Long story semi-short, my AC of 26 years had been on its last legs since about 2017... I'd been postponing the inevitable with R-22 recharge + leak sealant, with service from a older fellow whom I'd had a great relationship with, for almost a decade. Between 2020 and 2025, all seemed "tolerable" with my old Payne/Carrier AC + furnace. But last fall, it was clear my system had given up the ghost... and unbeknownst to me, the fabulous older gentleman who'd been coming here off and on for years, retired and moved out of state. I needed some new AC geniuses! Let the research and bidding/quoting madness begin! * FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES ARE BEST! I know everyone says "go local," and avoid things (giant franchises, etc.) that rhyme with "Bosco," for such an install (as well as gear sharing the first name of a famous 1990s-era heavyweight boxer w/the last name of Lewis). I'll let you imagine how that "almost" experience went... The FAMILY-OWNED business that is GREEN PLANET not only saved me heaps, but educated me about what would truly be needed, to go the "heat pump" route (my initial intention). Given that I have ancient, single-pane windows, and am in a tricky financial spot (I can't really upgrade my insulation to seal up the home to make a heat pump be 100% effective, let alone, replace windows), I ended up going with a rock solid, super efficient, side discharge AC condenser (due to vertical clearance limitations) and a new furnace (more details below). Nice! * "OFFICE" ETTIQUETTE Anyone curious about GREEN PLANET's "office" coordination... I wrote to Jay through their website... he phoned within an hour... I explained as best I could (background / issues / wants), he made an appointment to come out on Tuesday... He was on time, inspected the premises and advised... and his entire crew was out here THE NEXT DAY, taking care of business. I've had no AC since last September. (Though I've survived in here for 4 years without it, ages ago.) And now I'm CHILLIN'!!!!! (For PARENTS: I also appreciate the fact that the crew were extra aware of their environment, given that my son was home from school, sick; they were always mindful of him, in their midst.) * SOME INSTALLATION SPECIFICS A 2-ton unit was installed, replacing/upgrading from basically what I had... and my existing ducting is still rock solid, which also saved me some cash (by not needing new ducting). They helped me understand options and worked with me on what I wanted. They did what they said they would do. They were flexible and took the time to finesse the work where it was needed. Good quality work. Permits went fine, and everything passed the first time. My 1930 property has a 2-story duplex and a house. I live in one unit and have renters in the other units. I talked to several companies about the work. So Cal Air was more responsive than other companies. Menooa was very knowledgeable and helpful during the first meeting, offering me options. Their proposal was competitive with other proposals. They helped me understand options and were flexible, and worked with me through the installation of what I wanted. They installed 3 separate systems for me, one system for each unit. Each system had 3 zones. I've had many repairs to my property over the years, and the details matter to me. I wanted to hide the lines as much as practical, preserve the architectural look. My contractor handled the electrical installation and opened and repaired the drywall after the lines were installed. SoCal Air worked well with my contractor. Renovation of older construction is often complicated and takes extra effort. We had to come up with some creative solutions, and SoCal Air did a great job! My units were installed above doors and windows. My contractor modified the living room cove ceilings so the indoor units would fit close to the ceiling. So Cal Air did everything else. Everything fits great and looks great! I appreciated that Manooa gave good recommendations to steer me away from difficulties, but he also listened to me and headed my wishes when it mattered to me. So Cal Air handled the permits for the heat pumps. The installation passed the LA Building and Safety inspections with no issues. The work was finished late summer, early fall of 2025, after the heat, but in time for winter. Heating worked great in winter. We had a chance to use the cooling during a recent heat wave, and it worked great! I bought the heat pumps primarily for cooling, since the apartments had only heating and had never had cooling before. The units work great! The temperature stays very comfortable. Everything is very quiet. I barely know they are on, except when I open the door and am shocked by how hot it is outside. My tenants gave me positive feedback and have been very happy with the heat pumps. My property still looks like 1930, but it doesn't feel like 1930 anymore! I am very happy with their work and the results. I've recommended So Cal Air to several friends.

Another company had quoted me $3200 for a new freezer compressor. Art said that wasn't necessary. He performed a cleaning of the coiling springs and took the bottom vent cover off to let the refrigerator breathe in the future. Instead of spending $3200 I spent $185. He also serviced my older HVAC unit, a more obscure water source heat pump model that not alot of people service. Two other companies told me the unit needed to be replaced at a cost of anywhere from $5000 to 12,000. I told Art a third company had already done a very expensive deep clean. He said it was good that I did the cleaning but that it only needed to be done every five years. He replaced some of the freon for $130 and colder air was blowing thru my vents in no time.
