Tucked away on a side street off Delmar, we decided to try Fork and Stix before catching a show at The Pageant. Unlike the atmosphere in the Thai restaurants in West County, the place is almost austere. That is not a bad thing, because it has outdoor seating available with shade from old neighborhood trees. The service was attentive and friendly. I needed a phone charge at the staff was kind enough to plug my phone at the counter and keep an eye on it. The food was a different twist on what we expected. We sampled their Thai Stix, which relate to a crab Rangoon, but the nicely melted cream cheese is flavored with kankimama and scallions. They are a bit messy, but worth it. Their Hoy Jaw are deep fried dumplings of shrimp, crab and mixed pork, deep fried with a crunchy texture. Both of these small plates come with a bright sweet chili sauce. The chicken satay were tender, moist and came with a peanut sauce that was the perfect blend between almost peanut butter and being too runny. For me, the best part of the meal was the Hung Lay Curry. The dish combines pork belly and pork shoulder, perfect cooked and tender in a curry that includes palm sugar, turmeric, peanuts, and fresh ginger. The curry is not dominated by curry powder, and has a rich, satisfying flavor that can be compared to a rich ramen broth. Spoon the sauce over the rice to let the flavors soak in. For those who think curry is spicy, this dish is not. Instead, it has the comfort food vibe that is a unique for me in eating Thai food. I want to start by giving a heads up that they add an automatic 20% gratuity to your bill without notice or warning. I don't have any qualms with tipping, but I don't think it's fair to have it automatic, especially since the food is already on the pricey side. The interior is very calm and moody. The candles on the table are a nice touch. The service was okay, but for the size of the restaurant it felt a little weird. I usually try to get something that can easily be compared to other restaurants and determined if I will come back. I opted for the pad Thai. While not the worst pad Thai I've had, it was one of the more expensive. My noodles were dry and clumpy. It was hard to eat and required water. There was an unremarkable amount of chicken for the price. The flavor was also quite underwhelming. The quantity was also questionable. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back here. A small place within walking distance from the Pagaent, my rating is based more on their food than the ambiance*. We had the Laab Gai (wonderful - $10), Spring rolls (Very good - 2 for 3.50), and the Tamarind Shrimp (VERY good - 4 prawns for $13), for the latter the waitress arranged to have the sauce on the side. The dish we were looking forward to the most was the Tom Yum soup, but it was honestly one of the worst Tom Yum soups I've ever had. The flavor was very weak and watered down, even the color was completely clear with no red tone at all. Second, the service was unbelievably slow, and the explanations we received kept changing. When we first asked why our food still had not arrived, one server told us it was because we were a "big party." Later, another server said their order-printing machine had run out of paper, so our order never printed and the kitchen had only just started making our food. Which one was the real reason? What made it worse was that we could clearly see a table next to us -- who arrived after us -- already eating their meals while we were still waiting. By the time our food finally came out, that table had already finished eating. The most unacceptable part was the manager's attitude when we tried to express our dissatisfaction while paying. Instead of apologizing, the manager accused us of "making things up" and kept coming up with excuses to deny the delay. On top of that, the manager became rude and personally disrespectful during the conversation, saying we were "changing our story," talking "in circles," and even directly telling us to stop talking and "SHUP UP" !!! I have never seen a restaurant manager argue with customers so aggressively and disrespectfully instead of trying to resolve the issue professionally. My husband and I came here for a dinner date last weekend and were so delighted! It was our first time at Fork & Stix, and it was so cozy and chic. I love how it's tucked away around the corner of a side street of Delmar. It has a great neighborhood feel to it that escapes the chaos of the Loop! A friend and I went here because it was recommended by a couple we met at the art museum and noticed we were looking at yelp for a place nearby to have supper. She said her favorite dish was khao soi which I ordered and really enjoyed. I have been craving it ever since. My friend ordered Khao pad and she loved it. We split the egg rolls which were hot and crispy. I ordered the muu ping and it was sweet and tasty...it did have some fat on it that I removed, but some may love that. The waitress was sweet and attentive. It's kind of a darker quiet place and when we pulled up we weren't even sure if it was open. A charming out of the way place that you wouldn't just "find" on your own. The food was served piping hot and so delicious. We had the (hoy jaw)dumplings which were fried and