So our air conditioner was 23 years old. We've been putting off replacing it for at least the last 3-4 years knowing it can be costly. I knew it had a leak in the line, so we usually get it re-charged each spring. Last year, I called a large company in crystal lake recommended we replace the compressor only. I don't know if they meant the compressor inside the box, or the entire outside box. Either way, the guy didn't seem to know what the hell he was doing. When a salesman (from the same company) called me 4 days later, I just ignored the call because I didn't have confidence in them. So fast forward to this year, air conditioner started turning off after 2-5 minutes of running on a Saturday. Time to search around and look for another HVAC company with good reviews. Found AGM, which was the only company that had NOT A SINGLE NEGATIVE review. Another one in crystal lake had mostly good reviews, but you'd hear stories of the contractor being late. While Jeff is a one man show, he answers his phone anytime you call (not let it go to voicemail and wait all day for a callback). The first call, he literally came over in 5 minutes. Did diagnostics on both the compressor and the main coil in the basement. Found 3 issues.. My capacitors were a little low in amps, the relay switch was starting to wear down from arcs over the years, and of course.. I have a leak in the system. He starts by first cleaning out the mesh which could be preventing hot air from escaping. The temperature difference between the outside compressor and the inside coil was even bigger, so much so my coil might start freezing. He explains that if it were one thing, it might be worth fixing, but because multiple things are breaking down it's probably time to replace, especially now that the old coolant is $200/lb (it's only going to get more expensive since it's not an environmentally safe gas). I was down about 3lbs, which would be an expensive fill. I opted to go ahead and replace it, and the coil since that was where the leak was. The price was more reasonable than I thought it would be. He only charged me $100 for the service call (even though it was weekend rate), and on top of it he said he would take that $100 off my install. He scheduled it tentatively for the following Friday at 9am since it might rain. I confirmed with him thursday morning. Friday morning he called me at 7am and asked if he could start early. I was ok with that since it only meant it would get done sooner and I'd have more of my day open. He started right away replacing everything, and after about 2-1/2 hours he was nearly done. He explained that he was running a vacuum to remove any dirt and moisture in the line. After that, he let the gas fill the system and he checked the levels again. So for replacing the outer compressor and internal coil, we are talking 3 hours. Everything looks very professionally installed. My house is now ice cold, which is something I haven't felt in the summer in a long time. If there's ANYTHING I could say negative, it's that he picked out the replacement compressor instead of giving me options. The one he installed was on the lower scale of efficiency, but I probably would have picked that one anyway because I'm guessing it was the least expensive.. I didn't want to make a big investment since we have intentions on moving in a few years. read more

He offered to do it for me, but I do like to try to do stuff for myself, so he just took me through step by step on how to take care of it myself.
