Our family stopped into Agua 301 on Sunday afternoon around 2:00pm. Yes It was brunch and there were lots of full tables. Our party of 6 was seated in the back of the restaurant and another young family came in after us and were seated nearby. At 2:25 when they were getting their food, we still hadn't received water, or even had an encounter with our server. We got a scramble with another server bringing us 1 basket of chips and 5 containers of salsa. Service was terribly slow and erratic, one order was completely wrong (shrimp tacos instead of salmon). The manager did come over and apologize saying a server quit right before we were sat. However, we also noted that said manager was sitting and visiting with a lady at a back table. If he was concerned about losing a server and knew the other servers were slammed, perhaps he should have stepped up and helped his team. Another restaurant resting on its laurels because it's in a prime location and no matter how bad the service and food are, it can still rely on a stream of hungry people wandering by. Was first dismayed because man at the host stand didn't bother to make eye contact, but said "Huh, who?" when I gave him the name of the reservation. I didn't need to bother repeating myself because he found the name and managed to pass menus off to a coworker, still while making no eye contact. Must be nice to work somewhere where the customers are so privileged that this amazing restaurant decided to establish itself in this location - that's the attitude that came across. The guy that seated me was the nicest person I dealt with all evening. The waiter mumbled and was hard to understand. Felt rushed to put in a drink order but then the waiter was hard to track down the rest of the evening. The drinks that were so important for us to order arrived after the first dish (I had to wave the waiter down - pretty sure he forgot the drinks at the bar). I was never asked if I wanted salt on my margarita. Our appetizer order was entered incorrectly and came out wrong. Empanadas were over cooked and are floating on top of what appears to be congealed Cheez Wiz. Shrimp tacos were ok - flavorful but nothing to write home about. Waiter never came back to check on us and it took us about 20 minutes to catch his eye to get the check. No offer for refills on drinks or did we want dessert?...nothing. Maybe he was happy to see us go so he could be one step closer to getting out of there. That was our exact sentiment, as well. Save yourself the time, money and calories. Be careful if you make a reservation through Yelp. They hadn't checked the Yelp reservations on a busy Saturday evening. As a result, we had to wait 20+ minutes for a table. Once seated, service and food were all good. For vegetarian options, the mushroom flatbread is better than the bland veggie enchiladas. Margaritas were a bit bitter. I hate to give this place only 3 stars because I really did enjoy my experience and meal but nothing stood out that would make me want to come [out of my way] back. However, if I was in the area Agua 301 would definitely be a solid option. It was a nice space and the service was good. I had the Blackberry Caipirinha which I liked and would order again. But I did want to try something different and the server recommended their special pomegranate margarita (he said it was served with jalapeno that I could opt out which I did). It was good, but not as good as the Blackberry Caipirinha. The salsa was very good with a nice consistency. I hate salsa that is too watery or not blended. The chips were standard, thicker cut, probably ordered in bulk from the supplier. I do enjoy very thin chips that are made in house but it was fine. We also ordered two guacamoles for the table. The Guacamole Traditional (avocado, lime, jalapeño, tomato, cilantro, onion) and Guacamole de Jaiba (jumbo lump crab and sweet corn medley). Both were good and standard but I do wish the Guacamole de Jaiba stood out more. Basically it was regular guac with crab meat sprinkled on top. I do wish that maybe they would add more spices to make it stand out a little. Nonetheless can't go wrong with guac. There were several entrees on the menu I wanted which says a lot. I decided on the Chipotle Shrimp. The shrimp were standard sized and the white wine chipotle cream was very good. It complimented the shrimp and rice very well and I enjoyed my meal. I also shared a side of the yucca fritas which were very salty but I like salt so I enjoyed them. Overall good experience and for a solid meal it's worth checking out. read more

Went to dinner with the boyfriend and his parents Friday night and they lost us at tilapia. Made reservations for 8:00 pm and they sat us right away. The menu is extensive and they have small creative Mexican dishes, tacos, latin inspired entrees and other plates such as ceviche and empanadas. We started with cocktails: regular margarita, blood orange margaritas and sangria. All the cocktails were great. I love ceviche and was excited to try their "white fish of the day" ceviche, until they said the fish was Tilapia... No thanks. After that I saw that some of their fish dishes were with Tilapia so I bet the ceviche is always with Tilapia! Then I saw the grilled oysters, "yeah oysters it is", but they were out of oysters!!! At that point I wanted to give up so we all went with the basics: "tacos". I ordered the carne asada and kimchi tacos, and the other people at the table ordered tuna tacos. My bf went with the Bistec montado dish. My tacos were great! Tasty, hot and all you want in a kimchi taco. My boyfriends dish was okay. The Bistec comes with yuca fries and a fried egg. The Bistec meat was okay, the egg overcooked and the yuca fries were very very dry. The aioli sauce was standard aioli. They did not provide him with a steak knife so it was a hard meat to cut. We finished the meal with piscos and they were mediocre, at best. Is this a fine dining place? No. Is it worth ordering entrees at their sort of steep prices? Definitely not. This place is just a nice taco and drinks joint. The quality of the food was not great and many of the things we wanted were not available. In my opinion I have no idea how or why they're in business. Our waitress, lord help us. She was a complete ditz. We had to reemphasize everything to her bc she couldn't get it right. Our food was nasty. I ordered the chipotle shrimp and my husband got their tacos, we also had their guacamole. All bland and tasted off. Honestly, how do you ruin tacos?! My plate, the food was slopped on & the sauce looked like someone just splattered it on top of the rice with a tostado on top. I got about 2 bites in and couldn't go any further. Did I mention I'm 37 weeks pregnant and hadn't eaten all day so I was famished and would've eaten dog food at this point?! It's now been a few hours since we've been home and we can't get off the couch bc our bellies are in shambles & we keep taking turns torturing our toilets. It has killer outdoor seating but for a restaurant that claims to be Mexican, the good is incredibly bland. I have a pretty low tolerance for spice and even I wanted more heat out of the chorizo. Just returned from a terrific dinner here. It has terrific views of the waterfront park and the dining room was attractive + comfortable -- not always possible in DC restaurants. The chips were warm, crisp and homemade with a tangy salsa for dipping. I started with the seared ahi tostada appetizer (wonderful!) then had an order (2) of fish tacos (best I've ever had). My partner had the pork carnitas tacos which he said were tender and tasty. At $7, the tacos are a bargain! We will definitely return. read more

