I've been coming to Agni Yoga for a few years now and can't believe it took me this long to write a review. This is, hands down, the best hot yoga studio in Portland--and I've tried many over the years. Every single instructor is incredible (Leah, Roxanne, Julia, Tucker, Becca--and more amazing humans I'm surely forgetting). Hot yoga is both my religion and my workout, and Agni does it right. I genuinely love practicing the same Bikram poses over and over--it's grounding, powerful, and transformative. My mental and physical health have never been better, and I happily make it to class about three times a week. The studio itself is absolutely lovely: spotless, welcoming, and perfectly set up for those of us who like our hot yoga HOT. Agni never disappoints. I've also recently tried the cryotherapy and loved it, and I can't wait to check out the harmonic egg and wall yoga next. If you're even thinking about trying Agni, do it. I have been practicing Bikram yoga for 2 decades and it has been incredibly healing and restorative for both my body and mind. What Leah and the team here have done with this practice is very intentionally and subtly updated it. Everybody knows that the practice can be rigid and while that is good to keep true to the core practice, it can limit and outright alienate certain minds and bodies. The update to the 90 minute 26 & 2 enable more flexibility while staying true to the core (this is 100% the bikram sequence, don't worry) - with solid direction from Leah (Bikram yoga trained), who is an exercise expert (educated & experienced), a massage therapist and ballet dancer. So it's not just "do you" (although this is encouraged, not repremanded) instead, there are subtle modifications offered that address all bodies. They also have 60 minute classes for the 26 & 2 plus Vinyasa, wall yoga and so much more. Cryotherapy is offered and Leah offers body work. Also, and so importantly, this is absolutely THE HOTTEST studio in Portland (trust me, I have been to them all) but you can situate yourself at different places in the room to get a little more heat or a little less. Its a welcoming, sweet community and all of the teachers are premium. I truly believe this studio and practice are for everyone. One last note - the teachers here do not call people out or act aggressively about your practice. At all. They are so kind here. Not all strict like normal Bikrum. They lets us decide what our bodies are capable of today. I bought a day pass and later decided I want a punch card. They had no problem subtracting the day pass from the punch card cost minus one class. So amazing customer service too. It's a great place that I will be going on occasion. read more