packed with meat, the Thai stix which were good but not outstanding and the chicken sateh which was very tasty with a coconut milk glaze that had lots of flavor. Others in our party had the Jungle curry and Pad Ka Prao. The highlight were the amazing cocktails. Fabulous service for dinner and the food was excellent as well. I met a friend here for dinner with me arriving early. So I started off with a beer and the "Hoy Jaw" dumplings that arrived a few minutes later. Shrimp, crab, pork all mixed and served with a sweet Thai chili mix that was perfect for dipping. Yummy and it was my intention to save half for my friend, I ended up eating them all. Oops. I heard that it was the Khao Soi was the thing to have, so that's what I ordered with chicken. It was flavorful, loaded with texture and delicious. A curry soup with Thai egg noodles and greens, I'd skip the crispy egg noodles on top next time as they were in the way a lot. My friend ordered a Pad Thai, asking for "9" level of heat. He spent the first half of his meal saying that he couldn't find the hot and the second half asking for more water. Funny. So there you go. This was my first time visiting this restaurant. I was craving Thai food, specifically the spicy Papaya salad. It was close by so I decided to stop in. It is a small quaint restaurant. The inside feels so comfortable, the live plants hanging from the ceiling, its not necessarily fancy but its a vibe. you feel like you entered another slower world. The waitress was friendly and helpful. I was ordering to go and it came out quick and hot and get this AFFORDABLE. I also ordered chicken tom yum soup OMG!!! its so tangy, spicy, refreshing. The vibes are warm and inviting, and it's a great place to eat with a friend or even take a date! They do have specialty cocktails - which you might think is not the move at a place like this. LOVELY place! I read an article that said they had the best Khao Soi of any Thai restaurant in Saint Louis, so HAD to check it out. I must say, I've never had Khao Soi before, and I LOVED it! Might be a problem, because from the sounds of it, other places might not measure up? The service was VERY good, with the exception of the waiter assuming we'd only need one bill. I truly don't understand why waiters/waitresses don't ASK before printing off the bill! It would be SO MUCH EASIER for everyone! One of the things I loved about this restaurant was the smaller menu. It's a pleasant enough looking room but the acoustics rendered the noise level fairly loud. Service was friendly and well intended, but my soup was served as an afterthought after the mains arrived. Food was nothing that'd have me return; my rice with chicken and veggies was dried out and not served hot causing the rice to clump together. Sent it back and the next attempt, while better, lacked significant taste. My dining partner had noodles with veggies which had more flavor, but she likened it to food court preparation and presentation--again, not served as hot as it should've been. A friend suggested this restaurant. She had read about a top Thai restaurant rating and that Fork & Stix was famous for their Khao Soi. We started out with the Crispy Spring Rolls. They were delicious dipped in the sweet chili sauce. I would have never ordered the Khao Soi if it wasn't for the recommendation. I tried it with tofu and absolutely loved it! This curry soup is excellent with the crispy egg noodles topping. Just the right spice level for me (I don't do spices well). Our waiter was friendly and answered all our menu questions well. What a yummy surprise! My partner absolutely loves Thai food, but our usual spots have been missing the mark lately-- maybe they got a new chef or something, but they were coming up really salty. It was a perfect excuse for us to go on the hunt for something we hadn't tried before, and we were drawn in by the great reviews for Fork and Stix. We weren't disappointed! The atmosphere was delightful, with rich emerald walls, a beautiful foresty mural, and hanging baskets and planters all over with pothos, Boston ferns, and begonias. So pretty. We ordered Thai iced coffees (kafae yen), red curry with chicken, and pad ka prao with beef. My partner asked for his to be hot and he was pleased that his pad ka prao was spiced up with fresh Thai chillies instead of the dried stuff. My red curry had way too much bamboo, but it was so delicious otherwise (and I was full with everything else anyway) that I didn't mind. The red and green bell peppers were positively delicious in that curry. The curry was supposed to be mild, but it still made my nose run. I didn't mind because it was so tasty. I kept drizzling it on my rice after I ran out of chicken and peppers. I didn't love the coffee-- it had an almost bourbony flavor. My partner really enjoyed it though. If you wonder what food might actually taste like in Thailand but can't travel halfway around the world to find out, just come here! The dishes have authentic Thai flavors that you don't often find and a great menu. They even serve water in tin cups like they do on the streets of Thailand. Sai Oua $9 - Thai sausage and sticky rice. The sticky rice is served in the most adorable traditional weaved steaming basket. Thai sausages were legit. Crispy