    Shrimp noodle dish

Amazing experience with fancy innovative cocktails . We tried various drinks my favorite was the savory cocktail but every drink was thoughtfully created and blended so well even with ingredients you would never guess. Food wise appetizers we tried lobster ragoon with large bites, cabbage was suprisingly good and spicy! We also had the bread service. Main course - lamb was flavorful, fall off the bone but heavy, crab soup was delicious and comforting, shrimp noodles was delicious and we got the duck special and the garlic fried rice stole the show . Small place with cozy ambiance . Finished the dinner with their chocolate bread pudding with a good salt balance and not overly seeet

A delicious, high end Asian fusion restaurant that has a lot to offer. Food: some dishes were fantastic and others were pretty good. The popcorn chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. The lobster ravioli and the gnocchi were excellent. The Chilean sea bass was okay, didn't have that much flavor and I don't feel the need to get it again. Service: pretty good, no complaints. About what you would expect for this price point. Ambiance: a nice vibe. The artwork and lighting were nice.

Meh..bland I have been wanting to try this spot as they were on the STL 100 best list for 2025 and other years, but I guess I let the hype get the best of me. Our food was bland from drinks to dessert. They have an Asian style of cooking but given the location I think they cook for certain kind of clientele. I asked for seasonings for my food. If they have a special event I may return but I could recommend a few less expensive restaurants with bolder flavor. Other than the food, the space is barely accessibility friendly as the exterior walkup is bumpy and has a curb, a larger lip on the door entrance for your coats and makeshift waiting area as there is no host stand. The bathroom is a single tiny low toilet with a hard to push lock on the door and it looks like a closet more than a restroom so blink and you will miss it. The interior lost the cozy modern escape because the front door is always open and if you are on the "bar" side at night the neon blinding kitchen lights are so off putting so always ask to be sat on the left where the bench seating is.

Food: 5 Star Service: 5 Star Been coming here for YEARS and it is one of the few St. Louis establishments that consistently delivers exceptional food and impeccable service. I never hesitate to recommend Akar to friends, coworkers, or clients because I know they'll be well looked after. Love everything on their menu, but if I really had to choose some favorites: - Lobster Ravioli/Rangoon: Luscious and savory, this app is a great start to whet your appetite. - Korean Galbi/Short Ribs: This item comes up as a special and is not on the menu. His recipe comes close to our family's recipe... short ribs are tender and the marinade will leave you licking your fingers. - Scallops: This item comes up often as a special and is not on the menu. Love the integration of Malaysian flavors and various textures in this dish. - Market Fish: Whatever fish he's serving that week- do it.

Food was fantastic and our server was very knowledgable about the menu. I ordered the scallops which has a great kick to them and the portion size was exactly what I was looking for. We really appreciated that Akar was open during the snow storm we were having and the restaurant was very cozy!

Lovely setting for a lovely meal. We began with the wontons in a light chili sauce and the cabbage (listed on the menu as a childhood favorite of the chef). Both were so flavorful and unique. The shrimp noodle boasted huge shrimp. Braised short ribs were tender and the green pea mash was as delicious as it was colorful!

Wowed, wooed, and everything in between. Not just an unforgettable dining experience, but likewise a core memory. A chic, minimalist, contemporary space is so effortlessly designed for the ultimate dining experience. A little moody, ever so sexy the interior is as welcoming as it is seductive. The service was remarkable. Water stayed full. A full smile always while answering questions and offering patience as we were crippled by the intoxicating menu. We settled on okra, cold sesame noodles, gnocci, and grouper. Everything was divine. I'll start with the okra because that brought back childhood nostalgia with a modern twist in the sweet chili saice. Crispy okra, seasoned to perfection drizzled with a light sweet chili sauce that made dreams come true. The sesame cold noodles were spectacular. The mushrooms added beautiful texture. They're a bit creamy, a bit acidic w the sweet pickles, and ever so addictive. The star for me was the gnocci. Pillows that dissolve with every bite. The Malaysian curry was rich, but still so light. One of the most balanced sauces I have ever tasted as it comes to texture. The weight of it on the Gnocci was perfect. The grouper was super. Perfectly salted with a lime/cilantro salsa and some beautiful tumeric rice. Every single item was a hit. What an absolute experience. Officially a top restaurant in stl for me. The amount of regions/cultures they have fused together in their menu is commendable. Execution was beautiful. Can't wait to get back!

