Unlike Zen Thai and Japanese, this place focuses on noodles and crepes. Yes, crepes! They have savory and sweet ones. I really wanted to try the dessert crepes but I was too full. We started with some fried chicken wanton. Thin, airy and crispy-fried wantons stuffed with ground chicken and served with sweet chili sauce. Very light and crispy and the prefect appetizers for us. I wanted some noodles, specifically the haka noodles but I was swayed when I saw they had Singapore noodles on the menu! I ordered this instead with shrimp. My dish was very flavorful though I added a bit of heat to it since they brought us the condiment caddy. My husband ordered the BBQ pork noodles soup style with egg noodles and enjoyed his dish. He finished the whole thing. I also had one of their homemade Thai green tea which came bottled. I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. I took half of my tea home and about a third of my food. My husband asked if they could just substitute a different type of noodles from one of the other noodle dishes into the drunken noodles, and the waiter said that the noodles in the drunken noodles were large and flat. My husband reiterated to the server that we knew that and asked the question again. The server gave the same response. I am not sure if his intent was to be condescending or if his comprehension was that poor, but with service like that, I have little faith in the quality of the food... By this time, things were beyond frustrating, so we got up and left. We ended up at Sen Thai and had a great meal. Guess we will have to continue to do some Yelp research on other quality Thai restaurants in STL...Chao Baan will remain a mystery for us!

I had to ask for it 3 separate times--waiting 5 to 7 minutes between each request--before it was finally brought out after all the other food was done. The worst part was trying to get the bill. The restaurant was not busy at all; there were only three other tables with 2 to 3 people each. After waiting 10 minutes after finishing our meal, I asked for the bill. I then had to ask 3 more times, waiting 7 to 10 minutes between each ask. The woman who takes the orders and handles the bills walked past us at least 20 times after I asked for the bill. She wasn't even the one serving food or clearing dishes, so there was no excuse. In the end, it was the busboy clearing the dishes who finally went and got us our check. I understand delays when they are busy, but being trapped for 50 minutes just trying to pay a bill in an empty restaurant is unacceptable. Great dumplings, but the front-of-house staff really needs to step up.

My only critique is that I wish it was warmer and not served cold (intentional), but that is certainly a personal preference. The rice roll is made up of sticky rice around pork floss, pickled vegetables, chinese cruller, and, tea egg - all classic ingredients that work so well together. It fell apart towards the end, but it was still delicious eating it with a fork. The soy milk was delicious as well, and you can customize the sweetness by adding your own sugar. It is classically paired with the Chinese cruller (youtiao), but the menu is a bit pricey, so I did not separately order the youtiao. My meal came out to be $26, so I definitely consider this to be a "treat myself" meal. Now I'm most excited for Fan tuan aka Taiwanese rice roll, which has been having its moment on the internet and I believe this is the only place in St Louis that you can get it.
