Huaraches Dona Chio is definitely a hidden neighborhood gem. I stumbled upon this mom n pop restaurant after a quick google search for Mexican food in the area. This was such a lovely surprise! I ordered the huarache with Al pastor and Asada, and it was huge, I had plenty of leftovers. It was absolutely delicious, made with fresh ingredients and tasted 100% homemade. For such an unassuming restaurant, their food sure does pack a punch! Unfortunately, I was really looking forward to my horchata and this one tasted a little watered down. I really didn't know what to expect from this place. I'm Mexican and I've never had Huaraches before. The price seemed expensive, especially without knowing what the size was. I called in my order and the food was ready by the time I arrived. The place is small and the it's on such an awkward street. Literally no parking on Elmdale. I had to circle all the way around the block to find parking. The place itself is very tiny, there were no diners and the only staff working appeared to be the owners and their young son. The son took my payment while the dad handed me the food. Heavy ass bag for three Huaraches...That's a good sign. I ordered three Huaraches. All three with asada. My wife and son both wanted salsa Roja, so I ordered mine with salsa verde. These huaraches were huge. The tortilla was hand made, it was thick and tasted freshly made. I will say the salsa roja won this time. It's way better than the green. It had so much flavor and really elevated the dish. It's helped bring all the ingredients together. Unfortunately the asada wasn't skirt steak but perhaps not needed. Overall a very delicious meal with zero regrets. My entire family loved it and we can't wait to return. read more

I got takeout from here, and the food was delicious. I ordered a huarache with 2 toppings (pastor and asada), a pastor tostada, and a tinga tostada. Everything was piled high with meat. I loved the huarache. The dough on the bottom was soft, and the meats were flavorful and juicy. The tostadas were good, too. Can't speak much about the service because I got takeout. The store is on a side street, and it has a few tables inside if you want to dine in. Because it is on a side street rather than the main street, it feels quieter. I would give 4.5 if that was an option. Three of us stopped for huaraches. This was our first time trying this preparation of masa. They were filling - mine made for three meals for me. The salsas were very tasty as well. I highly recommend the fried egg topping selection - they were perfect. The space on the day we visited was unbearably hot - and I worried for those working inside. However there is a park down the black that made for a nice outdoor eating arrangement. First time I had a huarache outside of Mexico, and am definitely impressed. I ordered the huarache sencillo with salsa verde, and it was delicious! The dough was perfectly made, and the amount of toppings was just right. I asked for extra salsas on the side and both, red and greed were amazing. Place itself is small, but cozy. Food was really good! I went in craving a Jamaica and ended up ordering food to meet the card minimum. But totally worth! The drink was good and the huarache was super fresh. It took a bit of time (assuming because it was super fresh) and the drink was a bit pricey, but for a small business, I don't mind paying the price. After an afternoon filled with niece and nephews we were driving around in a little bit of blur of exhaustion when I saw my partners face light up all of a sudden because she recognized she was near one of her favorite restaurants. She claimed that this is the only spot that has ever come close to her Aunts famous Chicken tinga - who am I to deny such excitement and passion lol. So we approached this hole in the wall with a blue awning. They have a couple of tables and they were all filled except one which we claimed quickly. There was a large Mexican family occupying half of the room and the other table had some hipsters- I felt confident and skeptical at the same time but the glow was still on my partners face- so I got excited as well. We ordered mole enchiladas, chips/salsa, 2 tinga tostadas and 1 quesadillas with half rajas/onion/cheese and the other half with potato/chorizo/cheese. We got a fresh basket of chips- they were greasy but obviously fried at the restaurant. The salsas are the standard green/red that were already on the tables. The green was very mild and bland. The red was smokey for my taste. The enchiladas were good, mole was good and standard, nothing special. The quesadilla is HUGE and made with fresh tortilla- it was delicious but I personally prefer the tortilla to be thinner. The tinga was on point and her love for this restaurant continues. I definitely enjoyed my meal and experience here and will be back. The prices were standard but on the cheaper end. They ran out of jalapenos and didnt have anything spicy but eventually a habanero hot sauce was found- which enhanced my dish. The asada and pastor were tasty with a nice bit of char on them, and the nopales were a perfect accompaniment. Easily, the cheapest place I've eaten in 2009. Defines "Hole-in-the-wall." If you are looking for a wholly (hole-y?) satisfying meal for under $15 (for 2 people), you've hit a winner with this one. My date (ok, my mom) and I split the Huaraches with Mexican sausage and potato...which EASILY feeds 2 people. Actually, it could stuff them. Like others have said, it's a form of "Mexican pizza," with cheese, sausage, potato, red sauce, salsa, cilantro, onion, etc. You can order it with whatever you'd like, and it comes on a sope like (but more crispy) "crust." FILLING. HOT. Awesome. $4.75. I kid you not. All made in house, too. Order an horchata for $1.25, and a Diet Coke for a buck...and wow. We even ordered a chicken sope (too