Four of us (two adults and two kids) visited Sabroso! Mexican Grill for the first time during a trip to Chicago. I must admit that I had low expectations because quite frankly, I have not enjoyed Mexican food outside of Mexico or California. However, we were hungry, and it was near where we were staying, so I decided we should check it out, and I am so glad we did! The food was great. Both adults and the VERY picky children in our group all enjoyed our meals. I ordered the green chicken enchiladas and the other adult ordered a chile relleno combo, which I also got to try. Everything was delicious and devoured by all! We were so full but the owner talked us into the chocoflan, and we did not regret trying it. It was soooo good! Speaking of the owner, the service was great. We really enjoyed how he and the rest of the staff were very courteous. It is a small establishment, and it gets a good amount of people, so I assume that there are waits during peak hours. I highly recommend Sabroso! My husband and I had a great meal here. We were welcomed with complimentary chips and salsa. I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas, and he had the Sabroso burrito with grilled chicken--both were excellent. The service was especially noteworthy. Our server was very friendly and thoughtfully let me know that the rice is made with chicken broth, offering double beans or a side salad instead. As a vegetarian, I really appreciated that attention to detail. The restaurant is small, cozy, and clean. Stopped in for lunch, and the food absolutely impressed me. Enchiladas are one of my favorite treats, and Sabroso makes excellent Enchiladas. I placed a to‑go order on a Wednesday afternoon, and my food was ready the moment I walked in.Parking, however, is extremely tight. There's a bus stop directly in front of the restaurant, so those spaces are off‑limits. Ashland Ave had no available parking for a couple of blocks, and the nearest side street is permit‑only. I eventually found a spot about a block and a half west on a side street. I imagine parking would be even more difficult during dinner hours. This storefront has about a dozen tables and has bright and charming decor. Despite the parking hassle, the food was absolutely worth the trip. read more

The service here when you're dining in is top notch. I had ordered once from them in the past during brunch. I was craving chilaquiles. It didn't hit the spot but I think that was because I had a long drive home so it got cold and soggy. The other day I went to check out my friend's new apartment and was starving so I looked for food in the area. To my surprise, this was right down the street. So I popped in, got seated promptly and asked the waitress what was the best thing on the menu. She said chicken fajitas. So I ordered chicken fajitas. It came out piping hot. Those chicken fajitas with flour tortillas and a Mexican coke made my night. The chicken was so flavorful and there was so much food. Very enjoyable evening out for dinner after a hard work week. We searched around and tried to find places to try some yummy Mexican food. I am from California and on the search to find really Mexican food it has been a hard find on the north side of Chicago. We had never been here or never even seen it to be honest and we drive on Ashland often but I'm so glad it popped up with positive reviews on yelp. Ultimately, we ended up getting a California burrito and also some tacos. While we waited for our meal to be delivered to the table. We were treated with complementary salsa and chips. I really enjoyed the green salsa as it had some spice to it. For drinks, we got ice cold Jarritos from the fridge and they even offered us ice filled glasses. These drinks are a childhood favorite of mine and they had my number one flavor so definitely had to go ahead and order that to wash down my burro. My California burrito was good but I think the next time I'll just get a Carne Asada burrito or try the Birria Ramen. All at all, this was a really good experience. They had a bustling takeout system going on. I think more food was heading out of the restaurant than being died inside. They also had two patio areas which were dog friendly. One last thing is this place is bring your own bottle so I didn't see a couple people smart enough to bring their own bottle and the next time I go I will be bringing my own bottle to enjoy inside the restaurant to check this place out. read more

California Burrito with Carne Asada was tasteless and had very very little meat. One of the worst burritos I have had in the city and certainly not worth the $17 plus service fee and tip. Literally had to search around the burrito to find any meat. It was in there but barely any. La Biznega up in Lakeview is much better and give you 5x more meat for the same money. read more