If you are serious about yoga and flexibility training.....Leah Shirley is the best Yoga Instructor I've ever had. And I used to live in LA and study w/Bikram & Emmy. Leah Shirley's vast, and profound understanding of yoga is 21st century. Agni yoga is really a home run. First the solar panel heating, is a complete game changer. You can access your body like never before. Secondly, Agni yoga changed the starting point of the series, to make the series more accessible, and the highest quality. I've been doing Bikrams/ the 26/2 for 25 years, so Im pretty skeptical about any changes to the 26/2. At Agni yoga, the starting point is from a standing pelvis. Its genius. The beggining prana Yama series, has really fixed some of my neck problems, and neck mobility restrictions. Agni yoga, is like a spinal chord rehab center for me. I think all yoga teachers, and physical therapist....and doctors quite frankly.....should study with Leah Shirley. Agni yoga is soooo good. After coming from LA & SF, I have been pleasantly surprised, that this has been the best Yoga studio of my life. Im eternally grateful. I've recently tried their Yin Yoga - amazing! This place is just lovely. The staff here are incredible warm (no pun intended) and I get good vibes each time I'm enter the space. This is a very welcoming and lovely place to practice hot yoga. The teachers are ALL fantastic, calming and knowledgeable. It is very clean and aside from it being a bit expensive,(but it must be hard to keep up), I would say it is one of the very best studios I've belonged to. This studio is the best I've ever been to. The teachers here heal on a deep level. I love Terri's Sunday morning class. The level of healing I've felt during just the one weekly class provides me with peace through out my whole week. I don't know how she does it but it feels like magic! I also love Leah's classes. This studio used to be 'Bikram Yoga Greater Portland', but it now has new owners. The studio has been remodeled and is really unique and lovely. They installed radiant heat panels, which no other Bikram studio in Portland has. They keep the room hot, without the forced air blowing around. It's very peaceful and quiet. There is cedar lining the entire back wall, which smells like a cabin at Breitenbush! The humidity is great, as well. The shower has been remodeled, as have both bathrooms. As far as I can tell, the new owners, Leah and Julie, have hand picked some great instructors to teach at their studio. These folks know their Bikram! If you've practiced Bikram before, then you know the class is always the same: 90 minutes, 2 breathing exercises, and 26 postures, 25 of which are done twice. This studio is classic Bikram and very welcoming to beginners. Come to class prepared to sweat! Bring a mat, a large towel to put over your mat, and whatever towels/hand towels you might want in addition to that. Don't forget to bring a bottle of water. Wear tight-fitting and stretchy yoga shorts and, if you're a woman, a sports bra or sports tank. Beginners often make the mistake of wearing too much to class. From what I've heard, the dressing rooms are going to be remodeled further, with showers in both the men's and women's changing areas. I'm not sure when that's going to happen, but that makes me happy! Overall, I highly recommend this remodeled studio. It's very clean, has brand-new, anti-microbial carpet in the practice room and a side mirror now, which is great for checking your form. The teachers are top-notch, the conditions are great, everyone is friendly, and, best of all (for me), it's conveniently located. I came to this studio after a horrible break up. I was over weight, stiff, all of my joints caused me pain and my mental state was in the deepest gutter possible. This practice alone is truly life, mind and body changing, but add in the amazing, centered, balanced, loving teachers and owners Julie and Leah and you've got a place to go that can save your life. Taking a class from Julie, Leah or almost any of the other teachers there (I love Isabel & Roxane's class as well) will be exactly what you personally need. There would be times after or during a pose that I would suddenly be struck with loss, deep sadness, anger, disappointment and any other emotion you might feel after ending a serious and long relationship, but the teachers would talk about how this is the best place to experience these hard things because you have support of the other students, energy, teachers and yourself to work through them in a healthy way. THEY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE CORRECT. I got to process my break up in a supported place where I could really release the emotions through compression of my organs, breathing, releasing and stretching my entire body from my bones to my skin. If you've never done Bikram this is the perfect community and place to start, and if you already know what Bikram is about then you have just found a beautiful, real, intentional studio to continue your healing practice. The owners and most teachers are so thoughtful and truly look at Bikram as a practice where everyone gets to heal what they need at the pace that is best for them and they remind you to check in with your body and do what is best for your own healing and growth. I have been at this studio for over a year doing work trade, but had to find another studio that works for me because my schedule no longer fits with the class times they offer. I will forever be thankful to Bikram SE and all the teachers that helped me there. I am so grateful for this Bikram Yoga Studio! Let me start by saying the place is absolutely beautiful! I've been practicing Bikram for a few years now and have never walked into a more lovely studio. There's plenty of natural light while still keeping the hot room private and the back wall is all cedar wood. The room looks and smells similar to a sauna, which I love. It's a small but helpful reminder that time in the hot room is a treat/gift to yourself -- similar to a spa experience. The teachers are kind, friendly and welcoming. My class was a mixture of experience levels and I like to think every one was coached and assisted without being made to feel embarrassed. After all, it's super intimidating coming into a hot room with a bunch of bendy, half-naked people -- but after a few minutes I'm sure no one felt that way. As I was leaving, I overheard a few people talking about how often they deep clean the studio. GET THIS! 6 nights a week! Amazing. I've had two opposite experiences there. In the first I got no direction or adjustment and just kind of made it through the class. In the second i got so much attention I honestly felt bothered and picked on. The second was such a turn off I haven't been back. I submitted a comment to the studio with my name and contact and issues with the instructor but never heard anything. It was a real bummer to not hear from them. Flash forward to march and the owners wrote a personal note back to me thanking me for doing so and inviting me back. I thought that was a nice move on their part so I'll give it another try! This lovely studio is a reincarnation of the dirty smelly studio that was closed without warning by the previous db of an owner, leaving everyone high and dry. Leah and Julia have not only created a beautiful and calming (clean) environment, they have brought in such a positive energy that the old studio was missing for years. Instructors are outstanding and very engaged and the time and money the Ladies have spent is very evident. Great cedar smells, not hot air blowing on the yogis, and an antimicrobial "carpet" that will supposedly not retain odors (we'll see about that :-)) I've been practicing in this location for over 3 years and while the physical location is very convenient for me, the positive energy and great space makes it even better. I am an active male whom had contracted Lyme disease in 2013 during a lengthy hiking trip in the Grand Canyon. Consequently, my flexibility was severely affected. I joined Bikram Yoga SE Portland in 2015 and by doing so, my life has wonderfully changed. The postures are basic, although challenging. The teachers whom I consider family are loving, caring individuals - to name a few Isabel, Leah, Julie, Roxanne, Will and Megan have helped me integrate yoga practice into my busy professional life. By lengthening the exhalation of breath, I am able to get my often draining fight-or flight instincts in a mode of peace, rest and recovery - increasing my overall health, awareness and flexibility. I am better prepared for daily challenging conditions by learning each posture message - whether it be discomfort or a door that has opened to new beginnings. My yoga practice has allowed me to be an active person, playing tennis, biking, hiking and anything else that I wish to do - freedom now to live my life with confidence. CW read more