dry for me) for good measure, and still the bill was $12.93. All together. With tax. Crazy! The service is uninspired, but that can be expected. If I was working for tips on stuff that was priced at $4, I'd be pretty unenthused too. However, our food all arrived, and she was adequate, just young...and ya know, not interested. The ambience is typical taqueria, but I recommend ordering "to go" and eating at the park next door... Credit cards ARE accepted. You'd likely never find it unless you lived in this neighborhood, so here's a tip: Driving north on Clark past Ridge, turn RIGHT on Elmdale. It's a street where westbound is Peterson, and eastbound is a side street called...Elmdale. It's on that first block, on the right. (Elmdaleis a one way street going East). Parking on Clark may be easier (meters), but Elmdale has some street parking, no permits. Bus: 22 Clark. Or, ride your bike or walk. It's nice out. Then you can consume more huaraches. For cheap. When I was around 9 or 10, I was enamoured with huaraches, a type of woven Mexican sandal that was hip in the late '60's/early 70's. My parents got me a pair in response to my pleadings, and they ripped up my tender girl feet. After that, I did not think or speak of huaraches until yesterday, when my love affair began anew. My brother and SIL found this little joint. Yesterday afternoon, feeling peckish from lack of food, the Greens picked up a six of Schlitz (taste the cheapness, 'cos it's BYOB!) and we all headed here. OMG. This is a palace for my cheap, broke ass. The food is unbelievably inexpensive and delicious. I had only $5 in my wallet, and that was enough for what I ate - or maybe I stuck my brother with the rest of the bill. Anyway . . . They serve huaraches here, which I had never thought about eating until this day. They look like a Mexican pizza, served on a giant corn tortilla. I am partial to flour tortillas myself, but these were delicious, so I happily consumed. I got the al Pastor - spicy pork, yum - with everything, and green sauce. YUM. This is the delicious Mexican food that I left behind in LA. Take that, overpriced Topolowhatever! A giant, pizza-looking affair that I was only able to finish about 1/3 of. As I write this, I'm noshing on same for breakfast, and I still haven't finished it all. That's 'cos I'm a damn petite flower, but still . . . it's a lot of food, for what . . . $6? The meat was delicious, juicy, well seasoned. Green sauce, cheese - and I smeared a little of our guac over the whole creation, between swigs of Schlitz. Mmmm! That's eatin'. If you are craving Mexican food you should absolutely come here first! All you need is one of their delicious (and filling) huaraches to make your day great. The fresh masa makes all the difference, and the wide variety of flavorful toppings is wonderful. Honestly, just the value alone for this meal is a reason to go. While there may not appear to be a bathroom at first, there actually is a small, yet clean, one in the back that you get to by walking around the side of the restaurant. I heard about this place because the bf's hair stylist, a transplant from Mexico City, said Huaraches Dona Chio was his favorite Mexican place in Chicago. Neither of us had ever heard of a huarache, so we paid this hole-in-the-wall a visit. Turns out a huarache is basically a Mexican pizza, with a corn tortilla for the base, refried beans for the "sauce," and your choice of meat or vegetables, onions, cilantro, cheese, and red/green sauce as the toppings. We tried the pastor, (chicken) tinga, and chorizo. The pastor was bland, the chorizo was very flavorful, and the tinga was fine. The red sauce was spicier than green sauce. The huarache should be eaten relatively quickly because the tortilla gets soggy from the refried beans and or sauce and then falls apart. The prices are very cheap considering the amount of food you get. We waited about 30 minutes for our food, and there were 3 orders in front of us. This restaurant is very small, maybe 10 seats, and doesn't have the greatest eat-in atmosphere, but it's a clean hole-in-the-wall establishment. In the future I would order take-out. read more

I hyped myself all week for this place and let me tell you, I was not disappointed the second I left the establishment. Those huaraches will satisfy any being and whether you're a meat lover or a vegetarian, there's a certain style for you. Steak, spicy pork, chorizo + potatoes, nopales, mushrooms, chicken...this place knew your soft spot. I went for the mushroom huarache, with some salsa verde spread all over it, and was taken to Flavortown (shout out to Guy Fieri). I've never been to this part of Chicago in my life, but thanks to the television show Chicago's Best (on WGN-Channel 9) they expose me to neat little gems such as Huaraches Doña Chio that satisfies my Mexican food cravings for when I'm in a mood that is beyond the usual taco, torta, or burrito deal. I came to this hole in the wall place while waiting for service on my car. I usually like hole in the wall places, and since this place is the definition of a hole in the wall, I figured it HAD to be better than White Castle. Boy was I wrong. The handmade tortillas were not as good as store bought. They have a flavor I really don't care for, and a strange texture to boot. The cheese used to make my quesadilla was cheap and flavorless. The chicken was tough and bland. The drinks are grossly overpriced. They only take cash. The woman who waited on me made me feel uncomfortable by staring at me way too much (until I caught her by shifting my gaze her way, each time). On the bright side, the heat was working, so the place was adequately warm on the 50 degree day of my visit. Overall, I left dissatisfied and wishing I had just gone to White Castle instead (since there's nothing else to speak of in walking distance). Skip this place.
