We waited 10 minutes after we placed our miso soup order and found out it wasn't placed so we placed it again, no problem. The big issue was then being left again for 15 minutes before placing our food order, and then not get checked on after still not receiving our food for another 20. We noticed other tables around us got their food in a timely manner, so we tried to wave down our server. She instead ignored us, and we finally could wave down another server asking about our food. She was apologetic in saying that the printer was at the end of its roll and thus our order wasn't printed out. I do get it, but we proceeded to wait another 30 minutes for our food to come out. In this instance, you would think our order would be made ahead of all of the other tickets since we've been there for almost an hour at this point. Nope! Our server never apologized and said she was 'surprised' the food was taking a while. Why wouldn't you check with the BOH if your table isn't getting their food? Waiting around for kiddos to get off from School, I decided to grab lunch at AKi Sushi. I went with their lunch special for sushi and got a few hand rolls ( spicy tuna, spicy salmon and salmon). They came with miso soup and a small salad. I also ordered the beef steak bento box as part of the lunch special. The sushi was good and enjoyed the salmon a lot. The bento box was pretty good too and it was a nice generous portion. The beef was marinated well and served with rice, California roll and some fruit. My mom went with the steak teriyaki bento box and for $18 it was a tremendous amount of food. I went with the chicken curry katsu and the curry sauce was really very good, the chicken was crispy and an ample portion (two cutlets) and cooked perfectly. I wanted a slight bit of sushi so I also got a spicy salmon hand roll and it was pretty significantly sized. My grandma recently got out of the hospital after a long stay and is on soft food diet so we got her the tofu pad see ew. The flavors were great but the noodles were soft as was the tofu. We still had to blend it up a bit to make it easier for her to swallow but she LOVED it. Asked for it for lunch again today. In a time when it's been hard to find interesting food for her to eat I was grateful to be able to add this dish into the rotation! The sushi tasted the same (good) but it was 8 teeny tiny pieces and not nearly worth $15. Additionally, they used the same exact menus, but when I ordered something I usually get (drunken noodles), the waitress told me they "weren't doing that". I'm not sure if this means it was permanently going to be off the menu or if the chefs were still learning, but they should've taken it off the menu before serving people. Also, I watched 3 little kids enter the kitchen with a staff member (probably their mom, and I obviously don't have a problem with people bringing their kids to work after school, but in the kitchen?) After a really long day of work then shopping on a Saturday, most places have crazy wait times and or need reservations but it was great to just walk into this sushi bar and get seated right away. The staff is very friendly and quick with service. The food was incredible, the ginger salad was the best I had ever had, my mom and I both agreed. The sushi was def very generous and fresh. My mom and her friends love Sushi Taku in downtown Chicago and say that's the best they've had, but she now is saying, this is very easily just as good in comparison and wants to bring them all here to try it. The tempura shrimp and vegetables were pretty bland, as was the tempura sauce that came on the side. It was almost like dipping it in warm water, there was barely any flavor. The spring roll and Shu Mai that came in the box tasted like the frozen stuff that you would get at Sam's Club. The sushi rice was completely flavorless - I didn't detect any of the seasoned vinegar that gives sushi rice that signature sweet/salty/sour taste. The pad Thai did not taste authentic. The sauce was either from a jar or otherwise just not a good recipe. There are so many sushi places in the metro Detroit area, but it can be tricky to find a truly good one. The spice level is more on the mild side as I ordered level 8 with a few of the dishes and I think I'll try level 10 next time. Great flavor with the spice! We ordered Basil Fried Rice, Coconut Fried Rice, Crazy Dragon Roll, Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai and Coconut Noodles. All of them we'd reorder again but I think we'll have to resist temptation to try other things on the menu but I bet no matter what we order it'll be a hit. My visit was on a hot Saturday at noon for lunch. The location is easy to find, easy parking, large space with cool atmosphere. I believe this location is fairly new, and until I visited the Ypsi location again, I didn't realize they were the same. Excellent service and quality food. Takoyaki was perfect. I wasn't expecting the fish flakes on it. It was fun to see them wave at me from the dish. I also ordered salmon sashimi and a naruto roll. I think I was so enamored, I forgot to take a picture of the main course. I asked for the market price of the Toro - but they didn't have any. The dining room was empty but the TVs were on. The staff was ready with warm greetings and friendly service for patrons. The fish tank at the entrance housed some ugly fish that were entertaining to watch.
