What a difference half a mile makes. We just came from the Howard red line CTA train stop and it feels so much safer here. No let's check the food out. The place is cute. Feels really well authentic over use word I know. We had the chicken mole(red) and the taco salad both were fine that includes the complementary salsa. It the best is the banana churros! I felt guilty that I arrived a little before closing. But the guy behind the counter was super friendly and greeted me warmly. He offered me some water will I waited. I ordered the Bistec ala Mexicana. I even had a choice of flour or corn tortillas. I also got some salsa and chips with a churro. The place was clean with awesome murals on the wall. The steak was tender with a char flavor as well as the peppers and onion. The sauce was tasty as I used the tortillas to sop up the sauce. The veggies were done beautifully and not cooked to mush. The two hot sauces were very distinct and added flavor to each bite. The refried beans were creamy and I love that it had whole beans. I was craving some good ol tacos so I decided to give this place a try. When you walk in, it is so clean that you can literally see it sparkle. Not only is the dining area clean but the kitchen is spotless. Customer service is beyond amazing and what will keep me going back. The owner is so kind and welcoming, invites you to sit and have a glance at the menu and just enjoy. I ordered 3 steak tacos and my dad ordered steak tostadas. The owner was so kind that he even gave us some extra treats to go with our order on the house. How kind is that?! Wandered in here on a whim since it's new and right around the corner from my home. I was in the mood for fish tacos so I ordered the 3 taco dinner with tilapia, tinga, and al pastor. The tacos were good but the star of the plate was definitely the rice and beans! They are exactly what I'm looking for when I want Mexican food. The staff was also super sweet. While we were not regulars at the restaurant previously at this address, we figured we had to give Akay a try since we are walking distance and this is the closest of the Mexican restaurants to home. Chips were warm and a great roasted pico de gallo along with two salsas in squeeze bottles. The green stood out - a little creamy (avocado?) and tartness of lime? Went for the sopes dinner to try out something with fresh masa from their menu and then it was 4 different tacos: quesabirria, al pastor, lengua and barbecoa de res. All were good but lengua and al pastor were stellar. (I had forgotten that quesbirria and barbecoa de res are similar in terms of the meat. Tortillas are factory made but the quality of the meats make up for that trade off. Had a small horchata - rich and at the bottom you see the ground rice/powder that I should have stirred up to finish it. Akay Tacos kept Cuetzala's painted ceiling and murals and service is excellent by Geo (kudos to Yvonne L getting the names of the owners). Just one week since opening so lots of tables available...go ahead and park behind the building and walk around to the front. read more

An excellent experience top to bottom! The food was INCREDIBLE and the service was top notch. We ordered the guacamole to start and it was delicious, on the chunky side with lots of cilantro if you're into that (I am lol). The roasted salsa was a great addition as well. We got chilaquiles and the tinga, al pastor, asada, and campechano tacos. The tacos were gone instantly (they are that good) standout being the Al Pastor, for sure. Chilaquiles were bomb -- a decent amount of food though so make sure you're hungry! There's a couple pretty murals on the walls that are a nice touch to the place which seems either new or slept on... perhaps both. Prices are reasonable and the staff is super kind and friendly, will definitely be returning. 10/10 would recommend!!! read more

This place is truly a hidden gem of Rogers Park. It's a small authentic family owned hole-in-the-wall vibe. The staff and owner are always so friendly and create some of the best Mexican my partner and I have had. They even helped to remake an order for free one time upon realizing uber eats app had made a mistake. Highly recommend this place for takeout or a quick dine in. BEST MEXICAN FOOD I'VE HAD IN ROGERS PARK YET!!!! I had the shrimp and skirt steak and it was so so good. The steak was tender and flavorful and the shrimp were perfectly seasoned and cooked. I had actually planned on going out to eat at a great place in Ravenswood Manor that had excellent shrimp tacos, only to find out that it had closed, and so I was a little disappointed and didn't expect to like this place so much, but now I'm very glad I came here. PLUS, it was very reasonably priced. I was also served a complimentary churro and it was the best churro I've ever tasted. So I plan on coming back and trying more food in the near future. I have a confession-- I only eat red meat twice a year-- so when I both recommend and praise a red meat offer- BUY IT! Their Takay taco- a skirt steak taco-- it was FABULOUS!! They cook it the way YOU LIKE IT-- the quality it the best-- and I am VERY fussy. It does cost more than the others-- but they give you a more than generous portion-- and the quality is the best! It is more than worth it. I got it with a shrimp taco-/ and it was fabulous as well. The salsas are DIVINE-- homemade-- made from scratch-- I told you I am fussy-- and I like spicy-- and the red is HOT!! The green is more mild-- but scrumptious. The service is excellent-/ I need curbside because of handicap placards-- they are more than accommodating-- just a hidden hem with fresh, homemade ingredients that are the best on the night you don't want to cook. Stopped in for Mexican food. The service was so welcoming and friendly. We were given chips and salsa. The chips were fresh. I got the steak taco dinner and loved the rice. I'm not a big rice person but it was so good. The steak had great flavor. The tacos were fresh and hot. My husband got a steak burrito and he loved it. He especially liked that it had avocado in it. This neighborhood gem just opened a week ago. In the same location as another beloved Mexican restaurant the new owners, Alfonso and Angela Avila are wonderful hosts. Every dish we had was outstanding. My partner and I are big Lengua lovers and it's hard to find in Chicago these days. But this restaurant was willing to create a lengua platter not on the menu with our choice of sauce so we selected one in rich Mole sauce and another in a green tomatillo sauce. Both were tender and delicious. Our friend ordered chiles rellenos; at first she only ordered one not knowing whether she would like it and they were very accommodating since an order usually comes with two. Of course after she had one it was so good she had to order another one! Our other friend loved his costillas de puerco or pork ribs in green tomatillo sauce. We were so excited to have this high quality restaurant in Rogers Park that we asked the helpful server, Geo, to meet the chef. He happily introduced the chef who turns out to be his father Alfonso and his mother Angela who are running the kitchen. This is their first restaurant as a family although they have been working in various restaurants and kitchens in Chicago. Alfonso had a restaurant in Mexico but this is his first family enterprise in Chicago. He is related to the family that owned the restaurant in this location so that's why they decided to continue in our beloved neighborhood. Everyone from our wonderful server to the owners did everything possible to make our dining experience so enjoyable. While there are many Mexican restaurants on Clark Street in particular in Rogers Park, this one deserves your attention and in our minds offers exceptional food and hospitality. Try them because we want them to be around for a long time and just like the previous restaurant, it is BYOB so a wonderful place to relax and enjoy great food and warm ambiance! As we were leaving, Geo ran out to let us know that on Father's Day they will have a mariachi band in the afternoon so another reason to check them out and celebrate! read more