Spring Rolls (2) $3.50 - Crunchy and delicious, a crowd favorite. Tum Yum Soup Chicken $4 - Medium spicy gives this soup the perfect kick if you can handle the heat. It's loaded with chicken, mushrooms and vegetables. Muu Ping $9 - Sweet tender marinated lean pork meat on a stick, a classic Thai street food. The sticky rice is served in the most adorable traditional weaved steaming basket. Naam Prik Nuum $4 - Special Thai dip served with steamed vegetables (broccoli and carrots). Unique flavor. Pad Ka Prao with Tofu $16 - They offered 3 spicy levels: Mild, Medium and Hot. Hot was definitely Thai hot, about reached the peak of my tolerance in the best way. The food and drinks were absolutely amazing. The place is super cute in the inside. Those were the only things good about the place honestly. The service, if you could call it that, was so bad. I don't know who our server was, but the teenager who greeted us seemed distracted, "wrote" down our drinks and food and then left. The support staff made sure our waters were full and the tables were pre-bussed constantly (probably to quickly flip the table after we left). I get trying to get people in and out and make money but dang, they really try to get you in and out fast and then forget about you after you eat so you sit there for 15 minutes waiting for the check while they do side work and talk with each other behind the bar. First off we never got our drinks until after the meal.... Only our appetizers and food came out and by the time we got our food I noticed we still had not gotten our drinks. We finished our food before we even got our drinks. I had to call over the support staff and ask them where our drinks were- the girl who first greeted us looked LOST and looked back at us like we were crazy. So the support staff girl came over and asked what drinks we wanted so I had to ask for the drink menu again so I could point them out. We got our drinks 10 minutes after we ordered them again... never once did they apologize or offer to take off the drinks. Another table who sat 20 minutes after us got their drinks before us. I was so excited to try to drinks since I'm a craft cocktail maker and they were all very interesting but I couldn't even get the first so I most certainly didn't want to stay for a second. It's just a bunch of teenagers running the restaurant with an older woman making the drinks. She left for 30 minutes to go delivery food I guess, which means no drinks for the other customers were made and the teens looked so lost and were trying to read the drink menu confused on how to make them.... I don't even think they're old enough to make drinks so it makes sense why they weren't making them in the first place but also why they didn't know how to make them or where to find the alcohol for them. I almost jumped up and asked if they needed help because I could see customers getting agitated and annoyed at the long wait for their drinks. It should never take more than 10 minutes for a drink to get to the table led alone a Diet Coke or hot tea. Again, it took us forever to get our check because they were all behind the bar talking, cleaning silverware and doing side work. IF I go back I will be ordering togo and that's it. It is quaint and intimate. Perfect for the first or 50th date. We started with the thai stix which are their version of a crab rangoon. Basic of us, I know. But, they were great. Not the best ran-goons I have had in St. Louis, but I certainly put them near the top of the list. The sweet chili sauce that accompanied them was also wonderfully balanced between sweet and sour. For entrees, I got the pad ka prao with shrimp. The broth at the bottom of the bowl was wonderfully salty and savory adding an incredible flavor to the vegetables and shrimp. My partner got the pad kee mao. She enjoyed it, but mentioned it did not wow her. I thought it was quite flavorful and enjoyed the few bites I had. The sauce had a fantastic sweetness with a good amount of spice to balance it out. They had some specials that sounds delicious(mango rice) but we decided to pass on them. I would love to go back and try more items including the hoy jaw and muu ping. The only problem we ran into was when we walked in there was a wait so we just got into a line and were not quite sure what to do. There was no hostess checking folks in. We waited about 20 minutes then a server came in and made a list of all the people waiting in line and we were seated chronologically. Every time I visit a Thai restaurant I search for Khao Soi and, most of the time, I strike out. But not this time. Fork & Stix serves it and, above all, they make it with chicken breast and not bone-in chicken. The dish had excellent flavors and just the right amount of spice. Plenty of broth to warm you up. The other thing I loved at Fork & Stix was their Thai iced tea with lime juice (cha manao), which is also hard to find at most Thai restaurants. I went here for dinner last night. I asked the server what could be made vegan. She went and checked with the owner and came back to tell me the owner said they have no vegan options. I asked if I could get something without egg and fish sauce whether it would be vegan and the server just reiterated that nothing on the menu is vegan.
