Dom as a waiter who was the most incompetent person I have ever met in my life. From bringing the wrong food to spilling a drink into our meals this experience was terrible. They even offered us a cookie skillet for free because of the errors and even that came out terrible. I've been here twice for lunch and each time the service has been quite slow. I ordered the lunch salad the first time and on my last visit, I had the turkey burger. Very mediocre food that just took too long to be served. The tables are 'dressed' with brown paper and crayons so you can draw while you wait.....and wait. The beverages are served pub-style meaning your soda/water/tea/etc will come out in a huge glass that's similar to that of a beer mug. I mean, it's B-I-G and well worth the less than $2 charge.
