If you want Mexican in St Thomas Agave is the spot to go! I'd recommend the Red Hook location as it is a more happening, less touristy area. The margs were good. I went back here TWICE because the food was so good. We happened to be waiting for the Italian restaurant next door during our stay here in St. Thomas but Agave was open and my boyfriend and I are always down for Mexican food and particularly ANY DRINKS, we said why not? They stole us... We ordered and were just impressed with every dish, bite, drink and sip. On our first visit we ordered the Mexi-Fries for the appetizer. I was absolutely DELICIOUS! It came out hot and every ingredient was accounted for on the my taste bud! For our entrees, we ordered the crunch wrap extreme and I had the carne asada fajitas. As you'll see from the pictures below, our mouths were watering. The crunchwrap extreme was delectable. My boyfriend added guacamole to the wrap and it even more pizzazz to the flavor. You could tell the guacamole was fresh and had the right amount of lime. My carne asade fajita was just as divine. The carne was tender and not chewy, the flavor from it complimented the rice, beans, cheese and salsa it came with very very well. For the drinks, we had all margaritas and they served us well. We tried the mango, passionfruit and strawberry margaritas. On our second visit was during the brunch hours, they did delay opening about 30 minutes but it was worth it. We ordered the bowls, chicken and carnitas bowl with the Mexi-Fries and Buffalo boneless chicken wings as the appetizer. Can I say that the Mexi-Fries was even better the second time around!! Agave is a bar that serves food. There are enough tables to make you think it's a restaurant, but the food takes so long to prepare and is of such low quality that it's clear Agave is a bar and not a restaurant. The space is a big room with TVs, a three sided bar on the middle, and high top tables throughout the space. It's a bar, so it's very loud. We ordered drinks and everyone seemed to be content, but not excited, with what they got. As another reviewer mentioned, they push bottled water. There appeared to be only one waiter and two servers working the tables. They were under staffed, or so I thought because he wasn't very attentive, but the kitchen was really slow, so maybe they were using the lack of service to throttle the demand on the kitchen. Whatever the case, service was very slow. The first thing delivered to our table were empanadas, and they were delicious! We were pretty excited for the rest of our order at that point. Next up was the chips and salsa. There were only a few chips provided, which disappointed us, but the salsa was nothing special, so running out of chips seemed ok. At first the salsa tasted like it had a smokiness to it, but then it started to taste like it was just barbecue sauce mixed in. Unfortunately, things didn't get better. As mentioned, our food took a long time to come out. A Carne Asada "Bowl" came out next. It was served on a plate and it looked more like an appetizer. It was served ten minutes before the rest of our order, so maybe the kitchen thought it was an appetizer? The rest of the order were tacos, a burrito, and enchiladas. The enchiladas were ok, but really, almost everything served in a Mexican restaurant is good if you cover it with melted cheese. We were looking forward to the chorizo tacos, but they didn't taste good to us. So unfortunately, Agave looks like another Red Hook bar where you should get an appetizer (empanadas), have a happy hour drink, and then move on to have dinner somewhere else. read more

We came in late to Red Hook and were brought in by the tequila options. Highly recommend for drinking. Service was great - attentive and helpful. Some of their special tequilas (flavored) were AWESOME. Prices were actually extremely fair for the area and the type of drink. And if you're ready to get lit, stop in for a margarita pitcher. We didn't eat dinner, but we did get appetizers. The only reason I dropped a star is because there was a hair in our queso, which they fixed, but weren't apologetic. We weren't looking for it to come off our bill or anything, but it was a little weird that it wasn't even addressed. Our waitress was awesome otherwise, but that rubbed us the wrong way. The food was good, so I can't complain about that. I'm sure most people don't have the bad luck like we do, so I would still recommend it to people coming into town. Service experience was the worst I have had in 20 years. Honestly, it wasn't just our server, although she was terrible. It seemed like no one had any restaurant experience or they just didn't try. I would think this is a management issue first, lack of leadership. Many examples... I watched staff bus tables carrying away two things at a time to clean tables. Food came out slow and out of sequence. We did not eat together because our food would have been cold if we waited for everyone... we were a party of four. December 4, 2022 and our group of 6 made a reservation and went for dinner. We were quickly seated. And soon bartender/server Travis? provided menus, and took beverage orders. The laughs started then as the website shows a few drink specials, and candidly should be worded better. Then we all started laughing about that hats/sombrero that he and the other Bartender we're wearing. We ordered the sweet corn (chips and dip) which was tasty and asked some questions about menu item preparation. Travis? return quickly after a trip to the kitchen and a talk with the chef. We joked around that we were not trying to steal recipes. The quesadilla with added chicken was absolutely fabulous! The Carne Asada sizzling fijitas were delicious and enough for 2 of us. We wanted lobsters but the surf was to rough earlier in the day to catch any (hum, Odessa, I don't know about that). They were unable to make the wedge salad, so the chipotle Caesar salad with added camerones (shrimp) was chosen, and it was throughly enjoyed. Please read below: Honestly I'm not the guy to come on yelp and write a negative review- but this experience was so awful people need to see this before deciding to go. Nobody wants a crappy dinner when on vacation. Waited as the staff stared at us, had to ask twice just to be seated. Floors were cleaned with something that made it an ice skating rink, very dangerous especially for my girl with heels. I had sneakers and i nearly fell. Definitely a hazard. Then had to get up after 10-20 min of sitting at our table just to ask for someone to be our waiter/waitress because no one attended to us. I ordered steak tacos, told the waitress very specifically i was allergic to avocado. My gf ordered chips/guac and a quesadilla. As for the server, I forget her name, but if you get her as your server you'll know instantly- she's