Location and ambiance: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Food: 3.5/5 - Plating of the food is good - The flavor and portion size of the lamb shanks is wonderful, but it is overpriced - The mango bread pudding is alright. The flavor of the mango sauce does not complement the bread pudding well. I do not recommend.

Moody ambiance, knowledgeable, friendly service, with great recommendations! Food was fantastic, mocktails available, and veggie friendly :) Street Parking! We came here for a friends birthday, we tried the crispy cauliflower and meatballs as appetizers!! I had the gnocchi and my husband had the lamb shank!! We loved this meal, great for small groups or date night.

This place wow's me every time! I've been trying to eat through their menu and I can say everything has been a delightful experience. Service is good for a slow dining experience. The ambiance is very moody and intimate. Rating this place a 5/5 because it really has that WOW factor :)

Akar is a lovely ethnic twist with a modern industrial vibe inside. We went for a double date and sat down ready to order family style. We had some of the thoughtful house cocktails and ordered the bang bang chicken, sticky rice, burrata and the bread made to order. All were certainly delicious but nothing absolutely blew us away. The butter served with the bread was amazing. For entrees I had the short rib and my wife had the grouper special. The side with the short ribs left a bit to be desired but the short rib was amazing, fall apart, and flavorful. My wife's grouper was spectacular and the sauce served under it was something truly special. All in all great experience, highly recommend Akar.

The food was amazing and flavorful. I was happy that they had vegetarian and vegan options. My husband and I had the gnocchi which the chef's kiss! My brother-in-law had the blue crab donabe and he said it was absolutely divine! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and informed about the specials of the day. The restaurant was vey intimate for a date or a nice girls night out. The decor was very simple yet classy. Reservations are required so be sure to put this restaurant on your list to try soon!

Akar was one of the best fine-dining experiences I've had in St. Louis. With a small, intimate dining room, Akar feels both cozy and elevated and is a great spot for celebrating a special occasion. With such a small dining room, service is very attentive and it doesn't get too loud. All of the food is delicious and beautifully plated: truly a delight for the senses.

    Ask the Community - Akar

    What is the dress code?

I think upscale casual is appropriate. Certainly not blue jeans and a T shirt place but not as dressy as going to The Ritz dining room. It's definitely a casual, friendly vibe.

    Is Akar a chain restaurant?

    No, it is not

Friends are coming to town that I have not seen in a while. Would this be a good place to have a great conversation? Or is it loud and we'd have to yell to hear each other?

It's not too loud, but it's pretty small so if you have a a lot of people, you might want to make sure they can accommodate!

Is this place good beyond the rating. I know some people tend to sugarcoat things and that can lead to the absence of a honest to goodness review. All I ask is that, if I were looking for some quality Asian food, would I go here, and if not, where?

As per my review, some dishes are better than others. It's not truly Asian but more fusion. Hope that answers your question

So just a huge fyi to all diners with those kinds of dietary restrictions. To make a reservation took a lot of forethought and I was looking forward to my experience. The service was questionable - made me feel a little weird when I walked in, but that's fine. We got to our cramped table and got seated. Our waiter was really great though because he was very honest - he immediately told us which items did not work for my restrictions. As mentioned, that ended up being most of the menu, leaving only cold sides/salads as things I could consider. He offered to let us leave (lol) without charging us - because to no-show/cancel a reservation is a hefty fee of 20$ per person. It felt very weird to leave within five minutes of sitting down... So I have to say thank you to the waiter for being knowledgeable about the menu and dietary restrictions. However, for a restaurant with these kinds of ratings (and prices) , I expected so much more. Very non-inclusive of a huge portion of the population who does not eat certain meats. Thank you to the waiters who are honest and know the menu like ours did, but I think the menu could be vastly improved.

