I ended up going two days in a row and was able to try a number of different plates while comfortably sat inside safe from the blistering cold. Service was good even though it was busy and the food was lovely, with the chicken and waffles being a standout. I was disappointed with my breakfast experience at Surveyor, located inside the Thompson Washington DC hotel. The breakfast service was extremely slow, and for much of the meal, we felt largely ignored. While our server appeared overwhelmed, there didn't seem to be any sense of urgency in addressing tables or following up on guest needs. My order arrived incomplete, and I had to send my meal back because my over-hard eggs were still runny. After waiting approximately 20 minutes for the correction, the rest of the food on my plate had become cold. By that point, the meal was no longer enjoyable. When the bill arrived, it became clear why service may not have been a priority, as gratuity was already included. While I understand busy mornings happen, the overall experience fell well below expectations for a restaurant associated with an upscale hotel. On a quick weekend trip to DC, my fiance and I stayed at the Thompson Hotel in Navy Yard. With our hotel we were given a breakfast credit of one breakfast dish each and a coffee or juice. This mid century modern restaurant is super cute and trendy. I love the vibes. Our server on both days was a bit awkward, which made the experience weird at times. It was still a positive experience overall. On my first day, I decided to order the cookies and cream coffee, warning this drink is for folks who like super sweet things. I also ordered the mushroom toast. I wish the toast had a bit more flavor, maybe some sumac or paprika would've elevated it. My fiance had the waffles that morning and they were pretty good, especially with the mascarpone. The next morning I went for the standard coffee and was happy to see that I could get a side of oat milk. I ordered the steak and eggs and loved the flavor of the steak so much! For a hotel, this place serves good breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, I got the steak and eggs which unfortunately, it was cooked medium and can't be changed (i would have preferred medium rare). What I liked it was the fries and the steak came with sauce (au juice I think). Pretty satisfying. For lunch, the spicy bird is a must. Big portion with 2 crispy chicken, accompanied with cole slaw and hot sauce. So nice that we ordered again to go. Their fries are also addictive. Highly recommended. I was very excited to try the crab benedict and the the "shrooms" (aka avocado toast with charred mushroom on top). The crab benedict I had on our first day was decent and not too heavy, which I appreciated. However, I think what really impressed us was my "shrooms" toast and the chicken and waffles that my partner had. The charred mushroom on top of avocado toast was filled with varied yet complementary flavors. The chicken and waffles had excellent texture and was a good balance between savory and sweet. The restaurant's aesthetic was also noteworthy. The design has a lot of wood, which gives the restaurant a classic and elevated feel. Other reviews commented on lackluster service, but we didn't have that problem. We noticed our food did take a little longer than expected, but we didn't mind. I just wanted to extended a special shoutout and appreciation for Andrew! During my weekend stay at the Thompson, I witnessed this guy work his butt off, handling many roles at once. He was the host, handled seating people, cleaned and set tables, answered phone calls, I mean literally everything. Surveyor definitely needs additional hands to decrease the workload amongst staff. Pretty solid hotel breakfast spot! We had complementary breakfast through our AMEX card and they had a good variety of breakfast and brunch options. The halloumi avocado sandwich was my favorite mostly because I love halloumi, but definitely add some salt and pepper. The omelette wasn't too wet and over stuffed, there was plenty of egg to go around and hold it together which I enjoyed. The short rib hash was good, the beef was really nice, but the fried egg was a little underdone for my taste. The chicken and waffles was a fun twist on a trash though I'm not sure if I loved the chicken wing topping because it made it kind of difficult to eat, but it had fantastic flavor and the red chili maple syrup was delicious. Service was a little slow since it was crowded on a weekend and they don't have a ton of staff to serve the space. Stayed at the Thompson for a staycation weekend and included was free breakfast at Surveyor. I can only speak for myself to say that breakfast was awful even though it was free. The water brought to your table in a bottle is room temperature to start. The $5 orange juice was just very clearly pulpy Tropicana and the grapefruit juice had no flavor. I got the crab Benedict which was simply awful. It did not taste fresh, the English muffin was barely toasted, and with no sides or anything isn't worth the $25 price tag. Now why wouldn't I complain about this dish? Service was non-existent. After receiving our food the only time we saw our server was when she dropped the check off with the included service charge. If you're staying at the hotel and you have to pay, go literally anywhere else for breakfast. For free, I mean, up to you. read more