Had an amazing experience here! We were able to call ahead and reserve a table for 10 people. They have free chips and salsa that came with 2 salsas. They refilled the chips and salsa in a timely manner. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. The chicken tostada and the breakfast burrito were both delicious. It was a great value as well. I came for a late weekday lunch and was glad to see how busy it was--plenty of seating but lots of people getting food, always a good sign! The waitstaff were so sweet and friendly. And the carne asada fajitas? HUGE. More than enough for 2 meals. Perfectly seasoned, and served sizzling with all the sides imaginable. As a San Diego Native spending months on end in the City of Broad Shoulders it wasn't Mexican food I was craving bc Chicago has a top tier Mexican scene. It was a California burrito that i was craving. MY other transplants found Sabrosos and after talking with the owner we asked why they add beans and lettuce, for no other reason that value (traditional owners try to add beans for carb filling and lettuce for color and texture), but the beauty of the burrito is the balance of the burrito without it. They oblige us, but wont change it event hough they've never been to San Diego or had the real thing, but it's not really the type of place you'd find it. We are more taco shops while this is Mexican cuisine, so I get their business model not being fast, on the go and munchies type eating. Always get your CAB and CAF withough the beans (that's a Mission Burrito style in SF) The decor is comforting, family. The service is great, prices are affordable and all good reasons they survived COVID when many places didn't. It's a restaurant and not a shop, so the platings are dining and not eating. I enjoy everything I've had on the menu from their chilaquiles, tamales (not the mother in law style) and B&C type foods. read more

We live down the street and this is our new go-to Mexican spot. Fast, delicious and great service. I really like the salsas, although the hot sauce is not hot enough for me personally. Sporadically wanted some Mexican food and decided to stop by. The service was great due to the friendliness and speed. Our server was very helpful and welcoming which made the trip even better. The chips are fresh and the salsa delicious. I'd say that the green salsa was the best. The red pozole with pork is a very flavorful dish but can be overwhelming if you decided to eat the whole bowl yourself. I'd recommend sharing this dish. The ultimate fajitas entree was delicious, but mainly because of the sauces that accumulated on the bottom of the platter from cooking. The meat and vegetables didn't have seasoning, but it wasn't a bad thing. This allowed the juices from the everything to really shine. The portions are also really big for a great price. You probably won't finish this on your own. At the end our server gave us the chocoflan for free. Unfortunately, while the flan itself was fine, the sauce on top was very artificial tasting. This degraded the dish in our opinion. Based on my trip this place is a solid 4.5 out of 5 and I would recommend giving it a shot. read more

Stopped in a little later on a weekday, say around 8pm. It's a small place and it was pretty full. I got lucky and was able to snag the one open table by the window. The waiter came right away and brought me a water and complimentary chips and 2 types of salsa. They were both super fresh and tasty. I ordered the al pastor enchiladas with red sauce. The enchiladas were really good! They came with a good amount of tender meat and a side of rice and beans, both were incredibly flavorful. The red sauce was delicious too. Towards the end of my stay some live musicians came in with a big family. The music was soooo loud that I could barely hear anything else. You couldn't have a conversation or hear the waiter. The place is just too small to have live music like that. There's barely any space as it is. Luckily I was just about done, but it definitely would've put a damper on an otherwise great experience. read more

We came to this little restaurant today for the first time and it was awesome! I saw the recommendation and pics online backed with a lot of enthusiasm, so I was surprised when we pulled up and, not only was there no wait, but we were one of only three groups in the small restaurant. Jesus, gave us "above and beyond" customer service, making us feel like we were actually guests in his home. I ordered the chorizo chilaquiles, and while I was debating between red or green salsa, Jesus said he'd do half and half. My fiancé ordered the poblano breakfast burrito. A few minutes later my jaw dropped as the hugest plate of food was placed in front of me--I don't think the pics will do it justice, it easily could have fed both me and my fiancé. The chips still had the perfect bit of crunch, and they did not skimp on the chorizo. It also came with potatoes and toast. The salsas were mildly spicy but full of flavor. I only took a bite but poblano burrito was delicious as well. Both Jesus and another server came to check on us several times, brining us ketchup, sour cream, and taking away dirty dishes and napkins. After our leftovers were boxed up, Jesus came back with a plate of chocolate flan for us since it was our first visit. It was delicious and a very nice final gesture to cap off a great experience.
