I love me some sushi! The issue I have though is that my stomach is bigger than my wallet. As a result, I have to go to all-you-can-eat sushi establishments to compensate for the bottomless gullet that is my tummy. Kyoto is the place to be! The staff is friendly and attentive, the food is fresh and reasonably priced. In going to an all-you-can-eat sushi establishment, the quality of the food will not necessarily be on par with a per roll charged joint, and that is my only reason for rescinding the one star. When we lived in St. Paul, we were frequent visitors at the Kyoto in the HarMar Mall in Roseville, but I had no idea it was a chain. I have to say, I like this location better. It's a little more classy and hey, it's not in a run-down weird mall, so that's a plus. For all-you-can-eat sushi, it's pretty decent. The rolls are generally pretty well made. I do feel like these places always start serving you less fish and more rice as you order more and more sushi, but if you go hungry and not expecting it to be super fancy sushi, you will definitely be able to find stuff you like and will walk out feeling super full. There's a nice selection of non-sushi items too, like dumplings and little appetizers from the kitchen. Every time I go there and order the chicken wings, you can taste the overdue of it (you know when they defrost the meant and it stay out too long so it smells already but they still deep fried it and serve it to people). You may be thinking did I overeat during the all you can eat period. No, I did not. If you are consuming more than one roll or more than one item, the all-you-can-eat is a better value. This is our favorite sushi place in the north metro area and have never had a bad experience there. The sushi has always been fresh and consistently tasty. We went for the $26 all you can eat sushi dinner (lunch is $15). We always get the chicken wings and seafood fried rice as starter. Love both, the wings are crispy and flavorful, while the fried rice has kind of smokey favor and is so good. We had the Sakura Roll, the Snow Mountain Roll, and the Dynamite Roll. The Snow Mountain Roll is my favorite, I love tempura shrimp. The Dynamite roll is excellent too and I highly recommend. If you go for the all-you-can-eat come hungry, so many great options on the menu. Service is good and the atmosphere is nice, kind of laid back and quiet. For $25 pretty awesome. This was our first experience. It was busy when we came for 8pm Friday. But receptionist said 20 min wait and indeed it was. Our waiter was nice and friendly. There's no "limit" as what you can order even though it says "one piece per order". This was a great way to get a sushi fix in the burbs. FOOD- Faves: ika sansai, hamachi kama, sashimi (salmon), unagi sushi. The specialty rolls were okay. Teriyaki beef not impressive. Veggie udon ok. The hubs LOVED the red bean and green tea ice cream. He's had many and was quite impressed. ATMOSPHERE: I liked it. High ceiling. Good music. Comfy booths. The only annoying thing was an obnoxious laughing girl behind us-- not Kyoto's fault. PEEVES: our waiter disappeared for a good 15-20 mins between our meal and again at the end. We had some food to occupy us for awhile but were staring at each other, sipping our drinks, and nibbling on ginger to kill time and stomach. I think he may have been ringing up another party during those waits. Speaking of ringing up, as we drew near to end of meal, we couldn't really wait for our itemized receipt so just gave our credit card and our $6 off coupon. I want to start this off by saying I HATE writing negative reviews, but this one needs to be made because it involves the food quality. I ate here for the all-you-can-eat lunch on 8/25 and the whole experience was really nice except for one of the sushi rolls I ordered. I went with a coworker and they had the same reaction, we shared the rainbow roll which on top they had white tuna. That was the only piece of the roll out of everything we ordered, that we both didn't eat/ finish. I have 2 pieces of the roll with white tuna on them and noticed both times that the fish smelt and tasted super fishy. Usually that brings up a red flag for me so thats why we both stopped eating it. Hours after lunch I ended up throwing up twice from that meal (and no I don't over eat at these places). I am very confident that the cause was the white tuna as fish, if fresh and sushi grade, should NOT taste or smell super fishy unless it has gone bad. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes eating raw fish. The menu and cooked food is fantastic on the other hand, but if you are a fan of the raw side of sushi, I suggest you pass on this place and go somewhere else. For 2 hot green tea and 2 hot black tea ordered brought up only 2 green tea barely warm. Then refilled 2 green tea upon request to give them hot instead of room temperature but the tea was no better. Charged for 10 people instead of 9 and for 8 tea pots (we never had more than 4 total including replacement). On the top of this wanted additional service fees (20%) and tips. The very mixed reviews for this location (and the other two locations as well) had me concerned. Would the sushi be bad? Would the service suck? Will we find the all-you-can-eat deal a waste of money? Thankfully, the answers to all of the above questions were NO. While certainly not of premium quality, my party all found the sushi quality to be pretty good. We had at least half a dozen types of sushi and sashimi, and none of the fish tasted off. I also enjoyed the non-sushi menu items, such as the pork cutlet. Even the bizarre "sushi pizza" was amusing and fun to eat. Service was sometimes a bit sporadic, and a couple of times the help got our order wrong. That's hardly a big sin with all-you-can-eat though. The green tea was a bit watery (and not included). If you eat here, try not to expect too much. It's not a premium experience, but it's still pretty good. Do bring your appetite if you eat here. At $25/person for dinner, it's only a good value if you eat your fill. You'll get the most variety for your money if you eat with 2-4 people. This place almost warrants four stars. It's really not bad, and I imagine I'll go back. It's a lot of fun to eat here, and nice to know ahead of time what your final bill will be. Each time I re-ordered the dish, the sushi rolls came out in different sizes. It was to the point where the sushi rolls were nearly the size of a coaster! The reason for the low rating is because they post their hours on the front door that they close at 10:00pm, when when we arrived at 9:09, we were greeted with confused looks, and a server telling us, "We close in like 15 minutes." "Your sign says 10:00pm" "Yes, but last call is at 9:15pm" I've worked in the service industry for more than a decade. Last call 45 minutes prior to posted closing time seems a little early to me. My friend saw this place opened and contacted me immediately to check it out! I was so excited to find a new 'all you can eat' sushi buffet. This is a pretty good restaurant. They have a decent selection of wines by glass and bottle, nothing over the top though. Lunch (Monday thur Friday) is $14.99 and all other times are $24.99. The menu makes it a better deal to just do the all you can eat since most of the rolls you would want are $12.99/each. We tried the Deep Fried Scallops (Fish Fry Fancy Finger foods is what it reminded me of. Delicious!! We also tried the Shu Mai (which we didn't prefer at all). For the rolls we ordered, Kyoto Roll (delicious! I would order again), Dynamite (always a favorite), #9 (which might be my favorite roll so far!), Dragon, Spicy Tuna (somewhat spicey not too much though), and the BC roll. I've been to this location numerous times for lunch, on both weekdays and weekends. It's really a great restaurant. Great food, and well worth it if you select the 'all you can eat' option. Your service time does depend on how busy the restaurant is, so I'd suggest ordering multiple items at the same time so you're not caught waiting forever to order. Your experience also depends greatly on whether or not you have a server who can communicate with you, as some staff have a hard time speaking or understanding english. I recommend that if you are placed with a server who cannot verbally communicate with you extremely well, that you slow down and emphasize your order by pointing to what you'd like on the menu. This helps greatly and will prevent you from recieving something you did not actually order. Other than the staffing issues at times, the service really is great.