The last few restaurants I've been to tend to have watered down drinks, but thankfully that's not the case here. The restaurant week menu offered a starter, salad, entree and dessert. We got the calamari and crab dip to start, which we all enjoyed. The wedge salad was DELIGHTFUL . I would seriously come back just to eat that. My New York strip was very well cooked and flavorful. I'm not a big fan of chocolate, but the chocolate cake for dessert was also fine. My daughter made a brunch reservation at this lovely restaurant inside the Thompson Hotel on Mother's day. We were quickly seated upon arrival. They also had a dj playing music. The space is very bright due to the high ceilings and tons of big windows. The menu has several popular brunch options and a few unique ones. We opted for the chicken and waffles, steak and eggs, and the shrooms dish. It was like avocado toast but with portobello mushrooms rather than avocados. Everyone enjoyed their food. Nationals fans looking for American inspired cuisine before a game- look no more. The Surveyor aims to please. We walked in and were welcomed by an incredibly friendly staff. The service was great. However, we kept hearing the menu changed a few times while being served our food. The low down: The cornbread appetizer was baked fresh and served hot hot hot. The wildflower honey butter melted into the bread and it tasted almost (emphasis on almost) like a dessert. The roasted half chicken main dish was cooked perfectly. It was tender and had the easy pull with the fork. It wasn't dry and it kept you going back for more. It reminded me of a Russian chicken marinade minus the onion flavor. The apricot glaze wasn't overpowering -- it comlimeted the heirloom carrots. The carrots were my favorite part of the meal. They were cooked delicately and held onto a nice flavor. The pumpkin seeds added an additional texture and flavor to the dish. They weren't necessarily needed. The dish would have been flavorful enough without them. The cheeseburger was where the meal took a turn. The patty was cooked fine. However, for the price they charged, the dish looked like the fries were thrown on to it and the bun was just blah. Perhaps a toasted brioche bun and shoe string sweet potato fries would take this from a 3 to a 5 out of 5 main dish. We were excited to see such a generous restaurant week offer--you pick from the normal menu! An appetizer, salad, entree and the dessert. We had an earlier reservation (530pm). Got to the restaurant on time and was immediately seated. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. Our server, Brandi, was great. She took our order, made suggestions and checked in on us regularly. Several other servers and managers walked by to ask how our meal was, fill our water, clear our dishes etc. The restaurant was not packed at the time we were seated and started dining. It was nice to be able to converse at a normal volume. The restaurant is clean and I really like the high ceilings. The theme is nautical--you'll see it in some of the pictures/decor and the names of the drinks, but it's subtle. Food was good. Crab dip was fun and different for us. Definitely one to share. The meatballs came with 3 hearty sized meatballs and a good amount of sauce to enjoy with each. The wedge salad was a little on the heavier side, since it was loaded with egg, blue cheese, and ranch dressing. The iceberg lettuce used was probably the right salad green to use, to lighten it. The house salads champagne vinaigrette was delicious! It doesn't have the bite that most vinaigrettes do, it was smoother and mild. Pork chop was good and our favorite pick. It came with yams with candied pecans and toasted meringue. The ny steak was cooked to my requested medium rare and was ok. I enjoyed the cream spinach it was served with--I would eat it as an app with crackers or chips! Dessert, we had choice of ice cream. I got pistachio and my partner got cherry and chocolate. They were generous sized scoops. I had pieces of pistachios in mine and the other flavor was cherry ice cream with cherries and chocolate chips. The restaurant week offer was well worth the visit. So I came here for restaurant week so it's always hard to judge the average day but it's lit in here! I made a reservation and still waited about twenty minutes before we were seated. Picked this restaurant because the restaurant week menu is undeniable. I don't know if the service is slower because it's restaurant week or what but it took like twenty minutes to get our ginger ales and they forgot my friends cranberry juice. The salads took easily 35-40 minutes. The server didn't like come check on us in the in between time so only saw her in the passings which I guess is fine if there's no update...but still with these longs gaps in between, one could still stop in. Right now I'm writing this as I'm sitting here. It's we got seated around 905, ordered shortly after- and to this point I got my ginger ale and my friends drink was forgotten and he doesn't want to call it out so water for him :) and so far we got our salads. Salads at 945p. Apps at 1008p. Dinner food at 1027. So when the food came it was wrong. I ordered the steak with mashed potatoes and tomatoes . It came with French fries. When I pointed it out the server said they are out of mashed potatoes- HUH?! I literally have been sitting here for over an hour. So I asked did she mention that to me when I placed the order she said they ran out after my order was placed. Did our server Come to the table and let me know they were out :) NOPE! OUR SERVER WAS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY ATROCIOUS. She had