They used to be partners of Taike Shabu Shabu, the biggest Taiwanese restaurant in St Louis area back in the day so you know the food would be fire. My favorite is their fried boneless chicken leg, which would be offered for free if your order is over $50. It tastes almost the same as the one I had in Taiwan. It's crispy on the outside and super tender on the inside. Another dish that I love from here is the braised beef noodles soup. The broth was so flavorful and the meat was super soft. It's the best that I have had in the Stl area. Other dishes that I would recommend are the Hakka stir fried and the fish with black bean sauce but overall you can't really go wrong with anything. I have had this business in my collections for so long. I was so excited to eat there and setup a girls dinner with a bestie. We arrived and found a seat in the dining room. We both received notifications that our food would be ready in 20 mins. We waited. And waited. We watched very little food come out (there were people walking in for to go orders). This is one of my favorites in St. Louis. I may be a little biased being a Taiwanese American, but everyone I have brought here has thoroughly enjoyed it. Here are a few dining tips: - Whether you are dining in or carrying out, order ahead of time. When the restaurant first opens, they are normally bombarded by takeout orders so if you go in and order, the wait may be up to 40 mins. - On weekdays, I usually just see the chef (Vicki) running the whole show, so be patient with the staff. Sometimes the chef/owner will just ask you to order online as she's cooking in the back and it makes it easier for her. - The restrooms are attached to the building, but you'll need to ask for the key and walk outside to the back. The restaurant has Americanized classics like General Tso's and Orange Chicken, but also has more authentic Taiwanese dishes. Here are my recommendation on dishes: - Three cup chicken - This is a classic Taiwanese dish, and Vicki does it well. - Braised pork rice - We get this every single time. Both because it's delicious, but also because my kids love it and will eat a whole order of it. We'll usually get at least 2 orders of this everytime. - Shredded pork with dried bean curd - My favorite dish. I could eat this one everyday. This hits home because my mom would make this pretty often as well. Kitchen 95 has a good one, that's not too oily. - Salt and pepper tofu - Even my friend that didn't like tofu, really enjoyed this dish. When I brought my co-workers to eat here, this was one of the favorites. This is one I would recommend eating in house because if you bring it home, it'll steam in the container and lose it's crispiness (though you could just pop it in the often and crisp it up again). - Popcorn chicken - Another nostalgic dish for me. The chef at Kitchen 95 used to work at Tai Ke, our favorite Taiwanese restaurant in Saint Louis, so we were curious to try out Kitchen 95 which is a little further out of the way for us. It was totally worth it and we enjoyed some of the same menu items along with trying new entrees. The breaded pork chop was perfectly fried, and my in-laws LOVED the 3-cup chicken which comes with basil and is braised in a savory sweet sauce. Wuxi ribs were also perfectly tender and flavorful. My favorite comfort food is always lu rou fan (minced pork over rice) and Kitchen 95's version hit the spot with its saucy pork served over rice with a braised marinated egg on the side. I LOVE the stir fry eggplant with basil. Very tender and a great flavor. The crab rangoon is also very good -- it's on the savory side, which I like a lot better than the sweet ones. My big complaint is I wish they were open earlier. The earliest pick up for lunch is between 12:15 and 12:30 (but is usually closer to 12:30pm) and for dinner is between 5:15 and 5:30 (but again, usually isn't until 5: 30pm). Don't sleep on kitchen 95! The food was absolutely amazing. The dumplings were my favorite. They had just the right amount of heat. I got the general tso combo box and everything was fresh and bomb. The restaurant itself is pretty small, our group of 8 took the majority of seating (there were about two or three other tables). We read about this place in the RFT which gave a glowing review and they indeed lived up to the hype! Knowing the owners are Taiwanese we went with classic Taiwanese choices - we had the wontons in chili oil, fried tofu with kimchi, chili popcorn shrimp, Hakka stir fry, and tomato and eggs. We were so impressed by all we tried! The wontons were don't perfectly with just the right amount of spice, the fried tofu was perfectly crispy and paired perfectly with the sweet/tangy kimchi. The popcorn shrimp is actually very lightly breaded large shrimp with a hint of crisp in a sweet chili mayo sauce. The Hakka stir fry was perfect - amazing flavor. Classic. The tomato and eggs was a bit on the sweet side and heavy on the ketchup but still good. We will definitely be back as there are other menu items we want to try! To other reviewers who don't understand why they may get the Asian fusion description, this is indeed fusion of Taiwanese and Chinese cuisine and done beautifully! Finally another taiwanese restaurant in St. Louis! And finally the ONLY taiwanese place with legit popcorn chicken. This is drive-30-mins-home-and-it's-still-good popcorn chicken. Honestly reminds me of the night markets in Taiwan. All the dishes are good, but I would specifically order the Taiwanese specialities. Aside from the popcorn chicken, I'd recommend their Hakka stir fry (if you like squid), shredded pork with dry bean curd, steamed beef shank, and Szechuan beef with leek. Picked up food on Christmas Eve. It was hot and ready at the scheduled time and the staff could not have been more welcoming and grateful for our business. Most of us have probably learned by now that that humble looking eateries can often mean the best food and Kitchen 95 is no exception. Everything was very clean tasting and fresh. Egg rolls were appropriately crisp and ingredients were perfectly cooked. Pot stickers were were the ideal balance of meet and dough and pan fried to expert caramelization. Stir fry noodles were deliciously seasoned with that texture and light chew that seems to be elusive in a lot of Asian take out we've tried. As another reviewer mentioned, the hot and sour soup is not to be missed. They don't go overboard with the corn starch (no goo factor) and the combination of sour and spice is a winner. Favorite dishes for me were the popcorn chicken and stir fried eggplant. Garlic bok choi was good too. Clean, fresh flavors with great harmony of seasonings. And, unlike some Asian restaurants that cater to bland, American tastes, Kitchen 95 is not afraid to season their food in unique and unexpected ways. Not a weak dish in the lot.