We were in the area, and found this awesome place online! There were 4 of us, and we all loved what we ordered. All the ingredients were fresh and the presentation was nice as well. The room has a couple stunning murals- and everything is very clean. Nice restroom too. We decided to do takeout from AKAY, based on the positive reviews. I'm glad we did! I ordered directly from their website, and the food was ready in about 15 minutes. No hidden fees or costs if you order directly, by the way. When I arrived, they were just boxing everything up, so it was hot and fresh. The restaurant was empty, which was surprising for a Friday night, but it was a pleasant and sunny space. The owner was very friendly, and tossed in a complimentary choco flan with our order. I had a lot to carry, so he offered to grab the door for me, which was a really nice gesture. We did end up having one order of beans missing, but I will blame it on them being in a rush because I came super early for the pickup. Everything was absolutely delicious. Most noticeable was the quality of the meat (we had dishes with chicken, pork, and steak, and they were all wonderful). We will definitely go back. Maybe next time we'll eat in! read more

I had just heard of Quesa Birrias. At 57, I can't believe there is a Mexican food I'd never heard of. After searching, I found out there is a restaurant, in my neighborhood (!) that serves these (cheesy hard shell tacos that come with a broth for dipping(!) like an Italian Beef from Mexico. Absolutely delicious. This small restaurant is family owned, family run; mom and dad are in the kitchen. Our waiter, their son. Restaurant, spotless, Service superior, Food, excellent. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. Get in there & be sure to try the Birriias! Guacamole very good.... (I always add salt). Complimentary churros as we paid our check. The only thing [neg] I can say about this place is; they're closed on Tuesdays, so no chance to go there for Taco Tuesdays. :( But I can rest assured, that I'll be enjoying them on other days of the week. read more

This place while quiet, was very good. It's a small little Mexican restaurant with very friendly staff and I assume I also met the owner/manager. Food was quite quick to be ready, though I ordered an Al pastor sopres, and a dinner of 3 lengua tacos so I'd be surprised if it took too long. The horchata was nice, fairly sweet but not overly so. Good balance of cinnamon and vanilla. The sopres was topped almost so tall that I had difficulty figuring out the best way to bite it, but overall was a great item once I got the hang of it. Lengua was good, fairly light seasoning but that let the stronger flavor and slightly bouncy texture show through. I don't usually love corn tortillas, and I'm not sure if they're made in house, all I can say is that they were definitely better than I've usually had. They offered me a churro to try at the end, and while I was already very full, I took them up on the offer. It was freshly fried, nice and hot. It was lightly dusted with cinnamon sugar. I appreciated it being not absolutely covered in sugar, though because of that it was fairly rich due to the fried dough being more prominent. I would've appreciated something to cut it or maybe a little dolce de leche sauce on the side to help take away from the prominent fried flavor. That's just my thoughts though it was overall fairly tasty. Lastly the table condiments were nice. They bring a bowl of hot chips and some roasted tomato Pico de gallo which was nice. It had pretty much has no spice which isn't unexpected but I would like just a touch more than it had. The table salsas were fine. I liked the green one more, though it was mostly a creamy (avacado?) lime drizzle than a salsa to me. Overall, I'd give it a bit under 5 stars. It's not technically perfect to me, but considering the price, and that a lot of that is my personal preferences it's very good.