no patience, no courtesy- no apologies for the continuous gaps in service, the wait. I even had to send my salad back with another server because she just was terrible. Even the table next to us sensed her unpleasant demeanor- I couldn't believe she was acting like this in the midst of the already existing delays. I end up changing my order and just asking for it to go because at this point it's clear the kitchen is backed up and I didn't want my friend to have to wait for me even longer. Again no apology for the inconvenience, or apology for not updating me on kitchen changes, and no apology for not asking me before making substitutions to my entree without my permission. Just not adding any positives to the experience AT ALLLL. At least If the server was pleasant, accommodating, or apologetic I could say that. NO! It's dessert time and the menu clearly says ice cream. We were brought cookies and the check. No we are out of ice cream no nothing! Like what's going on. We didn't even want them! And just walked away. Of course after she walks away I find a problem with the check. The cranberry juice my friend never received was on the bill and the spinach that came WITH my entree was charged as a side. After waiting for her to return I point out the inconsistencies in the check in which she stated the charge for my spinach was correct. To fact check myself and her yet again I pull up the menu and told her this was a part of the entree so why is it being rung up separately. Again, disgruntled, she just reached down and picks the bill up. She was just so wrong and rude the entire night. I pointed out the drink mistake as well. In the midst of all this I had flagged down another server to ask for the manager because we were waiting forever for the server to come back to the table. Mind you at this point it's like 1045- so we are one of the last ones Even here (place closes at 10) No manager ever comes. We walked out at 11pm and I literally had ginger ale, a roll and salad after being there since 845- not being able to enjoy neither my main course or dessert. Yes I do have my food to go, but the entire experience beginning to end was so not what I was expecting, looking forward to etc. i plan to follow up with the restaurant tomorrow and see if anything can come from this experience. Came for brunch during the weekend and it was fairly empty - this place is hit or miss with traffic. We ordered the chicken sandwich and chicken and waffles. My friend loved the chicken sandwich and loved their taste of my chicken and waffles. I thought the chicken waffles were just okay - nothing to run home about. The mimosas were fine - they do have a bottomless option that i did not take advantage but I think would be worthwhile. Where do I start with Surveyor?! Wow. Customer service and flexibility are so important and Surveyor perfected both! I called for reservations for two a week in advanced and then the day of my reservations my friends surprised me with a party and wanted to join me for dinner. We had to change the reservations to 7 and for an earlier time. Surveyor didn't even fret. I thought for sure on a Saturday night that would be impossible. The host was so sweet and accommodating; true rock star. Our server was very personable and was able to ask the chef to alter my meal due to dietary restrictions. I was slightly nervous how the meal would turn out with no dairy, oil, marinade or butter. I have no clue what the chef did to my NY strip but when I tell you I could've cried happy tears from how scrumptious it was, I'm not even exaggerating. The steak was cooked a little more than I'd like but it was still beyond delicious and so flavorful. I was nervous they may have accidentally added oil or butter to it based on how delicious it was but the plate was not greasy at all. My friends ordered several appetizers and they loved all of them! Due to my dietary restrictions I could not have any of them but they all looked and smelled great! The bar and dining area are cute, intimate, and soothing. Overview: Me and three of my friends had dinner here at 7:30PM on a Saturday night in mid-March. It was not crowded and we were seated for our reservation right away. The calamari were very flavorful and the rolls were warm and nicely buttered. Alcoholic Beverage - 5/5 I enjoy fruity and sweet cocktails. I asked the waiter for his recommendation and he suggested the Clover Hitch. The description doesn't make it sound fruity, but it is. They use egg whites for the foam at the top of the drink. Entrée - 2.5/5 I ordered Pan-Seared Salmon for my entrée and this was served over vegetables. It was so good I will remember it for a long time. My husband had the green eggs and ham which was a salad with soft boiled egg and crispy ham. He really liked it. Not as a method of cooking or some kind of sear, I'm talking Cher in clueless when she burns the cookies levels of burnt. Cornbread was hard and dry and burnt on the sides. Breakfast was just as bad. I ordered a basic latte and I'm telling you it was vile. 2 sips and I was done. How do you mess up a latte??? tasted like they just dumped some dirt, and maybe a dash of vinegar in there. Didn't even get a spoon or stirrer so I could add sugar, had to use my knife. The scrambled eggs with cheese had what looked to be a KRAFT SINGLE half melted on top, the bacon was greasy and fatty in the worst way possible and no one even bothered to bring my brûléed grapefruit. 2 stars ONLY because the server was very nice and the inside is cute. read more