never been in the hospitality business and is rude AF. Absolutely horrible waitress (if she can even call herself that). All the entrees came out before the appetizers....My tacos had guac at the bottom which i had an allergic reaction to. When i told the waitress, she said "ok, it's not my fault, i didn't make it". Who's fault is it- mine? I told her it was somewhat irresponsible and she told me "I'm just a horrible person"- (word for word) because i was having an allergy attack and upset? Very strange. Asked to speak to manager. He came over, no apology, very nasty attitude. You can tell he has very little experience in hospitality as well. The only positive thing he did was retrieved me Benadryl so i didn't potentially go anaphylaxis in his restaurant. All chips were stale, clearly bought elsewhere and old. Salad tasted like the dressing was put on last week. Food quality 3/10 maybe 4 at best. Hospitality 2/10. Probably the worst hospitality I've ever had anywhere, and i eat out 3-5 times per week. You can also hear the wait staff audibly cursing at the chefs for botching other peoples orders as well (f word etc). Recommend not going here unless you want a sub par, pretty dull food, coupled with with terrible service. I would rate the place overall 1/5. Not sure why anyone would want to go here. Huge flop. And you can see on yelp a lot of people have similar experiences. Bail on these places (agave, raw, and the Italian spot next door). Hope this helps people avoid a bad meal and experience. read more

I try to make this as short as possible. Arrived at 6:30 for our reservation on Friday, March 8, 2024. Quickly seated and served our first drinks at 7:15. Got chips and dip 20 mins. later. Our dinners started to arrive at 8:30 (2hrs from when we were seated). Each dinner was served 2 to 3 minutes apart and only 1 was hot and edible. At this point I asked to see the manager. He came to our table and apologized but did nothing. When we got our check he again came over and we complained and repeated our story. He comped 1 dinner and that was it. I actually LOVE(D) this place I've been a regular ever since i moved here 5 months ago. Lately they have been disrespectful in regards to looking at me , making eye contact and walking past me and i have to say something to a host in order to get serviced . And it's not always super busy when i come. It's unfortunate that such a great establishment has people that choose to overlook you when you are waiting for 10+ just to be talked to. Our last dinner out we decided to check out Agave. I was a little skeptical due to the reviews however we were pleasantly surprised. Most of the bad review talk about wait time & service but the food being good. We did not experience any wait time at all & the service was phenomenal. The food was really tasty. My only complaint was the lack of shrimp on my taco. Each taco came w/ 2 shrimp. They charged me 1.50 for less than 2 ounce of Cotija cheese. They need not tell me about the up charge. Unfortunately we had a very poor experience at Agave. The food was mediocre at best. The drinks were mostly ok. Like the rest of St Thomas everything is overpriced. Our server made many major mistakes and the manager lady had a chance to course correct it but she didn't bother hence 2 stars. Our drinks were prepared at the bar but were sitting at the counter for 15 mins before our server stopped chitchatting with other tables and decided to bring them over. They were ruined due to ice melting so we had to send them back. The food came super late, the guacamole was worse than what you will get at a supermarket. The waiter forgot our tacos and didn't come back to check how things are going because he was back at chit chatting with other tables. The manager lady came over and asked us "everything awesome, yeah?" So we explained her the situation. Eventually our tacos arrived. What really tilted us off was the waiter eventually apologized but added a 20% gratuity by default to the check with the hope of we won't notice or don't care so he still gets his cut and get away his horrible service. Keep in mind that we were only 3 people and adding gratuity to the check by default is not standard practice. I ended up paying to not to make a scene because my wife was already pretty upset and I didn't want her to know what the waiter was doing. The manager lady didn't come back and used her chance to make sure they course corrected either. Overall 3 stars for food, 1 star for horrendous service with 20% gratuity charge hence 2 stars. After our trip to St. John my husband and I came here for dinner. We were starving. We ordered the flautas and calamari. Octopus was a part of the appetizer of calamari...very interesting. The service was terrible. There was not one time the waiter poured a glass of water WITHOUT us asking. I was really frustrated with the amount of times we asked for water and thought the waiter would be annoyed too and just start pouring us water on his own. My husband ordered fajitas which was not real fajitas...they were so small and tasted OK. I ordered a bowl which was fine. We also sat with dirty plates at our table for a very long time...we asked for water, he poured the water, saw dirty plates but just left them there. I try to be understanding but he was just chatting with his coworkers when he could have checked out cups, saw they were empty and refilled them. We left a 10% tip but would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Excellent night!!! We had no plans for the evening. We spent the day on St John and upon our return we stopped in to Agave. We of course did not have reservation. The hostess found a spot for us at the same time stayed very aware of the commitment the restaurant made for upcoming reservations. We ordered a picture of margaritas and a few appetizers off the happy hour menu. The server Finn was spot on all night. We even stayed for a second picture. Might be as good as it gets - long wait for our food. Seems like there are only three options of good dining in this area. Since it's nearly impossible to mess up Mexican food, we went with agave. The food was great. Traveling with your family? Don't worry, they play extremely loud music so you don't have to suffer through talking to your loved ones. We enjoyed our dinner. The reason for the three stars is we ordered at 8:35 and our food came at 9:40. This would be forgivable if I hadn't been seasick all day and hadn't eaten a meal yet. I was losing it. Hangry. Sent them back and were then reserved cold again. We gave up at that point. The shrimp fajitas were were very good - whew! Service was a bit slow, even by island standards. We saw two parties step into the restaurant but then left shortly thereafter because the the AWOL hostess did not appear. Location is great. Parking is ample.