I knew they don't take reservations and won't seat an incomplete party, but I still got there a little early just to see if we could grab a table for five. Our server was super friendly and made sure I was taken care of while I waited. As my friends started arriving, he was quick to get them settled in too. We started with some non-alcoholic drinks and spent some time chatting before diving into the menu. It was honestly hard to pick just one thing, so I went with both the chicken pho and fried rice. I knew I wouldn't finish it all, but I really wanted both. Once we ordered, everything moved smoothly--our server checked in, made sure drinks were filled, and kept things organized. When the food came out, everything looked amazing and tasted just as good. Of course, with all the catching up we were doing, it took us a while to finish, but there was no rush at all. When we were ready, he brought the checks and was more than happy to split them out (always appreciate that!). Before leaving, I ordered a to-go meal for my husband and asked for a box for my leftovers. Our server actually took my plate and packed everything up in the back, which I wasn't expecting but really appreciated. He also brought out the to-go order right when it was ready. The service was attentive and friendly. I needed a phone charge at the staff was kind enough to plug my phone at the counter and keep an eye on it. The food was a different twist on what we expected. We sampled their Thai Stix, which relate to a crab Rangoon, but the nicely melted cream cheese is flavored with kankimama and scallions. They are a bit messy, but worth it. Their Hoy Jaw are deep fried dumplings of shrimp, crab and mixed pork, deep fried with a crunchy texture. Both of these small plates come with a bright sweet chili sauce. The chicken satay were tender, moist and came with a peanut sauce that was the perfect blend between almost peanut butter and being too runny. For me, the best part of the meal was the Hung Lay Curry. The dish combines pork belly and pork shoulder, perfect cooked and tender in a curry that includes palm sugar, turmeric, peanuts, and fresh ginger. The curry is not dominated by curry powder, and has a rich, satisfying flavor that can be compared to a rich ramen broth. Spoon the sauce over the rice to let the flavors soak in. For those who think curry is spicy, this dish is not. Instead, it has the comfort food vibe that is a unique for me in eating Thai food. It was moderately busy but was completely packed by the time we left. The space is small but they make it work, and the menu is nice and simple. I did run into a hiccup ordering. I asked for 'no chili' because I can't handle spice, and the waiter came back a few minutes later confused about what to remove, thought I'd said 'celery'. I clarified it was the chili, and he left, then came back again to tell me they actually couldn't remove it since it's mixed into the sauce. So I switched to a different random dish that didn't have chili in the name, hoping that would solve it. Because of the mix up, my food came out a good ten minutes after everyone else's, but by that point I was hungry enough not to care. I ended up with a stir fry with rice on the side which was pretty flavorful and I finished it because I was starving. My friends got the curry and pad thai and both cleaned their plates, so those seemed like good picks too. I loved the hanging plants inside. Overall it was a decent experience, nothing outstanding but nothing bad either, just that repeated confusion over my order that got a little frustrating. Might give it another shot, but it's not high on my list right now.

The bún bò Huế is hands-down one of the best we've ever had. The broth is rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, and we keep telling ourselves we're going to order something different... but we can't stop coming back to the bún bò Huế! The shaking beef is incredibly tender and full of flavor, and the beef curry is another standout that's absolutely worth ordering. Everything tastes fresh, especially the generous plates of herbs and garnishes. The cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, and limes are always fresh, crisp, and plentiful, which really elevates every dish. The service has been outstanding every time we've visited. Everyone is friendly, attentive, and welcoming, and the restaurant is always clean and inviting. The menu has such a huge variety that we've officially decided to make it a date-night challenge to work our way through the entire menu. At this rate, that may take a while because we keep ordering the bún bò Huế over and over! This place is an absolute gem. If you enjoy authentic Vietnamese food, do yourself a favor and give Mai Lee a try. 10/10, highly recommend.