I've just finished my 30 day intro period at Bikram Yoga SE Portland. The studio is under new ownership and it really shows. I'd visited the old studio several years ago when I moved to Portland and was turned off for many reasons. I was so excited to see that the studio was newly remodeled with new owners. The difference really shows! My experience so far has been wonderful. Leah and Julie have created a really beautiful, modern, and clean space for yoga. They are really great teachers and provide helpful instruction and correction during class. They've made an effort to be sure to know my name and that is so appreciated. I was looking for good energy and a sense of community when trying this studio again, and I've definitely found that in the last month. I'm looking forward to continuing my practice at BIkram Yoga SE Portland and encourage everyone to try it! I've been practicing at SE for over 4 years now! Wow, time flies. I came to this studio very new to hot yoga and new to Portland. I immediately felt welcomed and included. Over the years, I've made friends and a beautiful community with people of diverse ages, shapes, races, genders, abilities, goals and life phases. The studio is clean and pretty and the teachers are kind and thoughtful. The general teaching culture of the studio is very compassionate while encouraging you to grow and think about your perceived limits differently. One of the reasons I love the 26 + 2 series is the discipline within the class and how everyone moves together. Teachers will encourage you to stay with the group by moderating postures (but not changing them). They also always say to take a break when you need to... and many people do. Hot yoga can be very intimidating to try for the first time but Bikram Yoga SE Portland is an amazing place to try it with a fun, supportive community. read more

Decided to give Bikram a try based on a friend's advice. Bikram SE is in a convenient location so I signed up for the month trial package. I didn't expect to like it as much as I do, but I'm hooked and have just signed up for a full membership! I've had several classes with Leah, Julie, and Isabel, who have all been very encouraging and supportive, and really made me feel welcome. I can't compare to other Bikram studios, but compared to other fitness classes I have taken I think the teachers here do a good job giving students individual corrections and encouragement while also maintaining good momentum throughout the class. (Especially appreciated how much attention I got during my first class when I had no clue what I was doing). I definitely recommend this studio to anyone who is interested in trying Bikram. read more

WOW! What an experience this was. I am a first time Bikram attendee (long time flow yoga lover) and holy cow! I was well hydrated and skimpily clothed as instructed. As you enter the room it's warm but not unbearable. That quickly changes as soon as you start moving!!! There were a few times I had to come to a seated position on my mat because I was feeling exerted but it was not weird at all. As a matter of fact there were people doing that through out the class. So DON'T try to be a hero. Take the break if you need it just DON'T leave the room if you can tolerate just sitting. Keep your head above your heart and you'll be just fine. The changing room is open and the ladies are not shy!! The bathrooms are clean and bright. My instructor was very helpful and gave gentle corrections that were perfect for a first time Bikram experience. I just might go again... read more

Great remodel! The studio room is pristine. One of the nicest I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot of them. The cedar wall is a nice touch. Julie and Leah have worked hard to create a sense of community in the studio. They always have cool classes and events taking place throughout the month, my favorite being Isabel's gong meditation- which is AMAZING! I started practicing here last Sept. when I got their $39 unlimited month special as I was curious about hot yoga. After the month ended I fell in love with the practice and have been a regular ever since. The studio is not only aesthetically welcoming (so much natural light!), but Leah and Julie are truly some of the kindest people I've met. All of the teachers truly care about making sure that you are aligned correctly, which is something I haven't seen in other hot yoga studios when I've practiced.