They are chatting with each other and this happened the entire time. Unclear if we had a waiter and then no chips or any attention. Though I had made reservations for 6:30 tonight, I was called at 6:10 to confirm. I did and said I was already in the bar. At 6:30, I tried to check in and was told rudely by the hostess that I had no reservation. I told her about the phone call and she sneered and responded curtly that I had NO reservation. After I retrieved my reservation from my phone and showed it to her, there was no apology or any admission that a mistake had been made. What a miserable experience. On a hot summer Sunday afternoon, restaurant wasn't full, but nonetheless we waited to be served for 15 minutes and still no one stopped by our table. Not even for a glass of water. We called the host who took our drinks order, which never arrived. I had to wait in line to wash my hands since the restaurant only has two bathrooms. First time here today for brunch with family and friends. What an amazing place! The warm February weather allowed us to enjoy the beautiful outside patio, too. Our meal started out with crab guacamole for the table... Even my husband who normally doesn't like guac really enjoyed it. From there, our entree choices ranged from pumpkin pancakes to salad with grilled shrimp, or taco platters. All was fantastic, and the bar service was excellent. So, I've been to Agua several times now - once for happy hour, twice for dinner and once for brunch. For the most part, it's a five star experience - excellent food, great service. However, brunch was different. It was more a three-star experience. Drinks, food & service amazing for the few times I went before (happy hour and dinners). All of those times, it was just a party of two. Our brunch experience was not nearly as good; this was a party of 11. The mimosas are WEAK and they take a very long time to refill any bottomless drink. (I'd TOTALLY recommend you do NOT get the bottomless Bloody Marys no matter what. My fiance only got three in a time frame when the rest of us who got sangrias and margaritas had at least six each. He said they were delicious, but 20 minutes waiting for a refill is not ok when it happens three times.) My fiance also got the brunt of the bad food. My food was great. I got the grilled shrimp sandwich with fried yucca. They took away my plate when I was still working on the yucca, but ok, fine. My fiance got a sandwich of some kind and the bottom was COMPLETELY black. I'm not sure why they allowed it out of the kitchen. However, he didn't complain b/c it took a long while after we'd ordered to get our food. I'll almost certainly be back. I just can't guarantee I'll be hitting up this place again for brunch and I'd not recommend for a large party. Still, the food and service (and reasonable prices) mean that I do recommend still for dinner or happy hour with a small party. read more

Let's just say, it was Cinco de Mayo so I tried really hard to give this place the benefit of the doubt but the service and food overall just wasn't good. So, my boyfriend and I were heading to a Nats game that evening so we figured it would be a perfect time to try this place out especially since it was "National Tequila Day". The place was definitely packed but we did have a reservation that we had actually missed but the manager was very accommodating and seated us pretty quickly. That was pretty much the only good thing of the evening besides the okay $6 margaritas. When we got seated we waited for at least 20min before someone even came to greet us! Nonetheless we had our order ready when they came. We shared the chicken, steak and fish tacos. My boyfriend ate one chicken taco and immediately said this place sucked. I knew it had to be bad because he practically never complains about his food! The steak and fish tacos were just alright, nothing to brag about at all. After we realized that this wasn't what we expected at all, we asked the waiter to remove the horrible chicken tacos from the bill and paid and left. Good day all!!! I MUST SAY...I was highly impressed with the food, drinks and service I received on yesterday's Cinco de Mayo!!! My boyfriend and I are complete foodies and customer service is continuously my way of life. We decided to go to Agua 301 at the last minute to celebrate the holiday. The atmosphere was wonderful and the restaurant was packed, but I must say that their skilled staff did a fantastic job making sure everyone was comfortable, well informed and felt amazingly special!! I must definitely give my absolute thanks and favoritism to my waiter, Charles!! His energy, expertise and attentiveness was indeed unmatched! He made it as though it was our on special party/celebration! The drinks, their signature Agua Margarita, were phenomenal and the Salmon crusted dish was superbly delicious and they were both his recommendations!!! I woke the next morning (today, lol) completely convinced that a review was needed, as the service, food and atmosphere were PERFECTION!!!!! I can't wait to go back and take my entire crew of friends...and honestly, probably TODAY!!!!! It is hard review to give because the food is very good, but the service is extremely lacking. I have been here 3 times in the last couple of months and it is always the same. The hostess is never much of a hostess. They look at you like you are disturbing them. It always takes forever to get water and chips. They almost never check on to see if everything is fine or if you need water refills or another drink. I'm not sure if the management and staff just don't care because it seems like they have enough staff, but maybe they don't. We have always sat outside and maybe that is the problem. Like I said the food is good, but I us ally have indigestion because anything that can go wrong seems to and you are more annoyed after waiting and not feeling like they want you there. I'm glad the navy yard has many other restaurants to choose from because I don't believe I will be going back for a 4th time. Maybe in the winter when I'll check out the service inside. read more
